Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat caused by disorganized electrical activity in the atria. It can lead to hemodynamic compromise, an increased risk of blood clots, and higher mortality. Symptoms include an irregular pulse, changing blood pressure, palpitations, and reduced exercise tolerance. Causes include acute myocardial infarction, hypertension, cardiac surgery, supraventricular tachycardia, alcohol intake, thyroid disorders, and enlarged or inflamed atria. Management focuses on rate control, anticoagulation, and attempts to restore normal sinus rhythm to reduce the risk of blood clots.
