April 2012 newsletter
1. April 2012 Newsletter
April showers bring May flowers. This month we welcome Robin back from Florida and look forward to
some great weather to explore outside. It’s also a busy month filled with swimming, spring pictures, and field
trips. Please make sure you mark your calendar with the “upcoming dates” listed below so you don’t miss out on
any of our activities. Also, I have a few reminders as we head into warmer weather:
• Please make sure your child has extra clothes that go with our warmer weather. For example,
short-sleeved shirts, shorts, etc.
• Part-time families no longer receive vacation credits. Please remember you will need to pay
for the weeks your child is out as you plan your vacations.
• We have been having many late pick-ups lately and it’s causing our teachers to clock out
late. Please show KELC Teachers that you respect their time by picking your child up
on time and not after 5:30pm, as they have responsibilities outside of Kendal with their
families as well. The late pick-up policy will be enforced for all families who pick up after
5:30 pm. Our policy is $1 per minute after 5:30pm.
Have a great month! Jeni

Intergenerational News
The Birds love the time they spend with their “grandfriends.” They love hitting balloons back and forth with the
residents. The children also enjoy visiting their grandfriends in their Care Center rooms, and they like bringing
books to show them. Sometimes the grandfriend will read to them, and sometimes they will ask the children to
read the story to them. The children love seeing all the things in the grandfriends’ rooms and
ask them lots of questions about all the things they see.
The Giraffes have also been enjoying their time with the residents. We have been
going down to the Care Center to visit residents in their rooms. Both the children and residents
love this. On Thursdays some children go to a planned activity with their residents, and
then a few go to the Jameson Lounge to talk with residents there.
2. Bird Tweets:
March has sure has flown by! We cannot believe that it is already
April! March has brought in a lot of changes. The weather has been
awesome and the children have really enjoyed exploring outdoors.
We have been taking lots of spring walks to look for all the signs that
it is here. We explored with worms and mud. The children really
enjoyed that. We are also talking about Easter. The children cannot
wait for our egg hunt and enjoyed coloring eggs today.
We have started having the children sign in the morning and
they really love it. They are doing very well writing the letters in
their names. It is helping them recognize more letters as well as
improve holding a writing utensil. We have been working on a
different letter each week in the classroom. We work on recognizing
the letter as well as the sound it makes. In April we will work on the
letters M, N, O, and P. They are starting to realize the different
sounds and come up with words that start with the sound.
Hope everyone has a great month!

Giraffe Whistles:
The children anxiously welcomed the arrival of spring
as well as their new teacher, Julie. When asked what they
knew about spring, Ben replied, “everything comes beautiful”..
what a happy thought! Spring’s arrival brings many
opportunities to explore and experience nature. One warm day
we went outside, and the children each took a turn flying a kite.
In the classroom we experimented with the wind by
blowing objects through straws; we also painted by creating
wind with our straws and a hairdryer. The children are very
fascinated with all our books about tornadoes and weather. We
have also taken many walks outdoors to look for the way
Spring changes the environment. We have also started focusing
on the many insects spring brings. The children really enjoyed
getting an up-close experience with worms, as well as making
an edible treat using gummy worms.
We are continuing to work on letter recognition and
their sounds, and the children have shown much improvement.
The older children are working towards writing stories and
sounding out words.
Hope everyone has a beautiful and safe spring.
