ISIS is a member ship organization that develops technical
solutions to help our members collect and share knowledge
on animals and their environments for zoos, aquariums and
related conservation organizations.
We are a fast-growing organization with a wide open future.

6. MEDARKS
means
Medical Animal Record Keeping System
The Medical Animal Records Keeping System (MedARKS) is a
DOS-based software used to support veterinary medical
record keeping and animal management.
MedARKS functionality will be available to all ISIS members in
the ZIMS application in 2014.

8. Animal Record Keeping System is used to record core data
for all of the animals in a zoo and to provide overall inventory
management.
This includes husbandry, weights and measures, what animal
is living in which enclosure and transfers in and out of the
institution.
ARKS data is uploaded to the ISIS global database, where ISIS
members can access it in a variety of ways.

This living document is meant as an overview of
best practices to help animal records keepers
create and maintain the best possible animal
records.
As ZIMS is in a constant state of increased
functionality, this document will be updated as ZIMS
improvements can support additional best
practices
12. The Canadian Association of Zoos and
Aquariums accreditation standards include the
following references to animal records.
Animal identification and records must provide
information to enable current and retrospective
investigation of genealogy, life history and
medical events.
Animals must be identifiable whenever
practical, and have corresponding ID numbers.
