Comparing Guernica And The Executions Of The Third Of May
Critical Thinking: "Guernica" and the "Executions of the Third of May"
Comparing and contrasting the two paintings, "Guernica" created by Pablo Picasso and "Executions
of the Third of May" created by Franciso de Goya show some similarities between the paintings.
The time period of which they were created is rather different. With "Guernica" being painted in
1937 and "Executions of the Third of May" being painted in 1808, one would argue that there could
never be any similarities. Although they were created in such different times, they share some of the
same meanings. Both exhibit sadness and destruction from a superior. It is clear in both paintings
that the people have been exhausted and have fought till the death. Although they have similar
meaning they do not share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting was 11 x 25 feet. Picasso, a Spaniard himself, was commissioned by the Spanish
government to paint a mural for the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris World's Fair in 1937. Picasso put
off painting the mural for the government when he learned of a bombing in Guernica, Spain.
German Nazis bombed the country village Guernica in Spain in1937. The Germans did not drop the
bombs for military engagement; they did it for a test. The Germans needed to see how efficient their
bombs were, and if they could take out whole towns. Unfortunately, the Nazis were successful.
Picasso decided to paint the mural in honor of those who were killed in Guernica. Picasso chose to
keep the painting in white and grey. In the painting, Picasso has animals and people. The people are
in distress and fighting. For example a man is holding a sword in his hand obviously exhausted and
a mother is holding her child in her arms in complete distress. The animals are in overwhelmed, and
a buffalo is standing above a woman holding her dead child ready for

Gin Lane Analysis
Colorless Appeal According to Artlex, there is no set definition of death; "More difficult than
defining death can be coming to terms with it when others die..." "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso, and
"Gin Lane" by William Hogarth have the similar motif of death. "Guernica" portrays this in its
depiction of war, while "Gin Lane" showcases the lethal effects of alcoholism. Aside from theme,
color symbolism is vital in the analysis of the artwork. The artist's color usage gives the audience a
glimpse into the emotions and tone behind the piece. Both pieces are representations of death in
response to political issues by focusing on the context of the artwork rather than visual appeal. The
explicit images of death in both "Guernica" and "Gin Lane" relate to both work's lack of color.
Picasso's painting "Guernica" was a reaction piece influenced by the Spanish Civil War. According
to the UK's History Learning Site, German forces bombed the small town of Guernica killing 1,654
civilians and wounding 889. In the painting itself, there is an absence of color; it's strictly black,
white and grey. These three colors are symbolic of death, anger, sadness, innocence, peace, and
conservative. The colors also embody the emotions during the bombing and of Picasso himself
because of the 1,654 deaths ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shabi's article entitled, "Guernica: Meaning Analysis & Interpretation of Painting by Pablo Picasso"
he quotes Picasso, "My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle
against reaction and the death of art." Picasso also has another painting entitled, "The Old Guitarist".
According to Pablopicasso.org, a website dedicated to the artwork and style of Picasso, this painting
was painted after the suicide of Picasso's close friend. This painting also depicts death, however the
color scheme of blues and greys are present. Blue is symbolic of mourning, and depression. Despite
the lack of color in "Guernica" the unequivocal images of death alone appeal to

Symbolism In Guernica
Guernica, the title of the painting, is a town in Basque Country, Spain. It was the target of terror
bombing during the Spanish civil war because it was the northern bastion of the Republican
resistance movement.
First, war is depicted as devastating and it cares no one – men, women, grandparents, children
neither animals. Everyone is a victim. By looking at the paintings, the people are in pain. With their
mouth open that might mean streaming out their agony; with their fingers wide spread, they might
asking for hands to hold them up. In a war, there are dead people (the baby held by his mom and the
lying man); some protects their loved ones (the mother) even still suffering; people escapes even if
they are injured or had detached foot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The light bulb is the symbol of anti–war and that Picasso wants the people to open their eyes and to
see what war could bring in our society. Everyone has their limitless potentials that can bring a
brighter future. This makes the painting connected to the present time and the future. Fourth, as
interpreted by Ray (2006), the shape and posture of the bodies express protest while the flaming
buildings and crumbled walls reflect destructive power of civil war. The newspaper background is
the means by how the painted knew the massacre. Both Berger (1980) and Chipp (1988) cited by
Ray (2006), believe that the broken sword in the painting mean defeats of the people. Overall, this is
a less optimistic painting that does not reference to the actual bombing of Guernica (Brunner, 2001).
Rather it presents a visceral depiction of terror, chaos, and grief. Sandberg (1960) quoted that
Guernica is a "pathetic symbol of the recent past and a warning for the

What Is Pablo Picasso Inhumanity
Pablo Picasso a famous Spanish artist, painted a piece that is breath taking, the Guernica. It was
painted as a reaction to the aerial bombing of Guernica, Spain by German and Italian forces during
the Spanish Civil War in 1937.The artwork shows tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicted upon
innocent civilians, and animals. The grey, black, and white mural–size canvas painted in oil stood 11
ft tall and 25.6 wide, the acceptable size to tell a story that needed to be heard. The cinematic impact
that automatically catches the eye, shows there is human despair. In this search for human
proportions nearly lost after the bombing dismembered and ripped apart everyone to leave humanity
disjointed. This large canvas carries my focus from inhumanity, ... Show more content on

The first is a human skull superimposed on the body of the horse. Second, is a bull goring the horse
from below. The head of the bull is formed largely by the front leg of the horse, which has its knee
on the ground. The knee cap of the horse makes up the bull's nose, and the bull's horn jabs at the
horse's breast. Underneath the horse lies a dead mutilated soldier, the hand of his severed arm still
grasping a broken sword, from which a flower springs up. Also In the open palm of the dead soldier
is a stigmata, symbolic of the sacrifices of Jesus Christ. The lantern and light bulb on the ceiling in
the room is another interesting feature of the painting. The light bulb is surrounded by rays, which
makes it look like the sun. The sun is the ultimate sign of life, and none of us can survive without
the sun. The bulb can also be associated with the Spanish word for lightbulb, "bombilla". This
brings to mind the word "bomb", which could symbolize the l impact of the bombing on humanity.
The light bulb represents life, but also the death brought by the bombs that fell on Guernica. There
are open doors at the very right of the painting as well as windows. The door appears to lead to a
possible way to escape the terror within. Although the door is open now, it shows how easily that
door could be shut and how easily escape could be cut off. The windows show that if something is
not done to end the brutality of things

Spanish Civil War And The Bombing Of Guernica
Spanish Civil War began in 1936 as a military revolt against the Republican government of Spain.
Civil war broke out when the military coupe did not work out. Nationalists, those that were
revolting, were supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Republicans, those that were
protecting Spain, received some aid from the Soviet Union and volunteers from Europe and the
United States. Nationalists heavily outnumbered the Republicans in manpower and firepower mostly
because of all the resources Germany provided them. The number of deaths during the war is
estimated to be about 500,000. About 100,000 of those deaths were Spanish people who were killed
in bomb raids. The War was used by Germany as testing grounds for new military tactics, which
were later used in World War II. One unfortunate city that these tactics were practiced on was
Guernica, a city of about 5,000 people and no strategic value as a military target

On April 26,1936, the innocent town was bombed by about 25 of Germany's best–equipped bomber
planes (Guernica...bombing of Guernica). It took about three hours to demolish the town into rubble.
On that particular day it happened to be a market day, so people from all around the town were in
the town square. " 'Every Monday was a fair in Guernica,' says José Monasterio, eyewitness to the
bombing. 'They attacked when there were a lot of people there. And they knew when their bombing
would kill the most. When there are more people, more people would die'" (Guernica... bombing of

wounded. This attack was practice of Germany's military tactic called Blitzkrieg, which is a
lightening fast attack on the opposition. This blanket–bombing tactic on the civilian population of

Guernica Picasso Analysis
Pablo Picasso's painting, "Guernica", uses the elements of color, lines, composition, shape, and size
to assert the message: how life during World War II lead to the ruin of human emotions. The
message of this painting is intriguing and engages the audience's attention. The logic of this painting
is brought about in Picasso's idea of portraying the corrupt way of living during World War II, a war
that changed history. Emotions clearly exposed in the painting encircle around depression, worry,
and with glimmers of hope. These emotions may even be displayed as a result of the ethnicity
belonging to the person; a family member fighting in the war.
Picasso began this piece in the month of May, in the year of 1937, around the time of World War II
and the Spanish Civil War. He had heard about the bombing in Guernica, Spain, his home country,
and felt the need to portray his thoughts. Hitler had taken part in this bombing to test Germany's new
military weapons. This painting was made to bring people's attention to the way war affects
everyone. The article "Guernica, 1937 by Pablo Picasso" states that the, "Guernica is certainly his
most powerful, political statement" (Guernica, 1937 Pablo Picasso pg. 1).
Color offers a great testimony in portraying the message, with reference to this painting. The
thoughts received while observing colors connect to a stretched outline of emotions. No bright
colors are used, only colors relating to black, white, and grey; these colors represent

The Two Fridas Picasso
Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and co–founder of
the Cubist movement, was a participant in Europe's political discourse during most of the early
1900s. Picasso's Guernica, one of his most powerful political statements, was painted as an
immediate reaction to the Nazi's casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during
the Spanish Civil War. Guernica, a mural–size canvas painted in blue, black, and white oil, shows
tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. Picasso
depicts turmoil, people and animals suffering, with building in disarray torn apart by violence and
mayhem. With Guernica, Picasso establishes his identity and his strength as an artist when
confronted with political authority and intolerable violence, especially in his native land.

