Females Of The Same Sexual Orientation
The Jurgens, Schwitzer, & Middleton, (2004) study pointed out that focus groups were asked whether males of the same sexual orientation delivered
an optimistic and restricted perspective to social transformation, and 68% of the sample evaluated was unbiased. Some of the questionnaire's questions
included, sexual option have nothing to do with a person's personality or their input to civilization (Jurgens et al, 2004). The inquiries claimed
individuals of the same sexual persuasion are worthy of comparable shelter and safety (Jurgens et al, 2004). The participants in the survey determined
that females of the same sexual orientation vindicated comparable protection and the similar privileges as heterosexuals (Jurgens et al, 2004). Two
topics came up, and one theme was that female of the same sexual preference should not have corresponding rights in the area of child nurturing
(Jurgens et al, 2004). The responses sets stated that it did not give kids any other possibilities (Jurgens et al, 2004). The respondents in the survey
claimed it was detrimental for a child's health to be brought up in female of the same sexual orientation's family unit, and it made the household
arrangement idiosyncratic (Jurgens et al, 2004).
According to the Anselmi, Voci, Vianello, & Robusto, (2015) analysis argued that explicitly, men of the same sexual preference assumed there was
ineffectual in–group predisposition in comparison to males belonging to heterosexuality. Women of the same sexual

Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity
As mainstream media is now embracing the once taboo topics of sexual orientation and gender identity as popular culture utilities, psychologists and
medical professionals are still researching the biological, psychological, and social differences between the two. Since the phenomena of ВЁcoming
out," or openly identifying as a sexual orientation or gender identity besides heterosexual or cisgender respectively, is a relatively recent anomaly, there
is limited but contemporary research. The analyses done so far indicate a universal and clear consensus signaling the separation and unrelated nature of
sexual orientation and gender identity. The American Psychological Association on their webpage defines sexual orientation as "...the sex of those to
whom one is sexually and romantically attracted...research has suggested that sexual orientation does not always appear in such definable categories
and instead occurs on a continuum. In addition, some research indicates that sexual orientation is fluid for some people." While in contrast, gender
identity is defined as "one's sense of oneself as male, female, or transgender." Milton Diamond attempted to separate the aspects of one's personality in
his 2002 research paper entitled Sex and Gender are Different: Sexual Identity and Gender Identity are Different. Diamond asserts that in order to
understand the distinction between gender and sexual identity, one must understand the distinction between gender and sex, two words commonly

Personality and Sexual Orientation Essay
Hypothesis: Sexual orientation has an effect on one's personality, even at birth. My Initial Hypothesis I believe that sexual orientation is not
something that is learned. I believe that from the time we are born, we have imbedded in our minds our sexual preferences. I do not believe that a gay
man is gay because of the choices that he has made in his life. I believe that he was born gay, but the choices and his environment have only reinforced
it. Attachment is something that affects children when they are first born. When they are born they are attracted, so to speak, to their parents. They see
them every day, and their parents give them what they want and when they want it (Bernstein, 2011, p.22). Most people are familiar with the... Show

Jamil, Harper, and Fernandez (2009) conducted a study on gay, lesbian, and bisexual minority teens with the purpose of correlating the relationship
between sexual development and ethnic identity. "Sexual identity awareness was triggered internally, by youth recognizing their sexual or romantic
attraction to members of the same sex," (Jamil, Harper, & Fernandez, 2009). Golombok and Tasker (1996) researched the effect lesbian mothers have
on their children's sexuality. They took several lesbian mothers and compared their rearing techniques to those of heterosexual mothers. Several years
later they conducted a follow–up study and the results were not so conclusive. Although there were slightly more children that turned out homosexual
under the care of the lesbian mothers, there was no direct correlation with the heterosexual mothers. Furthermore, there was absolutely no correlation
with boys being homosexual and having a homosexual mother. In Golombok and Taskers study they state that an attraction is actually being in a
relationship. Even so, the teens from the lesbian background said that they could see themselves or think about being in a homosexual relationship.
Blaise (2010) noted that children know more about sex and sexuality than they let on. She believes that children should not be directly taught about
sexual desires and sexuality; rather,

Personal Statement On Sexual Orientation
In taking answering the questions to the Personal Autobiography on Sexual Orientation, I was able to reflect upon my life up to now as being a gay
male from the Midwest. My first memories about really being exposed to sexual orientation would have to have been back in elementary school
where sexual orientation was introduced by peers more or less as a name calling, playground name calling sort of thing–I was introduced to sexual
orientation in a negative way. In terms of my parents, I would say the messages from there were positive as my grandma has a brother who is gay
and has been "out" since the 1980s, so they have gone through the process of acceptance of LGBTQ individuals. When I look at sexuality and my
peers, I would say in middle and high school the messages were mixed. Negative messages were how LGBTQ individuals were treated if it was
known they were of whichever letter in the alphabet, but also the negative messages came in the often heard usage of the word "faggot" to insult
someone. To me, my peers then were exercising this idea of cultural destructiveness, or where they felt they (heterosexual) were the most superior
sexual orientation compared to others. I would say the faculty at school when this would occur was more or less culturally blind, or they felt as though
the sexual orientation of a student should not matter; however, I felt as though the faculty maybe didn't understand the struggles an LGBTQ person
goes through and how painful hearing

Sexual Orientation And Identity Of An Individual
Identity is vital to every person. Every individual has his or her own identity as well as his own values. It is these values that help describe the
individual's identity. The various aspects that make an individual's identity is the gender, physical ability, race and sexual orientation. This dispels out
the confusion that exist between sexual orientation and identity of an individual. Sexual orientation is a branch of a person's identity.
Sexual orientation is a branch of personal identity that has existed for long though it is likely to be ignored by many people. From the past, in the
people's mindset, it was acceptable, normal and proper for men and women to enter into a sexual relationship. Traditionally, sexual attraction between
people of opposite sex, commonly referred to as heterosexual orientation, has been common and acceptable. However, with the growth of globalization,
technology and influence of western education, there are many changes in the sexual orientation and individuals' culture value.
The topic of sexual orientation touches various sections and various people in the society. The community culture, social fabric, religion, political,
health and judicial formations have had the influence of sexual orientations. These formations expressed divergent reactions in regard to support,
condemnation or protection in favor of different types of sexual orientations. The concept of sexual orientation is wide and complex and encompasses
several components. In order

The Sexual Health Class : Sexual Orientation
In my sexual health class, we talked about sexual orientation. We had two guest speakers, one was a lesbian that was engaged and a transgender
from a man to female. The lesbian speaker talked to us about how her journey went when she came out to her family and friends that she was a
lesbian. She said it was not easy, but over the years her family started to support her decision of being with the same sex. For the transgender male to
female had a different story. He was the only child and only had one girl in his life which was somewhat not by choice. He was young and a little girl
asked him if he was gay and at that time he was in denial so he said no and when she asked will you go out with he was like he did not care, but
after one week he got his best friend to break them up. I found that funny because he got his best friend to break them up because he did like that
fact that she was a girl. But to make a long story short, he found out that in his middle school years that he loves the same sex and that he saw
himself as a woman and not a male. A year ago, he came out to his family and friends that he was gay and that he was going through the change of
became a transgender. The person that was most hurt was his father because he was the only child and he was a boy. As he grew up, his father was a
bishop and soon became a pastor and it was hard for him to support his new daughter when the Bible says otherwise. It was just interesting that his
father has to decide what to do.

