computer
is one of the wonders of human ingenuity
e even in its original design in the 1950 to
a carry out complicated mathematical and
logical operations. Strategies to use the computer to
break the barrier to individualize instruction.
PC
. tool for program instruction
. affordable to small business, industries and home
. potential for individualization in learning
Computer - assisted instruction
the computer relieving the teacher of many activities in his/her personal role
as class room tutor but cannot totally replace the teacher since they continue
to play the major roles of information deliverer and learning environment
controller, the teacher must;
. ensure knowledge and skills for any computer activity to student
. decide the appropriate learning objectives
. plan the sequential and structured activities to achieve objectives
. evaluate the students achievement
Roles of learners in CAI
 Receive information
 Understand instruction for the computer activity
 Keep in mind the information and rules for the computer activity
 Apply the knowledge and rules during the process of computer learning
During the computer activity proper in CAI the computer
 Tutor
 Provides a learning environment
 Delivers learning instruction
 Reinforces learning trough drill and practice
 Provides feedback
CAI Integrated with lesson
Should not stop with the drill and practice activities of students . Best in reinforcing learning through
repetitive exercises.
Common types of drill and practices
 Vocabulary building
 Math facts
 Basic science
 History or geography facts
The computer present a question and immediate feedback.
When and how can teachers integrate drill and practice programs with their lessons? Suggestion can be
made
 Use for basic skills and knowledge that requires rapid or automatic response by students
 Ensure conform to the lesson plan/curriculum
 Limit to 20-30 min. to avoid boredom
 Use to assist students with particular weakness in basic skills.
While practice exercise or learning by doing is still
the heart of each tutorial, the tutorial software
should;
 Able to teach new content/new information to students
 Provide comprehensive information on concepts
 Effectively use for remediation , reviewing, or enrichment
 Follow up question to stimulate students learning
 Group activity for cooperative learning
Simulation program
Are constructivist in nature. These simulation software:
 Teaches strategies and rules applied to real life problems/situation
 Ask student to make decision on models or scenario
 Allows student to manipulate elements of a model and get the experience of the effects of their
decision
Instructional game
Add the elements of competition and challenge. Can be played by up
to 4 players to form a team. Outcomes achieved along simple memorization of
information , keyboarding skills, cooperation and social interaction.
Problem solving software
More sophisticated than the drill and practice exercises and allow
students to learn and improve on their problem solving ability.
Multimedia Encyclopedia and Electronic book
 Multimedia Encyclopedia can store a huge database with text,
images, animation, audio and video. Students can access any desired
information , search its vast contents, and even download/ print relevant
portions of the data for their composition r presentation.
 Electronic books provide textual information for reading,
supplemented by other types of multimedia information (sound, spoken
words, pictures, animation). This are useful for learning reading, spelling and
words skills.
