YR 5 Spanish Day

First of all, we decided to do a mind map of Spain. All the class managed to do their own mind map. The categories were:
people, tourism, climate, landscape, spanish food and famous Spaniards. We all thought it was a real map that guides you
through certain places but Mrs McCarthy showed us what a real mind map was with a very good example.

We also coloured in a Spanish flag. The pencils were sharpened 2 or 3 times but we managed to finish them and make
them nice and colourful. It didn’t take us just one day and people started to get sore fingers, but we managed to finish
                                                       them in the end.

Our kind teachers did not make us draw maps of Europe. Luckily we had a printed copy, ready for us to colour and label.

Next we had to compare Southport and Torremolinos. Southport was easy but Torremolinos was trickier.

Later on, we learned about the popular Spanish festival La Tomitana where people throw enormous amounts of extra ripe
tomatoes. The festival starts at around 10 or 11 0’clock. Lots of visitors attend the festival which is good for the town of
                                                     Bunol and its people.
We also did some research on the laptops about Spanish islands including The Balearics and The Canaries, interesting
landmarks and Spanish Culture. Every child had a different fact to write down.

Y5 also watched a cookery demonstration of a tasty Spanish dish, Chicken Basque. One of the pupils commented, and
this is what they remarked ‘It was nice and tasty and personally I could have eaten it all!’
Our final activity was to look at the work of a Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi who is famous for designing buildings. We
created our own building designs using his ideas.
                                                   It was a fantastic week!

We are keeping last weeks competition open for ONE MORE WEEK.

                                                     ‘Once Upon A Time’

The competition is to design a festival logo. It must be a black and white design, either drawn or computer generated. It
must be enclosed in a shape around 8cm wide by 5cm high and can include an image if you wish. The following

  • 5. YR 5 Spanish Day First of all, we decided to do a mind map of Spain. All the class managed to do their own mind map. The categories were: people, tourism, climate, landscape, spanish food and famous Spaniards. We all thought it was a real map that guides you through certain places but Mrs McCarthy showed us what a real mind map was with a very good example. We also coloured in a Spanish flag. The pencils were sharpened 2 or 3 times but we managed to finish them and make them nice and colourful. It didn’t take us just one day and people started to get sore fingers, but we managed to finish them in the end. Our kind teachers did not make us draw maps of Europe. Luckily we had a printed copy, ready for us to colour and label. Next we had to compare Southport and Torremolinos. Southport was easy but Torremolinos was trickier. Later on, we learned about the popular Spanish festival La Tomitana where people throw enormous amounts of extra ripe tomatoes. The festival starts at around 10 or 11 0’clock. Lots of visitors attend the festival which is good for the town of Bunol and its people. We also did some research on the laptops about Spanish islands including The Balearics and The Canaries, interesting landmarks and Spanish Culture. Every child had a different fact to write down. Y5 also watched a cookery demonstration of a tasty Spanish dish, Chicken Basque. One of the pupils commented, and this is what they remarked ‘It was nice and tasty and personally I could have eaten it all!’ Our final activity was to look at the work of a Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi who is famous for designing buildings. We created our own building designs using his ideas. It was a fantastic week! Ishbel, Nia & Anya Shinewaves Competition Time We are keeping last weeks competition open for ONE MORE WEEK. This year is an ARTS FESTIVAL year. Norwood is renowned for its Arts Festivals. The theme of the festival, this year, is ‘Once Upon A Time’ The competition is to design a festival logo. It must be a black and white design, either drawn or computer generated. It must be enclosed in a shape around 8cm wide by 5cm high and can include an image if you wish. The following information must be included: The words ‘Arts Festival’, the date ‘4th - 15th July’. All Norwood pupils are invited to enter and there will be a prize for the winner. The winning logo will be incorporated into the t-shirt. There will be another competition next year to design the image for the t-shirt. so, get designing! Norwood Crescent, Southport. PR9 7DU. Tel: 01704 211960. Fax 01704 232712. Head Teacher: Mr Lee Dumbell. Email: admin.norwood@schools.sefton.gov.uk www.norwoodprimaryschool.com
