What Is Transcendentalism In Into The Wild
The transcendentalist philosopher Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "Most men even in this
comparatively free country, through mere ignorance and mistake, are so occupied with the facetious
cares and superfluously coarse labors of life that its finer fruits cannot be plucked by them." Thoreau
advocated simplifying life and the benefits of living in isolation from society in the wilderness to
"suck the marrow out of life". In the non–fiction book titled Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the
young man Chris McCandless' story is told. McCandless traveled to Alaska to experience the most
extreme transcendentalist existence foretold by Thoreau. While in Alaska he meet his end, and many
historians contemplate why he took this tremendous undertaking to ... Show more content on

Surviving alone in Alaska without the proper gear, and knowledge of the terrain, had proven fatal
for many; including McCandless. The native Alaskan Galien told him that he lacked adequate gear
and supplies to survive alone in the wilderness. He did not heed the advice of an experienced
Alaskan who hunted. This purposeful unpreparedness was a major contributor to his death. Another
instance of McCandless' disrespect for nature is that he was not knowledgeable about the terrain and
went, despite being inexperienced in surviving solo with minimal supplies in the frozen tundra of
Alaska. During his trip he successfully killed a moose, but wasted most of the meat by not knowing
how to properly preserve the meat to last him a longer period of time. If he respected nature it would
have been to his benefit to research the conditions in Alaska, to educate himself about the terrain,
and to practice survival skills before trying to live as minimally as

Remember Most Survival Situations Are: Stay Alive Until Help Arrives Staying alive until help
arrives or stay alive long enough so you can extract yourself from whatever situation in which you
find yourself. Self–rescue in other words. The point is, there is an end game, and it usually involves
others, and as much as you would like to think otherwise, you do need others, you will need help
when you get lost or stranded. If you are experienced in bushcraft, then you probably would never
be in a wilderness survival situation as most people understand it to be. Of course, you can become
lost, but no big deal right, you don't need anyone or anything, but you are in the minority. Most
people would need to be rescued or they just happen to live long enough to walk out themselves,
and this usually means they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You stay put and make your shelter before dark. Coming to the party prepared is important. Rescue
teams will find your point of entry and work from there, but if you start to aimlessly wander to and
fro, their job becomes harder, and your chance of survival lessens. If you can make a shelter and
build a fire, and have some water, you will survive. Even if you don't have much if any water with
you, it can be found in many cases or it may rain, or you may find a small pond, lake, or running
stream. You do have to prepare for the environment in which you find yourself. If you set out to
drive across the desert then you had better carry as much water as possible in your car. If you set out
to drive across frozen tundra, for example, then you had better have the warmest clothes possible.
Prepare based on your environment, and for those that say they may not know what geographical
area they may be traveling in have not done their homework, and they had better stay home for their
own safety and for the safety of those that may come

Rules And Order In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
Rules and order support a society by preventing it from becoming corrupted. Having organization
and structure is very important in order to maintain a successful and civilized community. During
the Cold War, a school for boys are sent out on a plane to avoid the atomic bombs. While being
transported to safety, the plane crashes and the boys become trapped on a mysterious island. After
the crash, the boys gather everyone together and elect a chief to lead the group. The two candidates
running for chief are Ralph, a rational and kind hearted boy, and Jack, a determined, arrogant, and
aggressive figure. One of the other boys known as Piggy helps Ralph to give him logical advice to
help the group of boys get rescued. It is their job to form a society ... Show more content on

After the plane crashes, Ralph and Piggy stumble upon a conch shell and use it to call an assembly
to gather all the boys up. When blown through, the conch creates a roaring blare that allows
everyone to hear it. This conch becomes the most important motif since it keeps the boys organized.
This conch is also used to create order among the boys to signify who has the right to talk, that way
everyone has a chance to be heard without being interrupted. This is apparent when Ralph says,
"'And another thing. We can't have everybody talking at once. We'll have to have 'Hands up' like at
school'... 'And he won't be interrupted. Except by me.' Jack was on his feet. 'We'll have rules!' he
cried excitedly. 'Lots of rules!'" (Golding 33). This rule associated with the conch helps the boys to
maintain a civilized structure by demanding the boys to give respect. Every time the conch is blown,
the boys gather and anytime anyone wants to speak during these assemblies, they hold the shell. By
instilling these 2 guidelines, all the boys have the opportunity to accept power and respect. To keep
control in the group, the boys decide to run their society similar to an autocracy. All the boys agree
electing a chief to lead the group will be the most effective way to stay organized and civilized until
they are rescued. This is evident when Jack says, "' We've got to decide about being rescued'...
'seems we ought to have a chief to decide things'"(22). By appointing a leader to guide the boys it
will keep the chaos contained and encourage the boys to remain cordial towards each other and
avoid barbaric behavior. Ralph and Jack both want the title of chief, however, when all the boys
vote, Ralph is the clear cut winner. Electing a leader and using the conch to summon the group
together are very important if the boys want to protect their civilized life

Survival Skills
Survival skills
Survival skills are techniques a person may use in a dangerous situation (e.g. natural disasters) to
save themselves or others (see also bushcraft). Generally speaking, these techniques are meant to
provide the basic necessities for human life: water, food, shelter, habitat, and the need to think
straight, to signal for help, to navigate safely, to avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and
plants, and for first aid. In addition, survival skills are often basic ideas and abilities that ancient
humans had to use for thousands of years, so these skills are partially a reenactment of history.
Many of these skills are the ways to enjoy extended periods of time in remote places, or a way to
thrive in nature. Some people use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recent thinking is that boiling or commercial filters are significantly safer than use of chemicals,
with the exception of chlorine dioxide.[6][7][8]
The issues presented by the need for water dictate that unnecessary water loss by perspiration be
avoided in survival situations.
To thus avoid these problems, culinary root tubers, fruit, edible mushrooms, edible nuts, edible
beans, edible cereals or edible leaves, edible moss, edible cacti and algae can be searched and if
needed, prepared (mostly by boiling). With the exception of leaves, these foods are relatively high in
calories, providing some energy to the body. Plants are some of the easiest food sources to find in
the jungle, forest or desert because they're stationary and can thus be had without exerting much
effort.[9]
Also, many commentators discuss the knowledge, skills, and equipment (such as bows, snares and
nets) necessary to gather animal food in the wild through animal trapping, hunting, fishing.
Some survival books promote the "Universal Edibility Test".[10] Allegedly, one can distinguish
edible foods from toxic ones by a series of progressive exposures to skin and mouth prior to
ingestion, with waiting periods and checks for symptoms. However, many other experts including
Ray Mears and John Kallas[11] reject this method, stating that even a small amount of some
"potential foods" can cause physical discomfort, illness, or death. An additional step called the

