Guernica Comparison
The painting "Guernica," by Pablo Picasso, and the painting "Executions of the Third of May," by
Francisco de Goya, were are both centered around the same general theme. There are several
similarities between the two pieces regarding content and meaning. In addition to the similarities of
these two pieces, there are also some differences regarding the artists, the creation process of the
pieces, and the technical aspects that make up the paintings. Similarities and differences can be
identified in these two pieces by analyzing the historical, political, social, cultural, religious,
stylistic, and technical aspects of both the form and content of the two works of art. In 1937, Pablo
Picasso created one of the most famous paintings of the 20th ... Show more content on

General Franco accepted aid from currently fascist governments, such as those of Hitler and
Mussolini, in exchange for the allowance of Hitler's Nazis to practice their aerial warfare against the
inhabitants of Guernica. On April 28, 1937, the German Nazis air bombed the town of Guernica,
which is the old Basque capital in Spain. As a result, the civilians of Guernica were left with a
destroyed town and the massacre of numerous inhabitants. At the time of this event, Picasso was
working in Paris and was commissioned by his government to paint a mural for the Spanish Pavilion
of the Paris World's Fair. "Guernica" was completed in a short time following the bombing of
Guernica. Picasso did not allow "Guernica" to be displayed in Spain while General Franco was in
power, which led to the portrayal of the painting at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After
General Franco was stripped of his power, the painting made its way back to Spain to be displayed
in Madrid, the Spanish capital. The Basque Nationalist Movement, who favors the Basque territories
cession from Spain, claims that "Guernica" has been stolen from them. Similarly, "Executions of the

19th Century Photography Research Paper
The Influence Of Realism In 19th Century Photography
Through research of 19th century photography and Realism this paper will set out to prove that the
realism movement helped influence photography. It will do this by going in to detail what Realism
is, how 19th century photography worked, and how they are similar and different. This will be show
further with an example of both a painting during the Realism movement as well and a 19th century
photography to explain in more details what each of these things are. This paper will establish a
strong case for how Realism had an influence on photography.
Realism is a tricky art form. And it is less of a style than a commitment to paint the modern world

The artist of this painting, Gustave Courbet, was one of the first artist to call himself a "Realist"
(1819–1877). This painting is a picture of a young man and an old man crushing rocks to produce
the gravel used for the roadbeds. These stonebreakers represent the disenfranchised lower class on
whose backs the modern life was being built upon. The young man in the painting is struggling to
move the large basket of rocks to the side of the road. He is wearing a ripped shirt and pants, but his
working boots are more modern. The older gentleman, is knelt down, tired from the work. He is
breaking the rocks, while wearing the outfit of a lower class man. What the older man was wearing
is the more traditional style of a peasant with his wooden shoes. The younger man is almost
representing a grim of the future, while the older man shows a more out of date, or the rural past.
Courbet said when talking about his inspiration for this painting is that "One side is a an old man
seventy... On the other side is a young fellow... In labor such as this, one's life begins that way, and it
ends the same way." (Stokstad 973) Courbet does a great job of signifying the brutality of the
modern life with his choices of dull, and dark colors, as well as a more rough painting patters, he
uses awkward poses and stilted composition. The painting seem realistically gloomy and

Saturn Devouring His Son
Saturn Devouring His Son
Saturn Devouring His Son is a name given to a mural painting painted by Francisco Jose de Goya y
Lucientes during year 1820 to 1823 at his house Quinta del Sordo (Villa of The Deaf Man) which is
located at Spain. He used al secco technique (also called fresco–secco) which means the color
pigments are mixed with water and egg york and applied on the moistened plaster. This painting was
painted in oils on one of the wall of his dining room. Goya showed Saturn crouched in the centre of
the painting with expanded face, bulging eyes and widely opened mouth which he was consuming a
smaller human figure with his fists had clenched into it. A headless cadaver is also painted in the
back side view which only has a left ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His sixth child Jupiter (Zeus) survived because his wife, Ops (Rhea) tricked on him. Jupiter later
overthrew Saturn and saved all his five brothers and sisters which still survived inside their father's
stomach.
Goya might inspired by Peter Paul Rubens who also previously painted a Saturn Devouring His Son
on 1636. But Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son is different with Rubens's. Rubens's Saturn was
painted less cannibalistic whereas Goya's Saturn is more cannibal as he emphasized on Saturn's
expression.
However, Wright (1993, p.51) had written that Rubens's is more horrific as viewer's sympathy is
straight drop on the innocent baby yet to be eaten. There is also another difference spotted. Rubens's
painted an innocent child whereas Goya painted a cadaver that looked like a younger adult. In
Goya's painting, the cadaver was in long legged, round buttocks and wide hips. The gender of the
young adult is remained unknown as there is headless and not facing to us. But some experts
suggested that the cadaver was a female young adult due to Goya's later love life.
Emotionalism aspect also can be seen in this painting. The public is curious why Goya painted
Saturn. Some historians suggested that this is related to Goya's son, Javier. Goya and his wife,
Josefa, had plenty of children but only Javier

Picasso Mother
Pablo Picasso's The Mother, 1901, is an oil painting on cardboard mounted on panel. The painting
depicts the scene of a mother carrying a toddler with one hand, and holding her child in the other
hand. These three figures are in the foreground, and behind them, we can see slight landscape of
houses, a hill, and the sky. Although Picasso depicts the simple subject of the mother and her two
children, he represents the mom's exhausting and rough life through dull composition, faded and
blue color, and rough style. Picasso creates a still composition of figures, and conveys heaviness and
roughness in the painting. Among the group of the mother and children, the mom is the biggest
subject in the painting. He slightly tilts her to the direction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The reproduction is largely compared to the original work especially in the color and texture. Most
noticeable difference is first in color. In the painting, Picasso intentionally uses dull and cold colors
and creates the rough mood. Particularly, he uniquely paints blue shades in the mother's profile,
expressing her tiredness and depression. However, in the reproduction, most colors are whitened.
The faded gray in the sky and even dull blue in the mother are all shown as white in the postcard.
While whitening out the subtle cold shades in the original work, it creates more contrast in color.
The light colors are brightened, almost whitened, and dark colors, such as black in outlines or the
mother's cloth, are far more darkened. The color contrast becomes more obvious and clear in the

How To Write A Rhetorical Analysis Of A Snowstorm
This painting is about a lower–class family that is going through a snowstorm in the middle of the
winter to survive instead of just staying inside the warm house. This painting is called the
snowstorm and was painted by Francisco Goya to illustrate a lighter but still hard time in life. This
painting is about a family out in a snowstorm and illustrates a lot about the character of the family
with the hardships that they went through, along with the desperation and willpower to survive.
While the family is out in the middle of the snowstorm they have many hardships to deal with. The
family is all grouped together in the middle of the painting with their jackets wrapped around them
and their heads facing down to keep warm with snow in every direction of them as if they don't want
to travel. This shows that the family is cold and, yet they have to face the hardship of the winter. The
tree next to the family is severely swayed to the right the branch in front of the family was broken
off from the tree and laying on the ground showing how hard it was to face the cold and wind of the
storm. A dog is in front of the family at attention on all four feet with the dog's paw prints trailing
the dog showing that the family is moving in the direction away from the prints. There is a dead pig
draped across and the back of a mule and tied down to it, along with a man on the left side has a gun
in between his arms tucked into his body as if he is the one who hunts the food for the family.

Campbell's Soup Cans Analysis
Campbell's Soup Cans presents thirty–two duplicate paintings of different flavored Campbell soup
cans. All of the paintings were painted on white canvas and displayed in rows as if, "resting on a
shelf like groceries in a store" (MoMA). Each piece is nearly identical to the first with the main
difference being that each name of the soup's flavor is different, two specific soup cans with a
ribbon across the seal stating, "NEW, GREAT AS A SAUCE, TOO", and another with the words
"Old–fashioned" above the flavor label. Each can has a black outlines and details, red upper half,
brown centered seal, while lower half, read flavor name, black and gold "SOUP", gold printed
patterns, and a single red line. The MoMA states, "Warhole assigned a different

Union University Art Gallery Analysis
Union University Art Gallery plays host to several different artists' galleries throughout the year, for
free and open to the public. Currently on display is "Hodgepodge", a collection of about ten
canvases by Brian Bundren. While Bundren has been painting and displaying his artwork for quite
some time (his first gallery was in the mid–1990s!), "Hodgepodge" contains paintings only from
2013–2016. All of the artwork shows great precision and attention to detail. The colors are vibrant
and rich. That is not to say the colors were bright or cheerful (only one painting was particularly
"bright"), but the colors were all pure and distinct. Most of the paintings, in my opinion, would fit
under the umbrella of surrealism. Walking into the gallery immediately starts to produce feelings of
unease and perhaps feelings of being threatened. The individual objects in the paintings are very
realistic but mashed together in unnatural ways. Only one painting, "J.V.'s Thunderbird", felt "calm";
it did not cause me to personally feel discomfort, even though it was not peaceful. It was a large
canvas displaying an underwater scene in bright blue. A Thunderbird was half–visible along the
bottom edge of the canvas. A deep sea diver was present, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There is a muzzle, open and snarling, behind a few peonies. At first glance, it appears to be the
muzzle of a dog, but careful inspection of the shape of the nostrils, mandible, and placement of what
appears to be the eyes, it looks more to be a baboon, one of the great ape family. Pink peonies (there
are two in full bloom and one bud) commonly represents love and honor, while white peonies (there
is one at the bottom) represents shyness or bashfulness. For me, this painting shows that for every
good thing there is in the world, there is the "other" behind it: an oft uncontrollable, primal force
that is hidden beneath the