Backgrounds of sexual orientation have made an attempt to be defined with natural and environmental principles, though none is adequate to describe
the cause. Sexual orientation has been accredited to changes in construction and purpose of the brain, precisely in hypothalamus of straight and gay
men (LeVay, 1991). Though the exploration doesn't find the hypothalamus as the cause ofsexual orientation, it does specify the existence of natural
influence initiating the sexual orientation. Numerous other studies relating to the left or right–handedness, faint noises in ear in response to clicking

The Issue Of Sexual Orientation
In the United States of America, 1.8 percent of men and 1.5 percent of women identify themselves as homosexuals (Volokh 1). This means that in a
group of one hundred men, around two of them are homosexuals, and the same goes for women. The background regarding sexual orientation is vast,
and a lot of different definitions of the concept have been introduced throughout time. Nevertheless, although homosexuality is fairly common in the
United States, many people still misunderstand it. The different types of sexual orientations and their difference from other sexual–related terms, such as
gender role and gender identity, are all confused by the general population. Sadly, even today, there are people that believe in a right or wrongsexual
orientation. Moreover, the origins of sexual orientation are highly discussed and debated by the scientific community, with theories including biological
and environmental explanations. The importance of such origins resides in the fact that this nature–nurture debate is capable of changing people's
perspectives towards homosexuality, and even though the media has done a great job by transforming any sex–related topic from a taboo to an
acceptable conversation point, society still needs to grasp a lot about sexual orientation. Particularly, the fact that sexual orientation is a complex,
largely misunderstood human characteristic resulting from a combination of biological and environmental factors that play an essential role in society's

Sexual Orientation And The Workplace
Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Workplace
Nelson Mandela once stated, "To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity." Every human being should have the same
opportunities as each other, no matter their skin color, background, sexual orientation, career, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status. We were all
given the same human rights when we were born in the U.S., but it seems as if that is gradually taken away from us, as we begin to stop fitting into
the picture society has made for us. Many LGBT+ workers are denied their human rights when opening up about themselves in a workplace. Sexual
Orientation effects people's stance in the workplace as a result, those whose sexual orientation do not fit the societal norms have unequal; benefits or
opportunities, wages, treatment, and lack from non–discrimination protections.
Discrimination in the workplace occurs all over the world for many different reasons, yet sexual orientation is one of the least discussed topics.
According to Emir Ozeren, "In the workforce, LGBT+ employees are one of the least examined minority groups, even though they are one of the
largest groups of people in the workplace".("Sexual Orientation Discrimination in Workplace: A systematic"). Many studies have been made about this
topic one of them being a General Social Survey conducted by The Williams Institute that found, "42% of LGBT+ identified people in the nation have

Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Military
In September 2011, the United States lifted the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy (DADT), which restricted gay, lesbian, and bisexuals from openly
serving in the military. This was the first time in American history in which people of every sexual orientation could serve openly ("11 Facts About,"
n.d.). This was a momentous occasion for some and not so much for others. For those military members that had served in secret and those members
that were firmly against gays and lesbians, this repeal had different meaning. Both groups contained members that have served in the military for years
and were products of the Former President Bill Clinton's 1993 "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. For many soldiers of this era, communication issues arose

Despite the challenges and following numerous public debates and congressional hearings, President Clinton has able to reach a compromise in
1993. "The ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue'' policy passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993 was the
compromise outcome of Clinton's campaign promise to repeal the ban on military service by homosexuals" (Rich, Schutten & Rogers, 2012). Soldiers
would not be actively screened and as long as their sexual orientation was kept personal, there would be no adverse actions taken. Under the "Don't
Ask, Don't Tell" between 1993 and 2011, over 14,000 military men and women were discharged due to their sexual orientation ("11 Facts About," n.d.).
The Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy did not explicitly state thatgay, lesbian or bisexual was wrong. In essence by creating a policy that required a person
to hide their sexual orientation the US conveyed the message to the military and the civilian population that gay, lesbian or bisexual was still wrong.
The 1993 policy did not strengthen communications between military members of varying sexual orientation, in essence if strengthened the barrier by
avoiding the subject. A study discussed by Bonnie Moradi from the University of Florida revealed, "sexual orientation concealment was correlated
significantly and negatively with social cohesion" (Moradi,

The Importance Of Sexual Orientation
There are a lot of ramifications on the ethical justification or condemnation of any attempt to force changes sexual orientation on anyone, by agencies,
institutions, or organizations. To untangle this complex, is necessary to understand exactly what 'ethics' represent, and also what sexual orientation is
all about, in line with the expectations of the work place. How sexual orientation could be in conflict with ambitions, goals and expectations of agencies,
institutions, or organization, and especially to the extent of attracting punishment or suppression is very useful to know.
Ethics in relation to the environment or contexts stated above refers to some high standards that must be considered and upheld as morally right and
legal. It is also essential to look at it within the context of human rights. "The right to feel safe in our workplaces, educational institutions, public places
and homes is a basic human right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights "(Australian Human Rights Commission,2007). Therefore it
should evaluated based on whether it is morally, legally and humanly right to enforce punishments or suppressive ideologies and practical mauves on
anyone's' sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is "an enduring emotional, romantic, sexual or affection attraction to another person" (Sexual
Orientation and Human Rights, 2003)
Based on the few clarifications on ethics, morality, legality and human rights, it is obvious that it is ethically wrong to cause

Gender Orientation And Sexual Orientation
Did you know that gay men and lesbians do not choose their sexual orientation, but rather are born with it? There has been extensive research proving
that sexual orientation is caused by many biological factors, whereas there is no solid proof that social factors after birth affect sexual orientation
(Swaab, 2007, p. 442). Sexual orientation is already programmed into the brain, with the influence of sex hormones and genes, before a child is
even born. The development of sexual orientation is caused by sex hormones, genes, and the brain, which then cause differences in the anatomical
body (LeVay, 2011, p.271). Firstly, sex hormones that mainly influence a person's sexual orientation are the levels of testosterone during critical
periods of prenatal development (LeVay, 2011, p. 132). If androgen insensitivity syndrome occurs in individuals with XY chromosomes, the gene
coding for the androgen receptor is mutated, causing the receptor to either barely function, or not at all (LeVay, 2011, p. 137). This causes their body
to not respond to testosterone, so they begin to develop physically as a female. From here on, they are usually raised as girls, and they develop an
attraction to males, as well a feminine–typical traits.
A condition that can occur in females is called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which is when there are above normal amounts of prenatal testosterone
and androgens, which causes a female to grow up with masculinized traits (LeVay, 2011, p. 134). A majority

The topic of sexual orientation is both sensitive and controversial. This is evident in events, such as the Pride Parade, and also in media, where
authoritative figures preach against it and speak of its "sinful nature" (Emmanuele, Blanchard, Camperio–Ciani, & Bancroft, 2010). Sexual orientation
exists in various forms, it differs in the way it is viewed by different cultures, and researchers propose different perspectives to explain the emergence
of an individual 's sexual orientation. In the discourse of sexual orientation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A pattern emerges where the scholarly literature exploring this topic is largely focused on males. Reason being is that it appears that males are the
sex who are predominantly homosexual in their orientation (LeVay & Baldwin, 2012). However, the sensitivity within the discourse of sexual
orientation arises when it is debated upon whether one 's sexual preference is innate at birth, hence a force of nature or biology, or if it is a result of
culture, nurture or environmental factors (Emmanuele et al., 2010). Furthermore, an experimental design will be proposed to further examine this
topic. Comparing the three chosen studies, it is evident that a biological and endocrinological perspective does account for sexual orientation
(Kraemer et al., 2006; Manning et al., 2007; Miller et al., 2008). Of the studies that currently exist on this topic, data shows that prenatal testosterone
levels are indicative of sexual orientation (Kraemer et al., 2006; Manning et al., 2007; Miller et al., 2008). This paper addresses a topic that is
relevant in today 's society; a topic that has, for the most part, been written off as having any scientific roots (Emmanuele et al., 2010). This paper
counters that belief and in reading this essay, it will be evident that biology and endocrinology have a much stronger influence on sexual orientation
than previously thought. Kraemer et al. (2006) conducted a study based on scientifically–proven knowledge

Sexual orientation
The theme that we have been focusing on in class for the past two weeks is sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is more complex than just the
gender a person is attracted to. Instead sexual orientation is on more of a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum a person can be solely heterosexual
and on the opposite side a person can be completely homosexual. This also means that a person can be bisexual if they identify more in the middle of
the spectrum. The spectrum allows for all individuals of all different sexualities to have a place on the spectrum. In the films Chasing Amy and XXY
we see two individuals who are more fluid with their sexuality and do not identify with being solely homosexual or solely heterosexual.
The movie Chasing Amy is about a woman named Alyssa. Alyssa faces many judgments from her friends when she tells them that she is now
seeing a man. Alyssa's friends who were all lesbians judged her for now dating a man. This is because they thought that Alyssa was a lesbian. Her
friends were judging her because she was maybe becoming a bi sexual and not a lesbian like she thought she had been, "Biphobia, like homophobia, is
prejudice based on negative stereotypes. It is often born of ignorance" (Diehl, Ochs p.385). Throughout the movie Alyssa had to explain her sexual past
because of her sexual orientation. She was judged and belittled due to being a bi sexual, and when her past relationships were brought up they were

Introduction
Homosexuality is defined or characterized as attraction towards the same gender either male or female. It came from the Greek language, where
"homo" means the same or similar, hence referring to the attraction between two beings of the same sex. Homosexuality is also referred as a clinical
term. Most male homosexuals generally prefer to be called "gay men" and most homosexual women generally prefer to be called "lesbians."
Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, alongside bisexual and heterosexual. The longstanding consensus of the
behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality is an example of normal and positive variation in
human sexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nurture concept of homosexuality include elements which influence a human's sexual relationship likes social, parental and environment variables.
A total opposite from the idea of the nature concept, a nurtured homosexual person is one that is "made" gay or lesbian.
"While I don 't believe the environment can "make someone gay", it certainly can influence their willingness to accept their sexuality and/or to "come
out" to others. In communities where intolerance is frowned upon and society in general is "gay–friendly", a gay child is more likely to feel
comfortable both with his/her own sexual orientation, and with sharing this information with family or friends. On the other hand, in places where
homosexuality is frowned upon or even punished, they are more likely to keep it hidden, or even deny it to themselves.
The most controversial questions that arise in relation to sexual orientation are targeted towards how one's sexual orientation forms, what factors go
into it and most importantly whether individuals have a choice in this process. According to the American Psychology Association, one's sexual
orientation is not adopted via an individual's choice, but rather develops as a result of "cognitive and biological factors" and as well as by interacting
with the surrounding environment. In simpler terms, there is a possibility in everybody even you and me being a homosexual.

