For more than 25 years in the late 20th century and into the 21st, the island nation of Sri Lanka tore
itself apart in a brutal civil war. At the most basic level, the conflict arose from ethnic tension
between Sinhalese and Tamil citizens. Of course, in reality the causes are more complex, and arise
in large part from Sri Lanka 's colonial legacy.
Background to the Civil War:
Great Britain ruled Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon, from 1815 to 1948. When the British arrived, the
country was dominated by Sinhalese speakers whose ancestors likely arrived on the island from
India in the 500s BCE. Sri Lankan people seem to have been in contact with Tamil speakers from
southern India since at least the second century BCE, but migrations of significant numbers of
Tamils to the island appear to have taken place later, between the seventh and eleventh centuries CE.
In 1815, the population of Ceylon numbered about three

also one of the Dravidian languages found exclusively in peninsular India.
Tamils are one of the oldest surviving ethnic groups and dates back to 1500bc which is estimated by
the burials found in the Tamil Nadu region, but the literary work of ancient Tamils. Tamils are also
known to value their language to a great extent it is considered as part of their culture and identity.
The Tamil language is recognized as a classical language by the government of India.
It started existing in South Asia before arrival of people speaking Indo–European languages which
was in approximately 1500 B.C. The Tamil literature is of a high quality and has survived for at
least 2,000 years in southern India, and although the Tamil language absorbed many words from
northern Indian languages, in the late twentieth century it retained many forms of Dravidian speech.
Tamil is spoken by at least 40 million people and are systematically and routinely treated as second–
class citizens by the majority Sinhalese community.

The Island Country Of Sri Lanka
The island country of Sri Lanka was engaged in a civil war for more than 25 years. The most basic
reason is the conflict that arose between the Sinhalese and Tamil citizens, but it's more than that. In
1948 Sri Lanka gained its independence from Great Britain. Before independence was gained, the
island was dominated by the Sinhalese speakers, which were deemed to be on the island since 500s
BCE. Also, there were mostly Buddhist Sinhalese, three million of them, and about 300,000 Hindu
Tamils. Sri Lankan people seem to have been in contact with Tamil speakers from southern India
since at least the second century BCE, but large amounts of Tamils started to appear in Sri Lanka
between the seventh and eleventh centuries. When the island was first colonized by Britain, large
plantations were settled on the island eventually being used for the production of tea and rubber.
After the foundation of the cash crop plantations, approximately one million Tamil speakers from
southern India were taken for plantation usage, using them as workers. That only led fuel to the
flame of the cultural battles between the Sinhalese and Tamil peoples. Another thing that added to
the hatred was that Tamil people were mainly preferred in the bureaucratic sense of the schools that
British officials created. This was a common tactic of European rule and left the nations in turmoil
after they gained independence.
Sri Lanka was granted independence February fourth 1948 from Britain and the Sinhalese

Effects Of Imperialism In Sri Lanka

Richard Htet

Karl Liebknecht's pronounced Imperialism to be "Like a cyclone..." and visualized it to "spin across
the globe... crushing people and sucking their blood like a vampire", however, he had a cynical view
of it and failed to see the positive effects it has. During the years the British Empire colonized Sri
Lanka, many ideas and novelties were infused deep into Sri Lanka's culture. The British left their
most celebrated innovations such as cricket the sport, the tea industry, and western education
behind.
During Napoleon's rise to power, most of the world was colonized and claimed by European
countries. With the one of the mightiest of navies, Great Britain went head to head against France,

As one of the greatest innovations introduced to Sri Lanka, cricket has a gameplay similar to that of
modern baseball. In baseball there are four bases while in cricket there are only two. Another
distinction between cricket and baseball is that in baseball the pitcher's main objective is to get the
batter out, whereas, in Cricket the pitcher's goal is to knock down the wicket placed at the end of
each base. The first cricket game ever recorded in Sri Lanka took place in 1892, just a few years
after the British arrived. However, the British were not only interested in introducing their sport but
also familiarizing the Sri Lankans with it to the point where it has become the most played sport in
Sri Lanka currently. The British were successful since cricket has been accepted with no reluctance
by Sri Lankans, and is more popular in Sri Lanka today than it is in England. There are cricket