A Portrait of a Young Man Essay
A Portrait of a Young Man.
Portrait of a Young Man was painted by Angolo Bronzino between the years of 1503–1572. The
portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches and is an oil on wood( Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1999). I
picked this painting because of the self assurance, at first glance, of the young man that is depicted.
This appealed to me because it reflected my own attitude.
After studying the portrait for a considerable amount of time I began to see possible sadness or self–
doubt in the young mans face that betrays his powerful stance. I felt a connection to the young man,
knowing all too well what it was like to present a powerful outside image while knowing there was a
self conscious and scared person inside. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An Artistic Evaluation head worked into the side. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
monster heads that are found on the furniture and on the folds of the young mans clothing, which I
was unable to locate, allude to literary references that would have been appreciated by the artist's
friends. In the background there is a green colored room, that includes a door frame, a Doric column
and a capital.
Portrait of a Young Man was painted during the Mannerism period. It was done by Bronzino in Italy
c.1540. The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches, it's vertical because it's a portrait. The frame cuts the
shapes in the painting, this was done purposely in the typical Mannerism style which usually
crowded the pictorial area . The painting is supported by wood, opaque oil paints were applied
thickly with a fine brush, I was unable to see any distinct brush strokes. The forms are flat except for
the beads on the young man's hat which seem to raise off the painting.
The portrait contains a simple organization. There are few individual units like the chair and table
but the picture is crowded. The shapes are regular and complete with clear defining lines. The
painting is geometrically ordered, the chair and table appear to support and reinforce the pose of the
young man.The palette the artist used is subdued,

Challenging Society Through Art.
Challenging Society Through Art
Art makes a statement, it is as simple as that. The most preferred type of art emotes happiness to the
viewer throughout all of history. Yet, throughout the years, artists have come to challenge society's
preference of art. Artists like Gustave Courbet, Francisco Goya, and Ai Weiwei, who decided to take
the challenge and start a new progression. Social critique through art is blatantly shown throughout
each of their pieces: Stonebreakers, The Third of May 1808, and Sunflower Seeds. All three are
similar yet different. Through comparison, a similar theme still remains present: Each artist 's social
critique through their artwork. These particular types of artwork will show how one moment in
history changed the view of millions throughout centuries of time. With the use of symbolism,
positioning of figures, historical context, color usage, and many other elements, these three works of
art make an inspiring statement to the world.
The first painting, Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet depicts two males that go to work breaking
stone and wearing torn and tattered clothing. This job was usually done by the lower classes of
society. At this time in France there was a rising of revolutionary thinking. The reason for the
sudden outbreak involved many factors, the ones portrayed in this painting are the demands of the
working classes. The figures are not arranged in the typical way. Both the young and the old males
are turned away from the viewer.

Essay about SUMMERTIME AND SPRING RAIN
SUMMERTIME AND SPRING RAIN
Upon first sight, it appears that John Sloan's Spring Rain and Edward Hopper's Summertime only
common characteristic is that they are both oil paintings on canvas. Spring Rain, from the school of
Impressionistic art, was painted in 1912. Summertime, which possesses a simplified, schematic
style, was created over thirty years later, in 1943. Therefore, there are extreme differences in the two
artists' technique and style. However, despite these differences, the two painters' works embody the
same theme: They are both scenes of urban realism characterized by isolation and loneliness. John
Sloan's painting depicts a dismal view of municipal life. The painting's gloominess is achieved most
effectively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pale yellow can be detected in the window shades, in the floor on the staircase and in the woman's
hat. In order to contrast the yellow, Hopper uses a very light, whitish blue in the curtains and in the
woman's dress. The fact that the woman's dress is white, with a hint of blue, suggests that the
woman is almost, but not quite pure.
Another compositional style that creates despondency in the paintings is Sloan and Hopper's line
usage. Hopper uses strong verticals, horizontals, and diagonals. These lines form simple, large
geometric forms. This preciseness gives the architecture a sense of depth and perspective. There is
also a stark play of light and shadow in the architecture of the building. All of these elements make
the building's architecture extremely realistic.
In contrast, John Sloan heavily uses curvy, S–shaped lines in Spring Rain, for example, in the trees
and in the shape of the woman's body. The path of the top lines on the park benches gives the
painting perspective, drawing the viewer's eye to the background. The background of the painting
uses the technique of pointillism, the specific arrangement of paint splotches. This technique also
helps to give the painting texture in the tree branches and leaves.
Even though both painters use different line styles, both styles trigger similar emotional effects in
the viewer. For example, Sloan's contoured lines give the painting a sense

His painting Souvenir 1 creates a sort of memorial with historical figures such as JFK and MLK on
the walls of an old but fancy house. The house appears as a historically white person type home that
slaves and black people would typically serve in. The room painted in the picture as a light energy to
it with the use of white and light colors contrasted by the black subject with gold glitter wings. The
gold glitter wings symbolize the freedom blacks earned because of the death of the historical figures
represented in the figures subtly. Because of the historical figures in the painting, laws were passed
and people were inspired. However, historically, just because laws were passed and people were
inspired, didn't mean automatic change, it didn't mean complete freedom. That's what this painting
represents, freedom at a grasp. The black people received their wings( the laws, the courage, the
platform) to fly due to the deaths of many represented and unrepresented figures, but did they fly,
can they fly? Another piece that stood out with its Adam and Eve type mimicry is the painting

Visual Analysis Essay On Bridget Riley
There is a single gallery exhibition showing at the Art Institute of Chicago, presenting Bridget
Riley's works. Gallery 294 is exhibiting three paintings and one installation in all. Riley is a British
artist who dominantly engaged in a short–lived art movement called Op Art in 1960s and since then
she developed her works from abstract black and white paintings to colorful stripe paintings. Riley
inherited the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. She used simple geometric shapes in her paintings
and arouses viewers' complicated sensations but also provides viewers' virtually optical experiences.
In Bridget Riley's works, an illusion of movement (and of volume) is engendered by the
destabilization of a regular pattern and the continually confusing inversion of figure and ground.
(Foster, 418) It is very explicit in Ascending and Descending Hero, which occupies the most
conspicuous position in the gallery. The overall painting is symmetrically constituted by different
sized black triangles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the opposite wall of the Ascending and Descending Hero, Horizontal Vibration is extremely
simple in its visual aspects. Riley painted many black horizontal lines in different thicknesses. When
the viewer backs two steps away then the viewer can actual feels the vibration from these horizontal
lines. Red Modulation (Yellow and Orange) is in between the Ascending and Descending Hero and
Horizontal Vibration. Riley repeated warm color horizontal lines in the same thickness. It does not
only create a pattern, but also hides several vertical lines when the viewer steps back to the middle
of the gallery. Some pink vertical lines are dancing in the repetitive stripes. Both of the pieces offer
viewers a virtual optical experience. Walking slowly into the installation Continuum, Riley built a
hypnotic space for viewers by painting monochromatic geometric shapes

The De Goya Y Lucientes
He is considered the most important artist in Spain during the late 18th and early 19th century and
was one of the most prominent and successful painters in Europe. Francisco Jose de Goya y
Lucientes was a romantic painter and printmaker whose style changed drastically throughout his
life; he is considered the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. His style fits into the
category of Romanticism, which is most apparent in his paintings of the Spanish Royal family after
becoming First Painter to the King of Spain in 1786. Six years later, he suffered an awful illness
which ultimately left him deaf and shaped his future work. After Napoleon Bonaparte rose to
prominence during the French Revolution, Spain was invaded due to its political and strategic
importance to the French. Goya was able to capture the horrors he saw in his anti–war works
produced in paintings and with intaglio prints which he didn't make public. The throne of Spain was
taken by Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon 's brother, who was backed by a large French military force.
After the political situation in Spain normalized and rule was returned to it's rightful heir, Goya
returned to painting commissioned portraits. With ailing health, he moved to a country home where
he completed the haunting Black Paintings which were painted directly to his walls. Due to his
health, he received permission from King Ferdinand IV for an indefinite leave of absence and
relocates to Paris. He completes a small number of

Analysis Of'saturn His Son, At The Museum Of El Prado...
I first saw this painting, Saturn Devouring His Son, at the Museum of El Prado alongside the other
Black Paintings. My initial reaction was of fear. These are artworks that should not be simply seen
in front of a computer screen. The thickness of the paint and the careful attention to details; these are
things that are missed if not seen in person. Upon walking into the small room the first painting that
draws the attention of visitors is this painting. Not only is this a grotesque piece in an otherwise
frightening room, Saturn also looks like he's rather enjoying this action, and his intense glare from
his bulging eyes gives the impression as if you (the viewer) are the next target. The goal for this
essay is to show Goya's way of depicting events that have affected not only society but him
personally.
It is a mythological subject that literally shows Saturn devouring his son. Light is very important as
it focuses directly on the face of Saturn and the body of his son. It is a blinding light that leaves the
dark background with a feeling of gloominess. The composition revolves around a single plane in
which Saturn is placed devouring his victim. The dark background marks the sense of depth. Violent
motion appreciates both his posture, and his mouth. His face reflects an expression of drama and
tenebrism. The predominant color on the drawing emphasizes the dark tones that contrast with the
clarity of the body of the victim. His deformity produces more drama in the scene.