The Sexual Orientation Of Parents
The sexual orientation of parents, once having a child, does not negatively affect the development of their children. In order to first be a parent, one
must obtain a child. However, in Florida, gay foster parents were not allowed to adopt the children they fostered due to the Gay Adoption Ban
(Goldberg). Homosexuals were not legally able to adopt a child at all until the forty year old ban was lifted July, 2015 by Governor Rick Scott
(Associated Press). "Prior to the lifting of the gay adoption ban, female same–sex couples could build their families via DI, as opposed to male couples,
whose reproductive options were more limited... surrogacy is very expensive" (Goldberg 117). Adoption is usually a first option for gay couples
due to the inability to reproduce through traditional means. The second, and much more expensive options are insemination for women, and
surrogacy for men. Without the option of adoption, many gay couples are not able to have the right to raise a child. Furthermore, the difficulties
homosexual couples have to acquire a child make it almost impossible to exercise that right. However, once having a child, he or she is cared for
just as any other heterosexual couple would care for a child. The development of children raised by homosexual couples is not significantly different
from that raised by heterosexual couples. "Children whose parents are gay or lesbian have no more problems with self–esteem, psychological
adjustment, intellectual capacity,

The Psychology Of Sexual Orientations
The Psychology of Sexual Orientations Throughout the history of humans, people have been having sex. It's obviously necessary for the continuation
of humans as a species. But it definitely hasn't been for just reproductive purposes. People have been engaging in same–gender sex for probably as long
as humans have been around. However, the terms we think of today when we think of different sexual orientations didn't get coined until the 19th and
20th centuries. And with these terms came huge stigma that still exists today. There are many different sexual orientations that people identify as
(including heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, as well as many others); the orientations that do not coincide with what people viewed as
normal were originally given classification as mental disorders.
The most common sexual orientation, regardless of culture, is heterosexuality. This is defined as a sexual orientation in which an individual is
generally sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex. A Centers for Disease Control national survey "reported that the percentage of Americans
who identify themselves as heterosexual was 90 percent for men and women" (King, 2011, p. 363). This orientation is also considered by many people,
cultures and religion throughout history and into the present as being the "normal" and "natural" orientation, with the idea that any deviation from
heterosexuality is unnatural, a choice, and a thing that needs to be corrected. This belief,

Is Sexual Orientation Biologically Based or Choice?
Over the years there has been many debates and experiments to try to come to the conclusion of whether sexual orientaion is biologically based or
choice. Sexual orientation is a pattern of emotional, romantic, or sexual attractions to men, women or both sexes. Sexual orientation is defined in terms
of relationships with others since their identity is based off of their attractions. Sexual orientation can be noted through behaviors such as holding hands
or kissing, sharing goals and values, mutual support, and ongoing commitments. Sexual orientation can be broken down into three categories
heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual. While this break down may seem very black and white, there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Researchers have narrowed the region where this gene resides to the X chromosome, Since sons get this chromosome from their mother. Studies of
DNA markers on the X chromosomes of siblings has narrowed the search to an area called XQ28. It is made up of hundreds of genes and can be
found on the tip of an X chromosome. There has also been some clues that genes are located elsewhere and could possibly have an identical effect on
sexual orientation. A team from North Shore University, Illinois, further researched these genes by comparing DNA from 1077 gay and 1231 straight
men. They scanned the men's genomes, looking for a single letter difference in their DNA sequences. From this they were able to focus on two genes
whose variants seem to be linked to sexual orientation. One of the genes is located on chromosome 13, which is active in a part of the brain called the
diencephalon which contains the hypothalamus. Another gene was discovered on chromosome 14 and is mainly active in the thyroid, but also the
brain. This gene is called TSHR, it makes a type of protein that clings on to a hormone that stimulates the thyroid. The gene plays an important role in
controlling thyroid function. There is some evidence that the brains of homosexuals may be different from those of heterosexual men and women. The
differences have been found in the hypothalamus. Studies done in the Netherlands and in Southern

Human psychosexual development is the complex learning in today's society. What is the meaning of sexual orientation? Obviously, it has to be
related to sex. It is a way for people to choose their partners to have sex with. Most of people would say it means either interested in men or are
interested in women. This is called sexual orientation. In the book Gay Straight, and the reason why written by Simon LeVay, the first chapter of talker

feelings –as expressed in answers to direct questions such as " Are you sexually attracted to men, to women, or to both men and women?" (Page 2)
The question doesn't refer to the interviewees' feelings of sexual attraction at the very instant of being asked, of course but to their tendency or
predisposition to experience such feelings over some extended period of time, perhaps over their entire adult life. In this paragraph, Simone has
described how sexual orientation formations create in a sexual orientation. Sexuality refers to a person based on sexual partner sex appeal on the basis

Homosexuality And Sexual Orientation Paper
Sexuality has become a prominent issue in today's society as the world are becoming more liberated by educational and ethical discussion. In
Sociosexual orientation, homosexuality is one of the topic that has been most discussed. People have been actively seeking for answers for the question
– why are humans, or other animals, attracted to partner that has the same–sex of themselves; when there are no evolutionary implications yet.
Moreover, many others, especially the homosexuals, are repositioning to the question of how can they identify the seemingly minority when
heterosexuality has been historically predominant.

Since the introduction of homosexuality, researchers have found that gender typicality (masculinity in a female and femininity in male) has been a
leading trait to identify those who are not heterosexual.
This research consists two studies: the first experiment aims at investigating the homosexual women's ability of differentiating homosexual and
heterosexual males and females. The second experiment investigates the same ability but from the perspectives of both homosexual and heterosexual
women.
Researchers predicted that women, regardless of their sexual orientations, will be more accurate in rating target's orientation. In addition, homosexual
women will be more accurate in identifying their target's sexual orientation because of mating interest. All hypotheses have been supported by reference

Homosexuality/Sexual Orientation
Its undeniable that one of the many hot topics now a days is homosexuality/sexual orientation and like any sort of debate of any kind the first response
is to clump it into a group thats commonly defined so that everyones on the same ground. The only problem with that is especially for something like
sexual orientation trying to clump such a complex concept is unfair because things often get misunderstood or left out because sexual orientation is a
lot more than a simple yes/no right/wrong answer.
Arguments about sexual orientation get ragingly heated. Why its such a huge issue now when its been around for centuries just goes to show that

Love. We are to love everyone no matter what support them through trials and be there for them. Now–a–days we seem to think we get an option.
People are forming teams for and against even within the christian community when really we don't have a choice. We try to figure out what verses
may apply and twist the words to our advantage.. "Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whisky bottle in the hand of
another." Harper Lee hit the nail on the head with this line from "To Kill A Mockingbird." We need to spend less time trying to influence our opinion
on people and show why we are right and more time actually loving them. People seem to think that by pointing out others sins they are in some way
helping them what they don't realize is that without love this is only pushing them further away. Yes, a confrontation is often necessary but we have

Sexual Orientation Of Sexual Minority Health Essay
Relatively recent inclusion of sexual orientation measures in a few federal and state health surveillance surveys is enabling the production of
population–based information about sexual minority health and its status relative to that of the heterosexual majority.
Few studies have been adequately powered to investigate variability in health by sexual orientation, let alone by orientation and other key social
characteristics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status); yet research suggests heterogeneity in sexual minority health. Most research on
sexual minorities health in the United States has been led utilizing convenience samples. In spite of the fact that the discoveries of this exploration have
made huge commitments to the research, information gathered from nonprobability tests have constrained access for general health planning as a
result of concerns with respect to determination predisposition and outer legitimacy. Populace based health measurements assume a key part in
illuminating the prioritization of general health and wellbeing issues, and open interest in the health advancement movement.
Moderately late consideration of sexual orientation measures in a couple of government and state wellbeing observation overviews is empowering the
generation of populace based data about sexual minority well–being, and its status with respect to that of the heterosexual dominance. In spite of the
fact that the measure of sexual introductory information gathered with