She mostly painted self–portraits that depicted the sense of who she was. Kahlo's The Two Fridas,
an oil painting, is an excellent example of how Frida Kahlo struggled with self and cultural identity.
The Two Fridas is a self–painting of a dual image of Kahlo, one in traditional Mexican garb and the
other in European influenced fashion. Frida Kahlo, an European–influenced painter, painted many
elements of Mexican culture including folkloric images and the Tehuana costume – which is
depicted in The Two Fridas. She also wore the Tehuana herself to demonstrate the cultural
independence of Mexico but also to help her identify with the poor and the peasants during the
Mexican Revolution. Her artwork particularly speaks to women, especially women's experiences of
physical and emotional pain which is symbolized by the many broken hearts in her self–portraits,
also shown in The Two Fridas. Kalho's work successfully succeeds in illustrating her personality,
life experiences, and national

Pablo Picasso And Picage Seurat Analysis
"How can a painting have so much to say" Is one question that people may ask themselves. Telling
stories and expressing one's self in paintings brings one to show others a new way of seeing and
thinking about life. The canvas of every writer is easy to visualize or to relate to by how the painter
expressed himself and wanted to portray the message through a painting. From Pablo Picasso to
George Seurat and to so much more. The meaning and story of the panting's take you to a whole
different world. They make us view things differently and see things in a new perspective by how
the painter is showing or expressing themselves. They explain what they had to go through or what
was going on, by telling their story we can feel the emotion behind it as well as how raw it makes
one feel. Through the painting, one can make their assumptions about what the story is. The beauty
of art shows either the great or corrupt that the painter sees or the ongoing situation. They show the
people different perspectives of what's going on and they make you feel the same emotion that they
put on the painting. We see art as a way of expression and it makes us connect to the painting that
we see. The art helps us understand the way the person behind the drawing felt or what they saw
when it was going on. The beauty of art is that it lets everyone express themselves through painting,
so we can tell our story. Art is expressed through 1) human culture, 2) emotion, and 3)
communication.
Through human culture, the artist shows the emotion that takes place. Every artist expresses them in
a unique way. They focus on things that catch their eyes or things that they feel are important. The
artist paints to show the world many different sides of human culture as well as current events. For
example, Pablo Picasso painted a painting named Guernica which symbolized the horrors of war
and as a result, has become an anti–war symbol. He was protesting the bombing of Guernica. On the
far left is a woman, head back, screaming in pain and grief, holding the lifeless body of her dead
child. This is one of the most devastating and unforgettable images in the painting. To her right is

Identification and Evaluation of Sources:
The aim of this investigation is to explore, to what extent was art an expression of society after the
bombing in Guernica? These sources explain the causation of the bombing and how art expressed
society after the bombing. How the bombing influenced artists such as Picasso to paint one of his
most famous paintings and his emotions towards the bombing and how it made art his only weapon
to fight against the war.
Pablo Picasso's painting was painted in 1937, that painting is a highly valuable source towards the
investigation of the expression that the society had towards the bombing. This painting was created

Essay on Critical Analysis
Critical Analysis of Guernica – By Bryce Craig
Spanish artist Pablo Picasso can often be collectively seen as the greatest and most influential artist
of the twentieth century. In a historical sense he encompassed all that is to be a practicing modernist
artist and prevailed as one of the most significant artists overall in human history. Picasso's most
well renowned painting presents to his audience a graphic reflection of the horrors and brutality of
war; Guernica (1937) depicts the Spanish town of the same name being torn apart by the explosive
fury that was the German air raid on the innocent and unaware village during the Spanish Civil War.

Through his training he became proficient in countless fields but was predominately a painter and
famously explored the Cubist movement. Cubism was an art movement developed in the early 20th
century that was concerned with the dissembling of images and their analytical or synthetic
reconstruction, as well as the refinement of detail and emphasis on bold shape. Picasso found artists
such as Delacroix, Cezanne and Manet extremely influential, as well as his artistic father, Jose
Blasco. Through his challenging of convention to his persistent experimentation of concepts he
created some of the greatest artworks of the 20th century, such as The Old Guitarist, 1903, Les
Demoiselles d' Avignon, 1907 and his most well–known piece Guernica, 1937.
The audiences of Guernica, 1937 are presented with a chilling message of the terrors of war and its
traumatic impact on humanity; this is the understood function of Picasso's iconic painting, to evoke
emotional response and educate the public of the event. Picasso wished to express his anti–war
message to the people, and what more of an opportunity would he have then being commissioned
earlier that year to create an artwork for the 1937 World's Fair, Paris. After the initial exhibition the
work went on tour and has ending up in many different

Picasso's Guernica Throughout time paintings have been used to record events, communicate ideas
or evoke an emotional response. Pablo Picasso's painting Guernica does just this. Guernica was
created to bring attention to the Nazi bombing of the town of Guernica, Spain during the Spanish
civil war in the second half of the 1930s. Its exhibition was used to provide relief and a call against
the horrors of war. Through its visual elements and symbolic concepts, Guernica depicts the chaos
and aftermath of the bombing of the city and the need to bring about change over the tragedies of
war. Standing at a massive seven feet by twenty–five feet, this black and white painting depicts a
massacre of the bombing of the town of Guernica. The composition of the work is a dimly lit space,
the only light coming from an eye shaped light at center top of the painting and a woman holding a
lantern next to it. From left to right, the scene contains a screaming bull beneath it a woman holding
a dead child. In the center there is a mangled horse pierced by spear and below it, the mangled body
of a fallen soldier. To the right are three women, one crawling towards the light, above her is a
woman leaning out of a window holding a lit lantern and the other screaming while falling from a
burning building. Guernica captures the brutal chaos of the bombing with its physical action and
intended symbolism. Being black and white, the painting represents the somber

Pablo Picasso's Guernic Close Visual Analysis
Utilising, "The Study Diamond: effects, techniques, context and meaning" (The Open University,
2013, p. 76), this essay will argue through close visual analysis from an art history point of view that
Picasso's Guernica is a form of protest. The essay will also argue that Guernica's meaning has
changed to include becoming a symbol of peace and continues to fulfil its purpose as a form of
protest.
A large mural, Guernica is an example of Synthetic Cubism painted by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973).
Created using the medium of oil paint on canvas with a narrow palette consisting of the neutral
hues: white, grey and black; the formalist qualities of Guernica can have harrowing effects on the
spectator, "But to see it in real life, in its full size, is an even stronger emotional experience. Some
people have said they experienced an instant rush of many powerful, fearful emotions" (The Open
University, 2016, Block 3, 2.2.2).
Stark colour value distribution in Guernica's figures creates the effect of palpable tension.
Correspondingly, light grey contrasts with a dark grey or black background. A feature of Synthetic
Cubism, "There ... colours are muted, often virtually monochromatic greys or browns." Clarke (cited
in The Open University, 2016, Block 3, 2.2.4). The doorway at the centre of Guernica depicts a
figure carrying a lamp illuminating a scene of carnage within. This distinct contrast of colour
enhances the effect of Guernica's dark corners and can evoke feelings of impending doom.