Civil War Visual Analysis
The painting was very thought provoking and sprouted many ideas in my head, however, their was
one idea that stood out more than the others. I listed the thoughts below in the bullet points. The
color scheme of this painting was very chaotic. The outside areas were vibrants shades of yellow,
green, and some blue. The inner center section of the painting was dark red with a big blotch of
black covering it. Other students took the hidden shades of colors to stand for the bravery that most
citizens stereotype war with. However, in reality their is only blood stains that cover everything and
war is just an act of foolishness.
From my point of view, the outside colors stood for the different viewpoints that each individual
brings to the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So if you look at the painting in this perspective, you can hypothesize that the red and green
viewpoints have collided making the big black blotch in the center.
So it is concludes that when these varying viewpoints collided you create a massive surge of chaos
and bloodshed.
The other thing interesting about the painting was the setting of the picture. Unlike most paintings
this one was set inside a frame that resembled a barrier. This was very creative and gave the viewer
the sense that all these soldiers are trapped in this vortex of unending bloodshed.
Their was a part of the canvas that seemed to run out of the boundaries of the frame. It was
interesting how the blue line leading away from the scene closely resembled a river.
It felt as if many of the soldier may have tried to escape from this gruesome setting by flowing out
of the picture and maybe forgetting all the memories. However, the experience war gives is rarely
forgotten and this clearly noticeable in the picture because the river does not end up leaving the
frame but comes to a standstill or

Out West Roy De Forest Analysis
Out West by Roy De Forest is a spectacular painting that is defined by its multiple assorted colors,
patterns and textures. Forest described himself by stating the following: "I have always been a
novelistic painter, and even when I was making abstract painting it was like creating a map,
basically, and the map then turns into a landscape and the landscape adds figures...". The artist
modeled this painting after various parts of his own childhood. Each part is a different memory
Forest has from his life creating a unique relationship between the piece and the artist. Most likely,
this piece was significant to Forest because it holds memories from his life; therefore, this work is a
great representation of the unique types of paintings he creates. His pieces are filled with many

Similar to the dogs, the people are not the same colors. After examining this piece, I noticed that the
man with lighter skin color is relaxing while the man with darker skin color is on top of the horse
with a worried expression on his face. The man is looking to the left side of the painting, also where
the third dog discussed is looking. While there is no obvious reason for their eyes being focused in
another direction, the artist created variety to his art by doing so. In addition to the animal's and
people's eyes looking in different directions, their eyes are distinct colors. The dark furred dog as
well as the man with dark skin both have noticeably red eyes. However, each other person or animal
has blue eyes. Although their may be no real significant to this in the artist's perspective, it is an
aspect that was almost immediately noticeable when analyzing this piece at the VMFA. The distinct
colors, patterns and shapes the artist created the animals and people with brings life to the painting
because of the different personalities represented within each

Francisco Goy Deaf Man's Villa
Between the years 1820 and 1823, Francisco Goya casted himself away from society in his farm
house outside of Madrid. In this house, also known as Deaf Man's Villa, Goya painted what is now
known as the Black Paintings. One painting stuck out more than others due to its horrifying
depiction of Saturn Devouring His Son. The name of this painting was not given by Goya himself,
but rather later after his death. Goya painted the painting originally with no intent of showcasing it
to the public. The painting was no ordinary painting since it was painted on the walls of Goya's
estate. Today, the painting currently resides in the Museo del Prado in Madrid where the target
audience is anyone who would like to see the magnificently horrifying piece of work for themselves.
Goya's purpose for this painting was to seek people's attention and stand out, leave a mark or
message, and overall question what that message. Goya is able to successfully fulfill his purpose by

The French Occupation Of Spain During The Peninsular War
Francisco Goya was a Spanish painter and printmaker, especially known for his works depicting and
commenting on the horrors of the French Occupation of Spain during the Peninsular War, in the
early 1800's. 'The Third of May', an oil on canvas painting created in 1814 by Goya, illustrates the
mass executions of innocent Spanish civilians, in response to the uprising of civilians against the
French military the previous day. 'Saturn Devouring his son', another oil on canvas masterpiece by
Goya, depicts the mythological, gruesome figure of the god Saturn, who, based upon the fear of a
prophecy, ate each one of his own children.
'The Third of May' depicts a pitch black sky, looming over crowds of people below, dimly lit by
geometric lanterns nearby. The focus of the scene involves two separate groups – the faceless,
practically identical French military, aiming their guns towards the direction of a group of petrified
civilians, making various different positions. Around the civilians are lifeless bodies, coated in their
own blood. As many of the civilians turn away, one figure is prominent in the centre. The man's
arms are outstretched in a seemingly surrendering manner, as he kneels upon the ground, waiting to
be shot. Unlike the other people, whose clothes are a sea of dark blues, greens and browns, the man
wears bright white and yellow clothing, emphasised through the illuminating light of the lantern
which is cast in his direction. If examined closely, the man also appears

The White Light Painting By Jackson Pollock
When a person looks at a painting everyone will have a different outlook from the painting. The
only one that truly knows what is behind the art piece would be the artist. Artists try to speak
through their art, even when other people might not understand the painting or message. The artist
has specific ways the painting is managed .From the moment the artist comes up with the idea of
what to pain to the moment its being shown. Colors, formality, frame and style help identify some
stuff the artist is trying to point out. Looking at the "White Light" painting , I see a lot of different
colors. One thing that stand out for me is in the back of all the bright colors theirs black. Black is the
main color of the background and then starts getting lighter and eventually ends with majority of
white on top. In between of all the black and white you will see the small amounts of the primary
hues: yellow, red, and blue. The value in the colors in the painting vary. The colors are light and go
up to darks then change back to the lighter side. As I look into the picture and I try to see what type
of composition the painting has. Looking very closely at the picture I lean more into this picture
being in the linear type of composition. The painting by Jackson Pollock has some very different
and particular lines going on the canvas. Some lines on the painting are very thin and long compared
to other that are thick, short, and a certain direction than just straight. The lines not only

Francisco De Goya Black Paintings
Francisco de Goya's Pinturas negras, or Black Paintings, are some of the most grotesque and
unsettling images in art history, with one painting in particular, Saturno devorando a su hijo, or
Saturn Devouring One of His Sons, standing out the most amongst them all. With his wildly staring
eyes, gaping mouth and half–eaten son in his hands, it makes one wonder what would drive an artist
to create an image like this. Goya, however, was not uneducated in the horrors of the world,
witnessing the travesties of the Peninsular War, the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, surviving
two life threatening illnesses, with one leaving him completely deaf, and the death of six of his
seven children. Perhaps it was one of these instances in particular that encouraged him to conceiving
this disconcerting figure, or perhaps it was a combination of the three.
At the beginning of Goya's career, in 1777, he was commissioned to create a series of tapestry
cartoons from the Royal Tapestry Factory, designing some 42 patterns over five years. Some of his
more popular paintings were originally tapestry cartoons such as The Parasol. His use of the popular
Rococo style, brought him to the attention of the aristocracy of Spain. In 1789, he was appointed to
court painter to Charles IV and then the following year, he became First Court Painter. His portraits
of the king, queen and royal family, were anything but flattering. While he was given this great
position of influence and prestige, he

Art Analysis: Gold Marilyn Monroe
When I examine the iconic painting "Gold Marilyn Monroe", I viewed dazzling art elements that
consist of lines, shapes, texture, values, and color. Firstly, the lines within the painting posses thickly
curved, curled, diagonal, and straight lines. The curled lines are prominent on the hair of Marilyn.
Additionally, the thickly curved lines the bring out the facial features can be viewed on Marilyn's
hair, eyebrows, eyes, forehead, and lips. Moreover, the diagonal line can be seen on the sides of
Marilyn's jawline. Also, the straight lines are noticed on the left side of Marilyn's neck, her lower
chin and the framing that encapsulates Monroe's face. Secondly, the shapes of the painting are
organic because Marilyn's face is natural and symmetrical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The theme of the painting is religious and spiritual. Andy Warhol depicted Monroe as a martyr most
notably by the golden brown paint. In death, Marilyn was worshiped and adored all over the world
just like Mary Mother of Jesus. Andy Warhol's purpose for the painting was to pay tribute to the late
Monroe after her death in August 1962. During the production of the painting, Warhol captured
Marilyn Monroe as his muse in various mediums. Warhol began silk screening Monroe's image
numerous times in a grid in radiant colors and in black and white. The "Gold Marilyn Monroe"
painting brought him to the realization that personas could be fabricated and commercialized by the
public. My personal thought on the painting is that Marilyn is shown as a goddess. Marilyn's beauty
and grace are depicted so effortlessly. However, when I am viewing her smile, I feel saddened.
Marilyn's smile seems to hide the pain she felt in life and the inner demons she was struggling

The Black Woman In The Painting
I had the opportunity to customize the painting to make HER look more like myself. And, I
considered it. I thought, I'd have to change HER skin tone to a much lighter shade of brown. I'd have
to straighten HER hair and take out the beautiful bounce of HER curls. I would be changing HER
entire look. I wasn't feelin it. The Black woman in the painting was already so beautiful the way she
was and I just didn't feel moved to change HER. Actually, I related to HER in a very intimate way. I
already knew it wasn't the way she looked that I saw in myself. So I couldn't figure out what it was
about HER that I related to. I mean after all, it's just a painting, I don't actually know HER, Right?
Wrong, I do know HER. She is a part of me. She is an extension of me. She is SOLANA NADINE.
It hit me! The woman in the painting looks like a version of what Solana might look like in 20 years
or so. This was the intimate connection I felt to the "just the painting" woman. According to my
view the woman in the painting is Important & Valued. She is Strong & Confident. She is Smart &
Empowered. She is Kind & is Loved. She is Sweet & Feisty. She is dark skinned with luscious dark
curls. She is at Peace and She is Beautiful.
It was so clear! She is Solana. And because I want to raise Solana to know that she too is ALL OF
THOSE things, I painted HER for HER. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Arthur Lubow Research Paper
In 2003, Arthur Lubow wrote an article in the New York Times titled, The Secret of the Black
Paintings. He believes that Goya's "Black Paintings" were actually painted by someone else. The
"Black Paintings" ornamented the wall of Goya's Quinta del Sordo. Art Historian, Junquera, studied
the "Black Paintings," and, given the evidence, he believes they were actually painted by Goya's
son, Javier. Javier was a businessman, not a painter, so he probably sold his paintings as his fathers
to make extra money. Another clue that they were not painted by Goya is that they are more modern
than his other pieces. The style that they were painted in emerged after Goya's death. No visitors of
Quinta del Sordo reported seeing them. No sad, dark paintings