The Causes Of Sexual Orientation And Homosexuality
Charles Darwin famously said, "We do not even in the least know the final cause of sexuality. The whole subject is hidden in darkness" (Ryu). Since
the beginning of time, there have been questions revolving around the topic of sexual orientation. Within the past few decades, homosexuality is
becoming more mainstream and socially acceptable as more people begin to examine their gender identity and sexual preferences. Scientists researched
to determine the cause of sexual orientation; however, two opposing sides have formed around the issue: nature (inherited genes and biology) versus
nurture (the environment). Proponents of nature argue sexual orientation is biological and genetic; whereas proponents of nurture argue sexual
orientation is non–biological, environmental, and socially constructed.
According to the American Psychological Association, sexual orientation is not a choice; instead "...it emerges from most people in early adolescence
with no prior sexual experience" ("Answers to Your Questions About Sexual Orientation andHomosexuality"). Despite this, social theorists and other
branches of scientists argue an individual's upbringing directly impacts their sexual orientation. Many proponents of nurture are religiously motivated
to establish the morality behind sexual orientation. However, the purpose of this essay is to examine and develop a deeper understanding of the
theories surrounding the cause of sexual orientation. When combining all four non–adaptive,

Determining The Origin Of Sexual Orientation
Determining the Origin of Sexual Orientation
Since the United States Supreme Court ruled marriages of gay individuals to be legal in all states in June 2015, some segments of society, including
individuals, business and churches, continue to discriminate against gay citizens. Many of these discriminatory opinions and actions are based on
individual religious beliefs. Many people feel homosexuality is a choice of lifestyle, whereas others feel that biological factors determine a person's
sexual orientation. Homosexuals want the same legal rights as heterosexuals. In addition, if it can be proven that individuals are born gay, then
society's attitude could be favorably altered. Poll data indicates that more and more people believe individuals are born gay (See Table 1). Gays
would suffer less discrimination if their sexual orientation can be attributed to genetics and biology. Those who oppose homosexuality would feel
their condemnation justified if it can be proven the gay lifestyle is a matter of choice. The sociopolitical implications resulting from further definitive
research would be of enormous importance; however, years of research have failed to provide a definite origin of sexual orientation. Much more
research is needed to close this knowledge gap.

The debates on lesbian, gay, bi–sexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights currently center around the question of whether sexual orientation is a matter of
choice, or not. If it is claimed that sexual orientation is something that was handed down at birth and not a matter of choice, then, the act of
discrimination against this person would be wrong. The dispute draws on countless research suggesting that sexual orientation is congenital. The anti–
gay ideologues exploit these arguments. In my mind, this is not up for debate. I have known and served with men and women who have fought this
fight for a very long time. I personally do not have an issue working or serving with someone of the LGBT status. Discriminating against gay people is

Sexual Orientation Paper
Sexual orientation is the part of one's culture that defines whether one is heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. The United States has become more
open and accepting of others that are not heterosexual oriented and this, in turn, has caused this identity marker to become a more relevant part of
people's lives. Because homosexuality and bisexuality are just in the beginning stages of being culturally accepted, people who are heterosexual, or
straight, are more privileged and accepted. Any person that identifies as homosexual, bisexual, or transgender is part of the marginalized group and has
a harder time being culturally accepted and isn't as privileged.

Because of the changes being made in the United States at this time, I know that my students will be aware of sexual orientation and I know that I may
have students whose parents may be homosexual. I plan to treat these families just as I would treat any other family, although I may have to
become more sensitive with my usage of words such as "mom" or "dad." I think that setting an example of being open and accepting is the first
thing that can be done in achieving equality for homosexuals. Gender is the part of culture in which one identifies themselves as a male or female.
This identity marker has drastically changed as genetically born women are identifying psychologically as men, men identify psychologically as
women, or some undergo surgery to alter their gender. The United States values a masculine man, and he is the one who receives the most
privileges. A feminine woman in the United States has been marginalized and historically has been less privileged. My gender has always been a big
part of who I am. I am a female and I enjoy doing stereotypical "girl" things. Although I consider myself feminine, I do not think that has ever held me
back from trying things that are more stereotypical "guy" things. I enjoy sports and outdoor activities just as much as I enjoy shopping and painting my

Sexual Orientation In The LGBT Community
The term LGBT was created around the 1980s. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. The acronym was first a 14 lettered word to
try and make an effort to represent all the different sexual orientations. Today there are about 58, maybe even more, different sexual orientations.
Gender orientation is the legal and social status as men and women. Sexual orientation however, is what defines someone as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or
transgender. The best way to explain it is "sexual orientation is whom you go to bed with and gender orientation is who you go to bed as."
People of the LGBT community were treated very crudely, even today there is discrimination against people in the gay community. They would be
sent to psychiatric wards because the majority of the people back then would say they were sick in their minds and didn't know what else to do with
them. It wasn't until 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association ruled out homosexualtiy as an illness when Dr. Evelyn Hooker, who studied
gay men, wrote a innovated paper on how homosexual men are just as adjusted as hetrosexual men, if not possibly even more. The LGBT community
would also be at risk from being fired from their jobs because of their orientation or they would have their children taken away from them. Much of the
LGBT community were beaten to death because of hate crimes. Hate crimes against the LGBT were in the highest rate in 2007. On July 16th 2008, a

Sexual Orientation: Is Homosexuality Or A Choice?
As time develops the debate of sexual orientation, more so being "gay" has become a popular topic to discuss. The common question that many ask
is whether your born gay or if it's a choice. For some that answer is yes, for me the answer is no because I definitely don't think it is. Some answer
yes with the fear of openly being homosexual and admitting they have chosen to be gay. Sexual Orientation is defined as a person's sexual identity in
relation to the gender to which they are attracted; the fact of being heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. Homosexuality is present in at least 10
percent of the human population. Do you think sexual orientation is determined at birth? Imagine your first day out of your mother's womb and
someone telling you, that you were gay. The more you think about it, the more you begin to realize that would be impossible. With curiosity, you
begin to do your research on the topic of sexual orientation, among many websites, blogs and newspapers. Such a thing is portrayed by John Money's
book "Gay, Straight and In– Between." The point of emphasis in his story was viewing key points on pre–natal influences of sexuality, as well as
discussing gender differentiation in childhood. With that being said, I believe sexual orientation is a choice! There has been many study's that support
my opinion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Concept Of Sexual Orientation
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to synthesize and critically evaluate the concept of sexual orientation, especially as it is studied and presented in large,
population–based and school–based adolescent survey literature. Specifically, the study examined methodology and instrumentation used for the
assessment and measurement of youth sexual orientation present in refereed literature. Of the forty–eight empirical studies, five included items that
assessed all three dimensions of sexual orientation. The majority of studies used surveys that exclusively assessed sexual orientation identity (n = 30;
63%). The majority of those surveys provided between four and six identity response options with parenthetical descriptions, including the ... Show

Sexual orientation involves an individual's sexual attraction, identity, arousals, fantasies, and behaviors towards persons of the same sex, other sex, or
both sexes (Bell, Weinberg, & Hammersmith, 1981; LeVay & Valente, 2006; LeVay & Baldwin, 2012), and is dynamic (not static) in nature (Klein,
Sepekoff, & Wolf, 1985; Berkey, Perelman–Hall, & Kurdek, 1990). Health researchers have proposed that sexual orientation is a multi–dimensional
aspect of a person's identity that consists of at least three dimensions existing on a continuum (Sell, 1997): sexual orientation identity, sexual attraction,
and sexual behavior (Sell & Petrulio, 1996; Laumann et al., 1994; Hughes & Eliason, 2002; Solarz, 1999; Savin–Williams, 2006).
Sexual Orientation Identity. One of the earliest sexual orientation identity classification schemes proposed in the 1860s (Sell, 2007) consisted of three
categories: Dionings (heterosexual), Urnings (homosexual), and Uranodionings (bisexual). Homosexual women (Urningins) and heterosexual women
(Dioningins) maintained separate categories from men (Sell, 2007). Sexual orientation identity can be described as an individual's conception of his or
her own sexuality (Cass, 1984; Coker, Austin, & Schuster, 2010). Heterosexual (straight), homosexual (gay and lesbian), and

