I chose to my report on Francisco Goya Third of May, 1808. This painting represents the French
taking over Spain during the time Napoleon was in reign. This invasion was a two day process but
the painting is about what happened on the third of May. "Napoleon chose to invade Spain because
he wanted to out his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in power in Spain to have an alliance with Spain to
conquer Portugal" (Zappella, 2014). "The invasion was an ambush as the French told the Spanish
they were just passing through, but events soon quickly changed when the intentions became clear"
(Zappella, 2014). According to Christine Zappella, "on the third of May Spanish freedom fighters
were rounded up and massacred by the French. Their Spanish blood ran through the streets of
Madrid" (2014). "The artist was so profound by the evets, he recreated the uprising in his paintings"
(Zappelle, 2014). The first painting Goya created was the Second of May, which is Leonardo's

A Giant Seated in a Landscape, sometimes called The Colossus by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes
and Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace that was painted by Vincent Van Gogh are two very
meaningful artworks. Regarding their nationalities, Goya's artwork's geographic location is Spain
while Van Gogh's is Dutch. Goya's art is an etching that is part of the romanticism movement.
Contrary to Goya's, Van Gogh's painting was created during the time of the post–impressionism art
movement. These two artworks contrast each other very well, while also containing a few

"The Execution of Third of May" by Francisco Goya, we can see a great example of an artist who
utilized the style of the day to create a piece of art that leaves an impression. Francisco Goya was

Exploring Economic Status Vs. Painter's Actual Lifestyle
This project involves the discovery and interpretation of paintings ranging from the mid 14th–
century to the mid 18th–century. More importantly, the paintings are those which have a figure
shown in a portrait type setting that are in the process of working or showing a task of their
everyday life. I explore the use of light pertaining to the painters attitude and also the fine details to
explore economic status vs the painter's actual lifestyle. Given that both artist had contrasting
lifestyles, I believe the style reflected their personal life or current events as well. To help interpret
this research, many paintings from five different artist were divided into folders and scientifically
broken down and compared using a state of the art program. The final result of these images
concluded that Johannes Vermeer and Francisco Jose de Goya, had opposite styles. Given the fact
that Vermeer and Goya were artists of neighboring centuries, why are their styles different? This
research implies that between the mid–16th century and the mid–18th century, portraits had a
significant difference. The differences in artwork show that painting styles are directly related to
events in the particular artist lifestyle. The first artist involved in this experiment is Johannes

Artist's within the Romantic period reacted to the brutalities of inhumane occurrences in the world.
Romanticism was an art movement that occurred in the 19th century in which undoubtedly allowed
artists to react personally and emotionally to a specific subject matter. Contrasting to the refined
period of Neoclassicism, Romantics broke it's conformist, logic of the movement. The use of
centring the human figure as the dominant feature embodied the tortuous and ghastly occurrences of
war, depicting terror within their works. Theodore Gericault and Francisco Goya both made sense of
their world by expressing what they critically believed needed to be shown, the horrific act of
inhumanity.
The determined, passionate artist Gericault depicted the horrific act of abandonment of man at sea,
the Medusa which occurred in 1819. Departing from the Senegal, one hundred and forty–seven
french men and women were left knowingly abandoned on a makeshift after the wreckage on the
coast of Africa. Lacking lifeboats, individuals built a raft in order to survive whilst their conceited
captain boarded a lifeboat to safety. Upon the Medusa, individuals experienced episodes of
immeasurable starvation, extreme insanity and the beastly act of cannibalism for approximately
thirteen days.
Undoubtedly, the chaotic circumstance of soldiers and settlers were significantly portrayed by the

The French Revolution, which was a critical period of reformation, was an era in which war
happened frequently. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was an important artist of that time, who
created many artwork that portrayed wars. In the analysis of his masterpieces, people can find his
disappointment in how people pursue freedom, their ignorance, and the brutality of the wars.
Freedom was one of the main ideas in French Revolution, but in Goya's painting, he was
disappointed in how the society fought for it. In his artwork, he showed the stupidity of how people

In The Disasters of War (1810–1820), he showed how brutal the French were in the invasion of
Spain. In the early plates of the series, Goya depicted "the dead and injured are carried away,
soldiers strip corpses, which are then thrown into a common grave" in the Plate 18 – Bury them and
keep quiet (Tomlinson 1994, p.191). This picture wholly described how the war looked in Spain
during that time: how people were killed and then buried like it was a normal scenario. The
ruthlessness of the French also sent out another message that "beauty is not only destroyed, but
grotesquely ravaged to attest the end of any faith in an ideal" (p.193). In the paintings, people lost