Duties and Responsibilities from the International...
Introduction
There are General duties and responsibilities of the competent authority
1. The competent authority should, on the basis of an assessment of safety and Health hazards and in
consultation with ship owners' and seafarers' organizations, adopt National laws or regulations to
ensure the safety and health of seafarers working on Ships. 2. A practical application of these
national laws or regulations should be provided through technical standards or codes of practice, or
by other appropriate methods. 3. in giving effect to 1 and 2 above, the competent authority should
have due regard to the relevant standards adopted by recognized international organizations in the
field of maritime safety. 4. The competent authority should ... Show more content on

For guidance on inspections in accordance with Convention No. 147, the ILO publication Inspection
of labour conditions on board ship: Guide–lines for procedure should be followed. In accordance
with Article 2 of Convention No. 134, the competent authority in each maritime country shall take
the necessary measures to ensure that occupational accidents are adequately reported and
investigated, and comprehensive statistics on such accidents kept and analyzed. Use may also be
made of the IMO/ILO Guidelines for the investigation of accidents where fatigue may have been a
contributing factor, where appropriate. See also the Labour Inspection (Seamen) Recommendation,
1926 (No. 28).Guidelines for the Authorization of Organizations Acting on Behalf of the
Administration, IMO Resolution A.739 (18), 1993, and subsequent related resolutions should be

Body
When considering the on–board application of the STCW Convention you must also consider the
requirements of the international safety management code (ISM) and the provisions within the ILO
maritime labour convention 2006 (MLC). Whilst the STCW applies to watch–keepers and crew with
environmental and security duties the MLC and ISM apply to the master, chief engineer, officers,
ratings and any other crew member on board ships of any tonnage, from a coaster to a very large

Speech On The Bag Of The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
Good morning/afternoon everyone, today I will be presenting my show–bag of Cormac McCarthy's
dystopian novel 'The Road'.
The Road is a post–apocalyptic tale of a tough, miserable journey of a father and his son heading
south through North America over a period of several months, across a landscape ruined by and
unknown cataclysm. This event has destroyed almost all of known civilisation to humans, save
various survivors and structures once known as cities.
The items I have brought in that are symbolic to the text is the following (pulling them out one by
one): A horseshoe (to represent luck and hope), a multi–tool (to represent survival), a Jar of ash (to
represent the lifelessness and landscape), a can of Coca Cola (to represent the past and the boy in the
novel) and finally a simple backpack (to represent a journey). The multi–tool is related to physical
aspects of a human because it gets the job done, for example the mini saw is used to cut branches off
trees, similar to how the human has hands to prepare food or put up a tent.
Firstly, the rusty Horseshoe, it used to go on a horse, obviously, but it can also be classified as a
lucky charm. Luck was one of the main characteristics that kept the man and the child alive, so they
thought. But relying on luck in a time like that wouldn't be the best of ideas, this is because most of
your survival comes with your skills and wits. However with luck comes hope, like how eating food
brings you enjoyment. Somehow surviving on

trail until he discovers a lake up ahead and begins setting up his tent and gathering some materials to
start a campfire just inside the forest near the lake. Just as Alex finished putting his tent up and
gathering enough sticks to keep a small fire going for a while the sun started to set. Alex then went
and filled up his canteen with water and went inside his tent for the night. Once inside his tent, Alex

unbearably cold, and Alex didn't have on near enough to keep him warm. Luckily he had a sleeping
bag that was decent enough to get him through the frigid temperatures of the night.
The following day, Alex woke up determined to find any sort of animal to hunt in the area. He hadn't
researched much about the area before coming here. He only had a map and didn't know what kind
of animals were around him. The only thing he could do was wander around in search of animals.
He had seen a few on his walk to the lake he found but was just trying to find a place to settle so he
just kept on walking. Mainly he just saw a few squirrels, but it gave him hope he could at least find
some source of food during his time in the park. He packed half of his ammo, the canteen, and his
knife in his bag to take with him on his hunt. He cooked up some of his another pound of his rice in
his thermos and ate it before leaving his campsite. After

Steps to Survival Essay
The Day in Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon is that one terrifying, unanticipated, and shocking day when
bombs drop on many large and important cities in the United States. This day puts many people into
situations that they are not used to. They must adapt to the world rather than try to live their regular
live which is now nonexistent. If one is sick, good luck getting medication; scared, good luck
finding food when the supply runs out. The mentally and physically strong survive and the weak die,
that is the rule of life. Randy Bragg was forced into a leading position because he knew that a leader

It is not only about going out and getting it but also about getting it fast. That is why in Pat Frank's
Alas, Babylon the group of survivors put together their gasoline and only drove the most fuel
efficient car. Ideas like this could help one survive until the nuclear war ends or until there is no
need to travel anymore. The only other physical preparation varies from a number of things that are
essential and sometimes overlooked by many. The most important steps to survival are those that are
instinct and essential. When the bombs are dropped there is not much time depending on how far
away the bomb is to prepare. Some basic things that most people do not think of like are "opening
windows and doors downstairs and filling up pails and bath tubs with water" (Frank 97). Any water
after the bombs would become radiated. This means once one run out of water in the pails and tubs,
one will need to find a way to make the radiated water drinkable, or find an alternate source of
water. In Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon, this alternate source was the "artesian water" which "smelled
like rotten eggs" but was better than no water at all (Frank 151). Another alternate source of water is
wells and water tanks, no contaminated water or particles have a chance to get into the water so it is
safe to drink (Kearny 71). Water is an essential item that many people take for granted in normal
life. Many

background, but you soon realize you 're all alone, scared, frightened you don 't know what to do.
You try to go back asleep, but you can 't the adrenaline of you just spraining your ankle from the
night before is running through your body, you begin to sweat and become thirsty what do you do?
There are many things that could happen in your dreams, but what if this happened in real life?
What if you were stuck on an island by yourself with no one to help, how would you survive, would
you? Water, its the most important thing in life, you need it for everything. After all, Earth is
covered with water, but 97.5% of it is saltwater, and the remaining 2.5% is fresh water (Holbrook).
According to "How Long Can You Live Without Water?," the human body is made of 65% water,
which means humans are especially vulnerable to dehydration, so if the conditions at room
temperature were right with no food, it is very possible you could last as long as 12 days in the the
right conditions, although a more likely estimate would be around 3–5 days without water ("How
Long"). So if you were stranded on an island your number one priority would be to locate water, but
what do you do if you can 't locate a freshwater lake or pond? There are many different techniques

success on the island could have been forever altered. In the long run, if they had used survival skills