IMPROVEMENTS TO HIGH FREQUENCY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN SRI LANKA
NAVY FOR BETTER PERFORMANCES
INTRODUCTION
1. The High Frequency (HF) radio band is defined as the range of frequencies in the radio spectrum
between 3 and 30 megahertz . Military organizations have used HF radios for both strategic and
tactical communications for more than 80 years. However with the development of satellite
communications (SatCom) use of HF communication were de–emphasized and fell in to disuse. In
contrast to this importance of HF communication still existing for military applications. The
militaries around the world must have a robust long range communication system that does not rely
on existing communication infrastructure in emergencies, since the satellite comms and other
comms infrastructure will present most lucrative targets for the enemy.
2. At present Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) use VHF and UHF line of sigh (LOS) systems for its tactical
communications ranges up to 50Nm from transmitting (TX) stations, beyond this range SLN is
compelled to use satCom systems to contact its fleet at sea. However this method is very expensive
and voice call charges of satellite comm are beyond 500.00 Rs per minute, besides all the ships and
craft of SLN fleet were not equipped with SatCom facilities. Furthermore the Inmarsat system
which SLN use to connect with her fleet is a commercial system which controlled by a company
this fact also raises security concerns.

Summary Of Valmiki 's ' Ramayana '

Midterm Essay
Valmiki's Ramayana has transcended being simply a folktale, and has manifested itself into an
embodiment of virtues. It has great influence over the expectation of a women in the society; the
status and the ideal itself has been conferred upon them by the Ramayana which depict 'Sita' as the
ideal wife worthy of being emulated by Hindu women. There is a similar, recurring pattern that
seems to unfold for any women depicted in the Ramayana who actively stray beyond this idea
model. These women, particularly Tataka, Shurpanakha and Ahalya, are depicted as creatures that
conclude in paying the heavy consequences set on them by the patriarchy.
Foremost, the primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shurpanakha is a demon from Lanka, who speaks with sharp directness, and isn't hesitant to use her
sexual power as a tactic of getting what she wants. Ahalya, though she slightly varies from Tataka
and Shurpanakha, is still undeniably influenced by the forests temptations. In the earliest, full
narrative, when Indra comes disguised as her husband, Ahalya sees through his disguise, but
consents owing to her "curiosity". In another interpretation, Ahalya 's pride in her beauty compels
her to continue, but in both cases she doesn't deny her impulses and consciously acts on it.
In each of their respective narratives, the three women share a moment where they "fall from grace",
and part from their virtues. In the Ramayana, physical beauty is so intimately correlated to holiness
and godliness. For example, when Rama is being described, there is extraordinary amount of detail
and attention given to the description of his appearance; sentences on sentences just about the
statuesque form of Rama's arms. It is undeniable that physical appearance is a direct mirror of the
character 's inner disposition. The women are originally described as having unparalleled beauty. It's
only when they part from what is considered virtuous, do they transform and lose their physical
appeal. In Tataka's case, she was once a beautiful princess whose falling moment was when she
chose to seek out revenge, and allow herself to be engulfed in utter rage. She was

The Epic Of The Ramayana
The Ramayana is more than just a religious text. While it is blatantly rooted in Hindu culture and
practice, a myriad of lessons and points from the Ramayana apply to human life on a much more
general scale. Narayan's piece portrays the complexity of human relationships, moral decisions, and
the blurring lines between what is considered 'good' and what is considered 'evil'. Numerous
elements of the Ramayana exemplify these common themes but it is particularly noticeable in the
relationships between siblings. Rama and his brother Lakshmana have a deep, yet sometimes
morally contrasting, relationship while Ravana and Vibishana represent another side of the moral
spectrum and brotherly conflict. The four of them together embody the complications of both
dharma and sympathy, and the universal prominence of conflict between brothers. From the very
beginning of the Ramayana the reader understands the depth of Rama and Lakshmana's
brotherhood. On page 10, the King mentions that Rama and Lakshmana have never been separated,
and Lakshmana follows Rama on a journey with the Sage. When Rama is faced with exile,
Lakshmana is outraged. "Lakshmana, on hearing of the developments, was roused like the fire
starting to consume the Earth on the last day" (Narayan, 50). Lakshmana's initial response is violent;
he threatens to "seize the crown and [he will] not rest until it is placed on Rama's head" (Narayan,
51). Lakshmana's devotion to Rama is profound. He views the protection of Rama's

