2. CLASSIFICATION
• FAMILY - Coronaviridae
• GENDER - coronavirus
• GENOME - Linear single – stranded RNA
• Pleomorphic , Wrapped
• 80 – 220 nm
• 30 serotypes

3. INFECTION
• They are transmitted by aerosols secretions ( respiratory)
• Zoonotic origin also present – strains virulant
• It has an incubation period of 2 days to a week

4. DISEASES CAUSED BY CORONAVIRUS
• Coronavirus primarily infect the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract of
mammals and birds. Six different strains of corona virus infect humans.
• SARS-CoV causes SARS , has a unique pathogenesis because it causes both
upper and lower respiratory tract infections and can also cause gastroenteritis.

5. CORONA VIRUS – A NEW CHANGE
• Coronavirus can cause pneumonia, either direct viral pneumonia or a
secondary bacterial pneumonia
• This outbreak – known as novel corona virus is a new strain that has
not been previously identified in humans

8. TREATMENT
• There is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for this
infection
• People infected should receive supportive care to relieve symptoms
• For severe cases, treatment should include care to support vital organs

• Clean the hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub.

16. CORONA VIRUS - OUTBREAK
• The new respiratory outbreak was first detected in the Chinese city of
WUHAN has now infected more than 6000 Chinese citizens.
• The fast spreading infection, which causes pneumonia like
symptoms, has prompted Chinese authorities to quarantine several
major cities.

20. • India’s first confirmed case of novel coronavirus has been reported
from Kerala ( Thrissur) after a student tested positive , post her return
from China’s Wuhan university.