Theme Of Two Old Women
Major Themes in Two Old Women
Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival is an Inuit legend, or a
story that has been passed down through many generations by word of mouth, and has been
popularly accepted as true. In this tale, two elderly women named Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' are left
behind by their tribe due to a brutal winter famine, but are determined to survive to prove their
capability and resourcefulness to themselves and their People. Over the course of about a year,
Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' use their hunting and survival skills, as well as determination and courage, to
withstand nature. In the end, the tribe comes back to find that the two old women are in better
condition than themselves, and learn that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two Old Women teaches us that betrayal is an act that can lead to great distrust, and is one that can
be tough to forgive.
The next theme found in this legend is the theme of courage. Courage is having a state of mind in
which a person is able to face struggles with confidence, and without fear. After being left in the
cold winter, the women must be very strong and courageous in order to survive. For example, Sa'
announces, "'They think that we are too old and useless. They forget that we, too, have earned the
right to live! So I say if we are going to die, my friend, let us die trying, not sitting'"(16). This quote
demonstrates the theme of courage because it shows that the two old women are determined to live
and survive, and they will not take pity on themselves. Instead, they choose to prove The People
wrong, and will "die trying, not sitting". Another example of courage found in Two Old Women is
when Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' build each other up in times of loneliness and fear, the first point in the
story when the two main characters really connect to each other. For example, the text states,
"Though food was scarce, warmth was their main concern, and at night they would sit and talk,
trying to keep each other from the loneliness and fears that threatened to overcome them...They
talked. And a sense of mutual respect developed as each

How To Recruit Boy Scouts
Young men, from ages 11 to 18, in the Boy Scouts of America have the option to experience a trip

certain scenarios with the skills and supplies they have in their sleds. The team with the most points
and as the quickest time wins the competition. These experiences prepare these young men for

the plane begins to go down, and he barely makes it to the lake which, in time, will become his

What to Do in Case of a Pandemia
There are many pandemics that could happen to most Americans. Such as Black outs, zombie

faster than normal. Even though one is calm cool and collective one still must move at a fast pace in
order to address the problem at hand. In a survival situation a person should not take any risk that is
not necessary or helpful to his well–being. If it is a large epidemic one should look for survivors
around him for help. Even though one might want to survive on his own it is better to survive as a
unit, and it will be more productive than doing it on his own[Dual Survival]. If one is assessing
others around he should ask what they are feeling then checks his breathing, and look for any visible

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis

disunity, violence, greed, and . We learn that when it comes to survival its kill or be killed. Jack,
Piggy, and Ralph each show survival skills and characteristics that can result in there downfall. Jack
is the muscle, Ralph is the skills, and Piggy is the brains. These characteristics appear to have been
able to create a great team, but Goulding has shown the readers that it just takes one to bring
destruction to all. Although they did have good qualities. They also had many bad qualities, some
more than others. So who would survive the island by themselves with just their good and bad
qualities? The one boy who would be able to survive the island all by himself is Ralph. Ralph is a 12

smart. He knows what is important and what needs to be done. He knows that he needs to keep the

will be proven through careful analysis of the uses of these items.

As previously stated the purification of this water is absolutely necessary for human survival. Now
there is more than one way that the water could be purified, but this is the simplest way to do it with
the least amount of materials. Now another thing that the skillet could be used for would be as a
weapon, to possibly immobilize a pig or other creature. The skillet could be taken in one hand, and
then the motion of beating the pig over the head could be used repeatedly, until the pig was either

shelter to a tree, which would make it much more secure in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Also if necessary, the entire shelter could be built in the tree. In that case the skillet could be used

The Importance Of Camping With Small Children
Many people think taking a toddler camping is just asking for stress, headaches and complications.
Actually, your toddler can learn a lot at a young age from a trip into nature. Camping with small
children can be an entertaining experience while giving them the basic skills of life.
–Surroundings
For toddlers, life is one huge learning experience. The simplest, most basic functions of the natural
world are fascinating and eye–opening to them. Camping provides the opportunity to teach your
toddlers about nature and observing their surroundings. While sitting around the campsite, imagine
your toddler spotting a leaf falling from a tree and the fascination in their eyes as it slowly floats to
the ground. This is an opportunity to teach them about the different trees, leaves, plants and shrubs
that surround them.
–Basic Survival Skills
Children are never too young to begin learning basic survival skills. Here 's one that can be taught in
the form of a game. Bring some marbles in a bag that the toddler can carry. Other items can be used
as well, but stick with non–edible ones for this lesson, or one of mother nature 's little creatures may
just eat your lesson materials. Start at the edge of your campsite and choose a path into the woods
that is easy enough for them to walk with you. Have your toddler place marbles on the ground every
couple of feet to leave a trail to follow back to your site. Dropping and re–discovering the marbles
will not only be a fun game, but will give

Trophy Hunting Research Paper
For ages hunting has been the crucial task to stay alive for mankind. Animals have provided many
necessities such as food, warmth, and tools. Their entire body was used; any fur was taken to make
hides and clothes, bones were used for weapons and tools, and the rest of the animal was used to eat.
Daily life for the hunter consisted of setting traps, using camouflage, and waiting until his desired
animal came by. Hunting back then consisted of long wooden sticks that were sharpened on the end
to be able to kill the prey. However, hunting to stay alive is extremely different than hunting for
sport. The earliest reason that is believed understood to hunt animals for sport was to show off skills
of rulers and their nobles. It was a sign of wealth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From North America, all the way to Africa, and everywhere in between has problems with animals
being hunted for recreational use. "In Tanzania, ~26% of the land surface area is set aside for trophy
hunting of wildlife; these 250000 [km.sup.2] are protected against land use conversion and represent
adequate habitat for large wildlife populations" (Kiffner). African lions are the major source of
income for these trophy hunters which is leading to a detrimental decrease of population in the
continent. These lions are set up and put in locations where hunters know they will be, and therefore
easier to hunt. Not only is trophy killing reducing numbers, but also causing problems in the animal
kingdom that humans do not realize. "The detrimental impact of shooting male lions on the entire
lion population is mainly a function of infanticide following pride take–over by new male lions"
(Kiffner). Male lions are the leaders of the pack and when they are killed, their animal kingdom can
also be disrupted adding to additional problems. There are so only so many male lions in a pride,
and trophy hunting is all revolved around killing the best beast you can find, and since there are so
few, the male dominance becomes out of sync. An extra problem that all stems from trophy killing
in the lion pride is when the new male lion does take over a pride he kills the cubs that belonged to
the previous leader. "Lions really are becoming more of an

Was Chris Mccandless Death A Foolish?
Was Chris McCandless death a foolish, pointless death due to his overconfidence and arrogance.
Yes, due to the fact he thought that he was able to live without anyone 's help to survive the great
outdoors. Plus, he only carried around a tiny amount of supplies with him at one time and
overestimated his survival skills Also, He was not ready for what was thrown in his path. Chris
followed his heart and danced to a different beat of the drum. McCrandless was not aware of the
dangers of the Alaskan frontier. He also did not have anyone who would come to his rescue if
something had endangered his life. Plenty of things led up to his death, but overconfidence was not
the major cause. It was not his intention to be overconfident and arrogant. I believe that he wanted to
actually live in the wild without depending on certain items but he also knew his limitations. He
brought a few supplies because he did not want to depend on most items. And he thought that he
would be able to live off the land. He should have expressed more humility and accepted help from
others. He acted as if nothing could kill him, which in turn killed him. He could have used someone
's help. If he wouldn 't accept help from his parents, then he should have at least accepted help from
Ron Franz. Also, he should have at least brought the right kind of clothing for the trip. What lead to
Chris 's death was his overconfidence and arrogance. He was incredibly unprepared for his journey

