Final Paper
Based on the C1 originals movie festival here is your final paper requirement:
1. Identify at least 3 scenes/per movie in at least 3 out of 5 movies (except ganito kami noon,
paano kayo ngayon) presented in the festival and look for a theory that is applicable in
explaining the scene. Elaborate your answer.
Blue Bustamante
The scene in which George learned from his wife June through phone that their child, Kiko is a
fan of Blue Force that George didn't anticipate it coming that he changed his mind and decided to
tell his true job to his family. The idea of his son being a fan of Blue Force made him be more
attached to the character of Blue Force that he even changed the scene that was supposedly
scripted that Blue Force will be killed but he didn't let that happen because of the thought that his
son will feel bad about it. This is an example of Expectancy Violation Theory. The expectation
of George was changed because of the information given to him by his wife.
Social Penetration Theory is the more time we spend with others, the more likely we are to self-disclose
more intimate thought and details of our life. It is the theory that can be associated with
the scene where the drunken friend of George in the name of Roger Grace stated his story why
he was in Japan. He told George that it was because he doesn't want to take care of his
grandmother and that he felt guilty of it. It was Social Penetration Theory because of the long
time they'd been together in Japan that made his friend disclose something about himself. It was
also the attachment he felt as a friend to George.
In the Bicol restaurant, George and a Japanese girl named Ayumi were eating Laing when they
talked in different language they knew that suddenly the girl noticed the ring in the ring finger of
George that made her leave George in the restaurant. George has no idea because he can't
understand what the girl kept on talking before she left. The theory was Attribution Theory
which attempts to explain causes of behavior. It attempts to explain the causes of people's
behavior and attributing or explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do. The girl
left because she concluded that George is married. Ever since, it was obvious that she likes him.
it explains her behavior after seeing the ring.
Woman of the Ruins
Cognitive Dissonance Theory gives a basic explanation for the way humans react when they act
outside of their beliefs. We cannot carryout actions that we believe are wrong, so we either cease
the action or believe that we are right. This is what happen to Pasyon when he tortured Maria for
behaving like an animal after coming back from nowhere. He knew what he was doing was
wrong and not according to his beliefs but he also believed that he was right. This was the
conflict the theory was explaining.
The truth set forth by this theory is that people attempt to “make sense” of interpersonal
situations by reducing uncertainty through seeking information. This is the Theory of
Uncertainty Reduction. The scene when Pasyon kept on asking questions to Maria and Sabel
2. about the features of the people who raped them is one of the example of this theory. Pasyon
tried to look for certain information to trace the criminals. There is also the scene where Sabel
was forced to identify from all the men in sight who she might be able to recognize as culprits.
This is also an example of Uncertainty Reduction Theory.
2. What message does Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon try to present in the movie? How
did the movie represent the Filipino people? What theory did you notice that was evidently
portrayed in the movie? Elaborate.
The message of the Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon is who are really the real Filipinos.
Is this about how they dress, where country they come from, and how they survived from the
colonizers? The movie was spectacular in the sense that it didn't take side to either the tribes who
are already in the Philippines before the word Philippines has ever created and the Filipinos who
identified themselves as Filipinos because they are dressed well, went to school, and lived with
the illustrados. It gives the audience the freedom to think of who are the real Filipinos through
the circumstances that Kulas had been through, the questions about who are the Filipinos, he left
hanging in every situation it was asked to him and the instances where he was dictated that there
are processes to be engaged in to become a Filipino. The movie represent the Filipinos as the
ones who are yet to know that they are Filipinos because of their simplicity in their minds,
actions and well beings. Filipinos are the ones who are truthful in their tribe, not the ones who
acknowledge selectively who are their fellow Filipinos. Filipinos are the ones who see, feel and
recognize every Filipino, they encounter. And that what Kulas has shown in the last part of the
movie. When he told the children that they are also Filipinos. Despite the fact that they are
Tagalog, from the mountains or from Manila as long as they are allowing themselves to be
Filipinos through their actions and camaraderie then they are Filipinos. The theory that was
evidently presented in the movie is the Uncertainty Reduction Theory. The story showed how the
uncertainty of who are the Filipinos had been solved by Kulas through his experiences,
circumstances he'd been through, people he met, and places he had been are the information that
made him certain of who are the real Filipinos. Every uncertain was reduced by the time Kulas
was able to understand the things around him. It shaped the mind of Kulas on how he would be
able to identify who are the Filipinos and it is through the heart. It was through the heart because
being a Filipino, it was the heart that can seek the heart of a Filipino.