Guernica by Pablo Picasso
In 1937, Pablo Picasso painted Guernica, oil on canvas. The Republican Spanish government
commissioned the mural for the 1937 World Fair in Paris. Guernica is a large mural, twenty–six feet
wide and eleven feet tall, and was placed at the entrance to Spain's pavilion. Picasso did not do any
work after receiving the commission until reading of the bombing of the Basque village of Guernica,
in Spain. It was that attack, perpetrated by the German Luftwaffe, that inspired him. Guernica,
however, is not a complete depiction of that event. In Guernica, Picasso masterfully conveys the
suffering of the Basque people and the tragedy of war. He seeks not to report on every detail of the

At the extreme right, a woman is falling and has not yet hit the ground. Further left, a woman is
picking herself up after falling. The horse in the center is fatally wounded and will soon die. To the
far left, the child in his mother's arms has already died, and so has the warrior whose head rests at
the bottom of the mural. But again, the strong right to left movement arises from the direction in
which the subjects are looking.
Guernica is monochromatic to make its imagery more powerful. Lack of color keeps the viewer
focused on the subject matter at hand, as well as keeping the mural cold, which agrees with its
general theme of injustice in war. Also, Picasso's flat imagery does not distract the viewer from
concentrating on imagery. The viewer is given no other choice than to concentrate on the subject
matter of Guernica and ponder it's meaning. The flat, grayscale images generalize the imagery and
contribute to the general theme of unnecessary suffering and tragedy.
At the extreme right of Picasso's mural, a woman is falling from a burning building. Flames appear
to be spewing from the top of that building. The flames consist triangles with different values of
gray. The same light triangles are coming from the woman's dress. Her arms flail upwards as she
falls, and it is her fall that draws the eye downward and moves the viewer through the work. Below
lies the woman picking herself up off the

Washington Crossing The Delaware: Painting Analysis
Important times in World history; two must come to mind: World War II and a piece of an American
legacy, when Washington crosses the Delaware. Both events were painted by some of the world's
most creative and well–known artists; Pablo Picasso and Emmanuel Leutze. At first glance, not
much is similar about these beautiful paintings, you may not even realize that there is more to the
story than what first greets your eyes.
The painting "Guernica", a black and white oil painting depicts the chaos that ensued World War II.
It was painted by Pablo Picasso in his sharp, shaped style. At first glance, you notice an
overwhelming amount of shapes, when looking closer those shapes become faces of despair and
distress, which as one could imagine that is what the people of Spain were feeling prior to the
bombing that inspired this painting. With odd shapes, and a large, chaos filled canvass, it defiantly
puts on display its uncanny ability to attract the viewer into digging into the deeper meaning of this
intriguing master piece.

Knowledge Is The Importance Of Knowledge
Knowledge is the understanding of something such as facts, information or descriptions. Many
might say that we acquire knowledge through experience which is true however, a combination of
stories and facts play a major role in gaining knowledge. A fact is a statement that is true and can be
proven through experimentation. Stories on the other hand are accounts of imaginary or real people
and events told for entertainment. One area of knowledge which mainly consists of facts but takes
the form of stories too is the natural sciences which have been used throughout the years to
understand the history of the natural world better. In art, another area of knowledge, stories play a
much more important role than facts in providing us knowledge. Many scientific discoveries which
largely impact our world nowadays, came about through accidental experimentations. Penicillin, a
group of antibiotics used to combat a variety of infections is an example of a serendipitous event
responsible for saving millions of lives. Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming's had left a dirty petri
dish in the lab sink, and after coming back from vacation, a culture of bacteria had grown all over
the plate, except in one area, where strange fungus was formed that had killed all of the surrounding
bacteria in the culture. Penicillin nowadays is an extremely important medicine for fighting
infections yet there was a chance that it wouldn't have been discovered. Furthermore, one of the

Guernica's History
The word art is an encompassing one, vastly interpreted and with multiple definitions. In the case of
Picasso's painting Guernica, art informs, educates and expresses. Its power lies in its ability to
capture and compel an audience nearly six decades after the modern world's "other" day of infamy.
To understand fully the painting that evolved out of the Spanish painter's outrage, one must know its
context. "Why do you think I date everything I do? Because it is not sufficient to know an artist's
works––it is also necessary to know when he did them, why, under what circumstances" (Picasso).

it did not cause the bridge the bridge to collapse, would doubtless have made it unsafe for traffic

Pablo Picasso Guernica vs. Theodore Gericault's Raft of...
For centuries artists have moved audiences through the use of pictures. As time progressed those
images became more and more demanding of the viewer until they were meant to invoke a physical
response. Perhaps the earliest account of such emotionally exact artwork is the 1818 piece, Raft of
the Medusa, by Theodore Gericault. As time progressed people became more politically aware and
involved and generations of art portrayed this. Pablo Picasso's Guernica, created in 1937, is a great
example of how modern times soon saw a peak in the occurrence of allegorical and politically
packed artworks. Gericault's The Raft of the Medusa and Picasso's Guernica are both horrifying

This predominantly two–toned color motif allowed for more focus to be drawn to the most dynamic
figures, which are the same humans Gericault wanted viewers to see and sympathize for.
While Gericault's, Raft of the Medusa was essentially criticized for its lack of direct criticism of the
event and more a display of the human element, it is this feature that made it characteristically
romantic. Gericault took the national scandal out of the papers and turned it into a personal event for
each of the passengers. Rather than depict the weltering bodies of the crew, he gave them more
muscular frames in vigorous poses. Originally setting out to portray the event as nothing more than
a visual truth, he shifted his focus to portray a greater truth of suffering.
The suffering is reflected in the face of every passenger and it is the main focus of the piece than
any other element. The Raft's theme of human suffering evoked empathy and compassion, which
helped project the image beyond any hopes the artist could have held for the piece. This
predominant focus on the human condition allowed a stereotypical Romantic piece. Another artist
famous for highlighting the human condition was Spanish–born, Pablo Picasso.
In 1936 the Spanish government commissioned Picasso to paint a feature piece for their

The Motifs In Pablo Picasso's Guernica
There have been countless interpretations of the motifs within Pablo Picasso's Guernica since it was
first exhibited in July of 1937 at the Paris International Exposition. Initially, the painting was not
well received by critics. It was presumably destined to collect dust at the back of Picasso's studio.
However, after the events of the Second World War, the imagery represented within Guernica
became painfully familiar. Its macabre elements strongly resonated with people from around the
globe, and the appalling atrocities suffered by many communities worldwide became synonymous
with both the painting and the town of Geurnica itself. His stylistic choices, the use of geometric
shapes and the mural's strong symbolism have contributed to its moving ... Show more content on

Today, it stands for human rights and peace, inspired by the tragic bombing of Geurnica on the 26th
of April, 1937 . After a civil war broke out between Spanish republicans and right–wing nationalists
in Spain in July of 1936, army commander General Franco was appointed head of state by the
military junta, backed by other political figureheads Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini . On that
fateful day in April of 1937, under the command of General Franco, the German air force bombed
and nearly obliterated the city of Guernica . Its historical significance of freedom and democracy for
the people of Spain were lost on Nazi forces. The bombing was later admitted to have been a trial to
test the effectiveness of new and experimental weaponry . At the time of the bombardment, Pablo
Picasso was living in Paris and had been commissioned by the Spanish Republican government for
their pavilion at the Paris World Fair. After the news of the attack, Picasso had finally found an
inspiration for his mural, Guernica : a protest against the military

Pablo Picasso Guernica
Importance of the work
From a patron's point of view, Guernica is a powerful tool that shows the absolute power of art in
society. It displays a sign of relevance in the use of art to communicate serious matters and helpful
ideas. Most people may view artwork as things for entertainment; some have been quoted to say
artists are crazy, somewhat lazy. It should be appreciated and understood clearly that the artists are
people of sound mind who sees things in the environment and chose to articulate critical human
issues using their creativity.
Picasso; the artist, seemed to be bound by many challenges in his life, just like any other person. He
was tortured by the brutal civil wars that were in his motherland (Spain). The political wrangles
went overboard and transformed into brutal killings. The forces from the Republicans that were
loyal to the ruling new government went embattled by the fascist coup that was organized by
General Franco. Contrary to his promises of stability and prosperity in Spain, Franco delivered
abundant destructions and deaths.
Guernica is thus important work at the time when it was created. Should we say it is up to date? Of
course yes. The prevailing at that time required a candid and brave way to say enough is enough to
the atrocities that were engulfing Spain. Picasso chose the initiative although after being disturbed
for almost three months by

Van Gogh Motives
As humans have changed and progressed throughout history, so has their art– from cave paintings to
Greek sculptures to the incredible realism of the Renaissance. In addition, throughout history art has
been questioned– why did the artist make this? What are they trying to convey? What is the purpose,
the symbol, the reason? Every artist has a motive for creating, and it may be as honorable as
challenging a social injustice, or as mundane as a commission. The three most universal motives for
making art are for beauty, for money on commission, and to convey a message about the artist's
thoughts or emotions on a subject. Each of these motives can be influential, however conveying a
concept through art is the most powerful, as it has the ability to change the way society operates.
It is often said that art is meant to be beautiful for the audience. Artists follow this idea by making
and being inspired by beautiful objects such as nature or other people. One artist who displays this is
Vincent Van Gogh. Many of Van Gogh's paintings are based on the things around him, including
flowers, stars, or people. It is known that he was not on commission, as he only sold one painting in
his life. Although it is true that many of his paintings show great emotion, Van Gogh was not
specifically trying to say something, and any message in his paintings are assumed from his mental
illnesses. Although not considered beautiful in their time, Van Gogh painted to capture the beauty
around him. For