Now, if you chose to not bring the matches, survival will be difficult. Starting a fire with wood is
tough. Even the experts have trouble starting a fire with only wood. Now, imagine the weather is
rainy. Trying to find wood that is dry and keeping it dry is not going to be so easy i'd imagine.
Bringing a sword to the wild seems like a great idea, however, after carrying it for a couple miles
you might realize it wasn't so. What's the alternative? A mini sword, also known as a knife.
Extremely versatile and not very heavy. This knife will go a long ways in survival. You'll be able to
prepare meat to then cook and eat. It serves you as protection, if you were to get in a position where
you have to defend yourself from a monkey with rabies. When you need to make a shelter, a knife
will be super useful for cutting down branches, leaves, and plants. Also, the knives butt can serve as
a hammer. This'll help for shelter making. From a survival point of view, a small knife is essential.
However, maybe you think a small knife is not good enough for protection against all predators. I
agree, if a bear, lion, tiger, or a puma wanted to attack you; the chances of surviving the attack are
much higher with a sword. Nonetheless, the chances of being attacked by a fierce predator are very
low. That would be the lesser of worries. In this setting, weather is more dangerous. If you wanted to

Wilderness Therapy : An Alternative Therapy
Wilderness Therapy The wilderness is a place known for peacefulness and can have physical and
psychological benefits (Hassell, Moore & Macbeth, 2015). Wilderness therapy is an alternative
therapy, influenced by Outward Bound, which is an outdoor education company with programs for
youth and adults. (Hoag, Massey, Roberts, & Logan, 2013). Wilderness therapy combines group
work, reflection, challenges and trust building exercises, varied length, and clinical assessment
(Russell, 2001). Wilderness therapy should be therapeutic based, and by integrating a balance
between a nurturing safe environment with an environment where the participants try new things
and challenge themselves (Russell, 2001). The best way for wilderness therapy to be effective is
using nature as a healer and a challenger, using eclectic therapy such as cognitive behavioral and
experiential, alone time to reflect and challenges to complete solo, learning communication skills,
and having steps to complete or rites of passage (Russell, Hendee, & Phillips–Miller (2000). These
different aspects of wilderness therapy will help to aid patients' in following three phases (Russell et
al., 2000). The first phase is the cleansing phase and involves promoting a healthy diet and exercise,
removing any toxins such as drugs and alcohol from a patients life and system, and ridding the

Some like to disagree for the sake of disagreement, which does not move the discussion forward.

Les is not afraid to show us that he failed, because he knows we might very well fail at the first,
second and even third attempts at starting a fire with a bow and drill. We may not ever get a fire
started in some cases, with just a bow and drill. It takes practice, patience and the right conditions
and sometimes despite our best efforts we fail.
All the shows cover the most elaborate down to the simplistic, and in most cases when it comes to
survival, simple and uncomplicated is better. Dave Canterbury one time showed us how to
pasteurize water in a snake skin, (a Python skin?) turned inside out, while it was hung over a fire.
This is nice to know, but really do you ever expect you would ever do this. It is almost like saying "I
need to know how to hang wall paper with one hand tied behind my back just in case the need ever
arises". Maybe not that extreme, but the point is, do not get caught up in trying to learn the
complicated and elaborate ways of doing things when there are much simpler ways that would get
the job done while you are under stress.

Social Justice In To Kill A Mockingbird
Social Justice, defined by the Oxford Dictionary, is "Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth,
opportunities and privileges within a society." The human survival and the progression of society,
heavily relies on the ability to stand up for the rights and freedoms of others– being an advocate for
change and an advocate for social justice. This essay with primarily discus Social Justice through
advocacy and younger generations perceptions of the world, focusing on the text 'To Kill A
Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and the pocket film 'And So It Should Be' by Tara Campbell. Overall,
exploring the theme of how social justice is essential to human survival and the progression of
society.
The perception in the text 'To Kill A Mockingbird' of hate being a natural emotion– is constantly
challenged to provide the side of that hate is taught, rather than natural. The use of Lee's high
modality, use of a metaphor in the quote "As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men
every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it–whenever a white man
does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from,
that white man is trash", explores this notion. This quote breaks the stigma of that, the majority, in
this particular text– the 'white' society, are always considered to be the higher class and able to get
away with whatever they please just because of their race being considered 'better' than another. At
the point in the text, Atticus stands up for what is right, not what is expected of him– to blame and
judge Tom Radley, as the rest of the town does. It sets him aside from others and causes people to
step back from themselves and their beliefs for a moment, to challenge whether they are biased
opinions and actions on a topic. Harper uses this moment to bring into the spotlight how actions may
not change, and social injustice may still occur– however, the person/ people causing it need to be
called out for it. This evidently displays the progression of society through social justice.
In addition to this, the idea is discussed further in the pocket film 'And So It Should Be' composed
by Tara Campbell. Through the use of repetition, person

Persuasive Essay On Survival
For the final, one of the questions Professor Gutierrez noted that students could select to write about
was, "What would be a good final essay prompt? Why? What would it reveal about students who
write a response to it" (1)? There are several topics I thought would be interesting topics to write
about as a final. One of the original items I thought writing about was, If you had only one week to
live, what would you do and why? In fact, I even started to write about that topic, and then I thought
of another one that is something that people who camp, have to think about often. There are a lot of
survivalist shows on television so it fitted to want to ask, If you could only bring one item with you
to a remote location, what would that one item be and why? As the professor reading the responses
from the students of what they would write would open up my mind, in fact, it would be a good
topic to post in the threads, and there could even be a debate as to which one is the best item for
survival. Campers have prepared for the worst case scenarios and hope for the best trip, but that
does not always happen. For the students who would choose to select the topic to write about would
be the students who have a sense of adventure, probably enjoy being in the outdoors. They may also
have a strong type a personality because trying to convince anyone about only one item and that one
item may not be what they chose, could pose to be a challenge. With shows on television like