The Popularity of John Constable's Paintings "Dedhame...
John Constable was a 19th century English Romantic painter. Constable is known best for his
landscape paintings, he believed that his paintings should come right from nature instead of
imagination. He made hundreds of outdoor oil sketches, he was said to be his happiest when
painting places he knew well. His landscapes were usually of the area surrounding his home that he
lived in while growing up. which is now locally referred as "Constable Country". Constable was
influenced by dutch artist, Jacob Van Ruisdael. John's most famous paintings were "Dedhame Vale"
and "The Hay Wain" his realism and vitality make his works very original. John Constable's
paintings are now very popular in British art, however in his life–time they were not very popular in
England, he only found success in France.
John had four very strong styles of painting which were usage of light, type of brushstroke, and
composition. His usage of light really separated himself from other artist in history, he found a way
to make his paintings look more realistic by adding red and green together in his trees for example.
That specific color addition was never seen before him and really caught the eye of people in his
time. He had a impressive natural brushstroke which in The Royal Academy wasn't very popular.
Only later after his passing was his technique actually appreciated and became a normal use. Lastly
his composition, he loved to paint exactly what he saw in front of him, he rarely used realism in his

Memory: Similarities And Differences Of Memory And Memory
I will be looking at the conceptual and technical similarities, differences and influences between the
artwork of the artists that I researched and my own artwork.
The topic that we were given was that of 5mm moments. From this I decided to look into the
concept of dreams, nightmares and memories and how they can change us into different people.
For my drawing component I drew profile faces because you can never see the true nature of a
person no matter how hard you try. I person is constantly changed and characterised by their
experiences. Dreams nightmares and memories change people through the experience.
I decided to also change what the faces look like throughout the pictures. I decided to do this

colours and it adds to the intensity and adds emphasis.
 An example of his work is "American Flag" which is a picture of a woman which is in greyscale
with an American flag that is in its actual colours to emphasis the meaning.
Paul Jenkins was a very expressionistic in the way that there was dramatic changes in colour and
painting technique. The viewer also does not know where to look to see what they think they are
supposed to see. There is also no definitive way to look at his artworks.
 An example of his work is "The Archer" which is a painting that is impasto in some areas and the
painting technique constantly changes. There seems to also be no definitive place to focus.
Francoise Nielly influenced me because she had clean brushstrokes and her paintings just seemed so
intense that you can't help but be attracted towards them. Like hers I wanted mine to have a definite

painting symbolizes a white woman portrayed as a racist who is denying "blacks" to vote. The

Fish Magic Analysis
Fish Magic is a combination of a charming scene decorated with vibrant colors to make one of the
most famous paintings. The painting by Paul Klee has evoked multiple emotions in the audience, as
it has it is full of aura. The Fish Magic by Klee was completed during his prime years as an artist
before he died of scleroderma. The painting has however remained to be one of the pieces which
sparked the creativity of the painter and infused a different level of skills to create a new figure.
Fish magic was created in a pane using oil and watercolors. It combines the components from the
sea, such as fish, the earth, which are flowers and the galaxy, that is the moon and the planets. The
painting appears as though Klee was conveying a complex story using the elements of the sea, sky
on canvas and the earth. He expresses his romantic, expressionist and surreal mood through the
painting . Any person examining Klee's work for the first time will definitely think it was a work of
a nursery watercolor worm. After looking carefully at the elements, one can see how the elements in
the painting fuse together to illustrate a message after seeing hoe Klee was managed to make an
artistic impression using simple elements.
There are several imitations of the Fish Magic painting, which have been produced after the
completion of the initial painting but have not reached the standard of the initial painting by Klee.
Klee has made other artistic impressions with his prowess as a modern artist .

Millard Meiss's Painting In Florence And Siena After The...
The Black Death left more than an impact on the population of Florence and Siena in Italy, it
impacted the economy, the religious views, and the art of the thirteenth century. Millard Meiss in his
book Painting In Florence And Siena After The Black Death highlights the changes that occur in the
artistic world in Florence and Siena after the Black Death hits in 1348, 1363, and 1374. He focuses
on the similarities between the two cities and reasons behind them such as the common experience
of economic failure, pestilence, social conflict, their fear, sense of guilt, and varieties of their
religious response (P. 8).

The chapter is structured to tell of the economic and political crises the cities experienced leading up
to the Black Death then moves onto the effects the plague had on culture and art. In the section
about the Black Death, Meiss used statistics of deaths in the cities to prove himself credible on the
subject but did not state the source from which he got the numbers. He also included anecdotes from
survivors such as Angolo di Tura to give a sense of imagery of the bodies piled up in the streets, "
piling them up tier upon tier as merchandise is stowed in a ship" (P. 65). In the section labeled The
Effect Upon Culture And Art, Meiss talks about the new opinions on art specifically about religious
art, which there was a new demand for. He explains in detail after the plague people led lives of
irresponsible pleasure. The reason Meiss talked about this consequence of the plague the most in the
chapter was to show how the people of the two cities lived each day like it was their last and became
self–indulgent. He ties the conclusion of the chapter back to art and how the artists of the time

Summary Of The Nightmare By Henry Fuseli
The painting, "The Nightmare", was composed in 1781 by Henry Fuseli. Henry was an artist of the
Romantic era when he created his most famous piece of artwork, "The Nightmare", which is known
well for his take on Incubus. The Enlightenment period in which this painting was born in, was a
time where new ideas were starting to be discovered. The demon in "The Nightmare", Incubus, is
associated with Medieval mythology and symbolizes a demon rapist. The painter, Henry Fuseli is
able to achieve the horrific view of the artwork and tell a story by focusing on the positions and
mood of the setting and making sure each aspect of the art complements and bounces off of other
figures.

Henry paints the woman in white due to her being the main focus of the artwork. In addition, white
is a color of purity and innocence which is portrayed in the painting. The woman appears to be the
victim and Incubus, who is brown, looks guilty and seems to be the cause of her death or the terrible
nightmare. Incubus is brown, interferes with the purity of the female, and symbolizes earth and
warmth which contradicts with his character. Henry might have decided to paint Incubus brown on
account of him wanting to include warmth into the art piece. The black horse's head, which is seen
emerging out of the cranberry red curtains, depicts death giving the lady a visit and possibly
accompanying Incubus. The black horse has white eyes which makes him look ghostly. In addition
to the horse's head creeping out of the curtains, the cranberry curtains and blanket in the painting
allows it to have a dramatic effect. The color cranberry red usually symbolizes the hue of blood,
which is used to add more depth to the painting.
As stated in the previous paragraph, Henry includes strong colors that give the painting an overall
dramatic effect. The artist mainly focuses on using dark colors which creates a murky horrific mood.
The colors within the artwork bounce off of each other but somehow guide the viewers to follow the
figures in a counterclockwise path. These details contribute to the painting's overall appearance and
they make the viewers glimpse at it longer than other art

Analyzing Kehinde Wiley's 'Napoleon Leading The Army Over...
Kehinde Wiley's "Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps", is an oil painting on a canvas. The
painting is of a black man with his face toward us riding on a horse across stones that are all
different sizes. The stones have words on them and look like it was flat ground before but something
like an earthquake shifted the ground. In the background behind the man and the horse is a red
curtain with a tan design all over it. The man on the horse is also wearing a green camouflage
looking outfit with yellow boots and a yellowish gold cape, and he has a white bandana on his head.
The horse that the man is riding on is white with a black spot in between the front legs on his chest
and black around his eyes. The horse also is in a rearing position with the man holding his right arm

The goal of this artwork, as stated on the Brooklyn Museum website, is that "Wiley presents a new
brand of portraiture that redefines and affirms Black identity and simultaneously questions the
history of Western painting." These ideas are communicated in the painting because unlike the
original painting, Bonaparte Crossing the Alps at Grand–Saint–Bernard, the character in the painting
is a black male, which is indicating that he has power and a higher status that black people did not
have. Being a black male himself, Wiley was inspired to do this piece to show that black people are
just as equal as white. The teaching resource from Brooklyn Museum explains how Wiley was
brought up in an urban area when black people were not seen as equal to white people, and they
faced many challenges because of this. As mentioned in NY Times article "A Sprawling

with identity and culture, and also historical

Analysis of Millard Meiss´ Painting in Florence and Siena...
This book my Millard Meiss is addressing an area of study that is lacking. This text while
informative is difficult to follow and the puts a lot of pressure on the reader to connect the dots. The
content of the early renaissance can often be a difficult time in art history to nail down and discuss
just because it is on the cusp of the late medieval and the renaissance itself. As any time of transition
it can be difficult to understand what is happening in the world of art but may have been more
convincing if he had placed this Tuscan period within the context of Europe as a whole at the time
.This text by Millard Meiss helps the audience contextualize what was was happening in Italy after
the black death and in doing so we understand the art world that much better. That being said the
way in which Miess goes about making the argument that the art of this time is regressive, is
problematic. In response to the question posed by this assignment how effective in my view is
Millard Meiss's argumentation? I am coming from the stand point that his argument is not effective.
His argument is problematic because it is unclear, difficult to follow, lacks cohesion, and puts too
much work on the reader. These elemental issues with his writing and argumentation are what in my
view render the argument Millard Meiss is trying to make ineffective throughout his text "Painting
in Florence and Siena after the Black Death". Furthermore, one of the major issues with the
argument that Meiss is