How Did Guernica Change
"Guernica" is named after a village in Spain. In 1937, Picasso got his inspiration for creating this
painting after Guernica was bombed by German and Italian planes. Thousands of deadly bombs
were dropped over Guernica that left this small village in ruins. Thousands of people were killed and
injured. And the fires created by the bombs destroyed 70 percent of Guernica.
Prior to the bombing of Guernica, Picasso was in the process of creating another piece of art for the
Paris Exhibition, but after hearing the horrific news about the bombing of Guernica, Picasso
changed his course, and started working on a new mural titled "Guernica." Guernica was ordered by
the Republic of Spain. Picasso's painting demonstrates his interpretation of the

Analysis Of Pablo Picasso's Guernica
In June of 1937, Pablo Picasso completed what some consider to be one of the most influential
pieces of artwork ever created, Guernica. The piece was commissioned by the Spanish Republican
government for an international exhibition in Paris. Originally Picasso had a completely different
subject in mind, but on April 26, the revered Spanish town of Guernica became the first occupied
civilian center decimated by carpet bombs. The complete and total destruction of the ancient and
honored Spanish town ordered by fascist Francisco Franco and carried out by Nazi German allies
outraged Picasso and was the inspiration for this work. Picasso's Guernica is internationally known
as a symbol for the destruction of war and it had such immense significance during the Spanish
Civil War as it does now because of the form, composition, and content.
The canvas in which Guernica is painted on was a large undertaking for Picasso, in fact, it was so
enormous that Picasso had to find a larger studio. At 11.5 feet tall and 25.5 feet wide, he had to and
use a ladder in order to paint parts of it. Using shades of grey, black, and white oil paint along with
textural elements, he created the masterpiece we know today. Aspects of the composition are
influenced by Picasso's cubist style, this can be seen by his use of multiple viewpoints and shifting
perspective in the piece creating a unique visual experience for the viewer (Arnheim 51). Picasso
also doesn't adhere to traditional depictions of body

Guernica, is a painting made by Pablo Picasso in 1937, and it is a huge mural hanging in the Reina
Sofia Museum. Picasso wanted to create a picture that shows the suffering of innocent people in
times of war. Also, he wanted a way to express his anger towards what was happening and towards
war in general. The painting was made after Picasso learned about the tragedy that struck Guernica
town during War World Two. When observing the painting, one can notice it was made using only
three colors, white, black, and grey. The symbols in the painting are not always obvious, and one
needs to look thoroughly to be able to decipher all of them. However, the images in the painting

The bull has a white head and a dark body. Unlike the other figures in the mural, the bull seems to
be unharmed and calm. Some believe that Picasso added the bull because it represent the artist

brutality or the sides of the conflict in Spain at that time. To the right of the bull there is a horse that
looks like in deep pain and screaming, it looks as if it was injured and dying. The horse might
symbolize the people who got hurt during the attack on Guernica. Between the bull and the horse
some kind of birds that is most likely a pigeon. The pigeons have commonly been known to be signs
of peace, but in this painting the pigeon's peck is open as if it is screeching. Looking further to the
right, there is a women floating with a lantern in her hand. She might be an angel holding a light for
the victims of that massacre that happened in the village, and she is guiding the souls to the afterlife.
The women beneath her seems to be in agony and pain. The women is half naked with her breasts
showing, and she looks as if she is running for her life in fear and terror. Also, the women is looking

flower that is a weak living creature looks as if it is also trying to survive the horrors surrounding it.

Guernica is another perfect example of Picasso exhibiting history in his work. The mural–sized oil
painting on canvas was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1937. It is painted in a palette of grey, black and
white and is regarded by many as "modern art's most powerful antiwar statement". The mural
exhibits suffering people and animals wrenched by violence and chaos. A gored horse, a bull and
flames are prominent features of the artwork. Guernica displays the tragedies of war and the
suffering it imposes on individuals, specifically innocent civilians. The lack of colour intensifies the
chaos and the tragedy. Guernica is a town in the province of Biscay in Basque Country. On Monday
26th April 1937, warplanes of the German Condor Legion bombed Guernica for two hours. At the
time. Picasso was working on a mural for the Paris Exhibition that was to be held in the summer of

Key figures such as the bull, the agonized horse and a woman with outstretched arms were perfected
in sketch after sketch before being transferred onto the canvas. "A painting is not thought out and
settled in advance," Picasso said. "While it is being done, it changes as one's thoughts change. And
when it is finished, it goes on changing, according to the state of mind of whoever is looking at it."
The bull and the horse are both important characters in Spanish culture. The rampaging bull is
thought to represent the onslaught of Fascism. Picasso said the bull meant brutality and darkness
while the horse represented the people of Guernica. The painting was at first overwhelmingly
criticised as Cubism was still a fairly new concept at this time. Picasso continued producing work

Picasso's World War II Revolutionary Painting Right from the brink of World War II in 1939, an
abundant amount of distinguished artwork was created in response to the events that took place
before, during, and after the War. There is one painting in particular that I am referring to. This
painting is none other than, famous artist, Pablo Picasso's painting of Guernica. Guernica is a
famous piece of artwork created in 1937. It depicts the bombings of a Basque Country village in
northern Spain by German and Italian warplanes during the Spanish Civil War. The attack was
unsuspected and unavoidable. Nearly three–quarters of the people's homes were demolished and a
large number of their population perished. In the following paragraphs, I would like to talk briefly
about Guernica in the sense of its content and historical context that pertain to World War II. In the
painting known as Guernica, Picasso portrays a scene of endless violence, suffering, and of course
death. When one looks at the painting of Guernica as a whole, one can see that there is a lot of
conflict going on all at once in this painting. When breaking it down, first one might notice that in
the top left hand corner of the painting there is a bull. The bull is a symbol for the Spanish rituals of
bullfighting which than pertains to the nature of death from how all these bulls are killed in these
fights to the death. Next, one can depict in the bottom left corner of the painting, a figure who is

Guernica: Investigating the Impact Essay
In times of crisis and public upheaval, artistic representations emerge as both a way of remembering
an event historically and as a means to interpret and overcome the past. This response is universal,
and in the case of Picasso's Guernica, the emotional, social, and political impact it had and continues
to have on people perpetuates its complex universality. Guernica became a symbol of pride to the
Republican supporters and a force to be reckoned with for General Franco and the Nationalists. The
painting's overwhelming response from both sides aided in the call for European and international
awareness of the Spanish Civil War and reflected a horrified outrage towards immoral bloodshed –
an emotion so familiar throughout the world that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an effort to break the morale and cause panic among his opposition, Franco sanctioned the aerial
bombardment of Guernica, a historically significant Basque town, by his German and Italian allies.
The date was April 26, 1937, and after the bombing finished Guernica was left in shambles with
many of its citizens killed and the rest fleeing out of fear. This strategy of attacking civilian centers
was a preamble to what would be experienced during WWII.
Pablo Picasso, an already famous Spanish painter and expatriate, was living in Paris at the time of
the incident. The mixture of anger and grief he felt translated into the artistic Republican protest we
know as Guernica. Picasso unveiled his representation during the 1937 Paris International
Exhibition (or World's Fair) only weeks after the event occurred. The fair was meant to be a
celebration of modern technology, but the work exhibited in the Spanish Pavilion by Picasso and
other Spanish artists was adverse to this intent. Although the Spanish Pavilion opened late in the
Fair (and therefore lost a lot of its potential publicity and initial effectiveness), the people who
entered were disillusioned by what they saw. Guernica, which many had preconceived notions of
already, received mixed reviews: some were overly critical and equated Picasso's work to that of a
child's, others reacted in the same way they did to his other works – with confusion and a
misunderstanding of the surrealist and cubist style. Conversely, some

Picasso's Guernica is very representational but I can also see so abstract aspects in a weird way.
Goya's Third of May is naturalistic and representational but unlike Guernica we can clearly see the
people who are in charge causing the struggle. In both paintings the value of the light plays
important role in the paintings. Picasso uses shades of black and white to show all the different
aspects and the painting. Goya uses the value of the light to direct our attention to the main events in

lines which effects the flow of the painting. In both of the paintings the background of the paintings
are very similar. People, places, animals and things are being destroyed because of ruling issues. In
Goya's painting to can see hopelessness and suffering on the man's face while begging for his life.