Changing Trends in Sexual Orientation
Changing Trends in Sexual Orientation
According to Merriam–Webster Medical Dictionary, sexual orientation refers to the inclination of an individual with respect to heterosexual,
homosexual, and bisexual behavior. The famous Kinsey Reports by Alfred Kinsey (1948) claims that about 10% of American adults are homosexual.
This astonishing figure is often presented as fact but is often criticized to be highly overestimated by academia. (Refer to Appendix 1 for figures
presented by other institutes). Studies by National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles reviews that lesbian increased from 2.8% in 1990 to
9.7% in 2000 while gay reported to rise from 5.3% in 1990 to 8.4% in 2000, depicting upward trends that are consistent with reports ... Show more

Another impact brought by this changing trend is the introduction of same–sex marriage (Appendix 3). Below is a world map depicting the legality of
homosexuality in various part of the world.
Dark Sides
As legal issues pertaining to homosexual have received more national attention, courts around the world have been reconsidering gays' and lesbians'
rights in parenting and custody cases. But the general assumption that homosexual parents have adverse effects on the psychological and social
development on a child makes it extremely difficult for gays and lesbians to become parents. However, the validity of this assumption is highly
disputable as both parties claim to have statistical evident.
On top of that, the greater willingness of people to be truthful about their sexual orientation has brought repercussion. Their visibility has invited the
attention of anti–gay activists. Gay rights movements are often accompany by anti–gay rallies and many religious bodies have also express disapproval
at this new sexual trend (Figure above). Homosexuals are also more susceptible to hatred assault compared to their straight counterpart. According to
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), 13% of the hate crimes occurred in U.S is targeted at homosexuals; sharp increase due to greater number of
people who come out of closet.
Reports also assert that homosexuality is triggering HIV escalation.

The Theory Of Sexual Orientation
Chapter 9 looks at sexuality and how it is perceived around the world. It analyzes how each unique culture recognizes homosexuality, heterosexuality,
and bisexuality as a whole. It uses this information to formulate facts, opinions, and ideas in regard to all three of these concepts.
This chapter considers gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. All three of these definitions have to do with how we classify
ourselves, not how society classifies us. Thus, we should have the freedom to decide what makes us happy, we should not have to conform to societies
beliefs.
There are five different theories of sexual orientation that are examined and discussed in this chapter. I think it is important to consider each theory and
understand why they were created. The first being the structural–functionalist perspective focuses on having safe heterosexual relationships without
cheating to ensure safe child rearing and a regular family dynamic for the child to grow up in (300). The second being the conflict perspective focuses
on the power difference between the 'straight' individuals and all the members of the LGBT community. The 'straight' individuals are seen as more
powerful because they are the norm meaning that are the dominant group. The LGBT community is the community with the least amount of power,
especially in 1973 when being gay was considered a mental illness or mental disorder (301). The third being the symbolic interactionist perspective
which focuses

Is Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Determined at Birth?
Sexual orientation, term used to describe patterns of attraction, aids in the discovery of an individual's sense of self and social identity. Sexual
orientation, also understood as more than sexual behaviors, includes emotional preference as well as an intensity of a spiritual connection with another
person. Those who fall on the continuum closer to being attracted to those of the opposite sex, which accounts for the majority, are commonly known
as straight or heterosexual. Before answering, "Is it a choice," an individual must first understand the trial and tribulations of the LGBTQ community.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, until 1974homosexuality was a mental illness. According to Merriam–Webster's Dictionary, gender
identity refers to a person's internal sense of being male, female or something else. Educators note, "While the inclusion of transgendered issues in the
lesbian, gay, and bisexual movement is controversial to some, gender and sexual orientation intersect in inseparable ways," (Fraynd 1). The growing
awareness of sexual orientation and gender identity sparked from the legalization of same–sex marriage in 2015 and the implementation of
gender–neutral bathrooms. The main arguments attempt to govern whether sexual orientation and gender identity are determined from nature or
nurture. These two viewpoints have a common

Persuasive Essay On Sexual Orientation
Love is a tricky topic. Many have been persecuted because of who they have loved. A common debate in society is that sexual orientation is a choice.
Nurture will say that the environment around a person plays a role, and nature will say that sexual orientation has to do with science. The nurture
argument is a common viewpoint because many can never imagine liking the same–sex, but then why is the nature viewpoint scientifically backed up?
Before jumping into each argument, sexual orientation needs to be defined. "Sexual orientation is about who you're attracted to and want to have
relationships with," according to Planned Parenthood (Parenthood). Sexual orientation is not the same as gender identity. Sexual orientation has to do
with who a person is attracted to, and gender identity is about what gender a person identifies with. There are many different labels that people put on
people who have a different sexual orientation than what is considered the common, which is a heterosexual relationship. The most common two are
gays for men who like men, and lesbians who are women that like women. There are also people who identify as bisexual meaning they like both
male and female. Another group that has a different sexual orientation is people who are attracted to more than just the average male and female, they
can be attracted to basically anyone, which includes people who are transgender, genderqueer, or intersex. They are named pansexual or queer. Lastly,
there are people

Sexual Orientation Is The Dominant, Or Normal, Sexual, And...
Introduction
Sexual orientationism is best described as discrimination or prejudice against homosexuals on the assumption that heterosexuality is the dominant, or
normal, sexual orientation. Within society there are many barriers, assumptions, and stigmas placed upon the queer community, numerous of which
steam from this heterosexist stance that has become the dominant ideology. This stance has historical significance in trauma, and oppression of those
within the sexual minority, and how this can play on representation.
Social Location
Because sexual orientationism, or homophobia, is something that is unconsciously encouraged since our youth by the media and its lack of
representation of the queer community, there is often a lot of work that has to be done internally in order to understand and accept homosexuality,
regardless of whether you identify with or simply wish to be an ally. My understanding of my privilege or oppression with sexual orientation comes
from many years of internally restructuring my own understanding of societal norms. I had a much easier time of accepting the community from my
mother who was always there to encourage my acceptance, and growth not only of, but within the community. As an individual who identifies as a
pansexual male, my deconstruction of what was proposed as the norm, and reconciling that with my own understanding of what I felt inside to be true
was fairly straight forward, but no less substantial. However, I do recognize my own

Sexual Orientation Discrimination Everyone agrees that workplace discrimination has no place in the modern business world. But not everyone
understands the laws that protect employees against discrimination. In this case, what you don't know can hurt you, especially if an aggrieved
employee files a discrimination claim. Definition According to an article published by Workplace Fairness, a non–profit organization that provides
information and education on employee rights, sexual orientation discrimination means treating someone differently solely because of his or her sexual
orientation whether it be homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual. This discrimination may occur because of a perception of someone whether the
perception is right or wrong. Someone who is discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation may also be discriminated against or harassed on
the basis of sex, gender identity, disability, such as actual or perceived HIV status, and/or marital status. This is very important to Human Resource
Professionals because they are the ones that make sure organization objectives are being met, and policies are being followed. It is the Human
Resource professionals that deal with staffing, compensation, safety and health, training and development as well as employee and labor relations
issues. Therefore if any situations in the workplace occur