INTRO/THESIS
The Ramayana is an excellent example of Joseph Campbell's monomyth, who expresses that it
"marks the physical, mental, and spiritual changes that young women and men undergo as they
grow and develop to fill a variety of roles in society" (Whomsley 186) based on cultural dogmas.
During this journey of maturation, an in individual must act in accordance with dharma to attain
enlightenment. Dharma is the glue, which upholds the universe and humanity. Every individual has
a sense of duty and destiny established from his or her responsibility to achieve his or her role in
society. Dharma "encompasses all actions, thoughts, and speech in keeping with living a virtuous
life" (India: The Ramayana 242). Acting contrary to your predestined role in society impairs not
only the individual's ability to obtain dharma but that of humanities as well.
The hero of the epic in this monomyth is Rama, who understands the sacrifices he must make in
order to "succeed in being a faithful and dutiful son, loving husband, and caring brother, while also
being a stern leader and powerful warrior." Rama's ability to comprehend his conscious devotion to
the beliefs of his culture based on the idea of dharma, results in his own enlightenment, symbolizing
the ideas and values of his culture. The monomyth consist of three major phases: the departure,
initiation and return. In addition, it includes numerous steps however, I will be examining

Cultural heritage in Ceylon (Sri Lanka)

culture in Sir Lanka. By analyzing cultural heritage definition in Sinhala language, the definition
given in the legislations in 1940, and its relationship with Athens charter and 1954 UNESCO

definition. Also, I will offer criticisms and recommendations for an improved approach to the

the 1954 UNESCO convention uses the similar term as a "cultural property". However, 1940

4 What vision of cultural heritage is your country recommending to its citizens. The vision
imbedded on Sri Lankans (citizens in Ceylon) through this definition was that the British authority
had the autonomy about the antiquities or heritage in Sri Lanka and its materialistic perspective of
Sri Lanka heritage. One of the evidence for this vision is the Ordinance's hand over of the
ownership to the Britain by naming antiquities as an absolute property of the crown. Furthermore,
by using the term "property" to the antiquity, it apparently states the ownership and the connection
with the market value. Therefore, this definition promotes the materialistic value on heritage base on

Canada, a country known for its rich mosaic of cultures and people, it is uncommon for us to picture

surrounded by the Indian Ocean. This beautiful country beholds some of the greatest entities such as
its prosperous tea plantations. However, beneath this beauty lies a tremendous amount of corruption

Upwards of seventy thousand Tamil civilians were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced
(United Nations, 2000). Worldwide it is known as the May massacre and black July. The systematic
killings of the Tamils were considered genocide. The United Nations (2000) states, that genocide is
the " [perpetration of] violent crimes with [the] intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national,
ethnic, racial or religious group"(P.337). The genocide against Tamils has been going on for years
and the Sri Lankan government has not been brought to justice. Till this day, the surviving Tamil
civilians are kept in concentration camps where many men, women and children get tortured,
kidnapped and raped. According to the Sri Lankan government, these camps were made for
rehabilitation purposes. David Keen (2014) states that the use of the camp is, "a dramatic practical
expression of the fact that the Tamil population as a whole was considered suspect in relation to
rebellion and terrorism" (P.10). Even after the genocide and the victory of the civil war, the Sri
Lankan government still has not done anything to bring equality amongst its population. Let alone
any sort of independence for the Tamil civilians. The newly elected President, Mahinda Rajapaksha

Speech Essay On Sri Lanka
Good Morning! I am Nicole Tong from 210. I will be presenting the impacts on Sri Lanka if the sea
level should rise by 66m.
Sri Lanka is one of the smallest, but biologically diverse countries in Asia. It contains tropical
forests and also hosts many diverse endemic species. When the sea level rises, animals that live on
the coastal areas of Sri Lanka will move inwards in search of food and shelter. Human settlements
will also move inland. They will invade habitats and mating ranges of animals such as the Bubble–
nest Frog. The bubble–nest frog is an endangered species. It lives in southern canopy–covered
forests. The movement of these coastal animals may result in the population of the Bubble–nest frog