Camping Tent Disadvantages
The availability of secure campsites close to major cities is increasingly attracting families wishing
to take a camping tent vacation without heading out to the jungle. For someone who has never been
out camping, the toughest question is where to experience their first camping tent trip. Starting off in
low risk well supplied areas not too far from home is usually the safest option. Increasing gasoline
and airlines charges are squeezing families struggling to make it through the tough economic times
and forcing them to embrace camping tent alternatives. With high quality family tents retailing at
under $200, a whole family of up to 6 people can enjoy a camping tent extended weekend for under
$100 close to urban centers. What are some of things a first time camper needs to know in choosing
their first tent?
Type and Size
With many types of tents available, choosing the right one can be mind boggling. If you are looking
for a tent to use for many years and do not plan on going camping in winter, then a three season tent
is all you need. Dome family tents are preferable because they have more space and headroom.
When it comes to deciding the size, if you are not going backpacking in the wilderness where the
weight of the tent is a major consideration, always go for a tent that will take more people than the
quoted size. Manufacturers usually overstate the amount of people that can comfortably sleep in a
tent. The rule of thumb is to select a tent that will sleep 1–2 people

Ethnography Report: The Eskimo, People of the Seal
Introduction:
The Netsilik are an indigenous community that are descendants of the Thule culture, they reside
North of Hudson Bay, just above the Arctic circle. They call themselves the Netsilik or "people of
the seal" because of their unusual diet (Young, 1970). In his video Young states that, "The winter
months for the Netsilik people starts in September and last right up until June, during these months
the temperatures can range anywhere from 30–50 degrees below 0" (1970). During the 2–3 months
of warmer weather, "the summer tundra remains wet, since permafrost not far below the surface
prevents drainage" (Netsilik, n.d). This causes the Netsilik to migrate frequently.
Their first encounter of non–natives was in 1890, a meeting that was brief but would provoke
further meetings until the twentieth century. Interaction with other civilizations would only prove to
advance their own, for neighboring communities like the Iglulik introduced them to more advanced
weaponry like the rifle which eventually replaced their standard harpoon; thus making hunting much
easier. Later on in 1920, trading posts were established, this completely changed their economy, for

Analysis Of The Movie The Martian
Throughout the movie, "The Martian," the story revolves around the main character, Mark Watney,
who has to survive alone on a Mars by utilizing his skills in botany, as well as other subjects. Mark
faces multiple problems throughout the movie, that make his survival extremly hard. Other than
botany, there were many other sciences used by Watney to survive on Mars. , including physics. An
example of this is when making a battery last longer on the rover, he removes the battery in order to
make the rover lighter, and he removed weight from the shuttle that was used to escape the planet.
Watney uses medical science (when he had to remove the piece of shrapnel and staple his wound.
Other problems included the lack of food, having the HAB (the headquarters for the mission), and
having to travel a large distance in a rover that was meant to only go a short distance. The first
problem he faced was not having enough food to survive until he could be rescued. Luckily, he had
a large amount of food for the crew that was left in the HAB. He calculates how long he could make
the rations last but comes to the conclusion that he will still not have enough food to last him until
the next manned mission to Mars. Mark rationalizes that through his botany skills he might be able
to grow food inside the HAB; he settles on potatoes. . He then uses his human waste, mixed with
water and Martian soil, to make soil suitable for growing potatoes. The next step of growing
potatoes was finding

Pros And Cons Of Bug Out Bag
Bug Out Bag Debate: Tarp or Tent for Emergency Shelter
A bug–out–bag is designed for emergencies, so some inconvenience is to be expected.
When on a family outing you can carry a six or eight person cabin tent in the back of your vehicle.
Weight is not a large factor when you can pack your supplies in the cargo space of an SUV or
pickup.
When packing supplies on your back however, weight can be a deciding factor. What you think you
can carry on your back, and what you can actually carry, are two different things. Twenty minutes
hiking up and down the sidewalk with 30 to 50 pounds strapped on does not mean you can perform
the same way physically while in a crisis when walking over rough and uneven terrain for hours at a
time.
Tents
Most backpacking tents are designed for 1 to 2 people. A one person tent allows approximately 15
square feet of sleeping space. Keep in mind you will have gear as well, so it will be cramped. The
weight can be anywhere from 3 to 6 pounds depending on the model and actual size. ... Show more

My Boy Scout : My Personal Experience Of Boy Scouts
I got involved in the Boy Scouts when I was in the 5th grade–until then, I was deemed "too short"
and as such, put off that dream for some time. Nevertheless, I persisted–I was greeted by welcoming
faces and assigned to a new den. At this point, my commitments were small– with the occasional
den meeting to attend and skit to perform. My den chief, Mr.Binnig was invaluable during the initial
learning "curve", from earning my belt loops to archery practice–I gained the skills I needed to
succeed at the next level. After about a year in Cub Scouts, it was time to "bridge" from a Pack to a
Troop–for me Troop 451 would be my new home.
The first six months of Boy Scouts were dedicated to developing a leadership mindset in young
men–with rigorous exercise and survival training. I remember running around the church during the
first meeting, doing situps and pushups until I couldn't breathe and doing pull ups until my arms felt
heavy. During those six months, however, we were also taught more advanced survival skills,
advanced first aid training and leadership skills. After the basic training was completed, we were
assigned to patrols, each with six boys–it was our first campout where my patrol encountered our
first challenge. We were assigned campfire duty–which meant collecting firewood and creating a
pile about ten feet tall before the day was over. After scrounging around for about an hour, we were
struggling to find any large amount of wood, but after looking around some more,

Fire In Lord Of The Flies Essay
"Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness." –Desmond Tutu. The Lord
Of The Flies is about young boys from a range of 6–12 on a plane during WW2 and the plane gets
shot done and they get stuck on an island by themselves. With the boys being so young they are
afraid of "The Beast". Some boys try to assemble to try to survive on this island. In The Lord Of The

in the book he also uses the conch shell in the book. The last symbol he uses in the book is the

The fire in this book is a reoccurring symbol often times in this novel the fire shows something
greater than what it actually is. An example is in this book the some if the boys are focused on trying

finally goes by and is in distance of being able to see them if the fire is up it goes out. All of the

Religion is a major theme in the life of Pi. Pi becomes a Christian, and a Muslim throughout his

immense love he has for god. However, Pi's strong faith in god becomes much less prominent when
he's on the lifeboat with the animals. In other words, his physical needs take over and dominate over
his religious ones. He still worships his gods, however is occasionally. Whenever he finds a fish or
any source of food, he thanks his gods. For example when he reached the carnivorous island, he
thanked god like crazy(page 233). However, he later discovered that it was a man eating island. I
think the author included this to show that Pi is continuing to lose his faith in god, and after this
discovery he has lost even more confidence in god. This shows signs of doubt in Pi's mind, he
doesn't understand what he should thank god for. Does this mean he completely lost his faith in god,
not necessarily. He could still have a little bit of faith left in god, but we can be sure that it's not as