Saturn Devouring His Son Essay
"Saturn Devouring His Son" is a 146 by 83 centimeter oil painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de
Goya y Lucientes. The painting was made between the years of 1819 to 1823 as a part of his series
entitled "The Black Paintings".
Goya was a romantic painter and printmaker who was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain, on the
30th of March. His parents were Jose Benito de Goya y Franque and Gracia de Lucientes y
Salvador. Lucientes's artistic style and the mysterious themes of his vivid masterpieces leave
modern artists in awe. The character and personality of Goya can be vividly seen through his
astounding artwork. He is known by many modern artists to be one of the very last "master painters"
of his time.
His piece, "Saturn Devouring His Son", refers to Saturn, a mythological god of Ancient Rome.
Saturn was thought by most to be the god of wealth, agriculture, and dissolution, among other
things. In later developments, Saturn became thought to also have domain over time. He was
thought to be in his reign during the Golden Age, which was a time of great economic success in
Rome, when the people did not have to work. In Roman mythology, Saturn had children and grew to
fear a prophecy that stated one of his sons would grow to be powerful enough to overthrow him, as
he did with his own father, Caelus. Hence, he ate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Angel Of The Last Judgment
Wassily Kandinsky's Angel of the Last Judgment was made during the pre–war times in Europe.
Kandinsky's painting was included in the Merzbacher collection, a collection focused on how colour
had been used by European Artists in the 20th century. Kandinsky along with other Artists such as
Derain, Vlaminck and Braque were considered as "Fauves" meaning "wild beasts" a comment made
by Art critics who found their use of colour unnatural and aggressive. Along with Angel of the Last
Judgment, many paintings made around this time centralized around apocalyptic themes of chaos
and death. In the painting the viewer is caught in the middle of destruction with the piece's swirling
arcs that propel the eye across the canvas. Through prominent black lines an angelic silhouette is
implemented in the center of the painting. A sense of motion is conveyed with feathered strokes of
the figure's angelic wings. The upper borders are filled with warm reds and oranges with curved
black arcs interrupting and swirling around the piece. In the upper right corner of the painting
immerges a trumpet that seems to be screeching yellow and illuminates the whole painting. Four

In this painting we see an infant that is in a boat. Behind the infant there is an angel that is guiding
the child out of a cave into a beautiful landscape. Thomas Cole paints the landscape very rich; you
get o a sense of warmth and calmness. There is beautiful green land, big mountains, and different
types of flowers.
According to the website Exploring Thomas Cole, there are different types of allegories in this
painting. The first allegory is the hourglass that is in the boat. The hourglass is meant to represent
time, the second allegory is the river, which is meant to represent the stream of life, and the third
allegory is the flower, which is an Egyptian lotus, which Cole described as "symbolical of Human
Life." Finally the cave that the infant and the angel are coming out of according to Thomas Cole is
an "emblematic of our earthly origin, and the mysterious Past." Cole uses different types of light and
dark colors it gives the painting a different look, the light colors fade and so does the dark colors,
this is called chiaroscuro. Perspective was also used in this painting; different parts of the painting
have different sizes giving us a sense of depth.

How Significant Artists Are Influenced By Events
Examine how significant artists are influenced by events in the world INTRO: In art, Romanticism
is the expression of a personal response to a subject or emotion. It was a reaction against the formal
logic and organisation of neo–classicism as artists added free manifestation of their personal
interpretation of events in their world through subject matter reflecting attitudes or moods. Withing
artworks, artists expressed traumatic and gruesome circumstances of war and terror through the
politics of figurative art. With this, human bodies were centralised using figures as the focal point as
they were the dominant feature, in an environment that adds meaning. Artists Theodore Gericault

With this, the silhouetted figures are also seen to convey the dramatic and inhumane movement of
figures as well as their intense facial emotions and gestures. In strong contrast, the prior movement
of the logical neo–classicism is seen, which a balanced design, clear composition and action that is
easily read in 'The Oath of Horatii', by Jacques–Louis David. David's painting is a neo–classical
work that restores the ethical ideas of antiquity. Ancient ideas are demonstrated with the use of
structural devices such as the columns used to support the building. These arches correspond with
the grouping figures. Figures that are framed by the arches and being separated by the columns
include; the brothers, the father, and the women. Roman architecture in this painting is characterised
by the absence of a base. However, it is grounded by strong tiles displayed as a grid. As seen in 'The
Raft of Medusa', David's painting also consists of triangular composition which is a clear focal
point. Gericault's triangle of hope is seen as a progression from the depths of despair to an apex of
hope, whereas David's is a logically organised triangle configuration which highlights the allegiance
to the family. A contrasting allegiance to family to disgrace and despair in 'Raft of Medusa'. BODY

Lady With An Ermine Essay
Lady with an Ermine is a painting by Italian Leonardo da Vinci from around 1489–1490. During this

others (like da Vinci) still typically followed the realism route. With that being said his Lady with
the Ermine is a very interesting portrait painting. This beautiful woman is dressed in fine red and

anything to appear far in the distance, because I think he just wants it to be a simple portrait without
anything appearing in the background to make it more complex. And its a portrait so it maybe most
likely for no middle ground. This is often where the main action takes place, and in
this artwork Leonardo didn't want anything else to catch the viewers eye other than the

