CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS 2013 FINAL PAPER THEORIES
1. CINEMA ONE ORIGINALS 2013 FINAL PAPER
Buan, Franchesca Olivia R.
BACR 2-2
I. Kabisera, Shift, and Blue Bustamante are the 3 movies that I have chosen among the 5 other movies (except Ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon?). Here are the corresponding theories for 3 scenes of each movie.
KABISERA
This movie is directed by Mr. Borgy Torre, received an award as Cinema one Originals Best Picture in 2013. The first scene is when Andres found two floating crates while he was fishing and he went home to tell his wife about it. Andres decided to sell drugs because of his wife’s opinion that their family will benefit from it, with this they can finally send their son to college and buy their needs. Both are aware that this is illegal, Andres had an attitude change as Reinforcement Theory of Hovland, Janice, and Kelly describes, agrees to her decision. The next scene is when his son wanted to study college in the University of the Philippines and his older sister happens to live nearby yet his father refuses his decision left his son no choice but to obey and respect his father’s will because of his authority. This scene shows Elaboration Likelihood Model for his son made his decision using the peripheral route. The last scene describes Social Penetration Theory by Altman and Taylor, when Andres together with his best friend and the policeman are drinking win, singing and Andres shares the story of their friendship that before he was just admiring Jose for who he was, he looked up and followed him then as time goes by they became so close friends more like brothers and they talked about the problems that they had been through together brought Andres to burst into tears because of the kind friendship that they possess.
SHIFT
This movie is written and directed by Siege Ledesma, about two call center agents namely Estella and Trevor searching for what they want in their lives. Estella is a frustrated singer, artist, and photographer while Trevor is her gay team mate in the company they both worked for. The first scene is Social Penetration Theory by Altman and Taylor when they started knowing each other in order to motivate Estella and they started having meals together, take pictures and going to places when they bond which made them closer to each other. They even have their own “call sign” or term of endearment. The next scene is when they are eating at a restaurant and Estella was expecting that Trevor will confess his feelings for her already but it turned out that Trevor was in love with his new foreign boyfriend leading to Estella’s broken heart, Expectancy Violation Theory is present in this scene because Estella’s failed expectations.
2. The last scene describes Attribution Theory because when Estella was ignoring Trevor, he wondered why, he thought he did something wrong or that offended Estella.
BLUE BUSTAMANTE
This movie is directed by Miko Livelo, about engineer, father, George Bustamante and his journey to Japan in search of work in order to provide for his family. The first scene was when he was in Japan he met Roger he is also a Filipino, who is working as a set designer in the TV series entitled Force Five. They share the same experience as an overseas worker and spend more time together they became good friends who are there for each other, in this Social Penetration Theory can be applied. George tried to apply for a job as an engineer but failed to receive their confirmation in time to remit money for his family. Disappointed as he is, putting his family’s sake the priority he decided to take the job as a stunt double of Blue Force as Roger referred to him. His expectations are violated like what is described in the Expectancy Violation Theory. He became one of the actors in the show Force Five. The last scene is when George and his wife had a conversation through phone call, his wife was asking about what is he doing there in japan and George tried to lie about his new job because he was afraid that he will disappoint his family especially his only son for having such a silly job, Interpersonal Deception Theory describes this scene because George lied to his wife about his job in order to protect his pride or his ego.
II. GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON?
Basically the movie speaks about what it takes to be a true Filipino. It is not about the tragic ending of the protagonist’s love affair, not about the friar’s son, or the revolution. It is about what our country and our fellow countrymen experienced in the hands of the colonizers who want gold and glory. The suffering that had to be endured especially to those who are innocent just to gain freedom that we are now experiencing. Because of the brave known and even unknown heroes who fought to death. For it was their love for this country and its future generations to come they had put into their heart and mind “ this is worth dying for”. According to what I can understand from the movie, A true Filipino is someone who possess the love for his fellowmen and his country. A kind of love that can serve as a torch that aims to enlighten others with its light and warmth. Social Penetration Theory describes this movie because Kulas discovered the true meaning of what a Filipino is like he was peeling an onion, with several layers that unfolds one experience and realization at a time. As a saying goes, you must know enough to understand and experience will be your guide.
