Movie title: Shift
Director: Siege Ledesma
The story of shift is about a call-center agent girl named Estela Alano who falls inlove with her gay friend/ co-worker named Trevor.
In this essay i will discuss three scenes in the movie which can be apply to theories.
The first theory is called Attribution Theory, this theory tackles about the persons behavior and its causes. When Trevor and Monty broked-up Estela hope that she and trevor end up being together, but when another guy came, Estella felt hurt and the reason why she ignore Trevor, she didn’t what to see him, didn’t response on any text or chat messages which Trevor sent to her and didn’t eat and chill with him anymore. With this, the reasons why Estella ignores Trevor attributes to the pain she gained when Trevor has a new guy. This theory is not a numb. This explain the behavior even when person did not say anything about his/her feelings.
The second theory is called Expectancy Violation Theory, this theory is about our expectation did not meet others expectation. Estela felt so comportable with Trevor, she always hooked up with him, felt so secured when she’s with him, even though Trevor has a new guy, Estela still hope that maybe one day they can be together, she positively thinks Trevor gay mind- set will shift to masculine one. Until one day she realized, nothing is worth hoping for, Trevor is a gay, a gay is a gay and always be a gay. Estella expect eventhough there is a small posibility, she try. She violates her expectation to something mean her alot.
The third theory is called Social Penetration Theory, the important element of this theory for me is time, as time goes by the relationship between two person strengthens and will be open for disclosure. The relationship between Estela and Trevor starts just as team members and level- up to partners in investigation, shopping buddy, photo-walk company until they both build trust and feel secured. They exchange problems, secrets, happy thoughts and time. Their time and effort build a bridge to the point they cared for each other, and they can’t live without the company of the other. And most of all to the point that the feeling is mutual but hindered because of sexuality.
The reasons why we study Communication theories is to gain understanding, trust, patience, and freedom to the careless thoughts we have in mind.
2. Movie title: Kabisera
Director: Borgy Torre
The movie Kabisera is about a fisherman and a father named Andres who unintentionally find a two ice box of crystal meth, a illegal drugs. Andres and her wife Dindin agreed to sell this crystal meth for the sake of their family. this movie tackles family, trust and loyalty.
From the movie i picked three scene that is applicable for some communication theories.
The first theory is called Reinforcement Theory, this theory is about the opinion is changed because of attention, comprehension and acceptance of a person. The scene applicable for this is when Aj has been hit and run and need to run a operation. Andres has no enough money for Aj’s operation because he spend it for building a house for her older daugther, until Andres friend Jose came and offers help with a condition, Jose wants Andres to continue His selling of crystal meth so that he can afford to pay hospital bills for his son. Attention and comprehenssion is build, so in order to save his son and to remain their wealthy life he accepted the offer.
The second theory is Elaboration Likelihood Theory this theory have two routes of persuasion the first is the central route while peripheral route is the second. The central route focus on the elaboration of the possible outcome of his/her action while the peripheral route focus on a quick response to the situation without deep consideration. The scene applicable for this is when Dindin didn’t want to sell illegal drugs anymore, she told it to her husband, Andres responed and said that he is doing this for their family, he wants to give his children a good future. In this case Andres use his peripheral route, a quick think on situation, eventhough Andres know the consequences of selling illegal drugs he choose to continue.
The third theory is Social Penetration Theory, this theory is about the process of gaining good relationship, having a good relationship tend to disclose secret information about yourself. The scene applicable for this is when Andres and Jose meet to their favorite place. That is the scene where both of them disclose more secrets about themselves, about their past relationships, plans, they also reminisce their childhood memories. Social Penetration Theory is a human- friendly theory, for me this theory is kept for true friendships.
Theory is the way people think, Communication theory is the effect of person humorous mind.
3. Movie title: Blue Bustamante
Director: Miko Livelo
The movie Blue Bustamante is a comedy film about family, in order to support his family George worked in Japan as engineer, eventually the worked he stayed in fired him that forced him to work as a stuntman for the character blue force, a Japanese TV superhero series Force Five.
