Warm –up – pens, paper, journal, books, note
(note) Knowledge is power. Giving and receiving information is key
to becoming and staying powerful.
(Discuss) It is not the INFORMATION you learn in school that is
important. It is the PROCESS of how you get that information, keep
it and use it which is important. Do you agree or disagree?
Homework
Will be a short 5-10 minute activity in the activity book.
Skills
Expressing ideas and managing information.
Today's Objectives
1. Examine how politicians use social media.
2. Understand how horrifically powerful media is in politics.
Heading: Media 5 Date:
 We are going to read page 319 – 321 of the book which looks
at how politicians use social media. It will look at how
information can make or break a persons life.
 We shall take notes along the way about how you control and
‘spin’ information.
 We’ll then examine two activities in your activity book, one
which asks you to write two tweets and the other gives you
the format for writing a news article.
Plan for today
 I will need about thirteen people to read page 319 – 321 of your
main book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
 (note) Politicians are our representatives. Their job is to listen
to us, fight for what we want and do what is best for us.
 (note) ‘Spin-doctors’ try to turn or spin a bad story into a good
one, or one with a more favorable outcome.
 (Blue card – bad. Blue card for protecting someone being
bullied – not as bad).
 (note) Politicians often bend the truth. If caught in a lie, they
are often sued in court however.
 (Discuss) What promises would you make to get power in class.
Page 319 - 321 (main book) reading and notes
 I will need about five more people to read page 320 – 321 of your
main book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
 (note) Media has freedom of speech, right to protection and
can access any official document politicians have.
 (note) Social media like Facebook and Twitter do not have the
same rules Journalists have to follow. Laws are still being
thought up and introduced.
 (note) Hearing about and seeing a problem are very different.
People are more likely to act if they see a problem.
 (Task) Create the two tweets on page 126 of your activity book.
Each box can only have one letter / character (including spaces
between words and .?!%#@).
Page 320 - 321 (main book) reading and notes
 (Task 1) Page 126 asks you to write two tweets. Make promises as a
politician and organize a protest about something of your
choosing.
 (Task 2) Examine the format of an article given on page 127. In
the lighter grey box, see how the name of the paper is at the
top, today's day and date, etc.
 Your task is to write a short article on a topic of your choosing
(something as big as what you saw in the news or as small as
what happened in a class or hobby recently).
 Must have a headline – ‘THE WORLD IS DOOMED’
 Explain the story and give us some information (fake news ).