Guernica Comparison

  • 1. Guernica Comparison The painting "Guernica," by Pablo Picasso, and the painting "Executions of the Third of May," by Francisco de Goya, were are both centered around the same general theme. There are several similarities between the two pieces regarding content and meaning. In addition to the similarities of these two pieces, there are also some differences regarding the artists, the creation process of the pieces, and the technical aspects that make up the paintings. Similarities and differences can be identified in these two pieces by analyzing the historical, political, social, cultural, religious, stylistic, and technical aspects of both the form and content of the two works of art. In 1937, Pablo Picasso created one of the most famous paintings of the 20th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... General Franco accepted aid from currently fascist governments, such as those of Hitler and Mussolini, in exchange for the allowance of Hitler's Nazis to practice their aerial warfare against the inhabitants of Guernica. On April 28, 1937, the German Nazis air bombed the town of Guernica, which is the old Basque capital in Spain. As a result, the civilians of Guernica were left with a destroyed town and the massacre of numerous inhabitants. At the time of this event, Picasso was working in Paris and was commissioned by his government to paint a mural for the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris World's Fair. "Guernica" was completed in a short time following the bombing of Guernica. Picasso did not allow "Guernica" to be displayed in Spain while General Franco was in power, which led to the portrayal of the painting at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After General Franco was stripped of his power, the painting made its way back to Spain to be displayed in Madrid, the Spanish capital. The Basque Nationalist Movement, who favors the Basque territories cession from Spain, claims that "Guernica" has been stolen from them. • 3. 19th Century Photography Research Paper The Influence Of Realism In 19th Century Photography Through research of 19th century photography and Realism this paper will set out to prove that the realism movement helped influence photography. It will do this by going in to detail what Realism is, how 19th century photography worked, and how they are similar and different. This will be show further with an example of both a painting during the Realism movement as well and a 19th century photography to explain in more details what each of these things are. This paper will establish a strong case for how Realism had an influence on photography. Realism is a tricky art form. And it is less of a style than a commitment to paint the modern world honestly, without turning away from the brutal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The artist of this painting, Gustave Courbet, was one of the first artist to call himself a "Realist" (1819–1877). This painting is a picture of a young man and an old man crushing rocks to produce the gravel used for the roadbeds. These stonebreakers represent the disenfranchised lower class on whose backs the modern life was being built upon. The young man in the painting is struggling to move the large basket of rocks to the side of the road. He is wearing a ripped shirt and pants, but his working boots are more modern. The older gentleman, is knelt down, tired from the work. He is breaking the rocks, while wearing the outfit of a lower class man. What the older man was wearing is the more traditional style of a peasant with his wooden shoes. The younger man is almost representing a grim of the future, while the older man shows a more out of date, or the rural past. Courbet said when talking about his inspiration for this painting is that "One side is a an old man seventy... On the other side is a young fellow... In labor such as this, one's life begins that way, and it ends the same way." (Stokstad 973) Courbet does a great job of signifying the brutality of the modern life with his choices of dull, and dark colors, as well as a more rough painting patters, he uses awkward poses and stilted composition. • 5. Saturn Devouring His Son Saturn Devouring His Son Saturn Devouring His Son is a name given to a mural painting painted by Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes during year 1820 to 1823 at his house Quinta del Sordo (Villa of The Deaf Man) which is located at Spain. He used al secco technique (also called fresco–secco) which means the color pigments are mixed with water and egg york and applied on the moistened plaster. This painting was painted in oils on one of the wall of his dining room. Goya showed Saturn crouched in the centre of the painting with expanded face, bulging eyes and widely opened mouth which he was consuming a smaller human figure with his fists had clenched into it. A headless cadaver is also painted in the back side view which only has a left ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His sixth child Jupiter (Zeus) survived because his wife, Ops (Rhea) tricked on him. Jupiter later overthrew Saturn and saved all his five brothers and sisters which still survived inside their father's stomach. Goya might inspired by Peter Paul Rubens who also previously painted a Saturn Devouring His Son on 1636. But Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son is different with Rubens's. Rubens's Saturn was painted less cannibalistic whereas Goya's Saturn is more cannibal as he emphasized on Saturn's expression. However, Wright (1993, p.51) had written that Rubens's is more horrific as viewer's sympathy is straight drop on the innocent baby yet to be eaten. There is also another difference spotted. Rubens's painted an innocent child whereas Goya painted a cadaver that looked like a younger adult. In Goya's painting, the cadaver was in long legged, round buttocks and wide hips. The gender of the young adult is remained unknown as there is headless and not facing to us. But some experts suggested that the cadaver was a female young adult due to Goya's later love life. Emotionalism aspect also can be seen in this painting. The public is curious why Goya painted Saturn. Some historians suggested that this is related to Goya's son, Javier. Goya and his wife, Josefa, had plenty of children but only Javier ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Picasso Mother Pablo Picasso's The Mother, 1901, is an oil painting on cardboard mounted on panel. The painting depicts the scene of a mother carrying a toddler with one hand, and holding her child in the other hand. These three figures are in the foreground, and behind them, we can see slight landscape of houses, a hill, and the sky. Although Picasso depicts the simple subject of the mother and her two children, he represents the mom's exhausting and rough life through dull composition, faded and blue color, and rough style. Picasso creates a still composition of figures, and conveys heaviness and roughness in the painting. Among the group of the mother and children, the mom is the biggest subject in the painting. He slightly tilts her to the direction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reproduction is largely compared to the original work especially in the color and texture. Most noticeable difference is first in color. In the painting, Picasso intentionally uses dull and cold colors and creates the rough mood. Particularly, he uniquely paints blue shades in the mother's profile, expressing her tiredness and depression. However, in the reproduction, most colors are whitened. The faded gray in the sky and even dull blue in the mother are all shown as white in the postcard. While whitening out the subtle cold shades in the original work, it creates more contrast in color. The light colors are brightened, almost whitened, and dark colors, such as black in outlines or the mother's cloth, are far more darkened. The color contrast becomes more obvious and clear in the ... • 9. How To Write A Rhetorical Analysis Of A Snowstorm This painting is about a lower–class family that is going through a snowstorm in the middle of the winter to survive instead of just staying inside the warm house. This painting is called the snowstorm and was painted by Francisco Goya to illustrate a lighter but still hard time in life. This painting is about a family out in a snowstorm and illustrates a lot about the character of the family with the hardships that they went through, along with the desperation and willpower to survive. While the family is out in the middle of the snowstorm they have many hardships to deal with. The family is all grouped together in the middle of the painting with their jackets wrapped around them and their heads facing down to keep warm with snow in every direction of them as if they don't want to travel. This shows that the family is cold and, yet they have to face the hardship of the winter. The tree next to the family is severely swayed to the right the branch in front of the family was broken off from the tree and laying on the ground showing how hard it was to face the cold and wind of the storm. A dog is in front of the family at attention on all four feet with the dog's paw prints trailing the dog showing that the family is moving in the direction away from the prints. There is a dead pig draped across and the back of a mule and tied down to it, along with a man on the left side has a gun in between his arms tucked into his body as if he is the one who hunts the food for the family. ... All of the paintings were painted on white canvas and displayed in rows as if, "resting on a shelf like groceries in a store" (MoMA). Each piece is nearly identical to the first with the main difference being that each name of the soup's flavor is different, two specific soup cans with a ribbon across the seal stating, "NEW, GREAT AS A SAUCE, TOO", and another with the words "Old–fashioned" above the flavor label. Each can has a black outlines and details, red upper half, brown centered seal, while lower half, read flavor name, black and gold "SOUP", gold printed patterns, and a single red line. • 13. Union University Art Gallery Analysis Union University Art Gallery plays host to several different artists' galleries throughout the year, for free and open to the public. Currently on display is "Hodgepodge", a collection of about ten canvases by Brian Bundren. While Bundren has been painting and displaying his artwork for quite some time (his first gallery was in the mid–1990s!), "Hodgepodge" contains paintings only from 2013–2016. All of the artwork shows great precision and attention to detail. The colors are vibrant and rich. That is not to say the colors were bright or cheerful (only one painting was particularly "bright"), but the colors were all pure and distinct. Most of the paintings, in my opinion, would fit under the umbrella of surrealism. Walking into the gallery immediately starts to produce feelings of unease and perhaps feelings of being threatened. The individual objects in the paintings are very realistic but mashed together in unnatural ways. Only one painting, "J.V.'s Thunderbird", felt "calm"; it did not cause me to personally feel discomfort, even though it was not peaceful. It was a large canvas displaying an underwater scene in bright blue. A Thunderbird was half–visible along the bottom edge of the canvas. A deep sea diver was present, ... At first glance, it appears to be the muzzle of a dog, but careful inspection of the shape of the nostrils, mandible, and placement of what appears to be the eyes, it looks more to be a baboon, one of the great ape family. Pink peonies (there are two in full bloom and one bud) commonly represents love and honor, while white peonies (there is one at the bottom) represents shyness or bashfulness. For me, this painting shows that for every good thing there is in the world, there is the "other" behind it: an oft uncontrollable, primal force that is hidden beneath the ... • 15. A Portrait of a Young Man Essay A Portrait of a Young Man. Portrait of a Young Man was painted by Angolo Bronzino between the years of 1503–1572. The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches and is an oil on wood( Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1999). I picked this painting because of the self assurance, at first glance, of the young man that is depicted. This appealed to me because it reflected my own attitude. After studying the portrait for a considerable amount of time I began to see possible sadness or self– doubt in the young mans face that betrays his powerful stance. I felt a connection to the young man, knowing all too well what it was like to present a powerful outside image while knowing there was a self conscious and scared person inside. ... According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the monster heads that are found on the furniture and on the folds of the young mans clothing, which I was unable to locate, allude to literary references that would have been appreciated by the artist's friends. In the background there is a green colored room, that includes a door frame, a Doric column and a capital. Portrait of a Young Man was painted during the Mannerism period. It was done by Bronzino in Italy c.1540. The portrait is 37 5/8 by 29 ½ inches, it's vertical because it's a portrait. The frame cuts the shapes in the painting, this was done purposely in the typical Mannerism style which usually crowded the pictorial area . The painting is supported by wood, opaque oil paints were applied thickly with a fine brush, I was unable to see any distinct brush strokes. The forms are flat except for the beads on the young man's hat which seem to raise off the painting. The portrait contains a simple organization. There are few individual units like the chair and table but the picture is crowded. The shapes are regular and complete with clear defining lines. The painting is geometrically ordered, the chair and table appear to support and reinforce the pose of the young man.The palette the artist used is subdued, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Challenging Society Through Art. Challenging Society Through Art Art makes a statement, it is as simple as that. The most preferred type of art emotes happiness to the viewer throughout all of history. Yet, throughout the years, artists have come to challenge society's preference of art. Artists like Gustave Courbet, Francisco Goya, and Ai Weiwei, who decided to take the challenge and start a new progression. Social critique through art is blatantly shown throughout each of their pieces: Stonebreakers, The Third of May 1808, and Sunflower Seeds. All three are similar yet different. Through comparison, a similar theme still remains present: Each artist 's social critique through their artwork. These particular types of artwork will show how one