2. Aim and Purpose
I have conducted primary research in order to find out the preferences
and expectation of my target audience. I have done this through the use of
a questionnaire. I have included questions that give me an idea of who my
target audience will be precisely, as well as questions that relate to their
wants and needs in order to create a successful music magazine.
The main target of my questionnaire were teenagers, young adults and
people interested in rock type of music, however I have had some people
outside of this target as well in order to get a better idea of what every
thinks about a music magazine and how they would like to see one.
3. Target Audience Questions
Firstly, I have asked the target audience to give some information about themselves, which
will help me see what kind of people my target audience really are. Most people answering
my questionnaire were between 16 and 20, however some occurred between 21 and 30 as
well. There were more women than men, and most of them were living Harlow. The rest
are spread out in the area, with my audience living in different towns near Harlow. I have
also asked them what their employment status is. As most of the people were between
sixteen and twenty, most of the audience was either a student, or a student with part time
work.
This will give me an overall idea of what my target audience is specifically, which will help
me a lot while designing my product so it will be successful as it will be appropriate for my
target market.
4. Preferences Questions
Next, I have asked some questions about their interests and preferences. I wanted to know what
my target audience prefers in certain things so that I know what style to go for when designing my
product.
As this magazine will be a music magazine, I have based questions mostly on music, so that I know
what type of music they prefer.
I have asked them to specify their hobbies, so I would know what sort of extra content to include if
needed. The results were mostly even, however attending gigs and festivals has been the most
popular. Next, I have asked them what their preferred genre of music is, which turned out to be
mostly rock, indie, hardcore and RnB. Also, the most popular magazine turned out to be Kerrang,
which will give an idea of a similar product.
Finally, I have asked them about their favourite/preferred music artists. A number of artists have
been mentioned, however, the most popular ones were A Day To Remember and Parkway Drive.
5. Opinions about
magazines
Next I have asked my audience what they think about some of the features of a potential
magazine. I have asked them what intervals of release they think would be most suitable
for a music magazine. In majority, people said that once a week would be most suitable for
the release. Next I have asked them what price would be suitable for such a magazine,
which have turned out to be Ā£2 and Ā£3. I have also asked them what features they would
want to see in a music magazine, to which most of them said that they would want to see
interviews with artists and articles about interests and hobbies.
By including this sort of questions, I can see what my target audience would want to see in
a music magazine, therefore helping me with designing the product so that it will be
appropriate and appealing to my target audience.
6. Preferences in Design
In these questions, I have included some pictures of existing similar product, as well
as some typography images. I have first asked them to choose the one magazine
they preferred. The majority has replied with Kerrang as their preferred design. I
have also asked them to specify the reason they have chosen the design to the
previous question. The majority have answered because of the image of the model
and the colour and style of the design. Lastly, I have asked the to specify which font
style they have liked the most out of the given ones. The most popular one was
Option 2, the one on the right.
These questions will help me choose a design that will be suitable for my target
audience, and therefore ensure that my product will be successful.
7. Conclusion
From my research, I have found that my target
audience is mostly between sixteen and twenty,
are both genders, and are mostly into rock and
hardcore genres of music. I have also found that
the most similar music magazine available is
Kerrang, which I can look at as research to find
more information about designs and other
elements of a music magazine.
The information I have gained from this research
helped me understand how an audience views
such a product, what they expect to be in a
music magazine.
8. Proposal
From my results I can see that the most suitable
way to release a music magazine is weekly, which I will go
with. I will loosely base my magazine around Kerrang as
my results show this magazine was the most popular.
I will also price my magazine around Ā£2-3, and have
interviews and insights into musicians lives as features in
my magazine, as well as articles about potential hobbies,
interests of people from the audience of the magazine
and album reviews/previews.
Also, the type of font I will use for the title was decided
by my results as well, as one of the fonts was chosen by
people far more than others.