What Is Transcendentalism In Into The Wild

  • 1. What Is Transcendentalism In Into The Wild The transcendentalist philosopher Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "Most men even in this comparatively free country, through mere ignorance and mistake, are so occupied with the facetious cares and superfluously coarse labors of life that its finer fruits cannot be plucked by them." Thoreau advocated simplifying life and the benefits of living in isolation from society in the wilderness to "suck the marrow out of life". In the non–fiction book titled Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, the young man Chris McCandless' story is told. McCandless traveled to Alaska to experience the most extreme transcendentalist existence foretold by Thoreau. While in Alaska he meet his end, and many historians contemplate why he took this tremendous undertaking to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surviving alone in Alaska without the proper gear, and knowledge of the terrain, had proven fatal for many; including McCandless. The native Alaskan Galien told him that he lacked adequate gear and supplies to survive alone in the wilderness. He did not heed the advice of an experienced Alaskan who hunted. This purposeful unpreparedness was a major contributor to his death. Another instance of McCandless' disrespect for nature is that he was not knowledgeable about the terrain and went, despite being inexperienced in surviving solo with minimal supplies in the frozen tundra of Alaska. During his trip he successfully killed a moose, but wasted most of the meat by not knowing how to properly preserve the meat to last him a longer period of time. If he respected nature it would have been to his benefit to research the conditions in Alaska, to educate himself about the terrain, and to practice survival skills before trying to live as minimally as ... Remember Most Survival Situations Are: Stay Alive Until Help Arrives Staying alive until help arrives or stay alive long enough so you can extract yourself from whatever situation in which you find yourself. Self–rescue in other words. The point is, there is an end game, and it usually involves others, and as much as you would like to think otherwise, you do need others, you will need help when you get lost or stranded. If you are experienced in bushcraft, then you probably would never be in a wilderness survival situation as most people understand it to be. Of course, you can become lost, but no big deal right, you don't need anyone or anything, but you are in the minority. Most people would need to be rescued or they just happen to live long enough to walk out themselves, and this usually means they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You stay put and make your shelter before dark. Coming to the party prepared is important. Rescue teams will find your point of entry and work from there, but if you start to aimlessly wander to and fro, their job becomes harder, and your chance of survival lessens. If you can make a shelter and build a fire, and have some water, you will survive. Even if you don't have much if any water with you, it can be found in many cases or it may rain, or you may find a small pond, lake, or running stream. You do have to prepare for the environment in which you find yourself. If you set out to drive across the desert then you had better carry as much water as possible in your car. If you set out to drive across frozen tundra, for example, then you had better have the warmest clothes possible. Prepare based on your environment, and for those that say they may not know what geographical area they may be traveling in have not done their homework, and they had better stay home for their own safety and for the safety of those that may come ... • 5. Rules And Order In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies Rules and order support a society by preventing it from becoming corrupted. Having organization and structure is very important in order to maintain a successful and civilized community. During the Cold War, a school for boys are sent out on a plane to avoid the atomic bombs. While being transported to safety, the plane crashes and the boys become trapped on a mysterious island. After the crash, the boys gather everyone together and elect a chief to lead the group. The two candidates running for chief are Ralph, a rational and kind hearted boy, and Jack, a determined, arrogant, and aggressive figure. One of the other boys known as Piggy helps Ralph to give him logical advice to help the group of boys get rescued. It is their job to form a society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the plane crashes, Ralph and Piggy stumble upon a conch shell and use it to call an assembly to gather all the boys up. When blown through, the conch creates a roaring blare that allows everyone to hear it. This conch becomes the most important motif since it keeps the boys organized. This conch is also used to create order among the boys to signify who has the right to talk, that way everyone has a chance to be heard without being interrupted. This is apparent when Ralph says, "'And another thing. We can't have everybody talking at once. We'll have to have 'Hands up' like at school'... 'And he won't be interrupted. Except by me.' Jack was on his feet. 'We'll have rules!' he cried excitedly. 'Lots of rules!'" (Golding 33). This rule associated with the conch helps the boys to maintain a civilized structure by demanding the boys to give respect. Every time the conch is blown, the boys gather and anytime anyone wants to speak during these assemblies, they hold the shell. By instilling these 2 guidelines, all the boys have the opportunity to accept power and respect. To keep control in the group, the boys decide to run their society similar to an autocracy. All the boys agree electing a chief to lead the group will be the most effective way to stay organized and civilized until they are rescued. This is evident when Jack says, "' We've got to decide about being rescued'... 'seems we ought to have a chief to decide things'"(22). By appointing a leader to guide the boys it will keep the chaos contained and encourage the boys to remain cordial towards each other and avoid barbaric behavior. Ralph and Jack both want the title of chief, however, when all the boys vote, Ralph is the clear cut winner. Electing a leader and using the conch to summon the group together are very important if the boys want to protect their civilized life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Survival Skills Survival skills Survival skills are techniques a person may use in a dangerous situation (e.g. natural disasters) to save themselves or others (see also bushcraft). Generally speaking, these techniques are meant to provide the basic necessities for human life: water, food, shelter, habitat, and the need to think straight, to signal for help, to navigate safely, to avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and plants, and for first aid. In addition, survival skills are often basic ideas and abilities that ancient humans had to use for thousands of years, so these skills are partially a reenactment of history. Many of these skills are the ways to enjoy extended periods of time in remote places, or a way to thrive in nature. Some people use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recent thinking is that boiling or commercial filters are significantly safer than use of chemicals, with the exception of chlorine dioxide.[6][7][8] The issues presented by the need for water dictate that unnecessary water loss by perspiration be avoided in survival situations. To thus avoid these problems, culinary root tubers, fruit, edible mushrooms, edible nuts, edible beans, edible cereals or edible leaves, edible moss, edible cacti and algae can be searched and if needed, prepared (mostly by boiling). With the exception of leaves, these foods are relatively high in calories, providing some energy to the body. Plants are some of the easiest food sources to find in the jungle, forest or desert because they're stationary and can thus be had without exerting much effort.[9] Also, many commentators discuss the knowledge, skills, and equipment (such as bows, snares and nets) necessary to gather animal food in the wild through animal trapping, hunting, fishing. Some survival books promote the "Universal Edibility Test".