Picasso's Guernica: An analysis based on the methodologies provided by Panofsky and Barthes
In January 1937, Pablo Picasso accepted the commission for a 25 foot long mural for the Spanish
pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (Borja–Villel
et al., 2010). This exposition was a creation of the Spanish Government in exile, at the time of the
Civil War. Therefore it was imbued with political and diplomatic meanings and served as
propaganda for the Republican Government (Borja–Villel et al., 2010). The subject matter of the
painting is the attack on the Basque town of Guernica by German planes (Borja–Villel et al., 2010).
However, this event per se is not what is highlighted in the painting. Picasso used this scene to
demonstrate his personal rejection of war and, taking this further, to demonstrate to the world the
costly struggle by the Spanish people in search for freedom (Borja–Villel et al., 2010; Corbin,
1999). As a result, Guernica became to be a worldwide icon for political protest (Kopper, 2014). The

humans can no longer procreate, Theo Faron a former activist, agrees to help transport a
miraculously pregnant woman, Named Kee, to a sanctuary located out at sea, where her child's birth
could help scientists save mankind. In the film Children of Men, there are many crucial scenes to
help convey the idea of the film, however I find one of these scenes particularly important; namely

The images and lighting are similar to images that record the suffering of people during the
depression of the 1930s. However, inside the park the weather starts to brighten making everything
look lush and vibrant. It seems absurd to see such a strong contrast after passing through the
imperial gates. This brings to mind the saying "The grass is always greener on the other side" This
helps to show how the members of the public see this part of London as a desired thing and that
everything is better, but this saying usually ends up being false; these people still live in the same
world, it is all an illusion, Further on in the scene Theo says to his cousin Nigel, "A hundred years
from now, there won't be one single sad f**k to look at any of this (meaning his apartment). What
keeps you going?" To which Nigel replies "You know what it is, Theo? I just don't think about it".
He is just ignoring the inevitable.
Mise–en–scene creates a shocking impact as the viewer draws on their prior knowledge to make
connections to the symbols revealed in this sequence. As Theo crosses the bridge to the Ark of Arts,
above the Battersea power station, you can see a floating pig, reminiscent of Pink Floyd's album

Guernica and Executions of the Third of May, 1808
There are two events that were so emotional within Spanish history that we hear about them even
today. Not only do we hear about them, but we can see and relate the emotions through two very
popular artworks done by Spaniards who were directly affected by these events. Francisco de Goya
and Pablo Picasso used their artistic talents to record these events. There are many differences
within these two artworks. However, there are also many similarities, even though these artworks
were constructed in two different centuries. Francisco de Goya has painted an image to show a time

Utilizing his talent as an artist, Goya painted, an eight feet and nine inches by thirteen feet and four

he used whites, yellows, and reds to highlight important features in the work. The executions
occurred during the invasion of Spain by Napoleon and his troops in 1808. This particular event
took a toll on Goya because he was a Spaniard himself. This is an image of actual events that
occurred on the hill of Principe Pio and the battle at Medina del Rio. Goya's strategy was to use
psychological forces to direct not only our eyes but also our sympathy to the painting. He gains our
sympathy by using the faces of the rebels as focal points in the painting. He painted the soldiers and
their rifles in a way to create direction that forces the viewers to focus on the rebel with his hands

pants. The rebel's face shows grief and anguish, but his arms are in the shape of a v which may

Abstract
This report examines the history of the artist Pablo Picasso and his famous painting of the Guernica.
Artwork Analysis Report
Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. His full name is Pablo Diego José
Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad
Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso; a very long name representing a variety of relatives. Picasso's
mother was Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez. His father was Don José Ruiz Blasco, a painter and art
teacher. According to Biography (2017), "A serious and prematurely world–weary child, the young
Picasso possessed a pair of piercing, watchful black eyes that seemed to mark him destined for
greatness...when I was a child, my mother said to me, if you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If
you become a monk you'll end up as the pope, Instead, I became a painter and wound up as
Picasso". Picasso was a poor student but he displayed an extraordinary talent for drawing at a very
young age. According to Biography (2017), "Picasso's father began teaching him to draw and paint
when he was a child, and by the time he was 13 years old, his skill level had surpassed his father's".
Soon, Picasso lost interest to do any schoolwork and he chose to draw instead. Picasso stated in
Biography (2017), "For being a bad student, I was banished to the 'calaboose,' a bare cell with
whitewashed walls and a bench to sit on," he later remembered. "I liked it there, because I took
along a sketch pad and drew incessantly... I could have stayed there forever, drawing without
stopping"(Picasso 2017).
Pablo Picasso became a Cubist Spanish painter, who painted the image named Guernica in the 1937.
From 1927 onward, Picasso was part of the surrealism movement, which led him into Cubism.
Cubists painting are objects that are broken apart and reassembled in an abstracted form. It
highlights their composite geometric shapes and depicting them from multiple simultaneous
viewpoints in order to create cubism shock. According to the Spanish Arts web page (2011), " The

In 1936, the Spanish Republican government asked Pablo Picasso, the popular Spanish painter, to
create a piece for the Paris World's Fair in 1937. Picasso created the painting "Guernica" with an
underlying political theme that outlined the recent events of the Spanish Civil War, in which he
never explicitly painted for social/civic interests prior to "Guernica". The celebration of the Paris
World Fair was aimed for technological expansion, but the painting didn't follow the same
aspirations as the exposition.
The painting lies at its overwhelming size of 11.5 feet tall by 25.5 feet wide. Some viewers describe
the paintings emotional intensity derives from the vast capacity, causing the feeling that it

the vastness of European paintings of the time, "Guernica" also contrasts and expresses a different
message of most artworks created in the era by opposing the desire for war, instead of elevating
nationalistic ideals and wanting the victory of war.
The city in which the painting describes exists in the North of Spain, primarily in the Basque
country. Nationalist advocates for the Spanish Civil War describe Guernica as the center for culture

Guernica Guernica was painted in 1937 by Pablo Picasso. It stands at 11'6'' tall and 25'6'' wide and is
considered one of the most powerful paintings ever created. The work depicts the bombing of the
city Guernica in Spain. The painting is a great piece of art because of its symbolism, solemn mood,
and it contains many artistic elements. Don't change sentence structure at the end. Change "contains

Tensions were high in 1937 in Europe with World War Two on the rise. Spain was controlled by
Francisco Franco, a friend of Hitler. Picasso was born in Spain and was devastated to see it be ruled
by a fascist who has taken over the country. Hitler, preparing for a world war, was making new
weapons and asked Franco if he could test them on a spanish city. On April 26, 1937, the German
Condor Legion bombed the city of Guernica in Northern Spain, all with the permission of Franco.
The bombing killed over a thousand people and left the world shocked. Picasso's oil painting on
canvas captures both the reactions of the public and the pain of the innocent civilians who died.
Guernica was originally panned by critics in the world. Many people criticized Picasso's style of

people wouldn't have known that the painting was about the bombing if there wasn't a title. This is

The Effects Of Guernica By Pablo Picasso
1. Introduction
The painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso was created in response to the bombing of Guernica during
the Spanish Civil War and it serves to highlight the atrocities that resulted from it. This essay will
explore the relationship between art and war, with particular reference to Picasso's Guernica. This
will be achieved my discussing firstly the background that came prior to the painting and to the
event itself. Secondly, it will be proved by drawing conclusions on what the painting serves to
resemble. Lastly, it will discuss the effects of that the painting Guernica has continued to have even
after the Spanish civil war.
2. The emergence of Cubism
The Cubism movement was founded in the twentieth century by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque
as a radical from of modern art. Cubism emerged as a response to the swiftly changing world (Doss,
2003:1). Cubism was a rejection of the traditional art values, styles and forms that accompanied the

This indirect reference is manifested in the fact that there is no actual evidence or depiction of any
bombs, planes or warfare that would resemble either the Spanish civil war or the bombing of
Guernica. Instead, there it is a depiction of the general human suffering and loss that serves as a
cross–cultural and worldwide representation of the atrocities of war. Guernica (figure 1) is therefore
a political commentary on the Spanish civil war, and in particular on the bombing of Guernica, that
is a reflection and symbol of the effects, rather than the cause of the bombing and warfare (Polombo,