Females Of The Same Sexual Orientation

  • 1. Females Of The Same Sexual Orientation The Jurgens, Schwitzer, & Middleton, (2004) study pointed out that focus groups were asked whether males of the same sexual orientation delivered an optimistic and restricted perspective to social transformation, and 68% of the sample evaluated was unbiased. Some of the questionnaire's questions included, sexual option have nothing to do with a person's personality or their input to civilization (Jurgens et al, 2004). The inquiries claimed individuals of the same sexual persuasion are worthy of comparable shelter and safety (Jurgens et al, 2004). The participants in the survey determined that females of the same sexual orientation vindicated comparable protection and the similar privileges as heterosexuals (Jurgens et al, 2004). Two topics came up, and one theme was that female of the same sexual preference should not have corresponding rights in the area of child nurturing (Jurgens et al, 2004). The responses sets stated that it did not give kids any other possibilities (Jurgens et al, 2004). The respondents in the survey claimed it was detrimental for a child's health to be brought up in female of the same sexual orientation's family unit, and it made the household arrangement idiosyncratic (Jurgens et al, 2004). According to the Anselmi, Voci, Vianello, & Robusto, (2015) analysis argued that explicitly, men of the same sexual preference assumed there was ineffectual in–group predisposition in comparison to males belonging to heterosexuality. • 2. Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity As mainstream media is now embracing the once taboo topics of sexual orientation and gender identity as popular culture utilities, psychologists and medical professionals are still researching the biological, psychological, and social differences between the two. Since the phenomena of ВЁcoming out," or openly identifying as a sexual orientation or gender identity besides heterosexual or cisgender respectively, is a relatively recent anomaly, there is limited but contemporary research. The analyses done so far indicate a universal and clear consensus signaling the separation and unrelated nature of sexual orientation and gender identity. The American Psychological Association on their webpage defines sexual orientation as "...the sex of those to whom one is sexually and romantically attracted...research has suggested that sexual orientation does not always appear in such definable categories and instead occurs on a continuum. In addition, some research indicates that sexual orientation is fluid for some people." While in contrast, gender identity is defined as "one's sense of oneself as male, female, or transgender." Milton Diamond attempted to separate the aspects of one's personality in his 2002 research paper entitled Sex and Gender are Different: Sexual Identity and Gender Identity are Different. Diamond asserts that in order to understand the distinction between gender and sexual identity, one must understand the distinction between gender and sex, two words commonly ... • 3. Personality and Sexual Orientation Essay Hypothesis: Sexual orientation has an effect on one's personality, even at birth. My Initial Hypothesis I believe that sexual orientation is not something that is learned. I believe that from the time we are born, we have imbedded in our minds our sexual preferences. I do not believe that a gay man is gay because of the choices that he has made in his life. I believe that he was born gay, but the choices and his environment have only reinforced it. Attachment is something that affects children when they are first born. When they are born they are attracted, so to speak, to their parents. They see them every day, and their parents give them what they want and when they want it (Bernstein, 2011, p.22). Most people are familiar with the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jamil, Harper, and Fernandez (2009) conducted a study on gay, lesbian, and bisexual minority teens with the purpose of correlating the relationship between sexual development and ethnic identity. "Sexual identity awareness was triggered internally, by youth recognizing their sexual or romantic attraction to members of the same sex," (Jamil, Harper, & Fernandez, 2009). Golombok and Tasker (1996) researched the effect lesbian mothers have on their children's sexuality. They took several lesbian mothers and compared their rearing techniques to those of heterosexual mothers. Several years later they conducted a follow–up study and the results were not so conclusive. Although there were slightly more children that turned out homosexual under the care of the lesbian mothers, there was no direct correlation with the heterosexual mothers. Furthermore, there was absolutely no correlation with boys being homosexual and having a homosexual mother. In Golombok and Taskers study they state that an attraction is actually being in a relationship. Even so, the teens from the lesbian background said that they could see themselves or think about being in a homosexual relationship. Blaise (2010) noted that children know more about sex and sexuality than they let on. She believes that children should not be directly taught about sexual desires and sexuality; rather, ... • 4. Personal Statement On Sexual Orientation In taking answering the questions to the Personal Autobiography on Sexual Orientation, I was able to reflect upon my life up to now as being a gay male from the Midwest. My first memories about really being exposed to sexual orientation would have to have been back in elementary school where sexual orientation was introduced by peers more or less as a name calling, playground name calling sort of thing–I was introduced to sexual orientation in a negative way. In terms of my parents, I would say the messages from there were positive as my grandma has a brother who is gay and has been "out" since the 1980s, so they have gone through the process of acceptance of LGBTQ individuals. When I look at sexuality and my peers, I would say in middle and high school the messages were mixed. Negative messages were how LGBTQ individuals were treated if it was known they were of whichever letter in the alphabet, but also the negative messages came in the often heard usage of the word "faggot" to insult someone. To me, my peers then were exercising this idea of cultural destructiveness, or where they felt they (heterosexual) were the most superior sexual orientation compared to others. I would say the faculty at school when this would occur was more or less culturally blind, or they felt as though the sexual orientation of a student should not matter; however, I felt as though the faculty maybe didn't understand the struggles an LGBTQ person goes through and how painful hearing ... • 5. Sexual Orientation And Identity Of An Individual Identity is vital to every person. Every individual has his or her own identity as well as his own values. It is these values that help describe the individual's identity. The various aspects that make an individual's identity is the gender, physical ability, race and sexual orientation. This dispels out the confusion that exist between sexual orientation and identity of an individual. Sexual orientation is a branch of a person's identity. Sexual orientation is a branch of personal identity that has existed for long though it is likely to be ignored by many people. From the past, in the people's mindset, it was acceptable, normal and proper for men and women to enter into a sexual relationship. Traditionally, sexual attraction between people of opposite sex, commonly referred to as heterosexual orientation, has been common and acceptable. However, with the growth of globalization, technology and influence of western education, there are many changes in the sexual orientation and individuals' culture value. The topic of sexual orientation touches various sections and various people in the society. The community culture, social fabric, religion, political, health and judicial formations have had the influence of sexual orientations. These formations expressed divergent reactions in regard to support, condemnation or protection in favor of different types of sexual orientations. The concept of sexual orientation is wide and complex and encompasses several components. In order ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Sexual Health Class : Sexual Orientation In my sexual health class, we talked about sexual orientation. We had two guest speakers, one was a lesbian that was engaged and a transgender from a man to female. The lesbian speaker talked to us about how her journey went when she came out to her family and friends that she was a lesbian. She said it was not easy, but over the years her family started to support her decision of being with the same sex. For the transgender male to female had a different story. He was the only child and only had one girl in his life which was somewhat not by choice. He was young and a little girl asked him if he was gay and at that time he was in denial so he said no and when she asked will you go out with he was like he did not care, but after one week he got his best friend to break them up. I found that funny because he got his best friend to break them up because he did like that fact that she was a girl. But to make a long story short, he found out that in his middle school years that he loves the same sex and that he saw himself as a woman and not a male. A year ago, he came out to his family and friends that he was gay and that he was going through the change of became a transgender. The person that was most hurt was his father because he was the only child and he was a boy. As he grew up, his father was a bishop and soon became a pastor and it was hard for him to support his new daughter when the Bible says otherwise. It was just interesting that his father has to decide what to do. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sexual orientation has been accredited to changes in construction and purpose of the brain, precisely in hypothalamus of straight and gay men (LeVay, 1991). Though the exploration doesn't find the hypothalamus as the cause ofsexual orientation, it does specify the existence of natural influence initiating the sexual orientation. • 8. The Issue Of Sexual Orientation In the United States of America, 1.8 percent of men and 1.5 percent of women identify themselves as homosexuals (Volokh 1). This means that in a group of one hundred men, around two of them are homosexuals, and the same goes for women. The background regarding sexual orientation is vast, and a lot of different definitions of the concept have been introduced throughout time. Nevertheless, although homosexuality is fairly common in the United States, many people still misunderstand it. The different types of sexual orientations and their difference from other sexual–related terms, such as gender role and gender identity, are all confused by the general population. Sadly, even today, there are people that believe in a right or wrongsexual orientation. Moreover, the origins of sexual orientation are highly discussed and debated by the scientific community, with theories including biological and environmental explanations. The importance of such origins resides in the fact that this nature–nurture debate is capable of changing people's perspectives towards homosexuality, and even though the media has done a great job by transforming any sex–related topic from a taboo to an acceptable conversation point, society still needs to grasp a lot about sexual orientation. Particularly, the fact that sexual orientation is a complex, largely misunderstood human characteristic resulting from a combination of biological and environmental factors that play an essential role in society's ... • 9. Sexual Orientation And The Workplace Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Workplace Nelson Mandela once stated, "To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity." Every human being should have the same opportunities as each other, no matter their skin color, background, sexual orientation, career, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status. We were all given the same human rights when we were born in the U.S., but it seems as if that is gradually taken away from us, as we begin to stop fitting into the picture society has made for us. Many LGBT+ workers are denied their human rights when opening up about themselves in a workplace. Sexual Orientation effects people's stance in the workplace as a result, those whose sexual orientation do not fit the societal norms have unequal; benefits or opportunities, wages, treatment, and lack from non–discrimination protections. Discrimination in the workplace occurs all over the world for many different reasons, yet sexual orientation is one of the least discussed topics. According to Emir Ozeren, "In the workforce, LGBT+ employees are one of the least examined minority groups, even though they are one of the largest groups of people in the workplace".