[10] Allegedly, one can distinguish edible foods from toxic ones by a series of progressive exposures to skin and mouth prior to ingestion, with waiting periods and checks for symptoms. However, many other experts including Ray Mears and John Kallas[11] reject this method, stating that even a small amount of some "potential foods" can cause physical discomfort, illness, or death. • 11. Speech On The Bag Of The Road By Cormac Mccarthy Good morning/afternoon everyone, today I will be presenting my show–bag of Cormac McCarthy's dystopian novel 'The Road'. The Road is a post–apocalyptic tale of a tough, miserable journey of a father and his son heading south through North America over a period of several months, across a landscape ruined by and unknown cataclysm. This event has destroyed almost all of known civilisation to humans, save various survivors and structures once known as cities. The items I have brought in that are symbolic to the text is the following (pulling them out one by one): A horseshoe (to represent luck and hope), a multi–tool (to represent survival), a Jar of ash (to represent the lifelessness and landscape), a can of Coca Cola (to represent the past and the boy in the novel) and finally a simple backpack (to represent a journey). The multi–tool is related to physical aspects of a human because it gets the job done, for example the mini saw is used to cut branches off trees, similar to how the human has hands to prepare food or put up a tent. Firstly, the rusty Horseshoe, it used to go on a horse, obviously, but it can also be classified as a lucky charm. Luck was one of the main characteristics that kept the man and the child alive, so they thought. But relying on luck in a time like that wouldn't be the best of ideas, this is because most of your survival comes with your skills and wits. However with luck comes hope, like how eating food brings you enjoyment. Somehow surviving on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not wanting to encounter any people, Alex ventures away from the trail until he discovers a lake up ahead and begins setting up his tent and gathering some materials to start a campfire just inside the forest near the lake. Just as Alex finished putting his tent up and gathering enough sticks to keep a small fire going for a while the sun started to set. Alex then went and filled up his canteen with water and went inside his tent for the night. To solve his problem he decided to go ahead and eat about a pound of his rice uncooked, unaware that this could possibly cause food poisoning. After Alex is finished eating, the sun sets. It was unbearably cold, and Alex didn't have on near enough to keep him warm. Luckily he had a sleeping bag that was decent enough to get him through the frigid temperatures of the night. The following day, Alex woke up determined to find any sort of animal to hunt in the area. He hadn't researched much about the area before coming here. He only had a map and didn't know what kind of animals were around him. The only thing he could do was wander around in search of animals. He had seen a few on his walk to the lake he found but was just trying to find a place to settle so he just kept on walking. Mainly he just saw a few squirrels, but it gave him hope he could at least find some source of food during his time in the park. He packed half of his ammo, the canteen, and his knife in his bag to take with him on his hunt. He cooked up some of his another pound of his rice in his thermos and ate it before leaving his campsite. After ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The only other physical preparation varies from a number of things that are essential and sometimes overlooked by many. The most important steps to survival are those that are instinct and essential. When the bombs are dropped there is not much time depending on how far away the bomb is to prepare. Some basic things that most people do not think of like are "opening windows and doors downstairs and filling up pails and bath tubs with water" (Frank 97). Any water after the bombs would become radiated. This means once one run out of water in the pails and tubs, one will need to find a way to make the radiated water drinkable, or find an alternate source of water. In Pat Frank's Alas, Babylon, this alternate source was the "artesian water" which "smelled like rotten eggs" but was better than no water at all (Frank 151). Another alternate source of water is wells and water tanks, no contaminated water or particles have a chance to get into the water so it is safe to drink (Kearny 71). Theme Of Two Old Women Major Themes in Two Old Women Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival is an Inuit legend, or a story that has been passed down through many generations by word of mouth, and has been popularly accepted as true. Two Old Women teaches us that betrayal is an act that can lead to great distrust, and is one that can be tough to forgive. The next theme found in this legend is the theme of courage. Courage is having a state of mind in which a person is able to face struggles with confidence, and without fear. After being left in the cold winter, the women must be very strong and courageous in order to survive. For example, Sa' announces, "'They think that we are too old and useless. They forget that we, too, have earned the right to live! So I say if we are going to die, my friend, let us die trying, not sitting'"(16). This quote demonstrates the theme of courage because it shows that the two old women are determined to live and survive, and they will not take pity on themselves. Instead, they choose to prove The People wrong, and will "die trying, not sitting". Another example of courage found in Two Old Women is when Ch'idzigyaak and Sa' build each other up in times of loneliness and fear, the first point in the story when the two main characters really connect to each other. For example, the text states, "Though food was scarce, warmth was their main concern, and at night they would sit and talk, trying to keep each other from the loneliness and fears that threatened to overcome them...They talked. The skillet could be taken in one hand, and then the motion of beating the pig over the head could be used repeatedly, until the pig was either dead or unconscious. Then if the pig was not dead the beating motion could be continued with this or other weapons until it is sure that he is dead. A good sign to make sure he's dead is when there is no heart beat, as well as severe infractions or fissures in his head. The human survival and the progression of society, heavily relies on the ability to stand up for the rights and freedoms of others– being an advocate for change and an advocate for social justice. This essay with primarily discus Social Justice through advocacy and younger generations perceptions of the world, focusing on the text 'To Kill A Mockingbird' by Harper Lee and the pocket film 'And So It Should Be' by Tara Campbell. Overall, exploring the theme of how social justice is essential to human survival and the progression of society. The perception in the text 'To Kill A Mockingbird' of hate being a natural emotion– is constantly challenged to provide the side of that hate is taught, rather than natural. The use of Lee's high modality, use of a metaphor in the quote "As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it–whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash", explores this notion. This quote breaks the stigma of that, the majority, in this particular text– the 'white' society, are always considered to be the higher class and able to get away with whatever they please just because of their race being considered 'better' than another. At the point in the text, Atticus stands up for what is right, not what is expected of him– to blame and judge Tom Radley, as the rest of the town does. It sets him aside from others and causes people to step back from themselves and their beliefs for a moment, to challenge whether they are biased opinions and actions on a topic. Harper uses this moment to bring into the spotlight how actions may not change, and social injustice may still occur– however, the person/ people causing it need to be called out for it. This evidently displays the progression of society through social justice. In addition to this, the idea is discussed further in the pocket film 'And So It Should Be' composed by Tara Campbell. What would it reveal about students who write a response to it" (1)? There are several topics I thought would be interesting topics to write about as a final. One of the original items I thought writing about was, If you had only one week to live, what would you do and why? In fact, I even started to write about that topic, and then I thought of another one that is something that people who camp, have to think about often. There are a lot of survivalist shows on television so it fitted to want to ask, If you could only bring one item with you to a remote location, what would that one item be and why? As the professor reading the responses from the students of what they would write would open up my mind, in fact, it would be a good topic to post in the threads, and there could even be a debate as to which one is the best item for survival. Campers have prepared for the worst case scenarios and hope for the best trip, but that does not always happen. For the students who would choose to select the topic to write about would be the students who have a sense of adventure, probably enjoy being in the outdoors. They may also have a strong type a personality because trying to convince anyone about only one item and that one item may not be what they chose, could pose to be a challenge. • 55. Camping Tent Disadvantages The availability of secure campsites close to major cities is increasingly attracting families wishing to take a camping tent vacation without heading out to the jungle. For someone who has never been out camping, the toughest question is where to experience their first camping tent trip. Starting off in low risk well supplied areas not too far from home is usually the safest option. Increasing gasoline and airlines charges are squeezing families struggling to make it through the tough economic times and forcing them to embrace camping tent alternatives. With high quality family tents retailing at under $200, a