1. Woman In Ruins
In Reinforcement theory, attitude changes result from an opinion change produced through
reinforcement in areas such as attention, comprehension and acceptance. This can be related in
the indie film “Woman in Ruins” in the scene where, Maria, after being tortured by her husband,
still submitted to him after discovering that she is pregnant and it is a miracle for the whole
island. After knowing about failed pregnancy and the opinion of the inhabitants of the island that
it is a miracle, Maria changes her attitude, and submitted herself to her husband. Expectancy
Violation Theory sees communication as the exchange of information which is high in relational
content and can be used to violate the expectations of another which will be perceived as either
positively or negatively depending on the liking between the two people. It can relate in the
scene where Pasyon, husband of Maria, learns that her wife can’t remember her. Pasyon, for 7
years, keeps on praying for the return of her wife, but when she returns, her wife can’t recognize
him and can’t remember anything, breaking his expectations.
Blue Bustamante
In Elaboration Likelihood Theory, there are two routes to persuasion -- the central route and the
peripheral route. The central route uses message elaboration, and can produce a major positive
attitude change, while the peripheral route uses six different message irrelevant cues to illicit a
quick response with a minor shift in attitude. It can relate to the indie film “Blue Bustamante” in
the scene where Roger is persuading George to take the job as stuntman. George can’t accept the
job because he is a graduate of Engineering and he fears that it will be embarrassing if his family
learned that he became a stuntman instead of being an engineer. Still, he accepted the job of
being a stuntman because he really had no choice, and he needs to get even to his son because he
missed his birthday. In Social Penetration Theory, relationships develop, communication moves
from relatively shallow, nonintimate levels to deeper, more personal ones. It can relate to the
scene where George helps Ayumi and offered her comfort after a fight to her lover. The next
events is when they started to bump each other along the way, and Ayumi started to wait for him
just to see him and started to have feelings for him. Then George starts to invite Ayumi to a
dinner and talk, and Ayumi learns that George has a wife. In Uncertainty Reduction Theory,
Initial interactions between strangers are characterized by information seeking in order to reduce
uncertainty. Uncertainty is reduced as levels of self-disclosure, nonverbal warmth, and similarity
increase. It can relate to the scene where George meets Saito for the first time, George thinks
Saito hates him because of his cold looks to him, near the end of the movie, Saito confronts him
and praise him for his improvement to his work, after exchanging of words, George ask Saito if
he hates him, and Saito explains his side, and apologizes for all the misunderstanding.
Shift
The social penetration theory states that as relationships develop, communication moves from
relatively shallow, nonintimate levels to deeper, more personal ones. It can relate to the scene
where Estella and Trevor met for the first time, and become a team in a call center. Because they
are a team, they spend their time together every day, until they started to share the same hobby,
which is photography. In Attribution Theory, it attempts to explain causes of behavior. It
2. attempts to explain the causes of people's behavior and attributing or explaining reasons as to
why people behave the way they do. It can relate to the scene where Estella started to have
feelings for Trevor who is a homosexual and she started to avoid him after discovering that
Trevor has a relationship to a guy, that he is still a homosexual.
2. In the movie “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” tells us the importance of our
nationality, that if when time comes that we need to protect or fight for it, we will. In the ending,
Diding make Kulas choose if he will stay for her, or leave and fight for the Filipinos, Kulas
chooses to leave and fight. In the end, Kulas encounters native kids, and told them that they are
all Filipinos. Attribution Theory can be seen in the movie, Attribution Theory is a humanistic
theory. There is not a direct relationship between our behavior and its causes. There can be a
variety of behaviors that are perceived resulting from a variety of causes. Examples are the
scenes where Diding rejected Kulas for the first time because she wants to follow her dreams,
but because Kulas loves her, after being rejected, he still helped her to follow her dreams, and
after discovering the betrayal of her, still, he loves her and accepts her despite of this. The movie
presents the Filipino in many ways, because, there are all different kinds of Filipinos, some are
influenced by the Spaniards, some preserved the characteristics of a Filipino, but overall, it
shows the state of Filipinos during the post era of Spaniards and the beginning of American
Colonization. The way Filipinos adapt after being under the Spanish Government.