For my writing assignment, I chose to discuss "The Third of May," by Francisco Goya. On May 2,
1808, hundreds of Goya's countrymen rebelled against the French. On May 3, these Spanish
freedom fighters were rounded up and put to death by the French. Francisco Goya was in a tough
position because he had supported the French Revolution, but the slaughter of his countrymen and
the horrors of war made him change his tune and had a profound effect on the artist. This painting is
acclaimed as one the great paintings of all time and has even been called the world's first modern
painting. The work of art itself is in the early hours of the morning taking after the uprising and
spotlights on two gatherings of men: a firing squad, and a scattered gathering or hostages held at
gunpoint. There is a row of French soldiers aiming for a Spanish man, who puts his arms up in
accommodation both to the officers and to his sure demise. There is a slope/hill behind him that
represents an executioner's wall. There is a heap of grisly dead bodies that lie at his feet, painting the

'The Third of May 1808' was painted by a Spanish painter – Francisco Goya in 1814. In this
painting, Goya attempted to describe the battle between Spanish and Napoleon during the
occupation of 1808 in the Peninsular War. It is also meant to commemorate the braveness of the
Spanish army who is trying to fight against Napoleon who backtracked his promise and betrayed the

He added a psychological value inside by raising our sympathy through looking at the faces of the
unarmed people. They are covering their face in order to avoid looking at the death which is
awaiting for them. And we cannot see the face of the army, as thought they were not human and
with no mercy. This brings up an emotional contrast between the ruthless solders and the fearful
people.
Secondly, this picture is asymmetrical balanced which creates a dynamic composition. Even thought
there is different body gesture, action and facial expression between two groups of people. We can
see that both of them are well organized in order to show a parallel pattern between left and right
side of the painting.
Thirdly, there is a horizontal line created in between the soldiers, they are all in the same posture
with their hat located on similar level, continuing with the posture of their legs.
Fourthly, repeating the existence of soldiers in the painting creates rhythm, and it leads to
movement. Movement is created by the tendency which soldiers are getting more and more

are about to be shot. Goya makes us see the Spanish people's faces, and their emotions, to make us
have empathy. In the other hand, the solders lined up with their backs toward us leave us with no
feeling for them. Saturn Devouring His Son is another painting by Goya. It was painted from 1819
to 1823. According to the traditional interpretation, it depicts the Greek myth of the Titan Cronus .
Saturn Devouring His Son is one of Goya's darkest paintings. It was painted directly onto the wall of

John Constable was a 19th century English Romantic painter. Constable is known best for his
landscape paintings, he believed that his paintings should come right from nature instead of
imagination. He made hundreds of outdoor oil sketches, he was said to be his happiest when
painting places he knew well. His landscapes were usually of the area surrounding his home that he
lived in while growing up. which is now locally referred as "Constable Country". Constable was
influenced by dutch artist, Jacob Van Ruisdael. John's most famous paintings were "Dedhame Vale"
and "The Hay Wain" his realism and vitality make his works very original. John Constable's
paintings are now very popular in British art, however in his life–time they were not very popular in
England, he only found success in France.
John had four very strong styles of painting which were usage of light, type of brushstroke, and
composition. His usage of light really separated himself from other artist in history, he found a way
to make his paintings look more realistic by adding red and green together in his trees for example.
That specific color addition was never seen before him and really caught the eye of people in his
time. He had a impressive natural brushstroke which in The Royal Academy wasn't very popular.