Comparing Guernica And The Executions Of The Third Of May

  • 1. Comparing Guernica And The Executions Of The Third Of May Critical Thinking: "Guernica" and the "Executions of the Third of May" Comparing and contrasting the two paintings, "Guernica" created by Pablo Picasso and "Executions of the Third of May" created by Franciso de Goya show some similarities between the paintings. The time period of which they were created is rather different. With "Guernica" being painted in 1937 and "Executions of the Third of May" being painted in 1808, one would argue that there could never be any similarities. Although they were created in such different times, they share some of the same meanings. Both exhibit sadness and destruction from a superior. It is clear in both paintings that the people have been exhausted and have fought till the death. Although they have similar meaning they do not share ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The painting was 11 x 25 feet. Picasso, a Spaniard himself, was commissioned by the Spanish government to paint a mural for the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris World's Fair in 1937. Picasso put off painting the mural for the government when he learned of a bombing in Guernica, Spain. German Nazis bombed the country village Guernica in Spain in1937. The Germans did not drop the bombs for military engagement; they did it for a test. The Germans needed to see how efficient their bombs were, and if they could take out whole towns. Unfortunately, the Nazis were successful. Picasso decided to paint the mural in honor of those who were killed in Guernica. Picasso chose to keep the painting in white and grey. In the painting, Picasso has animals and people. The people are in distress and fighting. For example a man is holding a sword in his hand obviously exhausted and a mother is holding her child in her arms in complete distress. The animals are in overwhelmed, and a buffalo is standing above a woman holding her dead child ready for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Gin Lane Analysis Colorless Appeal According to Artlex, there is no set definition of death; "More difficult than defining death can be coming to terms with it when others die..." "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso, and "Gin Lane" by William Hogarth have the similar motif of death. "Guernica" portrays this in its depiction of war, while "Gin Lane" showcases the lethal effects of alcoholism. Aside from theme, color symbolism is vital in the analysis of the artwork. The artist's color usage gives the audience a glimpse into the emotions and tone behind the piece. Both pieces are representations of death in response to political issues by focusing on the context of the artwork rather than visual appeal. The explicit images of death in both "Guernica" and "Gin Lane" relate to both work's lack of color. Picasso's painting "Guernica" was a reaction piece influenced by the Spanish Civil War. According to the UK's History Learning Site, German forces bombed the small town of Guernica killing 1,654 civilians and wounding 889. In the painting itself, there is an absence of color; it's strictly black, white and grey. These three colors are symbolic of death, anger, sadness, innocence, peace, and conservative. The colors also embody the emotions during the bombing and of Picasso himself because of the 1,654 deaths ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shabi's article entitled, "Guernica: Meaning Analysis & Interpretation of Painting by Pablo Picasso" he quotes Picasso, "My whole life as an artist has been nothing more than a continuous struggle against reaction and the death of art." Picasso also has another painting entitled, "The Old Guitarist". According to Pablopicasso.org, a website dedicated to the artwork and style of Picasso, this painting was painted after the suicide of Picasso's close friend. This painting also depicts death, however the color scheme of blues and greys are present. Blue is symbolic of mourning, and depression. Despite the lack of color in "Guernica" the unequivocal images of death alone appeal to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Symbolism In Guernica Guernica, the title of the painting, is a town in Basque Country, Spain. It was the target of terror bombing during the Spanish civil war because it was the northern bastion of the Republican resistance movement. First, war is depicted as devastating and it cares no one – men, women, grandparents, children neither animals. Everyone is a victim. By looking at the paintings, the people are in pain. With their mouth open that might mean streaming out their agony; with their fingers wide spread, they might asking for hands to hold them up. In a war, there are dead people (the baby held by his mom and the lying man); some protects their loved ones (the mother) even still suffering; people escapes even if they are injured or had detached foot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The light bulb is the symbol of anti–war and that Picasso wants the people to open their eyes and to see what war could bring in our society. Everyone has their limitless potentials that can bring a brighter future. This makes the painting connected to the present time and the future. Fourth, as interpreted by Ray (2006), the shape and posture of the bodies express protest while the flaming buildings and crumbled walls reflect destructive power of civil war. The newspaper background is the means by how the painted knew the massacre. Both Berger (1980) and Chipp (1988) cited by Ray (2006), believe that the broken sword in the painting mean defeats of the people. Overall, this is a less optimistic painting that does not reference to the actual bombing of Guernica (Brunner, 2001). Rather it presents a visceral depiction of terror, chaos, and grief. Sandberg (1960) quoted that Guernica is a "pathetic symbol of the recent past and a warning for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. What Is Pablo Picasso Inhumanity Pablo Picasso a famous Spanish artist, painted a piece that is breath taking, the Guernica. It was painted as a reaction to the aerial bombing of Guernica, Spain by German and Italian forces during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.The artwork shows tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicted upon innocent civilians, and animals. The grey, black, and white mural–size canvas painted in oil stood 11 ft tall and 25.6 wide, the acceptable size to tell a story that needed to be heard. The cinematic impact that automatically catches the eye, shows there is human despair. In this search for human proportions nearly lost after the bombing dismembered and ripped apart everyone to leave humanity disjointed. This large canvas carries my focus from inhumanity, ... The head of the bull is formed largely by the front leg of the horse, which has its knee on the ground. The knee cap of the horse makes up the bull's nose, and the bull's horn jabs at the horse's breast. Underneath the horse lies a dead mutilated soldier, the hand of his severed arm still grasping a broken sword, from which a flower springs up. Also In the open palm of the dead soldier is a stigmata, symbolic of the sacrifices of Jesus Christ. The lantern and light bulb on the ceiling in the room is another interesting feature of the painting. The light bulb is surrounded by rays, which makes it look like the sun. The sun is the ultimate sign of life, and none of us can survive without the sun. The bulb can also be associated with the Spanish word for lightbulb, "bombilla". This brings to mind the word "bomb", which could symbolize the l impact of the bombing on humanity. The light bulb represents life, but also the death brought by the bombs that fell on Guernica. There are open doors at the very right of the painting as well as windows. The door appears to lead to a possible way to escape the terror within. Although the door is open now, it shows how easily that door could be shut and how easily escape could be cut off. The windows show that if something is not done to end the brutality of things ... • 5. Spanish Civil War And The Bombing Of Guernica Spanish Civil War began in 1936 as a military revolt against the Republican government of Spain. Civil war broke out when the military coupe did not work out. Nationalists, those that were revolting, were supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Republicans, those that were protecting Spain, received some aid from the Soviet Union and volunteers from Europe and the United States. Nationalists heavily outnumbered the Republicans in manpower and firepower mostly because of all the resources Germany provided them. The number of deaths during the war is estimated to be about 500,000. About 100,000 of those deaths were Spanish people who were killed in bomb raids. The War was used by Germany as testing grounds for new military tactics, which were later used in World War II. One unfortunate city that these tactics were practiced on was Guernica, a city of about 5,000 people and no strategic value as a military target (Guernica...bombing of Guernica). ... It took about three hours to demolish the town into rubble. On that particular day it happened to be a market day, so people from all around the town were in the town square. " 'Every Monday was a fair in Guernica,' says José Monasterio, eyewitness to the bombing. 'They attacked when there were a lot of people there. And they knew when their bombing would kill the most. When there are more people, more people would die'" (Guernica... bombing of Guernica). Seventy percent of the town was destroyed and about 1,600 civilians were killed or wounded. • 6. Guernica Picasso Analysis Pablo Picasso's painting, "Guernica", uses the elements of color, lines, composition, shape, and size to assert the message: how life during World War II lead to the ruin of human emotions. The message of this painting is intriguing and engages the audience's attention. The logic of this painting is brought about in Picasso's idea of portraying the corrupt way of living during World War II, a war that changed history. Emotions clearly exposed in the painting encircle around depression, worry, and with glimmers of hope. These emotions may even be displayed as a result of the ethnicity belonging to the person; a family member fighting in the war. Picasso began this piece in the month of May, in the year of 1937, around the time of World War II and the Spanish Civil War. He had heard about the bombing in Guernica, Spain, his home country, and felt the need to portray his thoughts. Hitler had taken part in this bombing to test Germany's new military weapons. This painting was made to bring people's attention to the way war affects everyone. • 7. The Two Fridas Picasso Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century and co–founder of the Cubist movement, was a participant in Europe's political discourse during most of the early 1900s. Picasso's Guernica, one of his most powerful political statements, was painted as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Guernica, a mural–size canvas painted in blue, black, and white oil, shows tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. Picasso depicts turmoil, people and animals suffering, with building in disarray torn apart by violence and mayhem. With Guernica, Picasso establishes his identity and his strength as an artist when confronted with political authority and intolerable violence, especially in his native land. Frida Kahlo, an European–influenced painter, painted many elements of Mexican culture including folkloric images and the Tehuana costume – which is depicted in The Two Fridas. She also wore the Tehuana herself to demonstrate the cultural independence of Mexico but also to help her identify with the poor and the peasants during the