I select three scene from the movie and discuss it with theory.
The first theory is Cognitive Dissonance, this theory talks about the way human act conflicting on what they believe in. When Roger persuade George to apply as a stuntman of Blue Force, George is in doubt he know he don’t have a background on what he will be doing, he is not a good actor and nothing to deal with it, he can’t even understand Japanese language, in the end, he accept the job for the reason he dosen’t receive any calls to the job he applied for, he forced himself to do the job for the sake of his family and for the future of his son Kiko. As time goes by, he learn many thing about his work, he like now what he is doing like he never been in doubt before.
The second theory is called Expectancy Violation Theory, this theory occur when we violate our expectation on something. When George is on his way home, he saw Ayumi and he invite her to eat on Filipino restaurant, they talk about many things even though they can’t undertand each other, as seen in the movie Ayumi fell inlove with George in the coffe shop, without Ayumi expect that they can be together. When George done ordering Ayumi accidentally saw the wedding ring of George and she burst into anger and said she dream of being merried with him and having a kids with him. Her expectation of she and George can be a couple has been violated.
The third theory is called Attribution Theory, this theory study the causes and the behavior of a person. At first everyone thinks that Saito is difficult to deal with, the reason is the way he looks towards a person it is sharp, how he communicate, and he don’t even socialize to others. The reason behind this is when he come to talk to George, it was a big mis-understanding about on how people think about him. He look sharp but have a poor eye-sight, the way he communicate is because of the pain he had for his dead friend. Every human behavior has a reason. This theory seek for the reasons behind those actions.
The importance of studying Communication theories is to maintain the good neurons of our mind, it sharpens our rough attitudes to be a better being.
4. Movie title: Ganito Kami Ngayon, Paano Kayo Ngayon.
Director: Eddie Romero
Being a Filipino is not an identity, it is how we live our lives.
The movie Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon teaches us to be true Filipino, not by name or blood-line but in deeds and heart. The message of the movie is not a thought but a question, “Who is the Filipino?, Where are the Filipinos?”. As it seen in the movie, it is about knowing what we are and what we are destined to be. The movie has been a wake-up call for me, i know i am a Filipino but am i truly is? Many of us are guilty of embracing colonialism.
The Filipino is like Nicolas “Kulas” Ocampo, abandoned, innocent, trust-worthy, kind, loving and true. Kulas played a role of Bayanihan, at every turn he helped someone who is in need, he also put his life at risk for the one he loves the most. Nobleness is the characteristic of a true Filipino and then crap happens this generation is so called colonial mind-set Filipinos. Don Tibor is right when he said a true Filipino is the one doing something for the sake of the country, but i strongly object on how how act it, as we seen in the movie Don Tibor act as a spaniard, think like a spaniard, dream like a spaniard and he also work for Padre Corcuera who is a spaniard. I seen also the role of Diding, she clearly opposed the nature of being a Filipina woman, a burlesque Maria Clara. Diding is seductive, self-centered and selfish, unfailingly think on what she want to be, not on what she is destined to be. Seems the director and the writter owns a prophetic mind to see what will happend to our generation.
The theory applicable for this movie is Attribution Theory, this theory explain the causes and why the people behave the way they do. As our nation colonized, may things change, the way we act, the way we taught, the way we fight, everything change. We tend to act like, this is the way our fore-fathers act. The spirit of being a true Filipino has been gone because of how our colonist persuade us, we’ve been a slave for a hundred years and change for the worst. The reason why we behave like this is our cowardness to fight on what have been taken from us. Being a true Filipino is not being captive by others, being a true Filipino is living a freedom. Attribution Theory speaks on why we Filipinos don’t know who we truly are. Many hidden reasons, many unsearchable solutions.
Being a Filipino is like theory, still a mystery.