Coral reefs support fish and other marine animals by providing shelter and food for them. The
availability and quality of the fish catch will decrease due to the change in the ecosystem. As a
result, local fisheries would go into a decline. Unfortunately, as most coastal residents rely on
fishing to make a living, a decrease in local fisheries would adversely affect their income and
subsequently their standard of living. Not only that, but local fisheries also play a significant role in
the GDP and economy of Sri Lanka. Other than that, coral reefs also protect the coast from coastal
erosion during floods.
Coastal erosion is a major problem in Sri Lanka. A fairly small island by itself, coastal erosion will
lead to even less land for Sri Lanka. The coastal districts also contribute to more than 40% of Sri
Lanka's GDP. As such, if severe coastal erosion occurs, it would negatively affect Sri Lanka's
economy.
Rising sea level will also lead to flooding and pollution of water surfaces, which will then result in
an increase in water–borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and viral gastroenteritis.
In addition, destruction of property and submergence of coastal communities due to rise in sea
levels will force large numbers of coastal residents to migrate inland. This will lead to overcrowding
and competition for resources and jobs. The overcrowded conditions would allow diseases to spread

Sri Lanka 's Civil War
Sri Lanka's civil war ended seven years ago, but social fault–lines dividing the country have not yet
closed. Ethnic Tamils worldwide still resent the Sinhalese–dominated State for alleged war crimes
committed during the insurgency and for its piecemeal efforts at resettling internally displaced
Tamils. What pains them more than material losses wrought by two decades of bloodshed is the
war's long and ominous shadow on today's Tamil youth. Unmoored from mainstream society, these
young men and women are Sri Lanka's lost generation.
On March 8, Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) Youth chief Sivarraajh Chandran slammed
Malaysia's Home Ministry for mulling the import of former Sri Lankan soldiers as security guards,
imploring Kuala Lumpur to rethink this "mad scheme." Why? Because "It does not consider the
sensitivities of Tamils all over the world. Tamils hate Sri Lankan soldiers who had massacred
civilians in the long war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE)," Chandran explained.
Last year, Sri Lankans voted President Maithripala Sirisena and his "rainbow coalition" into office
on pledges of uniting a fractured country and he clearly has his work cut out for him.
Sri Lanka's civil war officially began in 1983, but its roots lay in events three and a half millennia
earlier. Around 1500 BCE, Aryan invaders from the North swooped down on the Indian
subcontinent and conquered its Dravidian denizens. The Buddhist Sinhalese claim ancestry from the

Country Partnership Framework Of Sri Lanka Essay
Country Partnership Framework – Sri Lanka Review
Sri Lanka will soon celebrate its 69th Independence Day on 04th February 2017. Although it gained
its independence from the British Rule in 1948, many significant events since, have impacted the
country's growth and economic development. Notably the rise of Tamil militancy in the 1970s that
only ended with the Sri Lankan military defeating the LTTE in 2009, the new constitution that was
introduced as recently as 1977, the continued civic unrest even till the 1990s and not to forget the
Tsunami in 2004, etc. have all been harsh and hostile to the economic development of Sri Lanka.
In a Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) conducted by the World Bank Group (WBG), it has been
found that the government has been struggling to generate adequate revenue to be able to save or
invest in welfare related projects like health, infrastructure, education, etc. Poor foreign policies
affecting foreign investments, the low tax to GDP rate, excessive government control in all sectors
and ambitious policies have all contributed to the weak and straggling economy.
On the other hand, the World Bank on February 2016 notes that Sri Lanka has steadily reduced its
poverty percentage against its overall population to less than 7%. The country's economy that was
predominantly agrarian and dependent on agricultural income has moved to the service and
industrial sectors. Income inequality has also dropped in the past, with a gini coefficient of 0.36 in

How Does Narayan Present Women In The Ramayana
In the chapter "The Wedding" from Narayan's The Ramayana, the portrayal of men and women in
ancient India show how both men and women have emotional distresses, but their reactions to this
distress are different, showing how men and women are supposed to follow masculinity or
femininity. Sita's exaggerated plight, Rama's muted distress, and the emotional distress of the men
of Mithila when they cannot marry Sita, shows different ways that the story portrays men and
women through love, and how The Ramayana defines how men and woman act. When Sita and
Rama see each other for the first time, they become lovesick for each other. ., Sita had a "[...]sudden