Mexican Revolution. In a historical sense he encompassed all that is to be a practicing modernist artist and prevailed as one of the most significant artists overall in human history. Picasso's most well renowned painting presents to his audience a graphic reflection of the horrors and brutality of war; Guernica (1937) depicts the Spanish town of the same name being torn apart by the explosive fury that was the German air raid on the innocent and unaware village during the Spanish Civil War. Through his training he became proficient in countless fields but was predominately a painter and famously explored the Cubist movement. Cubism was an art movement developed in the early 20th century that was concerned with the dissembling of images and their analytical or synthetic reconstruction, as well as the refinement of detail and emphasis on bold shape. Picasso found artists such as Delacroix, Cezanne and Manet extremely influential, as well as his artistic father, Jose Blasco. Through his challenging of convention to his persistent experimentation of concepts he created some of the greatest artworks of the 20th century, such as The Old Guitarist, 1903, Les Demoiselles d' Avignon, 1907 and his most well–known piece Guernica, 1937. The audiences of Guernica, 1937 are presented with a chilling message of the terrors of war and its traumatic impact on humanity; this is the understood function of Picasso's iconic painting, to evoke emotional response and educate the public of the event. Picasso wished to express his anti–war message to the people, and what more of an opportunity would he have then being commissioned earlier that year to create an artwork for the 1937 World's Fair, Paris. • 11. Literary Analysis Of Pablo Picasso's Guernica Julius Byla Hake English 101 10/22/17 Picasso's Guernica Throughout time paintings have been used to record events, communicate ideas or evoke an emotional response. Pablo Picasso's painting Guernica does just this. Guernica was created to bring attention to the Nazi bombing of the town of Guernica, Spain during the Spanish civil war in the second half of the 1930s. Its exhibition was used to provide relief and a call against the horrors of war. Through its visual elements and symbolic concepts, Guernica depicts the chaos and aftermath of the bombing of the city and the need to bring about change over the tragedies of war. Standing at a massive seven feet by twenty–five feet, this black and white painting depicts a massacre of the bombing of the town of Guernica. The composition of the work is a dimly lit space, the only light coming from an eye shaped light at center top of the painting and a woman holding a lantern next to it. From left to right, the scene contains a screaming bull beneath it a woman holding a dead child. In the center there is a mangled horse pierced by spear and below it, the mangled body of a fallen soldier. To the right are three women, one crawling towards the light, above her is a woman leaning out of a window holding a lit lantern and the other screaming while falling from a burning building. Guernica captures the brutal chaos of the bombing with its physical action and intended symbolism. Being black and white, the painting represents the somber ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Pablo Picasso's Guernic Close Visual Analysis Utilising, "The Study Diamond: effects, techniques, context and meaning" (The Open University, 2013, p. 76), this essay will argue through close visual analysis from an art history point of view that Picasso's Guernica is a form of protest. The essay will also argue that Guernica's meaning has changed to include becoming a symbol of peace and continues to fulfil its purpose as a form of protest. A large mural, Guernica is an example of Synthetic Cubism painted by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973). Created using the medium of oil paint on canvas with a narrow palette consisting of the neutral hues: white, grey and black; the formalist qualities of Guernica can have harrowing effects on the spectator, "But to see it in real life, in its full size, is an even stronger emotional experience. Some people have said they experienced an instant rush of many powerful, fearful emotions" (The Open University, 2016, Block 3, 2.2.2). Stark colour value distribution in Guernica's figures creates the effect of palpable tension. Correspondingly, light grey contrasts with a dark grey or black background. A feature of Synthetic Cubism, "There ... colours are muted, often virtually monochromatic greys or browns." Clarke (cited in The Open University, 2016, Block 3, 2.2.4). The doorway at the centre of Guernica depicts a figure carrying a lamp illuminating a scene of carnage within. This distinct contrast of colour enhances the effect of Guernica's dark corners and can evoke feelings of impending doom. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was that attack, perpetrated by the German Luftwaffe, that inspired him. Guernica, however, is not a complete depiction of that event. But again, the strong right to left movement arises from the direction in which the subjects are looking. Guernica is monochromatic to make its imagery more powerful. Lack of color keeps the viewer focused on the subject matter at hand, as well as keeping the mural cold, which agrees with its general theme of injustice in war. Also, Picasso's flat imagery does not distract the viewer from concentrating on imagery. The viewer is given no other choice than to concentrate on the subject matter of Guernica and ponder it's meaning. The flat, grayscale images generalize the imagery and contribute to the general theme of unnecessary suffering and tragedy. At the extreme right of Picasso's mural, a woman is falling from a burning building. Flames appear to be spewing from the top of that building. Many might say that we acquire knowledge through experience which is true however, a combination of stories and facts play a major role in gaining knowledge. A fact is a statement that is true and can be proven through experimentation. Stories on the other hand are accounts of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment. One area of knowledge which mainly consists of facts but takes the form of stories too is the natural sciences which have been used throughout the years to understand the history of the natural world better. As time progressed those images became more and more demanding of the viewer until they were meant to invoke a physical response. Perhaps the earliest account of such emotionally exact artwork is the 1818 piece, Raft of the Medusa, by Theodore Gericault. As time progressed people became more politically aware and involved and generations of art portrayed this. Pablo Picasso's Guernica, created in 1937, is a great example of how modern times soon saw a peak in the occurrence of allegorical and politically packed artworks. While Gericault's, Raft of the Medusa was essentially criticized for its lack of direct criticism of the event and more a display of the human element, it is this feature that made it characteristically romantic. Gericault took the national scandal out of the papers and turned it into a personal event for each of the passengers. Rather than depict the weltering bodies of the crew, he gave them more muscular frames in vigorous poses. Originally setting out to portray the event as nothing more than a visual truth, he shifted his focus to portray a greater truth of suffering. The suffering is reflected in the face of every passenger and it is the main focus of the piece than any other element. The Raft's theme of human suffering evoked empathy and compassion, which helped project the image beyond any hopes the artist could have held for the piece. This predominant focus on the human condition allowed a stereotypical Romantic piece. Another artist famous for highlighting the human condition was Spanish–born, Pablo Picasso. It displays a sign of relevance in the use of art to communicate serious matters and helpful ideas. Most people may view artwork as things for entertainment; some have been quoted to say artists are crazy, somewhat lazy. It should be appreciated and understood clearly that the artists are people of sound mind who sees things in the environment and chose to articulate critical human issues using their creativity. Picasso; the artist, seemed to be bound by many challenges in his life, just like any other person. He was tortured by the brutal civil wars that were in his motherland (Spain). The political wrangles went overboard and transformed into brutal killings. The forces from the Republicans that were loyal to the ruling new government went embattled by the fascist coup that was organized by General Franco. Contrary to his promises of stability and prosperity in Spain, Franco delivered abundant destructions and deaths. Guernica is thus important work at the time when it was created. • 22. Van Gogh Motives As humans have changed and progressed throughout history, so has their art– from cave paintings to Greek sculptures to the incredible realism of the Renaissance. In addition, throughout history art has been questioned– why did the artist make this? What are they trying to convey? What is the purpose, the symbol, the reason? Every artist has a motive for creating, and it may be as honorable as challenging a social injustice, or as mundane as a commission. The three most universal motives for making art are for beauty, for money on commission, and to convey a message about the artist's thoughts or emotions on a subject. Each of these motives can be influential, however conveying a concept through art is the most powerful, as it has the ability to change the way society operates. It is often said that art is meant to be beautiful for the audience. Artists follow this idea by making and being inspired by beautiful objects such as nature or other people. One artist who displays this is Vincent Van Gogh. Many of Van Gogh's paintings are based on the things around him, including flowers, stars, or people. It is known that he was not on commission, as he only sold one painting in his life. • 24. Analysis Of Pablo Picasso's Guernica In June of 1937, Pablo Picasso completed what some consider to be one of the most influential pieces of artwork ever created, Guernica. The piece was commissioned by the Spanish Republican government for an international exhibition in Paris. Originally Picasso had a completely different subject in mind, but on April 26, the revered Spanish town of Guernica became the first occupied civilian center decimated by carpet bombs. The complete and total destruction of the ancient and honored Spanish town ordered by fascist Francisco Franco and carried out by Nazi German allies outraged Picasso and was the inspiration for this work. Picasso's Guernica is internationally known as a symbol for the destruction of war and it had such immense significance during the Spanish Civil War as it does now because of the form, composition, and content. The canvas in which Guernica is painted on was a large undertaking for Picasso, in fact, it was so enormous that Picasso had to find a larger studio. At 11.5 feet tall and 25.5 feet wide, he had to and use a ladder in order to paint parts of it. Using shades of grey, black, and white oil paint along with textural elements, he created the masterpiece we know today. Aspects of the composition are influenced by Picasso's cubist style, this can be seen by his use of multiple viewpoints and shifting perspective in the piece creating a unique visual experience for the viewer (Arnheim 51). He was inspired by the experimental bombing of Guernica in Spain by the Germans during the Spanish Civil War. The Reina Sofia National Art Museum is the current home of this famous anti–war painting. Figure 1: Image from Reina Sofia National Art Museum Pablo Picasso's painting is one of