("Sexual Orientation Discrimination in Workplace: A systematic"). Many studies have been made about this topic one of them being a General Social Survey conducted by The Williams Institute that found, "42% of LGBT+ identified people in the nation have experienced sexual orientation discrimination in ... Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Military In September 2011, the United States lifted the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy (DADT), which restricted gay, lesbian, and bisexuals from openly serving in the military. This was the first time in American history in which people of every sexual orientation could serve openly ("11 Facts About," n.d.). This was a momentous occasion for some and not so much for others. For those military members that had served in secret and those members that were firmly against gays and lesbians, this repeal had different meaning. Both groups contained members that have served in the military for years and were products of the Former President Bill Clinton's 1993 "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Despite the challenges and following numerous public debates and congressional hearings, President Clinton has able to reach a compromise in 1993. "The ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue'' policy passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993 was the compromise outcome of Clinton's campaign promise to repeal the ban on military service by homosexuals" (Rich, Schutten & Rogers, 2012). Soldiers would not be actively screened and as long as their sexual orientation was kept personal, there would be no adverse actions taken. Under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" between 1993 and 2011, over 14,000 military men and women were discharged due to their sexual orientation ("11 Facts About," n.d.). The Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy did not explicitly state thatgay, lesbian or bisexual was wrong. In essence by creating a policy that required a person to hide their sexual orientation the US conveyed the message to the military and the civilian population that gay, lesbian or bisexual was still wrong. The 1993 policy did not strengthen communications between military members of varying sexual orientation, in essence if strengthened the barrier by avoiding the subject. • 12. The Importance Of Sexual Orientation There are a lot of ramifications on the ethical justification or condemnation of any attempt to force changes sexual orientation on anyone, by agencies, institutions, or organizations. To untangle this complex, is necessary to understand exactly what 'ethics' represent, and also what sexual orientation is all about, in line with the expectations of the work place. How sexual orientation could be in conflict with ambitions, goals and expectations of agencies, institutions, or organization, and especially to the extent of attracting punishment or suppression is very useful to know. Ethics in relation to the environment or contexts stated above refers to some high standards that must be considered and upheld as morally right and legal. It is also essential to look at it within the context of human rights. "The right to feel safe in our workplaces, educational institutions, public places and homes is a basic human right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights "(Australian Human Rights Commission,2007). Therefore it should evaluated based on whether it is morally, legally and humanly right to enforce punishments or suppressive ideologies and practical mauves on anyone's' sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is "an enduring emotional, romantic, sexual or affection attraction to another person" (Sexual Orientation and Human Rights, 2003) Based on the few clarifications on ethics, morality, legality and human rights, it is obvious that it is ethically wrong to cause ... • 13. Gender Orientation And Sexual Orientation Did you know that gay men and lesbians do not choose their sexual orientation, but rather are born with it? There has been extensive research proving that sexual orientation is caused by many biological factors, whereas there is no solid proof that social factors after birth affect sexual orientation (Swaab, 2007, p. 442). Sexual orientation is already programmed into the brain, with the influence of sex hormones and genes, before a child is even born. The development of sexual orientation is caused by sex hormones, genes, and the brain, which then cause differences in the anatomical body (LeVay, 2011, p.271). Firstly, sex hormones that mainly influence a person's sexual orientation are the levels of testosterone during critical periods of prenatal development (LeVay, 2011, p. 132). If androgen insensitivity syndrome occurs in individuals with XY chromosomes, the gene coding for the androgen receptor is mutated, causing the receptor to either barely function, or not at all (LeVay, 2011, p. 137). This causes their body to not respond to testosterone, so they begin to develop physically as a female. From here on, they are usually raised as girls, and they develop an attraction to males, as well a feminine–typical traits. A condition that can occur in females is called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which is when there are above normal amounts of prenatal testosterone and androgens, which causes a female to grow up with masculinized traits (LeVay, 2011, p. 134). The Biological Of Sexual Orientation The Biological Correlates of Sexual Orientation Prof. Brett Beston PSY354 University of Toronto at Mississauga Adla Begeta 998184539 Date submitted: Sunday, August 10, 2014 The topic of sexual orientation is both sensitive and controversial. This is evident in events, such as the Pride Parade, and also in media, where authoritative figures preach against it and speak of its "sinful nature" (Emmanuele, Blanchard, Camperio–Ciani, & Bancroft, 2010). Sexual orientation exists in various forms, it differs in the way it is viewed by different cultures, and researchers propose different perspectives to explain the emergence of an individual 's sexual orientation. In the discourse of sexual orientation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A pattern emerges where the scholarly literature exploring this topic is largely focused on males. Reason being is that it appears that males are the sex who are predominantly homosexual in their orientation (LeVay & Baldwin, 2012). However, the sensitivity within the discourse of sexual orientation arises when it is debated upon whether one 's sexual preference is innate at birth, hence a force of nature or biology, or if it is a result of culture, nurture or environmental factors (Emmanuele et al., 2010). Furthermore, an experimental design will be proposed to further examine this topic. Comparing the three chosen studies, it is evident that a biological and endocrinological perspective does account for sexual orientation (Kraemer et al., 2006; Manning et al., 2007; Miller et al., 2008). Of the studies that currently exist on this topic, data shows that prenatal testosterone levels are indicative of sexual orientation (Kraemer et al., 2006; Manning et al., 2007; Miller et al., 2008). This paper addresses a topic that is relevant in today 's society; a topic that has, for the most part, been written off as having any scientific roots (Emmanuele et al., 2010). This paper counters that belief and in reading this essay, it will be evident that biology and endocrinology have a much stronger influence on sexual orientation than previously thought. • 17. Sexual Orientation And Gender Orientation Essay e Henry Paper 4 Sexual orientation The theme that we have been focusing on in class for the past two weeks is sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is more complex than just the gender a person is attracted to. Instead sexual orientation is on more of a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum a person can be solely heterosexual and on the opposite side a person can be completely homosexual. This also means that a person can be bisexual if they identify more in the middle of the spectrum. The spectrum allows for all individuals of all different sexualities to have a place on the spectrum. In the films Chasing Amy and XXY we see two individuals who are more fluid with their sexuality and do not identify with being solely homosexual or solely heterosexual. The movie Chasing Amy is about a woman named Alyssa. Alyssa faces many judgments from her friends when she tells them that she is now seeing a man. Alyssa's friends who were all lesbians judged her for now dating a man. This is because they thought that Alyssa was a lesbian. Her friends were judging her because she was maybe becoming a bi sexual and not a lesbian like she thought she had been, "Biphobia, like homophobia, is prejudice based on negative stereotypes. • 18. Sexual Orientation Introduction Homosexuality is defined or characterized as attraction towards the same gender either male or female. It came from the Greek language, where "homo" means the same or similar, hence referring to the attraction between two beings of the same sex. Homosexuality is also referred as a clinical term. Most male homosexuals generally prefer to be called "gay men" and most homosexual women generally prefer to be called "lesbians." Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, alongside bisexual and heterosexual. The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality is an example of normal and positive variation in human sexual ... A total opposite from the idea of the nature concept, a nurtured homosexual person is one that is "made" gay or lesbian. "While I don 't believe the environment can "make someone gay", it certainly can influence their willingness to accept their sexuality and/or to "come out" to others. In communities where intolerance is frowned upon and society in general is "gay–friendly", a gay child is more likely to feel comfortable both with his/her own sexual orientation, and with sharing this information with family or friends. On the other hand, in places where homosexuality is frowned upon or even punished, they are more likely to keep it hidden, or even deny it to themselves. The most controversial questions that arise in relation to sexual orientation are targeted towards how one's sexual orientation forms, what factors go into it and most importantly whether individuals have a choice in this process. According to the American Psychology Association, one's sexual orientation is not adopted via an individual's choice, but rather develops as a result of "cognitive and biological factors" and as well as by interacting with the surrounding environment. In simpler terms, there is a possibility in everybody even you and me being a homosexual. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The Sexual Orientation Of Parents The sexual orientation of parents, once having a child, does not negatively affect the development of their children. In order to first be a parent, one must obtain a child. However, in Florida, gay foster parents were not allowed to adopt the children they fostered due to the Gay Adoption Ban (Goldberg). Homosexuals were not legally able to adopt a child at all until the forty year old ban was lifted July, 2015 by Governor Rick Scott (Associated Press). "Prior to the lifting of the gay adoption ban, female same–sex couples could build their families via DI, as opposed to male couples, whose reproductive options were more limited... surrogacy is very expensive" (Goldberg 117). Adoption is usually a first option for gay couples due to the inability to reproduce through traditional means. The second, and much more expensive options are insemination for women, and surrogacy for men. Without the option of adoption, many gay couples are not able to have the right to raise a child. Furthermore, the difficulties homosexual couples have to acquire a child make it almost impossible to exercise that right. However, once having a child, he or she is cared for just as any other heterosexual couple would care for a child. The development of children raised by homosexual couples is not significantly different from that raised by heterosexual couples. • 21. The Psychology Of Sexual Orientations The Psychology of Sexual Orientations Throughout the history of humans, people have been having sex. It's obviously necessary for the continuation of humans as a species. But it definitely hasn't been for just reproductive purposes. People have been engaging in same–gender sex for probably as long as humans have been around. However, the terms we think of today when we think of different sexual orientations didn't get coined until the 19th and 20th centuries. And with these terms came huge stigma that still exists today. There are many different sexual orientations that people identify as (including heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, as well as many others); the orientations that do not coincide with what people viewed as normal were originally given classification as mental disorders. The most common sexual orientation, regardless of culture, is heterosexuality. This is defined as a sexual orientation in which an individual is generally sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex. A Centers for Disease Control national survey "reported that the percentage of Americans who identify themselves as heterosexual was 90 percent for men and women" (King, 2011, p. 363). This orientation is also considered by many people, cultures and religion throughout history and into the present as being the "normal" and "natural" orientation, with the idea that any deviation from heterosexuality is unnatural, a choice, and a thing that needs to be corrected. Sexual orientation is defined in terms of relationships with others since their identity is based off of their attractions. Sexual orientation can be noted through behaviors such as holding hands or kissing, sharing goals and values, mutual support, and ongoing commitments. Studies of DNA markers on the X chromosomes of siblings has narrowed the search to an area called XQ28. It is made up of hundreds of genes and can be found on the tip of an X chromosome. There has also been some clues that genes are located elsewhere and could possibly have an identical effect on sexual orientation. A team from North Shore University, Illinois, further researched these genes by comparing DNA from 1077 gay and 1231 straight men. They scanned the men's genomes, looking for a single letter difference in their DNA sequences. From this they were able to focus on two genes whose variants seem to be linked to sexual orientation. One of the genes is located on chromosome 13, which is active in a part of the brain called the diencephalon which contains the hypothalamus. Another gene was discovered on chromosome 14 and is mainly active in the thyroid, but also the brain. This gene is called TSHR, it makes a type of protein that clings on to a hormone that stimulates the thyroid. The gene plays an important role in controlling thyroid function. There is some evidence that the brains of homosexuals may be different from those of heterosexual men and women. The differences have been found in the hypothalamus. What is the meaning of sexual orientation? Obviously, it has to be related to sex. It is a way for people to choose their partners to have sex with. Sexual Orientation Of Sexual Minority Health Essay Relatively recent inclusion of sexual orientation measures in a few federal and state health surveillance surveys is enabling the production of population–based information about sexual minority health and its status relative to that of the heterosexual majority. Few studies have been adequately powered to investigate variability in health by sexual orientation, let alone by orientation and other key social characteristics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status); yet research suggests heterogeneity in sexual minority health. Most research on sexual minorities health in the United States has been led utilizing convenience samples. In spite of the fact that the discoveries of this exploration have made huge commitments to the research, information gathered from nonprobability tests have constrained access for general health planning as a result of concerns with respect to determination predisposition and outer legitimacy. The whole subject is hidden in darkness" (Ryu). Since the beginning of time, there have been questions revolving around the topic of sexual orientation. Within the past few decades, homosexuality is becoming more mainstream and socially acceptable as more people begin to examine their gender identity and sexual preferences. Scientists researched to determine the cause of sexual orientation; however, two opposing sides have formed around the issue: nature (inherited genes and biology) versus nurture (the environment). Proponents of nature argue sexual orientation is biological and genetic; whereas proponents of nurture argue sexual orientation is non–biological, environmental, and socially constructed. According to the American Psychological Association, sexual orientation is not a choice; instead "...it emerges from most people in early adolescence with no prior sexual experience" ("Answers to Your Questions About Sexual Orientation andHomosexuality"). Despite this, social theorists and other branches of scientists argue an individual's upbringing directly impacts their sexual orientation. Many proponents of nurture are religiously motivated to establish the morality behind sexual orientation. • 28. Determining The Origin Of Sexual Orientation Determining the Origin of Sexual Orientation Since the United States Supreme Court ruled marriages of gay individuals to be legal in all states in June 2015, some segments of society, including individuals, business and churches, continue to discriminate against gay citizens. Many of these discriminatory opinions and actions are based on individual religious beliefs. Many people feel homosexuality is a choice of lifestyle, whereas others feel that biological factors determine a person's sexual orientation. Homosexuals want the same legal rights as heterosexuals. In addition, if it can be proven that individuals are born gay, then society's attitude could be favorably altered. Poll data indicates that more and more people believe individuals are born gay (See Table 1). Gays would suffer less discrimination if their sexual orientation can be attributed to genetics and biology. Those who oppose homosexuality would feel their condemnation justified if it can be proven the gay lifestyle is a matter of choice. The sociopolitical implications resulting from further definitive research would be of enormous importance; however, years of research have failed to provide a definite origin of sexual orientation. Much more research is needed to close this knowledge gap. Gender orientation is the legal and social status as men and women. Sexual orientation however, is what defines someone as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The best way to explain it is "sexual orientation is whom you go to bed with and gender orientation is who you go to bed as." People of the LGBT community were treated very crudely, even today there is discrimination against people in the gay community. They would be sent to psychiatric wards because the majority of the people back then would say they were sick in their minds and didn't know what else to do with them. It wasn't until 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association ruled out homosexualtiy as an illness when Dr. Evelyn Hooker, who studied gay men, wrote a innovated paper on how homosexual men are just as adjusted as hetrosexual men, if not possibly even more. The LGBT community would also be at risk from being fired from their jobs because of their orientation or they would have their children taken away from them. Health researchers have proposed that sexual orientation is a multi–dimensional aspect of a person's identity that consists of at least three dimensions existing on a continuum (Sell, 1997): sexual orientation identity, sexual attraction, and sexual behavior (Sell & Petrulio, 1996; Laumann et al., 1994; Hughes & Eliason, 2002; Solarz, 1999; Savin–Williams, 2006). • 35. The Theory Of Sexual Orientation Chapter 9 looks at sexuality and how it is perceived around the world. It analyzes how each unique culture recognizes homosexuality, heterosexuality, and bisexuality as a whole. It uses this information to formulate facts, opinions, and ideas in regard to all three of these concepts. This chapter considers gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. All three of these definitions have to do with how we classify ourselves, not how society classifies us. Thus, we should have the freedom to decide what makes us happy, we should not have to conform to societies beliefs. There are five different theories of sexual orientation that are examined and discussed in this chapter. I think it is important to consider each theory and understand why they were created. The first being the structural–functionalist perspective focuses on having safe heterosexual relationships without cheating to ensure safe child rearing and a regular family dynamic for the child to grow up in (300). The second being the conflict perspective focuses on the power difference between the 'straight' individuals and all the members of the LGBT community. The 'straight' individuals are seen as more powerful because they are the norm meaning that are the dominant group. The LGBT community is the community with the least amount of power, especially in 1973 when being gay was considered a mental illness or mental disorder (301). Sexual orientation, also understood as more than sexual behaviors, includes emotional preference as well as an intensity of a spiritual connection with another person. Those who fall on the continuum closer to being attracted to those of the opposite sex, which accounts for the majority, are commonly known as straight or heterosexual. Nurture will say that the environment around a person plays a role, and nature will say that sexual orientation has to do with science. The nurture argument is a common viewpoint because many can never imagine liking the same–sex, but then why is the nature viewpoint scientifically backed up? Before jumping into each argument, sexual orientation needs to be defined. "Sexual orientation is about who you're attracted to and want to have relationships with," according to Planned Parenthood (Parenthood). Sexual orientation is not the same as gender identity. Sexual orientation has to do with who a person is attracted to, and gender identity is about what gender a person identifies with. There are many different labels that people put on people who have a different sexual orientation than what is considered the common, which is a heterosexual relationship. The most common two are gays for men who like men, and lesbians who are women that like women. There are also people who identify as bisexual meaning they like both male and female. Another group that has a different sexual orientation is people who are attracted to more than just the average male and female, they can be attracted to basically anyone, which includes people who are transgender, genderqueer, or intersex. Introduction Sexual orientationism is best described as discrimination or prejudice against homosexuals on the assumption that heterosexuality is the dominant, or normal, sexual orientation. Within society there are many barriers, assumptions, and stigmas placed upon the queer community, numerous of which steam from this heterosexist stance that has become the dominant ideology. This stance has historical significance in trauma, and oppression of those within the sexual minority, and how this can play on representation. Social Location Because sexual orientationism, or homophobia, is something that is unconsciously encouraged since our youth by the media and its lack of representation of the queer community, there is often a lot of work that has to be done internally in order to understand and accept homosexuality, regardless of whether you identify with or simply wish to be an ally. My understanding of my privilege or oppression with sexual orientation comes from many years of internally restructuring my own understanding of societal norms. I had a much easier time of accepting the community from my mother who was always there to encourage my acceptance, and growth not only of, but within the community.
