What a great summer we have been having! Even the record heat has not slowed us down. And the good news
is we still have a lot of summer left. This month we will be exploring units on the Farm, Camping, and of course
we canā€™t let the month of August go by without talking about the Fair. Just a reminder, we are still looking for
volunteers to go with us to the Lorain County Fair on Tues., Aug. 21.
I am proud to announce that Kendal at Oberlin has received the Intergenerational Program of Distinction Award
from Generations United! Everyone has worked very hard to make this program a success, as we all recognize the
importance of intergenerational activities in the lives of both our children and our ā€œGrandfriends.ā€

Have a great month! Robin and Sara

Our ā€œGrandfriendsā€ continue to enrich our lives in many ways. Janet came into the Birdsā€™ room this
last week and thoroughly enjoyed reading stories to our children. During our unit on Beach & Ocean, she
played with the children in the sensory table, digging for shells in the sand. She even had Savannah lining up
multiple shells on the table in different patterns and designs. She has asked if we can come back to visit her at
her apartment again, so hopefully that will be in our plans very soon.
Helen came down to the Birdsā€™ Intergenerational time in the Jameson Great Room and played many of
our favorite songs on the piano. She has such a great way of involving the children, and we are looking forward
to singing with her again in 2 weeks.

                                     Giraffe Whistles:

The Giraffes have had a wonderful time learning all about the ocean.
We did experiments to see how salt water affects how items float. We
studied the many creatures that live within the deep waters and made several
cute sea creature crafts. The children also enjoyed the two new play centers
we added to our room. The first one added was a representation of an ocean
with a net and a pool, and the second was a ship they created from a large
box. If you have not yet heard your child sing ā€œThe Silly Pirate Songā€ you
should ask them to do so. They loved it! Our trip to the Lake Erie Nature
and Science Center was a big hit as the children enjoyed all it had to offer.
They were able to observe many animals and fish, climb through a tree
trunk, and listen to the sound of the waves as they hit the shore.
It is hard to believe that school will be starting very soon, and I will be
saying goodbye to seven of our children as they go off to kindergarten.
Since we must say goodbye, we have chosen August 17th as the date for
preschool graduation for those who will be going off to kindergarten this
fall. The children have already started practicing for their big day and are
looking forward to performing for their families. Stay cool and enjoy the
rest of your summer.

August 2012 newsletter

  • 1. August, 2012 Newsletter What a great summer we have been having! Even the record heat has not slowed us down. And the good news is we still have a lot of summer left. This month we will be exploring units on the Farm, Camping, and of course we canā€™t let the month of August go by without talking about the Fair. Just a reminder, we are still looking for volunteers to go with us to the Lorain County Fair on Tues., Aug. 21. I am proud to announce that Kendal at Oberlin has received the Intergenerational Program of Distinction Award from Generations United! Everyone has worked very hard to make this program a success, as we all recognize the importance of intergenerational activities in the lives of both our children and our ā€œGrandfriends.ā€ Have a great month! Robin and Sara Birthdays This Month: Upcoming Dates: August 2 ā€“ Birds Library Trip August 23 ā€“ Savannah turns 4! August 6 ā€“ Tuition Payments Due Happy, Happy August 17 ā€“ Graduation for children Birthday to You! starting Kindergarten August 17 ā€“ Giraffes Library Trip August 20 ā€“ Tuition Payments Due Intergenerational News Our ā€œGrandfriendsā€ continue to enrich our lives in many ways. Janet came into the Birdsā€™ room this last week and thoroughly enjoyed reading stories to our children. During our unit on Beach & Ocean, she played with the children in the sensory table, digging for shells in the sand. She even had Savannah lining up multiple shells on the table in different patterns and designs. She has asked if we can come back to visit her at her apartment again, so hopefully that will be in our plans very soon. Helen came down to the Birdsā€™ Intergenerational time in the Jameson Great Room and played many of our favorite songs on the piano. She has such a great way of involving the children, and we are looking forward to singing with her again in 2 weeks.
  • 2. Bird Tweets: It is August, and hopefully it will be cooler than July! We have a lot planned for August as we talk about the Olympics. The children love trying to do Olympic sports. We will also be talking about camping and the fair. We are going to try to go to the fair this month to see all the animals. The children had a blast in July! By far the favorite was Pirate and Mermaid Week! They loved making pirate hats, playing with a pirate ship, and mermaids. Thanks to all that donated boxes and paper towel rolls for our pirate crafts! They also enjoyed our trip to the Lake Erie Science Center and getting ice cream at Huntington Beach. Hope everyone has a great month! Sara, Robin, & Jennifer Giraffe Whistles: The Giraffes have had a wonderful time learning all about the ocean. We did experiments to see how salt water affects how items float. We studied the many creatures that live within the deep waters and made several cute sea creature crafts. The children also enjoyed the two new play centers we added to our room. The first one added was a representation of an ocean with a net and a pool, and the second was a ship they created from a large box. If you have not yet heard your child sing ā€œThe Silly Pirate Songā€ you should ask them to do so. They loved it! Our trip to the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center was a big hit as the children enjoyed all it had to offer. They were able to observe many animals and fish, climb through a tree trunk, and listen to the sound of the waves as they hit the shore. It is hard to believe that school will be starting very soon, and I will be saying goodbye to seven of our children as they go off to kindergarten. Since we must say goodbye, we have chosen August 17th as the date for preschool graduation for those who will be going off to kindergarten this fall. The children have already started practicing for their big day and are looking forward to performing for their families. Stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer. Karen and Julie