Adding on to her physical suffering, Sita says, "He invaded my heart and has deprived me of all

(Nayaran 23). Bothquotes describe Sita as very helpless and deeply love–struck due to the fact that
Rama has changed her life by merely appearing before her. Sita felt extremely affected both
physically and mentally by Rama's appearance. The Ramayana's portrayal of Sita shows that women
are more vulnerable and convey their emotions on a much larger level than men. Nayaran is
portraying women as foolish or disturbed when exposed to love. Rama makes his revelation
regarding Sita when he is "In the seclusion of his bedroom, he began to brood over the girl he had
noticed [...]His innate sense of discipline and propriety had made him conceal his feelings before
other people" (Narayan 24). Rama is in more control of his senses and conforming to the
conventional standards of behavior that men were supposed to follow at that time. Rama's reaction
shows that men are supposed to act more masculine, which is associated with being tough,
disciplined, and not bothered by trivial issues that could label a man as "weak".. When laying in his

Religion In The Ramayana
Religion in the Ramayana plays a key role in the plot. Religious principles such as Karma and

Karma has an impact on the characters in the Ramayana as this principle in religion leads to the

Ravana uses prayer to gain power; With this power, he attempts to destroy all worlds and enslave
the gods. The ten–headed Ravana "and his brothers have acquired from us extraordinary powers
through austerities and prayers, and now they threaten to destroy our worlds and enslave us'"
(Narayan 4). Ravana is impacted by prayer as he uses this to gain powerful weapons from the gods.
This impacts his life as he misuses the power and the gods need to stop him. This also impacts
Rama as he incarnated because of this. Without the use of prayer to the gods in the Ramayana,
Rama would not exist and Ravana would not have the powerful weapons he does. The gods need to
stop Ravana before the worlds are destroyed and Vishnu creates a plan. The gods gather and create a
plan to have Vishnu incarnate as Rama to kill Ravana. Whereupon "Vishnu promised, 'Ravana can
be destroyed only by a human being since he has never asked for protection against a human being.

the gods find a solution in what he does not pray for. If Ravana prays for protection from humans,
Rama is not incarnated because Vishnu cannot kill him as a human. Therefore, without Ravana's
prayer to the gods, Rama is not present in the epic. Characters are incarnated by the impact of

Gilgamesh and Ramayana
An Epic Definition There was a time when gods and demons roamed the earth. A time when
humanity lived at the mercy of divine beings, who executed their wills against the humans,
following their own selfish desires and placing humans in a position of piety to these dominant
beings. This time on earth is one of great men who fought against these demigods, giving them great
fame passed on as stories in the oral tradition. Though it is unrealistic to believe that these men truly
fought against divine beings, their stories played a role in the ancient world, which was the

"Ramayana" both possess great battle scenes where the heroic namesakes of their respective stories
end up victorious against a foe that is thought to be unbeatable. Gilgamesh slays two beasts,
Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven; while in "Ramayana", Rama's ultimate battle is against the
demon Ravana. Gilgamesh's impending battle with Humbaba is of concern to both his subjects and
Enkidu, both of which feel that he will not have success. The citizens state, "We have heard of

Gilgamesh is successful in his battle with Humbaba and follows up his battle with another one
against the Bull of Heaven, another divine beast that meets its doom at the hands of the great
warrior. The defeat of these two great beasts gave Gilgamesh an even higher level of fame amongst
his citizens; he was no longer a tyrannical ruler, but rather a great warrior. Rama's defeat of Ravana
was met with the realization that a mortal man had defeated a demon, "alas, he who could not be

Dharma As A Key Role
Dharma in Hinduism pertains to one's duty towards their caste, For example a warrior's job is to
protect and serve his people. Among all parts of Hinduism, dharma is especially seen in the
Ramayana, where there are many specific instances where dharma plays a key role. The Ramayana
explains the story of Ram in which he works towards fulfilling his dharma and overcoming the
obstacles he faces. Ram is faced with trial by exile, but before that is faced with the dharma of being
a son of a king who does not go back on his words, a warrior, a husband, a brother, and a soon to be
king, Ram successfully finds his way to fulfill his duty towards, his father and wife but
inadvertently performed his duty towards his kingdom and cast. The Ramayana serves as a medium
to explain the impact and the significance of dharma in Hinduism, in which Rama becomes the
character to take on the role of a dharmic man. The essence of the story begins with his father who
needs an heir to his throne. Each of his wives each were granted a son from eating rice that was
blessed by god. Among the sons was Rama and Bharatha, who play a key role in the development of
the Ramayana. King Dasharatha the father of Rama and Bharatha, chooses Rama causing Bharatha's
mother Keikeyi to be infuriated. She uses boons she was granted by Dasharatha while he was sick