Baudelaire once said, "Caricatures are often the most faithful mirror of life." The art of caricature
was established into print in eighteenth–century England as a form of commentary on the current
events of the time. Caricature as a style itself is a combination of two separate social inventions.
"Caricature Adopting the Italian invention of caricatura–the graphic exaggeration of facial and
bodily features for comic effect and combining it with an updated repertoire of visual metaphor,
personification, and allegorical attributes. " Though born in England, the story about to be told in
this paper is one of Spanish origin, a story about Francisco Goya. This paper will discuss how Goya
implemented painting, drawing, and printing technique to stimulate social critique of and satirize the
subjects of his works. Then how does Goya's methodology transcend into modern caricature and
social critique?
Before one can talk about his prints, one must understand who Francisco Goya is as an artist. Goya
was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker of late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout
his long career was an important commentator and chronicler of his era. Goya produced a great

Humanities 1101 The Third of May Francisco De Goya was born on March 30 about 1746 in
Fuentes de todos, Spain. He studied painting from age 14. He became a court painter to the Spanish
Crown in 1786 and the early portion of his career. Goya was considered one of the most crucial
Spanish artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Francisco married Josefa Bayeu y
Subías.The couple had only one child; he received the name of Xavier. One of the most recognized

Francisco Goya brings oils to life in this painting titled The Third of May, 1808 to life around the
year of 1814 on a canvas frame of 104.7 inches by 135.8 inches of canvas. Goya painted this piece
in remembrance of hundreds of Spanish freedom fighters that were killed by French after Napoleon
set out to concur Spain. Goya also painted an oil painting entitled The Second of May, 1808 that was

The negative space of the painting seems to be greater than the positive, even though the box that
seems to be emitting the light seems to be in the middle of the painting. I say this because despite
the light that is on the ground showing the blood on the street, the man standing in a surrendered
stance, and the few soldiers that are highlighted yet with still some shadows there is great darkness

He is considered the most important artist in Spain during the late 18th and early 19th century and
was one of the most prominent and successful painters in Europe. Francisco Jose de Goya y
Lucientes was a romantic painter and printmaker whose style changed drastically throughout his
life; he is considered the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. His style fits into the
category of Romanticism, which is most apparent in his paintings of the Spanish Royal family after
becoming First Painter to the King of Spain in 1786. Six years later, he suffered an awful illness
which ultimately left him deaf and shaped his future work. After Napoleon Bonaparte rose to
prominence during the French Revolution, Spain was invaded due to its political and strategic
importance to the French. Goya was able to capture the horrors he saw in his anti–war works
produced in paintings and with intaglio prints which he didn't make public. The throne of Spain was
taken by Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon 's brother, who was backed by a large French military force.
After the political situation in Spain normalized and rule was returned to it's rightful heir, Goya
returned to painting commissioned portraits. With ailing health, he moved to a country home where

commenting on the horrors of the French Occupation of Spain during the Peninsular War, in the

hand accounts of murder, rape, pillaging, and mutilation. He quietly recorded these

overlooked when it was first unveiled because of the abstract nature of its composition but is now
seen as famous representation of the devastating effects of war on innocent people.
Francisco Goya's The Disasters of War, No. 18: Bury Them and Say Nothing is an etching with
aquatint. It is also in black and white and features another gruesome image of war. It is smaller in

As a result of the revolt, eighty peasants were gathered together and executed during the pre–dawn
hours of May third. Despite the overwhelming defeat of the revolt, the Spanish people were not
daunted. In the countryside, during the next six years, the first guerilla warfare was waged.
Eventually Napoleon and his troops were forced from Spain, but with them left their liberal reforms
(Tone 49). Goya had been pleased with the liberal reforms and other changes that Napoleon had
instituted in Spain, but was completely disgusted with what had happened during the war. He felt

Goya made a series of etchings and paintings depicting the atrocities of both sides involved with the
war. The most famous of these paintings are the two depicting the scenes from the second and third
of May. The work focuses on the victims of the situation, which in this case are the Spanish citizens
being executed. The work is not meant to be beautiful, but is instead supposed to be horrible in order
to shock the viewer. Goya's purpose within the painting is less to blame the French, but instead to
point out to people the "faceless and mechanical forces of war itself, blindly killing a representative

I first saw this painting, Saturn Devouring His Son, at the Museum of El Prado alongside the other
Black Paintings. My initial reaction was of fear. These are artworks that should not be simply seen
in front of a computer screen. The thickness of the paint and the careful attention to details; these are
things that are missed if not seen in person. Upon walking into the small room the first painting that
draws the attention of visitors is this painting. Not only is this a grotesque piece in an otherwise
frightening room, Saturn also looks like he's rather enjoying this action, and his intense glare from
his bulging eyes gives the impression as if you (the viewer) are the next target. The goal for this
essay is to show Goya's way of depicting events that have affected not only society but him
personally.
It is a mythological subject that literally shows Saturn devouring his son. Light is very important as
it focuses directly on the face of Saturn and the body of his son. It is a blinding light that leaves the
dark background with a feeling of gloominess. The composition revolves around a single plane in
which Saturn is placed devouring his victim. The dark background marks the sense of depth. Violent
motion appreciates both his posture, and his mouth. His face reflects an expression of drama and
tenebrism. The predominant color on the drawing emphasizes the dark tones that contrast with the
clarity of the body of the victim. His deformity produces more drama in the scene.

