made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road though to World
War 2.
A divers and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups and

Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Veda. Sri Lanka has a

Sri Lanka is a republic and a unitary state governed by a Semi-presidential system. The
legislative capital, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, is suburb of the commercial capital and largest
city, Colombo.
Sri Lanka has had a long history of international engagement, as a founding member of the
South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and a member of the United

Location
Situated in the Indian Ocean and located just off the southern Coast of India, this island
paradise has often been considered the pearl of the Indian Ocean.
Though the country has no other immediate neighbors except for India and Maldives, Sri
Lanka maintains close ties with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other Asian countries in the
region.
Sri Lanka’s location at the southern tip of India has always made it an important strategic
drop off point for ships making long journeys that pass through Asia which allowed the
country to prosper.
With a location just above the equator the country enjoys a lovely tropical climate that
provides relatively constant weather throughout the year. Despite this, it also features two
main monsoons season that bring about heavy periods of rain. It is because of this location
and the associated climate that the country has beautiful landscapes and a diverse array of
wildlife.

ECONOMY
In recent years the economy of Sri Lanka has shown a strong upward trend with per capita
GDP touching almost $4000. Since 1977, the Sri Lankan government has been implementing
privatization and an open economy for global competition thereby encouraging foreign
investments. Subsequent to the quelling of the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP),
privatization and reforms received a major boost and stress on export oriented growth further
assisted in reviving the economy’s performance escalating GDP growth to 7% in 1993.
Realizing Sri Lanka’s growth potential major international companies like NTT, Shell and
Caltex have made huge investments.
In the ensuing years the economy of Sri Lanka witnessed many up heaves resulting in uneven
economic growth but the overall average annual GDP growth was at 5.2% in 1999-2000.
Since 2002, following the change in management the country’s economy gradually
recovered.
Defense expenditures were reduced which helped in paying more attention on getting the
country’s larger public sector debt under control. Increased direct foreign investment (FDI),
lower interest rates, revival of the stock exchange and increased tourist arrivals have
benefited the economy immensely. In 2002 the economic growth escalated to 4% aided by
the strong service sector growth was at 5.2%.

EDUCATION
The present educational system of Sri Lanka derives from the British educational system,
which was introduced by the British colonial masters in the 19th
century. The British colonial
government established colleges for boys and girls separately. These colleges consisted of
Primary Schools, Lower Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools.
Today primary education lasts six years, after which the pupils sit a scholarship examination.
After primary education there is Junior Secondary education which lasts for five years, after
which pupils have to sit government examination namely G.C.E. ordinary level to qualify for
Senior Secondary education which last another two years. Then comes the competitive
university entrance examination which is called G.C.E. Advanced level examination.

SECURITY
Military
The Sri Lanka Armed Forces, comprising the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Navy, and the
Sri Lanka Air Force come under the purview of the Ministry of Defense. The total strength
of the three services is around 259,000 personnel, with nearly 36,000 reserves. Sri Lanka has
not enforced military conscription. Paramilitary units include the Special Task Force, the
Civil Security Force, and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard.
Since independence in 1948, the primary focus of the armed forces has been internal security,
crushing three major insurgencies, two by Marxist militants of the JVP and 30-year-long
conflict with the LTTE which has been proscribed as a terrorist organization by 32 countries.
The armed forces have been in a continuous mobilized state for the last 30 years. Marking a
rare occurrence in modern military history, the Sri Lankan military was able to bring a
decisive end to the Sri Lankan Civil War in May 2009. Sri Lanka has claimed to be the first
country in the modern world to eradicate terrorism on its own soil. The Sri Lankan Armed
Forces have engaged in United Nations peacekeeping operations since the early 1960s,
contributing forces to permanent contingents deployed in several UN peacekeeping missions
in Chad, Lebanon and Haiti.