Temporal Blindness is where we are "time blinded" to what actually is going on in life due to a
focus on what is going on right now at this moment. It is as if we put something major important in

Ravana was temporally blind into seeing this occurring in the future because of his overwhelming

Temporal blindness can also be seen in my life today. I would say that our country and our president

Also, there were mostly Buddhist Sinhalese, three million of them, and about 300,000 Hindu Tamils. Sri Lankan people seem to have been in contact with Tamil speakers from southern India since at least the second century BCE, but large amounts of Tamils started to appear in Sri Lanka between the seventh and eleventh centuries. When the island was first colonized by Britain, large plantations were settled on the island eventually being used for the production of tea and rubber. After the foundation of the cash crop plantations, approximately one million Tamil speakers from southern India were taken for plantation usage, using them as workers. That only led fuel to the flame of the cultural battles between the Sinhalese and Tamil peoples. Another thing that added to the hatred was that Tamil people were mainly preferred in the bureaucratic sense of the schools that British officials created. This was a common tactic of European rule and left the nations in turmoil after they gained independence. Sri Lanka was granted independence February fourth 1948 from Britain and the Sinhalese ... The British left their most celebrated innovations such as cricket the sport, the tea industry, and western education behind. In baseball there are four bases while in cricket there are only two. Another distinction between cricket and baseball is that in baseball the pitcher's main objective is to get the batter out, whereas, in Cricket the pitcher's goal is to knock down the wicket placed at the end of each base. The first cricket game ever recorded in Sri Lanka took place in 1892, just a few years after the British arrived. However, the British were not only interested in introducing their sport but also familiarizing the Sri Lankans with it to the point where it has become the most played sport in Sri Lanka currently. The High Frequency (HF) radio band is defined as the range of frequencies in the radio spectrum between 3 and 30 megahertz . Military organizations have used HF radios for both strategic and tactical communications for more than 80 years. However with the development of satellite communications (SatCom) use of HF communication were de–emphasized and fell in to disuse. In contrast to this importance of HF communication still existing for military applications. The militaries around the world must have a robust long range communication system that does not rely on existing communication infrastructure in emergencies, since the satellite comms and other comms infrastructure will present most lucrative targets for the enemy. 2. At present Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) use VHF and UHF line of sigh (LOS) systems for its tactical communications ranges up to 50Nm from transmitting (TX) stations, beyond this range SLN is compelled to use satCom systems to contact its fleet at sea. However this method is very expensive and voice call charges of satellite comm are beyond 500.00 Rs per minute, besides all the ships and craft of SLN fleet were not equipped with SatCom facilities. Summary Of Valmiki 's ' Ramayana ' Zana Gankhuyag Prof Vivek Narayanan ENGH 316 31 Mar 2017 Midterm Essay Valmiki's Ramayana has transcended being simply a folktale, and has manifested itself into an embodiment of virtues. It has great influence over the expectation of a women in the society; the status and the ideal itself has been conferred upon them by the Ramayana which depict 'Sita' as the ideal wife worthy of being emulated by Hindu women. There is a similar, recurring pattern that seems to unfold for any women depicted in the Ramayana who actively stray beyond this idea model. In the earliest, full narrative, when Indra comes disguised as her husband, Ahalya sees through his disguise, but consents owing to her "curiosity". In another interpretation, Ahalya 's pride in her beauty compels her to continue, but in both cases she doesn't deny her impulses and consciously acts on it. In each of their respective narratives, the three women share a moment where they "fall from grace", and part from their virtues. In the Ramayana, physical beauty is so intimately correlated to holiness and godliness. For example, when Rama is being described, there is extraordinary amount of detail and attention given to the description of his appearance; sentences on sentences just about the statuesque form of Rama's arms. It is undeniable that physical appearance is a direct mirror of the character 's inner disposition. The women are originally described as having unparalleled beauty. It's only when they part from what is considered virtuous, do they transform and lose their physical appeal. • 12. The Epic Of The Ramayana The Ramayana is