moment in history changed the view of millions throughout centuries of time. With the use of symbolism, positioning of figures, historical context, color usage, and many other elements, these three works of art make an inspiring statement to the world. The first painting, Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet depicts two males that go to work breaking stone and wearing torn and tattered clothing. This job was usually done by the lower classes of society. At this time in France there was a rising of revolutionary thinking. The reason for the sudden outbreak involved many factors, the ones portrayed in this painting are the demands of the working classes. The figures are not arranged in the typical way. • 19. Essay about SUMMERTIME AND SPRING RAIN SUMMERTIME AND SPRING RAIN Upon first sight, it appears that John Sloan's Spring Rain and Edward Hopper's Summertime only common characteristic is that they are both oil paintings on canvas. Spring Rain, from the school of Impressionistic art, was painted in 1912. Summertime, which possesses a simplified, schematic style, was created over thirty years later, in 1943. Therefore, there are extreme differences in the two artists' technique and style. However, despite these differences, the two painters' works embody the same theme: They are both scenes of urban realism characterized by isolation and loneliness. John Sloan's painting depicts a dismal view of municipal life. The painting's gloominess is achieved most effectively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pale yellow can be detected in the window shades, in the floor on the staircase and in the woman's hat. In order to contrast the yellow, Hopper uses a very light, whitish blue in the curtains and in the woman's dress. The fact that the woman's dress is white, with a hint of blue, suggests that the woman is almost, but not quite pure. Another compositional style that creates despondency in the paintings is Sloan and Hopper's line usage. Hopper uses strong verticals, horizontals, and diagonals. These lines form simple, large geometric forms. This preciseness gives the architecture a sense of depth and perspective. There is also a stark play of light and shadow in the architecture of the building. All of these elements make the building's architecture extremely realistic. In contrast, John Sloan heavily uses curvy, S–shaped lines in Spring Rain, for example, in the trees and in the shape of the woman's body. The path of the top lines on the park benches gives the painting perspective, drawing the viewer's eye to the background. The background of the painting uses the technique of pointillism, the specific arrangement of paint splotches. This technique also helps to give the painting texture in the tree branches and leaves. Even though both painters use different line styles, both styles trigger similar emotional effects in the viewer. For example, Sloan's contoured lines give the painting a sense ... The gold glitter wings symbolize the freedom blacks earned because of the death of the historical figures represented in the figures subtly. Because of the historical figures in the painting, laws were passed and people were inspired. However, historically, just because laws were passed and people were inspired, didn't mean automatic change, it didn't mean complete freedom. That's what this painting represents, freedom at a grasp. The black people received their wings( the laws, the courage, the platform) to fly due to the deaths of many represented and unrepresented figures, but did they fly, can they fly? • 23. Visual Analysis Essay On Bridget Riley There is a single gallery exhibition showing at the Art Institute of Chicago, presenting Bridget Riley's works. Gallery 294 is exhibiting three paintings and one installation in all. Riley is a British artist who dominantly engaged in a short–lived art movement called Op Art in 1960s and since then she developed her works from abstract black and white paintings to colorful stripe paintings. Riley inherited the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. She used simple geometric shapes in her paintings and arouses viewers' complicated sensations but also provides viewers' virtually optical experiences. In Bridget Riley's works, an illusion of movement (and of volume) is engendered by the destabilization of a regular pattern and the continually confusing inversion of figure and ground. (Foster, 418) It is very explicit in Ascending and Descending Hero, which occupies the most conspicuous position in the gallery. The overall painting is symmetrically constituted by different sized black triangles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Red Modulation (Yellow and Orange) is in between the Ascending and Descending Hero and Horizontal Vibration. Riley repeated warm color horizontal lines in the same thickness. It does not only create a pattern, but also hides several vertical lines when the viewer steps back to the middle of the gallery. Some pink vertical lines are dancing in the repetitive stripes. Both of the pieces offer viewers a virtual optical experience. Walking slowly into the installation Continuum, Riley built a hypnotic space for viewers by painting monochromatic geometric shapes ... • 25. The De Goya Y Lucientes He is considered the most important artist in Spain during the late 18th and early 19th century and was one of the most prominent and successful painters in Europe. Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes was a romantic painter and printmaker whose style changed drastically throughout his life; he is considered the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. His style fits into the category of Romanticism, which is most apparent in his paintings of the Spanish Royal family after becoming First Painter to the King of Spain in 1786. Six years later, he suffered an awful illness which ultimately left him deaf and shaped his future work. After Napoleon Bonaparte rose to prominence during the French Revolution, Spain was invaded due to its political and strategic importance to the French. Goya was able to capture the horrors he saw in his anti–war works produced in paintings and with intaglio prints which he didn't make public. The throne of Spain was taken by Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon 's brother, who was backed by a large French military force. After the political situation in Spain normalized and rule was returned to it's rightful heir, Goya returned to painting commissioned portraits. With ailing health, he moved to a country home where he completed the haunting Black Paintings which were painted directly to his walls. Due to his health, he received permission from King Ferdinand IV for an indefinite leave of absence and relocates to Paris. He completes a small number of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My initial reaction was of fear. These are artworks that should not be simply seen in front of a computer screen. The thickness of the paint and the careful attention to details; these are things that are missed if not seen in person. Upon walking into the small room the first painting that draws the attention of visitors is this painting. Not only is this a grotesque piece in an otherwise frightening room, Saturn also looks like he's rather enjoying this action, and his intense glare from his bulging eyes gives the impression as if you (the viewer) are the next target. The goal for this essay is to show Goya's way of depicting events that have affected not only society but him personally. It is a mythological subject that literally shows Saturn devouring his son. Light is very important as it focuses directly on the face of Saturn and the body of his son. It is a blinding light that leaves the dark background with a feeling of gloominess. The composition revolves around a single plane in which Saturn is placed devouring his victim. The dark background marks the sense of depth. Violent motion appreciates both his posture, and his mouth. His face reflects an expression of drama and tenebrism. The predominant color on the drawing emphasizes the dark tones that contrast with the clarity of the body of the victim. His deformity produces more drama in the scene. ... • 29. Civil War Visual Analysis The painting was very thought provoking and sprouted many ideas in my head, however, their was one idea that stood out more than the others. I listed the thoughts below in the bullet points. The color scheme of this painting was very chaotic. The outside areas were vibrants shades of yellow, green, and some blue. The inner center section of the painting was dark red with a big blotch of black covering it. Other students took the hidden shades of colors to stand for the bravery that most citizens stereotype war with. However, in reality their is only blood stains that cover everything and war is just an act of foolishness. From my point of view, the outside colors stood for the different viewpoints that each individual brings to the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So if you look at the painting in this perspective, you can hypothesize that the red and green viewpoints have collided making the big black blotch in the center. So it is concludes that when these varying viewpoints collided you create a massive surge of chaos and bloodshed. The other thing interesting about the painting was the setting of the picture. Unlike most paintings this one was set inside a frame that resembled a barrier. This was very creative and gave the viewer the sense that all these soldiers are trapped in this vortex of unending bloodshed. Their was a part of the canvas that seemed to run out of the boundaries of the frame. It was interesting how the blue line leading away from the scene closely resembled a river. It felt as if many of the soldier may have tried to escape from this gruesome setting by flowing out of the picture and maybe forgetting all the memories. Forest described himself by stating the following: "I have always been a novelistic painter, and even when I was making abstract painting it was like creating a map, basically, and the map then turns into a landscape and the landscape adds figures...". The artist modeled this painting after various parts of his own childhood. Each part is a different memory Forest has from his life creating a unique relationship between the piece and the artist. While there is no obvious reason for their eyes being focused in another direction, the artist created variety to his art by doing so. In addition to the animal's and people's eyes looking in different directions, their eyes are distinct colors. The dark furred dog as well as the man with dark skin both have noticeably red eyes. However, each other person or animal has blue eyes. In this house, also known as Deaf Man's Villa, Goya painted what is now known as the Black Paintings. One painting stuck out more than others due to its horrifying depiction of Saturn Devouring His Son. The name of this painting was not given by Goya himself, but rather later after his death. Goya painted the painting originally with no intent of showcasing it to the public. The painting was no ordinary painting since it was painted on the walls of Goya's estate. Today, the painting currently resides in the Museo del Prado in Madrid where the target audience is anyone who would like to see the magnificently horrifying piece of work for themselves. The French Occupation Of Spain During The Peninsular War Francisco Goya was a Spanish painter and printmaker, especially known for his works depicting and commenting on the horrors of the French Occupation of Spain during the Peninsular War, in the early 1800's. 'The Third of May', an oil on canvas painting created in 1814 by Goya, illustrates the mass executions of innocent Spanish civilians, in response to the uprising of civilians against the French military the previous day. 'Saturn Devouring his son', another oil on canvas masterpiece by Goya, depicts the mythological, gruesome figure of the god Saturn, who, based upon the fear of a prophecy, ate each one of his own children. 'The Third of May' depicts a pitch black sky, looming over crowds of people below, dimly lit by geometric lanterns nearby. The focus of the scene involves two separate groups – the faceless, practically identical French military, aiming their guns towards the direction of a group of petrified civilians, making various different positions. Around the civilians are lifeless bodies, coated in their own blood. As many of the civilians turn away, one figure is prominent in the centre. The man's arms are outstretched in a seemingly surrendering manner, as he kneels upon the ground, waiting to be shot. • 37. The White Light Painting By Jackson Pollock When a person looks at a painting everyone will have a different outlook from the painting. The only one that truly knows what is behind the art piece would be the artist. Artists try to speak through their art, even when other people might not understand the painting or message. The artist has specific ways the painting is managed .From the moment the artist comes up with the idea of what to pain to the moment its being shown. Colors, formality, frame and style help identify some stuff the artist is trying to point out. Looking at the "White Light" painting , I see a lot of different colors. One thing that stand out for me is in the back of all the bright colors theirs black. Black is the main color of the background and then starts getting lighter and eventually ends with majority of white on top. In between of all the black and white you will see the small amounts of the primary hues: yellow, red, and blue. The value in the colors in the painting vary. The colors are light and go up to darks then change back to the lighter side. As I look into the picture and I try to see what type of composition the painting has. Looking very closely at the picture I lean more into this picture being in the linear type of composition. • 39. Francisco De Goya Black Paintings Francisco de Goya's Pinturas negras, or Black Paintings, are some of the most grotesque and unsettling images in art history, with one painting in particular, Saturno devorando a su hijo, or Saturn Devouring One of His Sons, standing out the most amongst them all. With his wildly staring eyes, gaping mouth and half–eaten son in his hands, it makes one wonder what would drive an artist to create an image like this. Goya, however, was not uneducated in the horrors of the world, witnessing the travesties of the Peninsular War, the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition, surviving two life threatening illnesses, with one leaving him completely deaf, and the death of six of his seven children. Perhaps it was one of these instances in particular that encouraged him to conceiving this disconcerting figure, or perhaps it was a combination of