whole family of up to 6 people can enjoy a camping tent extended weekend for under $100 close to urban centers. What are some of things a first time camper needs to know in choosing their first tent? Type and Size With many types of tents available, choosing the right one can be mind boggling. If you are looking for a tent to use for many years and do not plan on going camping in winter, then a three season tent is all you need. Dome family tents are preferable because they have more space and headroom. When it comes to deciding the size, if you are not going backpacking in the wilderness where the weight of the tent is a major consideration, always go for a tent that will take more people than the quoted size. Manufacturers usually overstate the amount of people that can comfortably sleep in a tent. The rule of thumb is to select a tent that will sleep 1–2 people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So, if you think about taking two credits of classroom based time and putting into a series of video lectures and independent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then you'll see, from there the modules begin. Module 1 is an introduction to survival. It's the background information, statistics, theory, physiology and anatomy, all the kind of softer, academic side of this course. From there, the beginning of module 2, we dive into harder skills. So module 2 focuses around your immediate priorities in a survival situation. Following that is module 3, short term survival skills. Then, schedule wise, we'll be heading out on to the overnight after that and getting into module 4, long term survival skills, most of that will be handled out there during that 3 day scenario. And then when we come back after the field portion, module 5 is a wrap up and reflection, I'll ask you to reflect on your experiences, what you still need to learn, what you did well, and asking you to put together a survival kit at that time. Lets take a look at the syllabus together. At the top, you'll see a description and course ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Ethnography Report : Eskimo, People Of The Seal Ethnography Report: The Eskimo, People of the Seal Introduction: The Netsilik are an indigenous community that are descendants of the Thule culture, they reside North of Hudson Bay, just above the Arctic circle. They call themselves the Netsilik or "people of the seal" because of their unusual diet (Young, 1970). In his video Young states that, "The winter months for the Netsilik people starts in September and last right up until June, during these months the temperatures can range anywhere from 30–50 degrees below 0" (1970). During the 2–3 months of warmer weather, "the summer tundra remains wet, since permafrost not far below the surface prevents drainage" (Netsilik, n.d). This causes the Netsilik to migrate frequently. Their first encounter of non–natives was in 1890, a meeting that was brief but would provoke further meetings until the twentieth century. Interaction with other civilizations would only prove to advance their own, for neighboring communities like the Iglulik introduced them to more advanced weaponry like the rifle which eventually replaced their standard harpoon; thus making hunting much easier. Later on in 1920, trading posts were established, this completely changed their economy, for instead of white fox fur trapping and trade, the Netsilik now would trade for additional items made by non–natives, including woolen clothing, tobacco, steel traps, fishing nets, canoes, tea, and canvas tents (Netsilik, n.d). • 61. Analysis Of The Movie The Martian Throughout the movie, "The Martian," the story revolves around the main character, Mark Watney, who has to survive alone on a Mars by utilizing his skills in botany, as well as other subjects. Mark faces multiple problems throughout the movie, that make his survival extremly hard. Other than botany, there were many other sciences used by Watney to survive on Mars. , including physics. An example of this is when making a battery last longer on the rover, he removes the battery in order to make the rover lighter, and he removed weight from the shuttle that was used to escape the planet. Watney uses medical science (when he had to remove the piece of shrapnel and staple his wound. Other problems included the lack of food, having the HAB (the headquarters for the mission), and having to travel a large distance in a rover that was meant to only go a short distance. The first problem he faced was not having enough food to survive until he could be rescued. Luckily, he had a large amount of food for the crew that was left in the HAB. He calculates how long he could make the rations last but comes to the conclusion that he will still not have enough food to last him until the next manned mission to Mars. Mark rationalizes that through his botany skills he might be able to grow food inside the HAB; he settles on potatoes. . He then uses his human waste, mixed with water and Martian soil, to make soil suitable for growing potatoes. The next step of growing potatoes was finding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Pros And Cons Of Bug Out Bag Bug Out Bag Debate: Tarp or Tent for Emergency Shelter A bug–out–bag is designed for emergencies, so some inconvenience is to be expected. When on a family outing you can carry a six or eight person cabin tent in the back of your vehicle. Weight is not a large factor when you can pack your supplies in the cargo space of an SUV or pickup. When packing supplies on your back however, weight can be a deciding factor. What you think you can carry on your back, and what you can actually carry, are two different things. Twenty minutes hiking up and down the sidewalk with 30 to 50 pounds strapped on does not mean you can perform the same way physically while in a crisis when walking over rough and uneven terrain for hours at a time. Tents Most backpacking tents are designed for 1 to 2 people. A one person tent allows approximately 15 square feet of sleeping space. Keep in mind you will have gear as well, so it will be cramped. The weight can be anywhere from 3 to 6 pounds depending on the model and actual size. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 65. My Boy Scout : My Personal Experience Of Boy Scouts I got involved in the Boy Scouts when I was in the 5th grade–until then, I was deemed "too short" and as such, put off that dream for some time. Nevertheless, I persisted–I was greeted by welcoming faces and assigned to a new den. At this point, my commitments were small– with the occasional den meeting to attend and skit to perform. My den chief, Mr.Binnig was invaluable during the initial learning "curve", from earning my belt loops to archery practice–I gained the skills I needed to succeed at the next level. After about a year in Cub Scouts, it was time to "bridge" from a Pack to a Troop–for me Troop 451 would be my new home. The first six months of Boy Scouts were dedicated to developing a leadership mindset in young men–with rigorous exercise and survival training. I remember running around the church during the first meeting, doing situps and pushups until I couldn't breathe and doing pull ups until my arms felt heavy. During those six months, however, we were also taught more advanced survival skills, advanced first aid training and leadership skills. After the basic training was completed, we were assigned to patrols, each with six boys–it was our first campout where my patrol encountered our first challenge. We were assigned campfire duty–which meant collecting firewood and creating a pile about ten feet tall before the day was over. After scrounging around for about an hour, we were struggling to find any large amount of wood, but after looking around some more, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although there are a bunch symbols in the book the first one is the fire. The fire in this book is a reoccurring symbol often times in this novel the fire shows something greater than what it actually is. Staying true to yourself can be a very difficult thing, most people can't do it, especially under pressure. After the journey is over, Pi's barely the same person he once was. Religion is a major theme in the life of Pi. Pi becomes a Christian, and a Muslim throughout his childhood, and was born a Hindu. Being able to love thee rather different religions at once shows the immense love he has for god. However, Pi's strong faith in god becomes much less prominent when he's on the lifeboat with the animals. In other words, his physical needs take over and dominate over his religious ones. He still worships his gods, however is occasionally. Whenever he finds a fish or any source of food, he thanks his gods. For example when he reached the carnivorous island, he thanked god like crazy(page 233). However, he later discovered that it was a man eating island. I think the author included this to show that Pi is continuing to lose his faith in god, and after this discovery he has lost even more confidence in god. This shows signs of doubt in Pi's mind, he doesn't understand what he should thank god for. Does this mean he completely lost his faith in god, not necessarily. He could still have a little bit of faith left in god, but we can be sure that it's not as strong as it once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