the most famous war paintings in history and a perfect artistic response to war, because it depicts how all wars cause senseless acts of cruelty, overwhelming sadness and despair of loss, and confusion of the lives amongst the chaos. As the characters fling their heads back, their mouths are open upward towards heaven as if they are crying out to God. • 29. Picasso 's World War II Picasso's World War II Revolutionary Painting Right from the brink of World War II in 1939, an abundant amount of distinguished artwork was created in response to the events that took place before, during, and after the War. There is one painting in particular that I am referring to. This painting is none other than, famous artist, Pablo Picasso's painting of Guernica. Guernica is a famous piece of artwork created in 1937. It depicts the bombings of a Basque Country village in northern Spain by German and Italian warplanes during the Spanish Civil War. The attack was unsuspected and unavoidable. Nearly three–quarters of the people's homes were demolished and a large number of their population perished. In the following paragraphs, I would like to talk briefly about Guernica in the sense of its content and historical context that pertain to World War II. In the painting known as Guernica, Picasso portrays a scene of endless violence, suffering, and of course death. When one looks at the painting of Guernica as a whole, one can see that there is a lot of conflict going on all at once in this painting. When breaking it down, first one might notice that in the top left hand corner of the painting there is a bull. The bull is a symbol for the Spanish rituals of bullfighting which than pertains to the nature of death from how all these bulls are killed in these fights to the death. Next, one can depict in the bottom left corner of the painting, a figure who is lying face up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Guernica: Investigating the Impact Essay In times of crisis and public upheaval, artistic representations emerge as both a way of remembering an event historically and as a means to interpret and overcome the past. This response is universal, and in the case of Picasso's Guernica, the emotional, social, and political impact it had and continues to have on people perpetuates its complex universality. Guernica became a symbol of pride to the Republican supporters and a force to be reckoned with for General Franco and the Nationalists. The painting's overwhelming response from both sides aided in the call for European and international awareness of the Spanish Civil War and reflected a horrified outrage towards immoral bloodshed – an emotion so familiar throughout the world that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an effort to break the morale and cause panic among his opposition, Franco sanctioned the aerial bombardment of Guernica, a historically significant Basque town, by his German and Italian allies. The date was April 26, 1937, and after the bombing finished Guernica was left in shambles with many of its citizens killed and the rest fleeing out of fear. This strategy of attacking civilian centers was a preamble to what would be experienced during WWII. Pablo Picasso, an already famous Spanish painter and expatriate, was living in Paris at the time of the incident. The mixture of anger and grief he felt translated into the artistic Republican protest we know as Guernica. Picasso unveiled his representation during the 1937 Paris International Exhibition (or World's Fair) only weeks after the event occurred. The fair was meant to be a celebration of modern technology, but the work exhibited in the Spanish Pavilion by Picasso and other Spanish artists was adverse to this intent. Although the Spanish Pavilion opened late in the Fair (and therefore lost a lot of its potential publicity and initial effectiveness), the people who entered were disillusioned by what they saw. Guernica, which many had preconceived notions of already, received mixed reviews: some were overly critical and equated Picasso's work to that of a child's, others reacted in the same way they did to his other works – with confusion and a misunderstanding of the surrealist and cubist style. To a non–art student the visual at first glance is very important to set the tone of the paintings. This helps the viewer understand the groundwork of the subject matter. Picasso's Guernica is very representational but I can also see so abstract aspects in a weird way. Goya's Third of May is naturalistic and representational but unlike Guernica we can clearly see the people who are in charge causing the struggle. In both paintings the value of the light plays important role in the paintings. Picasso uses shades of black and white to show all the different aspects and the painting. Goya uses the value of the light to direct our attention to the main events in the painting. The lines in Guernica is more curvy, where as Goya's third of May has more straight lines which effects the flow of the painting. In both of the paintings the background of the paintings are very similar. People, places, animals and things are being destroyed because of ruling issues. In Goya's painting to can see hopelessness and suffering on the man's face while begging for his life. Both of the paintings we can feel the senseless violence that was depicted. Critical Analysis Of Guernica Name: Raymonde Weyzen Assignment: Research Paper Course: Visual Methodologies Supervisor: Alena Alexandrova Date: 18 December 2014 Picasso's Guernica: An analysis based on the methodologies provided by Panofsky and Barthes In January 1937, Pablo Picasso accepted the commission for a 25 foot long mural for the Spanish pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (Borja–Villel et al., 2010). This exposition was a creation of the Spanish Government in exile, at the time of the Civil War. Therefore it was imbued with political and diplomatic meanings and served as propaganda for the Republican Government (Borja–Villel et al., 2010). The subject matter of the painting is the attack on the Basque town of Guernica by German planes (Borja–Villel et al., 2010). However, this event per se is not what is highlighted in the painting. Picasso used this scene to demonstrate his personal rejection of war and, taking this further, to demonstrate to the world the costly struggle by the Spanish people in search for freedom (Borja–Villel et al., 2010; Corbin, 1999). As a result, Guernica became to be a worldwide icon for political protest (Kopper, 2014). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This brings to mind the saying "The grass is always greener on the other side" This helps to show how the members of the public see this part of London as a desired thing and that everything is better, but this saying usually ends up being false; these people still live in the same world, it is all an illusion, Further on in the scene Theo says to his cousin Nigel, "A hundred years from now, there won't be one single sad f**k to look at any of this (meaning his apartment). What keeps you going?" To which Nigel replies "You know what it is, Theo? I just don't think about it". He is just ignoring the inevitable. Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso used their artistic talents to record these events. There are many differences within these two artworks. However, there are also many similarities, even though these artworks were constructed in two different centuries. Francisco de Goya has painted an image to show a time of tragedy. The majority of the painting is in dark earth tones, however, he used whites, yellows, and reds to highlight important features in the work. The executions occurred during the invasion of Spain by Napoleon and his troops in 1808. This particular event took a toll on Goya because he was a Spaniard himself. This is an image of actual events that occurred on the hill of Principe Pio and the battle at Medina del Rio. Goya's strategy was to use psychological forces to direct not only our eyes but also our sympathy to the painting. He gains our sympathy by using the faces of the rebels as focal points in the painting. He painted the soldiers and their rifles in a way to create direction that forces the viewers to focus on the rebel with his hands flung out in a gesture of crucifixion. He also painted this rebel with a bright white shirt and clean pants. The rebel's face shows grief and anguish, but his arms are in the shape of a v which may represent amity. Artwork Analysis Report Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. His full name is Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso; a very long name representing a variety of relatives. Picasso's mother was Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez. His father was Don José Ruiz Blasco, a painter and art teacher. According to Biography (2017), "A serious and prematurely world–weary child, the young Picasso possessed a pair of piercing, watchful black eyes that seemed to mark him destined for greatness...when I was a child, my mother said to me, if you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk you'll end up as the pope, Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso". Picasso was a poor student but he displayed an extraordinary talent for drawing at a very young age. According to Biography (2017), "Picasso's father began teaching him to draw and paint when he was a child, and by the time he was 13 years old, his skill level had surpassed his father's". Soon, Picasso lost interest to do any schoolwork and he chose to draw instead. Picasso stated in Biography (2017), "For being a bad student, I was banished to the 'calaboose,' a bare cell with whitewashed walls and a bench to sit on," he later remembered. "I liked it there, because I took along a sketch pad and drew incessantly... I could have stayed there forever, drawing without stopping"(Picasso 2017). • 36. Pablo Picasso Guernica Essay In 1936, the Spanish Republican government asked Pablo Picasso, the popular Spanish painter, to create a piece for the Paris World's Fair in 1937. Picasso created the painting "Guernica" with an underlying political theme that outlined the recent events of the Spanish Civil War, in which he never explicitly painted for social/civic interests prior to "Guernica". The celebration of the Paris World Fair was aimed for technological expansion, but the painting didn't follow the same aspirations as the exposition. The painting lies at its overwhelming size of 11.5 feet tall by 25.5 feet wide. Some viewers describe the paintings emotional intensity derives from the vast capacity, causing the feeling that it submerges the viewer in the devastating depictions and illustrations of war. Having similarities to the vastness of European paintings of the time, "Guernica" also contrasts and expresses a different message of most artworks created in the era by opposing the desire for war, instead of elevating nationalistic ideals and wanting the victory of war. The city in which the painting describes exists in the North of Spain, primarily in the Basque country. Nationalist advocates for the Spanish Civil War describe Guernica as the center for culture for the Basque country. Spain was controlled by Francisco Franco, a friend of Hitler. Picasso was born in Spain and was devastated to see it be ruled by a fascist who has taken over the country. Hitler, preparing for a world war, was making new weapons and asked Franco if he could test them on a spanish city. On April 26, 1937, the German Condor Legion bombed the city of Guernica in Northern Spain, all with the permission of Franco. The bombing killed over a thousand people and left the world shocked. Picasso's oil painting on canvas captures both the reactions of the public and the pain of the innocent civilians who died. Guernica was originally panned by critics in the world.
