CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS 2013 Francis B. Meguines
BACR 2-2
I’m glad that I had the chance to watch astonishing and inspirational movies prepared by Cinema One Originals 2013. I can see that movies made by Filipinos today are one of a kind, improving the entertainment for audience and it makes me really proud. The movies I’ve watch was really good because most of it pertains the story of Filipinos, from early to modern. Films like Woman in the Ruins, Shift, and Blue Bustamante are some of the movies I really like. Though some of the films left cliff-hangs which leaves the audience irritated, it’s up to us to fill- up the story, whether it will be a happy ending or not. Now, the films I have mentioned are the ones I have chosen to identify and apply theories on the scene I have selected.
First is the Woman in the Ruins where the setting took place in a small island during a post-war era. The scene when Pasyon thought the girl they located near the shore was his wife, who was lost in the middle of the war. He started to call her as Maria (his wife) because there is no doubt, that she was his wife. But the girl lost her memories and couldn’t remember anything. Expectancy Violation Theory is applicable in the scene because Pasyon assumed that his long lost wife was found after several years. After that, Pasyon was enrage because he wanted his wife back so bad that he tortured Maria. She couldn’t fight back because this shows the theory of Elaboration Likehood Model because he shows authority over her. There was also a scene where Sabel was deeply in-love with Pasyon but became disappointed when Maria was later found in the story. She was mad at Maria at first for not knowing anything about but latter on the story they became good friends. The Social Penetration Theory is applicable here.
Next is Shift, it’s about call center agents and about the story of Estella, a boyish looking female protagonist and takes her job opportunities easy. And Trevor, the male protagonist and sooner found out that he’s a bisexual in the story. The scene where Estella and Trevor are strangers but later on, they were joined together as partners on their job as call center agents. They are very different from one another other so its hard for them to communicate to each other. Uncertainty Reduction Theory is for this one because they don’t know each other yet and both of them are different from each other. But sooner in the story they really get along and that’s the reason why Estella fell in love with Trevor. Estella also thought that she might have the chance to have deeper relationship with Trevor when he broke up with his boyfriend but later, her expectation is far from her reality so, Expectancy Violation Theory is also applied here. Then after that Estella kept ignoring Trevor for couple of days after knowing that he got himself a boyfriend and Trevor realized this, so Attribution theory is applicable here.
Last is Blue Bustamante, I find this cool and hilarious because of, the way the acting of the cast was like reality and the jokes are really funny too. This is about a man named George who went overseas (Japan to be specific) to work as an engineer. But unfortunately it was difficult find a job for he doesn’t understand the languange used there. Elaboration Likehood Model is applicable here because he met Roger and offered him a job as a stuntman as temporary for he doesn’t have a job yet. George has no other choice but to take it because his family might think that he’s just gone for his own reasons. Meaning he took the central route in understanding his current situation of his family, knowing the consequence of his actions if he won’t accept the job. While he’s starting to accept his job, Attribution Theory follows. Then sooner he found out that his son was watching the same show he works on, without knowing that his father plays the role of his favorite protagonist in the show. For his family, especially his son and for his profession, are reasons for comprehension about attribution. Another part of the film is when George showed generosity to a lady. The lady recently broke up with her boyfriend, George witnessed it and as a result, he took his jacket off then lent it to the lady. And by that, it gave the reason for the girl to admire him. But later in the story the lady soon found out that he’s already married. She was really disappointed. She taught that he found the guy that will make her happy. Later on she has stop his infatuation on George, which Social Penetration Theory is applicable. You’ll see different layers of the onion as you cut it.
The film “Ganito kami noon. Paano kayo ngayon?” is about during the Spanish- American occupation in the Philippines. The movie revolves in an idea what is to be a “Filipino”. The male protagonist, Nicolas Ocampo or Kulas is a generous person but easily fooled that people takes advantage his kindness. A priest sent Kulas to a quest to find his son so they can be together again. Unwary, Kulas tackled a misadventure that corrupted his innocent mind, but still remained grounded after all his struggles. Kulas seeks the answer to the question about the identity of a Filipino. His councilor told him that the true Filipinos are the descendants of the Spaniards born in wealth in the country. Kulas is confused in this manipulation of nationality. Spaniards claim that they are the real Filipinos, not the folks or so called “Indio”, born inside the country. But it still carved in his mind that a true Filipino serves his country well, and purely loves it with all his heart. In the beginning of the movie Kulas was deceive by the priest, there is also part when Diding (woman admired by Kulas) misled Kulas to her feelings about him. Interpersonal Deception Theory can be associated here. Kulas and Diding can also fall down in Social Penetration Theory, because their relationship only started from a scratch up to having special relationship. Throughout the movie, Kulas met many people in his quest. With their connection, uncertainty for him and for them reduces; and Uncertainty Reduction Theory is applicable here. I’m really impressed on the restoration of this film. While watching this film I realized that old movies such as these are must be seen by other youth because these are really inspiring to watch.

  • 1. CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS 2013 Francis B. Meguines BACR 2-2 I’m glad that I had the chance to watch astonishing and inspirational movies prepared by Cinema One Originals 2013. I can see that movies made by Filipinos today are one of a kind, improving the entertainment for audience and it makes me really proud.