Art makes a statement, it is as simple as that. The most preferred type of art emotes happiness to the
viewer throughout all of history. Yet, throughout the years, artists have come to challenge society's
preference of art. Artists like Gustave Courbet, Francisco Goya, and Ai Weiwei, who decided to take
the challenge and start a new progression. Social critique through art is blatantly shown throughout
each of their pieces: Stonebreakers, The Third of May 1808, and Sunflower Seeds. All three are
similar yet different. Through comparison, a similar theme still remains present: Each artist 's social
critique through their artwork. These particular types of artwork will show how one moment in
history changed the view of millions throughout centuries of time. With the use of symbolism,
positioning of figures, historical context, color usage, and many other elements, these three works of
art make an inspiring statement to the world.
The first painting, Stone Breakers by Gustave Courbet depicts two males that go to work breaking
stone and wearing torn and tattered clothing. This job was usually done by the lower classes of
society. At this time in France there was a rising of revolutionary thinking. The reason for the
sudden outbreak involved many factors, the ones portrayed in this painting are the demands of the
working classes. The figures are not arranged in the typical way. Both the young and the old males
are turned away from the viewer.

It should come as no surprise that Chagoya's style was heavily influenced by the late eighteenth
century artist. In his Met featurette, Chagoya mentions that he has a background in political
economy that has inspired him to add social commentary to his art. This inspiration original
stemmed from his love for Francisco Goya's art pieces, especially his series of sketches titled, Los
Caprichos. He mentions how Goya's art is like "a window to the world of the late 1700's" (Chagoya,
"The Artist Project"). What is so magical about these sketches though is that the sketches are not
representative of a specific time or place which allows the messages conveyed to still ring true. The
figures in his sketches are metaphorical and represent themes such as greed, vanity, and fear.
Chagoya believes that we are meant to see a piece of ourselves reflected in these figures but the dark
and humorous style of the sketches keep the message from damning us. His overall message in this

his work extended over a period of 60 years in which he was both very acclaimed, and badly
criticized. Francisco Goya, artist whose different paintings, drawings, and engravings reflected

Francisco Goya was born in March 30, 1749 in Zaragoza, Spain. At the age of 14 he was

specifically after being left permanently deaf by a serious illness in 1792. As a result of his deafness
he concentrated in the fantasies of his imagination, with critical and satirical observations of
mankind. He was attracted to meditation and introspection. He stops seeing society as a group of
good customs and starts thinking about its negative aspects as well. From these new ideas he
evolved a bold, free style similar to caricature. In 1799 he published Caprichos, a series of etchings

realism which was unprecedented in religious art. This series was not intended for the same group of

This painting represents the French taking over Spain during the time Napoleon was in reign. This invasion was a two day process but the painting is about what happened on the third of May. "Napoleon chose to invade Spain because he wanted to out his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in power in Spain to have an alliance with Spain to conquer Portugal" (Zappella, 2014).   • 13. Exploring Economic Status Vs. Painter's Actual Lifestyle This project involves the discovery and interpretation of paintings ranging from the mid 14th– century to the mid 18th–century. More importantly, the paintings are those which have a figure shown in a portrait type setting that are in the process of working or showing a task of their everyday life. I explore the use of light pertaining to the painters attitude and also the fine details to explore economic status vs the painter's actual lifestyle. Given that both artist had contrasting lifestyles, I believe the style reflected their personal life or current events as well. To help interpret this research, many paintings from five different artist were divided into folders and scientifically broken down and compared using a state of the art program. The final result of these images concluded that Johannes Vermeer and Francisco Jose de Goya, had opposite styles. Given the fact that Vermeer and Goya were artists of neighboring centuries, why are their styles different? This research implies that between the mid–16th century and the mid–18th century, portraits had a significant difference. The differences in artwork show that painting styles are directly related to events in the particular artist lifestyle. The first artist involved in this experiment is Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675).
