1. October 2012 Newsletter
Fall is here and once again this year has flown by. This month we start our ELI trips again for our Giraffe
classroom. We also have KELC pictures by Lifetouch which is a small fundraiser that we do in the spring and fall
to not only assist you with pictures for your children but also KELC receives a portion of the profits. We will also
be having a fall parade where the children can dress up and parade through the hallways to show off their costumes
to the residents. KELC will be closed Friday, November 2nd for an in-service day as we prepare for conferences.
Please mark your calendar for these events as the dates are listed below. In November we will also be doing a
Thirty-One fundraiser!
Kendal at Oberlin and KELC are supporting United Way during the week of October 8-12th and are planning to
collect pennies and canned goods. (A list of items they are collecting was emailed and is available on Facebook.)
We will also be pumpkin bowling for $1 on Monday, October 8th, 2012. I hope you have a great month and that
you get to join us for some of our events this month. ~ Jeni

Intergenerational News
The children love reading stories with Janet when she comes to visit on Thursdays. Our new friends are getting
to know our grandfriends during intergenerational time on Wednesday mornings. They love when Helen comes to
play the piano.
The Giraffes have once again started visiting our Kendal friends on Thursday afternoons in central activities
room. Due to limited space we will be alternating who goes each week. These visits are different from our summer
visits in the garden. During our Thursday visits we alternate between cooking, art, movement and music activities.
So far the children have enjoyed making scarecrows and pinwheels for peace.
2. Bird Tweets:
September sure did fly by! We talked a lot about fall and
apples during September. Cooking activities last month included
making applesauce and apple tarts. The children always enjoy
cooking. They also loved picking apples from the trees at Apple Hill
and the hay ride to the orchard!
October is going to be busy! We are continuing talking about
fall, community helpers, and pond life. We will be having a fall parade
on October 26th and children can wear costumes for the residents.
In September we noticed that Sebastian loves building and
coloring. He has learned to draw rainbows and it quite good at it.
Sebastian and Madeline are doing great writing their names and signing
in each day. Asia loves to paint and play with her friends. She plays
babies with Phoebe and Madeline. She is doing a great job with potty
training as well!! Lydia loves to paint! She enjoys playing in the
sensory table with Phoebe. Madeline loves reading books to her
friends. She loves being the mommy during baby play with Asia and
Phoebe. Phoebe loves the babies also and loves to try to wrap them in
the blanket. We would also like to welcome Hazel to our class this
month.
Have a great month!
Sara, Robin, and Jenn
Giraffe Whistles:
As we welcome fall, we also welcome the beginning of a new school
year. We like to spend the first couple of weeks getting to know each
other by making an “All About Me Book”. This gives us a chance to
learn about your child both academically and socially as we complete
them. The thing which stands out to me the most about this group is that
they really like to talk and share. Can you believe we have already had a
discussion on politics? If you have not yet sent in the requested pictures
please do so.
We have also been busy discussing all the changes which fall brings.
The children enjoyed harvesting the pumpkins and beans we grew in our
garden. We also had the yummy pleasure of eating applesauce and
turnovers which we made ourselves. The first week of October we will
discuss pond life to prepare for our trip to the Cleveland Botanical
Gardens on October 5th.
With colder weather approaching please check your child’s extra
clothing to make sure it is appropriate. Thanks
Karen, Sara and Julie
