Coronavirus

  1. 1. • Coronavirus can cause diseases in mammals and birds. • Coronavirus can cause respiratory infections in human. • The name "coronavirus" is derived from the Latin corona, meaning crown or halo, which refers to the characteristic appearance of the virus particles (virions). • Coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s. Common coronaviruses -Human coronavirus 229E -Human coronavirus OC43 -SARS-CoV in 2003 -HCoV NL63 in 2004 -HKU1 in 2005 -MERS-CoV in 2012 -2019-nCoV in 2019
  2. 2. 1. Human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) 2. Human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) 3. SARS-CoV 4. Human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63, New Haven coronavirus) 5. Human coronavirus HKU1 6. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), previously known as novel coronavirus 2012 and HCoV-EMC. 7. Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) also known as Wuhan pneumonia or Wuhan coronavirus.
  3. 3. ) • In December 2019, a pneumonia outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China. • 2019-nCoV is labelled by the World Health Organization (WHO). • The Wuhan strain has been identified as a new strain of Betacoronavirus from group 2B with an ~70% genetic similarity to the SARS-CoV.
  4. 4. -Enveloped virus -Positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome -Nucleocapsid of helical symmetry Components Spike (S) Envelope (E) Membrane (M) Nucleocapsid (N)
  5. 5. • Viral particles can transmit through air drop lets or droplet nuclei. • Incubation period of this virus is approximate 14 days . • Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.
  6. 6. • Fever • Cough • Shortness of breath • Breathing difficulties • Pneumonia • Severe acute respiratory syndrome • kidney failure and even death
  7. 7. • Viral particles can detect through electron microscopy • PCR finger printing
  8. 8. • Regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing can prevent spreading of viruses. • Eating of cooking meat and eggs. • There are no vaccines or antiviral drugs that are approved for prevention or treatment.