the three. At the beginning of Goya's career, in 1777, he was commissioned to create a series of tapestry cartoons from the Royal Tapestry Factory, designing some 42 patterns over five years. Some of his more popular paintings were originally tapestry cartoons such as The Parasol. His use of the popular Rococo style, brought him to the attention of the aristocracy of Spain. In 1789, he was appointed to court painter to Charles IV and then the following year, he became First Court Painter. His portraits of the king, queen and royal family, were anything but flattering. The painting by Paul Klee has evoked multiple emotions in the audience, as it has it is full of aura. The Fish Magic by Klee was completed during his prime years as an artist before he died of scleroderma. The painting has however remained to be one of the pieces which sparked the creativity of the painter and infused a different level of skills to create a new figure. Fish magic was created in a pane using oil and watercolors. It combines the components from the sea, such as fish, the earth, which are flowers and the galaxy, that is the moon and the planets. The painting appears as though Klee was conveying a complex story using the elements of the sea, sky on canvas and the earth. He expresses his romantic, expressionist and surreal mood through the painting . Any person examining Klee's work for the first time will definitely think it was a work of a nursery watercolor worm. After looking carefully at the elements, one can see how the elements in the painting fuse together to illustrate a message after seeing hoe Klee was managed to make an artistic impression using simple elements. • 59. Summary Of The Nightmare By Henry Fuseli The painting, "The Nightmare", was composed in 1781 by Henry Fuseli. Henry was an artist of the Romantic era when he created his most famous piece of artwork, "The Nightmare", which is known well for his take on Incubus. The Enlightenment period in which this painting was born in, was a time where new ideas were starting to be discovered. The demon in "The Nightmare", Incubus, is associated with Medieval mythology and symbolizes a demon rapist. The painter, Henry Fuseli is able to achieve the horrific view of the artwork and tell a story by focusing on the positions and mood of the setting and making sure each aspect of the art complements and bounces off of other figures. Henry is able to control what he wants his viewers to see. "The Nightmare" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Henry paints the woman in white due to her being the main focus of the artwork. In addition, white is a color of purity and innocence which is portrayed in the painting. The woman appears to be the victim and Incubus, who is brown, looks guilty and seems to be the cause of her death or the terrible nightmare. Incubus is brown, interferes with the purity of the female, and symbolizes earth and warmth which contradicts with his character. Henry might have decided to paint Incubus brown on account of him wanting to include warmth into the art piece. The black horse's head, which is seen emerging out of the cranberry red curtains, depicts death giving the lady a visit and possibly accompanying Incubus. The black horse has white eyes which makes him look ghostly. In addition to the horse's head creeping out of the curtains, the cranberry curtains and blanket in the painting allows it to have a dramatic effect. The color cranberry red usually symbolizes the hue of blood, which is used to add more depth to the painting. As stated in the previous paragraph, Henry includes strong colors that give the painting an overall dramatic effect. The artist mainly focuses on using dark colors which creates a murky horrific mood. The colors within the artwork bounce off of each other but somehow guide the viewers to follow the figures in a counterclockwise path. These details contribute to the painting's overall appearance and they make the viewers glimpse at it longer than other art ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Greek Black Figure The information used by the author to support his statements about the use of red figures versus the use of black figures is shown through the pictures of black–figured ceramic that is painted around a vase of 570–560 BCE (64) and the red–figure technique ceramic vase painted around 530 BCE (65). The author gives photographic credit directly under the pictures to the museums were the vases are located as well as in the photo credit pages (897). • 63. Analyzing Kehinde Wiley's 'Napoleon Leading The Army Over... Kehinde Wiley's "Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps", is an oil painting on a canvas. The painting is of a black man with his face toward us riding on a horse across stones that are all different sizes. The stones have words on them and look like it was flat ground before but something like an earthquake shifted the ground. In the background behind the man and the horse is a red curtain with a tan design all over it. The man on the horse is also wearing a green camouflage looking outfit with yellow boots and a yellowish gold cape, and he has a white bandana on his head. The horse that the man is riding on is white with a black spot in between the front legs on his chest and black around his eyes. The horse also is in a rearing position with the man holding his right arm out pointing to the top of the painting and his left arm holding onto the reins. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The goal of this artwork, as stated on the Brooklyn Museum website, is that "Wiley presents a new brand of portraiture that redefines and affirms Black identity and simultaneously questions the history of Western painting." These ideas are communicated in the painting because unlike the original painting, Bonaparte Crossing the Alps at Grand–Saint–Bernard, the character in the painting is a black male, which is indicating that he has power and a higher status that black people did not have. Being a black male himself, Wiley was inspired to do this piece to show that black people are just as equal as white. The teaching resource from Brooklyn Museum explains how Wiley was brought up in an urban area when black people were not seen as equal to white people, and they faced many challenges because of this. As mentioned in NY Times article "A Sprawling Retrospective for Kehinde Wiley's Heroic Portraits", most of Wiley's artwork represents problems with identity and culture, and also historical ... • 65. Analysis of Millard Meiss´ Painting in Florence and Siena... This book my Millard Meiss is addressing an area of study that is lacking. This text while informative is difficult to follow and the puts a lot of pressure on the reader to connect the dots. The content of the early renaissance can often be a difficult time in art history to nail down and discuss just because it is on the cusp of the late medieval and the renaissance itself. As any time of transition it can be difficult to understand what is happening in the world of art but may have been more convincing if he had placed this Tuscan period within the context of Europe as a whole at the time .This text by Millard Meiss helps the audience contextualize what was was happening in Italy after the black death and in doing so we understand the art world that much better. That being said the way in which Miess goes about making the argument that the art of this time is regressive, is problematic. In response to the question posed by this assignment how effective in my view is Millard Meiss's argumentation? I am coming from the stand point that his argument is not effective. His argument is problematic because it is unclear, difficult to follow, lacks cohesion, and puts too much work on the reader. These elemental issues with his writing and argumentation are what in my view render the argument Millard Meiss is trying to make ineffective throughout his text "Painting in Florence and Siena after the Black Death". Furthermore, one of the major issues with the argument that Meiss is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Saturn Devouring His Son Essay "Saturn Devouring His Son" is a 146 by 83 centimeter oil painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. The painting was made between the years of 1819 to 1823 as a part of his series entitled "The Black Paintings". Goya was a romantic painter and printmaker who was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain, on the 30th of March. His parents were Jose Benito de Goya y Franque and Gracia de Lucientes y Salvador. Lucientes's artistic style and the mysterious themes of his vivid masterpieces leave modern artists in awe. The character and personality of Goya can be vividly seen through his astounding artwork. He is known by many modern artists to be one of the very last "master painters" of his time. His piece, "Saturn Devouring His Son", refers to Saturn, a mythological god of Ancient Rome. Saturn was thought by most to be the god of wealth, agriculture, and dissolution, among other things. In later developments, Saturn became thought to also have domain over time. He was thought to be in his reign during the Golden Age, which was a time of great economic success in Rome, when the people did not have to work. In Roman mythology, Saturn had children and grew to fear a prophecy that stated one of his sons would grow to be powerful enough to overthrow him, as he did with his own father, Caelus. • 69. Angel Of The Last Judgment Wassily Kandinsky's Angel of the Last Judgment was made during the pre–war times in Europe. Kandinsky's painting was included in the Merzbacher collection, a collection focused on how colour had been used by European Artists in the 20th century. Kandinsky along with other Artists such as Derain, Vlaminck and Braque were considered as "Fauves" meaning "wild beasts" a comment made by Art critics who found their use of colour unnatural and aggressive. Along with Angel of the Last Judgment, many paintings made around this time centralized around apocalyptic themes of chaos and death. In the painting the viewer is caught in the middle of destruction with the piece's swirling arcs that propel the eye across the canvas. Through prominent black lines an angelic silhouette is implemented in the center of the painting. A sense of motion is conveyed with feathered strokes of the figure's angelic wings. The upper borders are filled with warm reds and oranges with curved black arcs interrupting and swirling around the piece. Thomas Cole paints the landscape very rich; you get o a sense of warmth and calmness. There is beautiful green land, big mountains, and different types of flowers. According to the website Exploring Thomas Cole, there are different types of allegories in this painting. The first allegory is the hourglass that is in the boat. The hourglass is meant to represent time, the second allegory is the river, which is meant to represent the stream of life, and the third allegory is the flower, which is an Egyptian lotus, which Cole described as "symbolical of Human Life." Finally the cave that the infant and the angel are coming out of according to Thomas Cole is an "emblematic of our earthly origin, and the mysterious Past." Cole uses different types of light and dark colors it gives the painting a different look, the light colors fade and so does the dark colors, this is called chiaroscuro. • 75. How Significant Artists Are Influenced By Events Examine how significant artists are influenced by events in the world INTRO: In art, Romanticism is the expression of a personal response to a subject or emotion. It was a reaction against the formal logic and organisation of neo–classicism as artists added free manifestation of their personal interpretation of events in their world through subject matter reflecting attitudes or moods. Withing artworks, artists expressed traumatic and gruesome circumstances of war and terror through the politics of figurative art. With this, human bodies were centralised using figures as the focal point as they were the dominant feature, in an environment that adds meaning. Artists Theodore Gericault and Francisco de Goya utilise bodies to demonstrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this, the silhouetted figures are also seen to convey the dramatic and inhumane movement of figures as well as their intense facial emotions and gestures. In strong contrast, the prior movement of the logical neo–classicism is seen, which a balanced design, clear composition and action that is easily read in 'The Oath of Horatii', by Jacques–Louis David. David's painting is a neo–classical work that restores the ethical ideas of antiquity. Ancient ideas are demonstrated with the use of structural devices such as the columns used to support the building. These arches correspond with the grouping figures. Figures that are framed by the arches and being separated by the columns include; the brothers, the father, and the women. Roman architecture in this painting is characterised by the absence of a base. However, it is grounded by strong tiles displayed as a grid. As seen in 'The Raft of Medusa', David's painting also consists of triangular composition which is a clear focal point. Gericault's triangle of hope is seen as a progression from the depths of despair to an apex of hope, whereas David's is a logically organised triangle configuration which highlights the allegiance to the family. A contrasting allegiance to family to disgrace and despair in 'Raft of Medusa'. During this time on rebirth for the arts some artist decided to take a more natural and abstract view on art while others (like da Vinci) still typically followed the realism route. With that being said his Lady with the Ermine is a very interesting portrait painting. This beautiful woman is dressed in fine red and green garb the contours of her clothing is soft and smooth and almost blends into her pale complexion. Her face is deep and three dimensional, his use of shading and shadow makes her seem like she is standing right in front of you. Same goes for the Lady if Cecilia Gallerani wasn't in the picture then it would remove the whole meaning of it being a portrait and again that its called Lady with an Ermine. This artwork is a closed composition because since its a portrait, it shows everything that needs to be shown in a portrait. For this artwork there is no middle ground included. The reason is that I don't think he wanted anything to appear far in the distance, because I think he just wants it to be a simple portrait without anything appearing in the background to make it more complex. And its a portrait so it maybe most likely for no middle ground. This is often where the main action takes place, and in this artwork Leonardo didn't want anything else to catch the viewers eye other than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
