1.1 “Blue Bustamante”
First of all, sorry ma’am for I just have watched three movies at all including “Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon.” So, I could only make two essays for this item. I have my reasons but I know that would not excuse me. I don’t want to cheat though. Again, I’m really sorry ma’am.
The first scene I pick is where the friends, George Bustamante, and Roger Grace were at the beer garden. They were there to relax a little bit and talk about things. As their conversation goes on, George then told Roger that he is missing his family back in the Philippines and he is feeling guilty. All his family knows is he is there in Japan to work as an engineer and not as a stunt man. Roger replied that it’s okay. The most important thing is that they have a job and they can support their family back home in the Philippines. Out of the blue, Roger got emotional. He said that George has a better place of situation. He said that George’s stay there in Japan has a purpose but Roger, nothing. He admits that he only work there at Japan because he doesn’t want to take care of his grandmother. Roger then on started crying. This scene can be best explained by the Social Penetration Theory. The theory explains that the more time we spend with others, the more likely we are to self-disclose more intimate thought and details of our life. The moment Roger and George share their personal aspects of life says it all.
The second scene I choose is when Roger persuades George to take the job he is offering and that is to be a stuntman for the character “Blue Force” on the television series “Force Five”. For quite a long time, George hasn’t found a job there in Japan. As such, Roger consistently persuades George to finally take the job he is offering. He said that George is fit for the job. At first, George doesn’t want to bite the offer but Roger said that George should just think of the better side of the situation. Yes, he might not be an engineer there in Japan, which is the work he is actually looking for but at least he has a job and can finally support his family. Finally, George then realizes it and took the friend’s offer. This scene can be explained by the Elaboration Likelihood Model. The theory states that there are two routes to persuasion, the central and the peripheral route. The central route involves message elaboration and is used to scrutinize ideas, determine their merit and contemplate possible consequences. The peripheral route provides a quick accept or reject decision without a deep consideration. Roger used central route, by telling George that he is fit for the job and by taking the offer he can finally support his family way back home. Through that, George thought carefully of the job that has been offered to him. He used the peripheral route by saying that at least there is a job offer for his friend.
The last scene I pick is where George ended up as a stuntman. At first, as they arrived there in Japan he hopes to be an engineer for that’s what he studied for. Unfortunately, they’ve been there for quite a long time and yet he can’t still receive responses from the companies he applied with, as such, he was forced to just take the job that Roger is offering him and that is to be a stuntman. This scenario can be explained by the theory of Expentancy Violation. It states that when our expectations are violated, we will respond in specific ways. Since the expectation of
George has him disappointed, he doesn’t have any choice but to take the job offer of his friend so that he would not remain jobless for a very long period of time.
1.2 “Woman of Ruins”
The first scene I pick from the movie is when Sabel, a beautiful maiden who has a feeling for Pasyon, asking her mother, Olga, why Pasyon looks so sad and seems that all his life is focused on making a living. Olga then replied that Pasyon has been that kind of a man since the time her wife, Maria, passed away. This scene can be explained by Attribution Theory, which explains causes of behavior and attributing or explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do. Olga explained to Sabel the melancholic behavior of Pasyon by attributing that behavior to the death of Pasyon’s wife. So there, plain and simple.
The second one is when Pasyon was surprised why his returning wife, Maria, can’t remember even a single memory of her life, most especially her memories as a wife of Pasyon. Maria didn’t even want to engage in a sexual activity with Pasyon, which normally husband and wife do. As a result, Pasyon got mad and maltreated her every day. This can be explained by the Theory of Expentancy Violation. The theory states that when our expectations are violated, we will respond in specific ways. In the movie, Pasyon however, responded in a violent way, maltreating Maria. She treated Maria like an animal, ruthlessly punishing her wife.
The last scene I pick from the movie is when Sabel was tasked by her mother, Olga, to assist the returning Maria, and help her remember the things that Maria should really have to remember. To break the barrier, she then on started questioning Maria about the lady’s personal aspects of life. She asked Maria why she can’t remember anything, even at least a single one. She also asked Maria about how the relationship of the lady going on with her husband Pasyon and a whole lot more. She even asked Maria to help her in doing household chores which she said the responsibility of a wife to her husband. She also toured Maria in their place hoping that Maria would at least remember anything through it, and of course to have a closer relationship with Maria. This scenario can be explained by the Uncertainty Reduction Theory. It states that initial interactions between strangers are characterized by information seeking in order to reduce uncertainty. Uncertainty reduced as levels of self-disclosure, non-verbal warmth, and similarity increase. As I have stated above, Sabel try to break the barrier or uncertainty with Maria by asking questions about the lady’s life, asking Maria to help her out in household chores, and touring Maria around in their place. Later on, Sabel and Maria become friends. That’s how the theory fit the scenario between Sabel and Maria.
2. “Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon”
The movie “Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon” is really a great one. It is a very nationalistic piece of art. The movie tries to awaken every Filipino’s heart or nationalism by showing how weak or fragile the unity of Filipinos during the occupation of the Spaniards. It seems that the film is questioning how unified and nationalistic we are today by showing that a lot of our predecessors before didn’t care on what’s going on in their country. Some Filipinos in the story didn’t know that they are Filipinos, and some even claim that they are Spaniards despite the fact that they are not. In other words, the nationalism or the love of Filipinos before for their country is weak or missing. The movie wants us, Filipinos, to be unified or to be one. It showed the mistakes of Filipinos before and that is not knowing that they are Filipinos, their negligence of what’s happening in their mother land, and the missing nationalism or love for the country. Simply saying, the movie doesn’t want us, Filipinos, to repeat the mistakes that our predecessors have done before. The movie wants us to love our country, to take care for it, and to be united as one. The love for the country means loving their selves as Filipinos, patronizing the works of Filipinos, cognizant of what is happening in our country, and most importantly taking actions to solve the problems existing in our mother land. Our love for our country, Philippines, and our love for our nationality being Filipinos is the name of the story.
The theory that I think was evidently portrayed in the movie is the Expentancy Violation Theory. It states that when our expectations are violated, we will respond in specific ways. In the story, the moment Diding decided to be the wife of Kulas and lived with him, Kulas expected that Diding and him will live happily ever after. However, Diding betrayed him and went to Tibor. As a result, Kulas got mad to Tibor and attacked the man in his house. They fight and Tibor ended up as a loser. Kulas got mad also towards Diding, and although Diding went to back him, in the end, Kulas have decided to leave the lady. That is how Kulas responded when his expectation was violated. Interpersonal Deception theory can also explain the betrayal of Diding to Kulas. The theory states that communication senders attempt to manipulate messages so as to be untruthful, which may cause them apprehension concerning their false communication being detected. Diding obviously lied and betrayed Kulas in the movie. So there, that’s it. Thank you!
