“Oh GOSH! Reflecting on Hackteria's Collaborative Practices in a Global Do-It...
Learning Technologies Through Magazine Design
1. QUESTION 6
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE
PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
2. MICROSOFT PUBLISHER
When creating my school magazine cover I chose Microsoft publisher as I thought it would
be a easier program to use then photoshop, I started by having a basic template which I
then added images which overlapped and underlapped text by changing the format to
either bring to front or send to back. It was also easy to insert a variety of shapes and add
text which the tools where at the top of the page. I could also import different fonts and
images, which I used adobe firework to cut out the background. I could also align the text
easily using the alignment tool.
Microsoft was quite a simplistic program which enabled me to work quickly and easily as I
had used the program numerous times before.
3. ADOBE FIREWORKS
I used this program when I came to difficulty and couldn’t get rid of
backgrounds on images which I did not want, this was a easy program
which I could use a simple tool which would easily get the background
away, which sometimes if the colours of the background and the image
wanted was to similar than it needed a bit more effort and i had to
change the tolerance of the tool.
Adobe fireworks was used when making my school front cover because
I could also get rid of the white patches within letters of my fonts which I
did not want.
4. ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS6
I used photoshop when I started creating my music magazine, as I wanted my work to be high quality
and I new there was multiple effects and tools I could use to do so. I started to experiment with
different effects with my main image and found one that suited my genre called crosshatch, I also
found that there was a similar tool like the transparent colour tool which was called the magic wand
tool which could get rid of the background also, I could also change the tolerance of the magic wand
tool to fade out the background for a better effect. With adobe photoshop I could create many layers
which I could also group so images where easy to find and I could also hide them pressing on the
eyes of the layer, to try different things. I could change the layers names so I knew what layer was
what and made groups such as bottom strip so all layers included in the bottom strip were grouped
together. With shapes I could make create a outline and change the thickness and colour which
helped make the shapes stand out which was a blending option called stroke.
I did encounter a few problems when using this program but used tutorials, guides and trial and error
to get around these problems.
5. BANDICAM-
• I used Bandicam to create my evaluation question 1 as it allowed me
to share more multimedia when talking about my magazine and actual
professional magazines, whilst being able to speak and talk about
what I liked about my magazine, advantages and disadvantages and
comparing them to the other magazines.
6. ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS6
Here I have tried different filters for my
main image. Which I liked one called
Crosshatch
Here I have added a stroke on my right pug
to thicken the outline and make it stand out
more.
7. FONTS
For some fonts I used dafont.com such as with my masthead for my
music magazine as I could search different genres of fonts which
helped me choose an appropriate font for my magazine which was
called codygraff under graffiti. I would print screen the font then use
either publisher or photoshop to crop and delete the background.
I also used photoshop when I had developed my skills to create text
and add different effects such as outer glows and strokes to make the
text look better and stand out.
8. WHAT I USED
• When taking images I used a Toshiba cameleo and a Nikon Coolpix
L27.
• I used a 16gb SD card to save all
• I used a RM tutor laptop
• I used a 32gb San disk memory card to save all photoshop
documents