more than just a religious text. While it is blatantly rooted in Hindu culture and practice, a myriad of lessons and points from the Ramayana apply to human life on a much more general scale. Narayan's piece portrays the complexity of human relationships, moral decisions, and the blurring lines between what is considered 'good' and what is considered 'evil'. Numerous elements of the Ramayana exemplify these common themes but it is particularly noticeable in the relationships between siblings. Rama and his brother Lakshmana have a deep, yet sometimes morally contrasting, relationship while Ravana and Vibishana represent another side of the moral spectrum and brotherly conflict. The four of them together embody the complications of both dharma and sympathy, and the universal prominence of conflict between brothers. From the very beginning of the Ramayana the reader understands the depth of Rama and Lakshmana's brotherhood. On page 10, the King mentions that Rama and Lakshmana have never been separated, and Lakshmana follows Rama on a journey with the Sage. When Rama is faced with exile, Lakshmana is outraged. "Lakshmana, on hearing of the developments, was roused like the fire starting to consume the Earth on the last day" (Narayan, 50). Lakshmana's initial response is violent; he threatens to "seize the crown and [he will] not rest until it is placed on Rama's head" (Narayan, 51). Lakshmana's devotion to Rama is profound. Joseph Campbell's Monomyth Chauntise McIntosh Prof. Warren Hum T/Th 1130/1245 INTRO/THESIS The Ramayana is an excellent example of Joseph Campbell's monomyth, who expresses that it "marks the physical, mental, and spiritual changes that young women and men undergo as they grow and develop to fill a variety of roles in society" (Whomsley 186) based on cultural dogmas. During this journey of maturation, an in individual must act in accordance with dharma to attain enlightenment. Dharma is the glue, which upholds the universe and humanity. Every individual has a sense of duty and destiny established from his or her responsibility to achieve his or her role in society. Dharma "encompasses all actions, thoughts, and speech in keeping with living a virtuous life" (India: The Ramayana 242). Acting contrary to your predestined role in society impairs not only the individual's ability to obtain dharma but that of humanities as well. The hero of the epic in this monomyth is Rama, who understands the sacrifices he must make in order to "succeed in being a faithful and dutiful son, loving husband, and caring brother, while also being a stern leader and powerful warrior." Rama's ability to comprehend his conscious devotion to the beliefs of his culture based on the idea of dharma, results in his own enlightenment, symbolizing the ideas and values of his culture. This reflects Sri Lanka's strategic significance, but also that the military, political and theocratic elites that rule Sri Lanka maintain Western domination of the economy that still follows the colonial export–oriented model (FRONTLINE). • 31. Country Partnership Framework Of Sri Lanka Essay Country Partnership Framework – Sri Lanka Review Sri Lanka will soon celebrate its 69th Independence Day on 04th February 2017. Although it gained its independence from the British Rule in 1948, many significant events since, have impacted the country's growth and economic development. Notably the rise of Tamil militancy in the 1970s that only ended with the Sri Lankan military defeating the LTTE in 2009, the new constitution that was introduced as recently as 1977, the continued civic unrest even till the 1990s and not to forget the Tsunami in 2004, etc. have all been harsh and hostile to the economic development of Sri Lanka. In a Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) conducted by the World Bank Group (WBG), it has been found that the government has been struggling to generate adequate revenue to be able to save or invest in welfare related projects like health, infrastructure, education, etc. Poor foreign policies affecting foreign investments, the low tax to GDP rate, excessive government control in all sectors and ambitious policies have all contributed to the weak and straggling economy. On the other hand, the World Bank on February 2016 notes that Sri Lanka has steadily reduced its poverty percentage against its overall population to less than 7%. The country's economy that was predominantly agrarian and dependent on agricultural income has moved to the service and industrial sectors. Income inequality has also dropped in the past, with a gini coefficient of 0.36 in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sita's exaggerated plight, Rama's muted distress, and the emotional distress of the men of Mithila when they cannot marry Sita, shows different ways that the story portrays men and women through love, and how The Ramayana defines how men and woman act. Sita felt extremely affected both physically and mentally by Rama's appearance. The Ramayana's portrayal of Sita shows that women are more vulnerable and convey their emotions on a much larger level than men. Nayaran is portraying women as foolish or disturbed when exposed to love. Rama makes his revelation regarding Sita when he is "In the seclusion of his bedroom, he began to brood over the girl he had noticed [...]His innate sense of discipline and propriety had made him conceal his feelings before other people" (Narayan 24). Rama is in more control of his senses and conforming to the conventional standards of behavior that men were supposed to follow at that time. Religious principles such as Karma and Dharma, and the act of prayer all have an impact on the characters in the epic. In the Ramayana, religion influences the roles of the characters and the challenges they face throughout the story. Karma has an impact on the characters in the Ramayana as this principle in religion leads to the death of important characters; Karma not only has a negative impact, but it has a positive impact too. An example of bad karma causing death is Vali. Through a misunderstanding with his brother Sugreeva, Vali forces Sugreeva to leave while Vali takes his wife and kingship. The ten–headed Ravana "and his brothers have acquired from us extraordinary powers through austerities and prayers, and now they threaten to destroy our worlds and enslave us'" (Narayan 4). Ravana is impacted by prayer as he uses this to gain powerful weapons from the gods. This impacts his life as he misuses the power and the gods need to stop him. This also impacts Rama as he incarnated because of this. Without the use of prayer to the gods in the Ramayana, Rama would not exist and Ravana would not have the powerful weapons he does. The gods need to stop Ravana before the worlds are destroyed and Vishnu creates a plan. The gods gather and create a plan to have Vishnu incarnate as Rama to kill Ravana. Whereupon "Vishnu promised, 'Ravana can be destroyed only by a human being since he has never asked for protection against a human being. I shall incarnate as Dasaratha's son'" (Narayan 4). Ravana not only gains power through prayer, but the gods find a solution in what he does not pray for. Gilgamesh slays two beasts, Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven; while in "Ramayana", Rama's ultimate battle is against the demon Ravana. Gilgamesh's impending battle with Humbaba is of concern to both his subjects and Enkidu, both of which feel that he will not have success. The citizens state, "We have heard of Humbaba, his features are grotesque, / Who is there who could face his weaponry (II.262–63)? Gilgamesh is successful in his battle with Humbaba and follows up his battle with another one against the Bull of Heaven, another divine beast that meets its doom at the hands of the great warrior. The defeat of these two great beasts gave Gilgamesh an even higher level of fame amongst his citizens; he was no longer a tyrannical ruler, but rather a great warrior. Rama's defeat of Ravana was met with the realization that a mortal man had defeated a demon, "alas, he who could not be killed by the gods and demons, has been killed in battle by a man standing on earth" (755). Among all parts of Hinduism, dharma is especially seen in the Ramayana, where there are many specific instances where dharma plays a key role. The Ramayana explains the story of Ram in which he works towards fulfilling his dharma and overcoming the obstacles he faces. Ram is faced with trial by exile, but before that is faced with the dharma of being a son of a king who does not go back on his words, a warrior, a husband, a brother, and a soon to be king, Ram successfully finds his way to fulfill his duty towards, his father and wife but inadvertently performed his duty towards his kingdom and cast. The Ramayana serves as a medium to explain the impact and the significance of dharma in Hinduism, in which Rama becomes the character to take on the role of a dharmic man. The essence of the story begins with his father who needs an heir to his throne. Each of his wives each were granted a son from eating rice that was blessed by god. Among the sons was Rama and Bharatha, who play a key role in the development of the Ramayana. King Dasharatha the father of Rama and Bharatha, chooses Rama causing Bharatha's mother Keikeyi to be infuriated. In the Ramayana, Ravana is temporally blind when he decides to capture Sita, which ultimately leads to his death. He also could have prevented his death by letting Sita go back to Rama, so his life wouldn't be in such danger. Temporal blindness can also be seen in my life today. I would say that our country and our president were blind on September 11. I think we could have prevented it from happening if we had paid attention to what was actually going on in life. I think many people here in the United States took their life for granted. The attacks on September 11 put everyone's life into perspective and opened their eyes from that blindness that was blocking them from seeing what was actually occurring in the real world. I think many people before September 11 were just living it up.
