2. 1. Identify at least 3 scenes/ per movie in at least 3 out 5 movies (except Ganito
Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon) presented in the festival and look for a theory
that is applicable in explaining the scene. Elaborate your answer.
On Screen: SHIFT
The first movie I've chosen is Shift, directed by Siege Ledesma. The first scene is
when Estela and Trevor got to know each other because of being in the same group in their
Call Canter Job. As they get to know each other, they self-disclose their true personalities as
Trevor admitted that he's gay while Estela admitted that she never had a boyfriend since
birth. Aside from this, they also talked about their past relationships, goals in life and their
common interests. In this case, we can say that the Social Penetration Theory exists. As the
theory explains and interprets, as relationships develop, communication moves from
relatively shallow, non intimate levels to deeper, more personal ones. The more time we
spend with others, the more likely we are to self-disclose more intimate thought and details
of our life. Nowadays, gender and identity is merely a big deal to disclose especially to
someone you just met. That's why the theory clearly reflects to the first scene. In the second
scene I've chosen, Trevor and Estela hanged out more often which resulted in more intimate
moments. They've shared a lot of interests and experiences that made Estela assume that
Trevor has also the same feelings for her. She also felt some hints on the way Trevor acts
while he's with her which made her intuition stronger. She expected a lot from it, and she
was real hurt when she found out that Trevor sees another guy. I identified the Expectancy
Violation Theory. In this case, Estela perceived her expectations negatively because his
feelings for her aren’t mutual. As the theory explains and interprets, it sees communication as
the exchange of information which is high in relational content and can be used to violate the
expectations of another which will be perceived as either positively or negatively depending
on the liking between the two people. When our expectations are violated, we will respond in
specific ways. If an act is unexpected and is assigned favorable interpretation, and it is
evaluated positively, it will produce more favorable outcomes than an expected act with the
same interpretation and evaluation. And lastly, the third scene I've chosen is when Estela
started to get rid of Trevor. As he tried to reach out for her, Estela would always reason out
that she's busy and all that. But as Trevor tried to find out what's really wrong with her
attitude towards him, he found some pictures of Estela hanging out with a guy friend. He
now assumes that Estela isn't really busy, but is "busy" hanging out with another guy instead
of him. In this scene, Interpersonal Deception Theory exists. It explains that the senders
attempt to manipulate messages so as to be untruthful, which may cause them apprehension
concerning their false communication being detected. Simultaneously, communication
receivers try to unveil or detect the validity of that information, causing suspicion about
whether or not the sender is being deceitful. It shows the third aspect of deceptive messages
which is the Ancillary message which includes both verbal and a nonverbal aspect of
communication which often reveals the truthfulness of a particular message.
3. On Screen: BLUE BUSTAMANTE
The second movie I've chosen is Blue Bustamante, directed by Miko Livelo. In the
first scene, Elaboration Likelihood Model exists. The two routes to persuasion which
are the central route and the peripheral route are identified. The central route involves
message elaboration and is used to scrutinize ideas, determine their merit and
contemplate possible consequences. The peripheral route provides a quick accept or
reject decision without deep consideration. George Bustamante didn't agree right
away to the job offering of his friend Roger for being a stuntman in a TV Show called
Force Five. It shows the central route. He had a hard time thinking what his family
would say but because of the urgent need for a source of income, the peripheral route
provided two of the six cues -- social proof and scarcity, which gave him a quick
accept to the decision. In the second scene I've chosen, Attribution Theory is
identified. It attempts to explain the causes of people's behavior and attributing or
explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do. George Bustamante
forgot his son's birthday and that made the boy disappointed of his father. Miko, his
son, didn't showed interest of talking to him when he once called from Japan, which
George thought is the result of him being forgetful of the special occasion. He's been
very close to his son and as the theory interprets, there is no direct relationship
between our behavior and its causes. There can be a variety of behaviors that are
perceived resulting from a variety of causes. The third scene I've chosen is when
Ayumi found out that George is married when she saw him wearing a wedding ring.
The Japanese Girl was overwhelmed of George for giving her his jacket in a coffee
shop, and she eventually liked him after coincidentally bumping to each other a few
times. She was expecting that George likes her because of his actions trying to
befriend to her. But when she found out that he's married, her expectation was
violated negatively and that made her upset. We can identify the Expectancy
Violation Theory which explains that when our expectations are violated, we will
respond in specific ways. If an act is unexpected and is assigned favorable
interpretation, and it is evaluated positively, it will produce more favorable outcomes
than an expected act with the same interpretation and evaluation.
4. On Screen: WOMAN OF THE RUINS
The third movie I've chosen is Woman of the Ruins, directed by Keith Sicat. The first
scene I've chosen manifests Uncertainty Reduction theory, Axiom 1. It explains that
initial interactions between strangers are characterized by information seeking in
order to reduce uncertainty. Uncertainty is reduced as levels of self-disclosure,
nonverbal warmth, and similarity increase. Axiom 1 explains verbal communication:
as the amount of verbal communication between strangers increases, the level of
uncertainty decreases, and, as a result, verbal communication increases .In the scene,
Isabel tried to befriend of Maria after she suddenly appeared one day, unconsciously
in the seashore. Isabel would always come to her house to help her remember
memories and as time goes by, Maria became confident of telling Isabel stories about
herself. In the second scene, Attribution Theory existed. Pasyon became eager of
knowing why his wife acts like she doesn't remember anything and that made him
seek advice from a scholar named Sol. The reasons he gave made Pasyon think that
maybe it's the result of Maria being vanished for 7 years. Sol also said that it is a
miracle and that there is a reason why she came back. As the theory explains and
interprets, it attempts to explain the causes of people's behavior and attributing or
explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do. There is not a direct
relationship between our behavior and its causes. There can be a variety of behaviors
that are perceived resulting from a variety of causes. And lastly, the third scene I've
chosen manifests Expectancy Violation Theory. The scene shows how glad Pasyon
was after having her wife back again. He suffered and prayed everyday for the
comeback of his wife. When she finally woke up after found unconscious on the
seashore, she doesn't remember anything. It made him frustrated and depressed that
caused violence and sexual desires towards Maria. Pasyon had been longing for his
wife and thought of her being an amnesiac made him upset and violated his
expectations negatively. The theory interprets that when our expectations are violated,
we will respond in specific ways. If an act is unexpected and is assigned favorable
interpretation, and it is evaluated positively, it will produce more favorable outcomes
than an expected act with the same interpretation and evaluation.
5. 2. What message does Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon try to present in
the movie? How did the movie represent the Filipino people? What theory did
you notice that was evidently portrayed in the movie? Elaborate.
The movie tries to present the message that Filipinos became strangers and slaves of
their own country because of the invasion of the colonizers. We were deceived of
what a Filipino truly means and that made us fooled by other people. Kulas pictures
the naivety and being kind-hearted of Filipinos which the invaders took advantage of.
But one thing they cannot take away from him is his Filipino identity.
As Kulas wandered, he became confused of the different definitions of 'Filipino'. He
met a Chinese merchant who consider himself a Filipino, because he was born in the
country. It made him think that being raised in the country makes you one. Kulas
represents gullible and kind-hearted Filipinos. Tibor represents how other Filipinos
are brain-washed by the invaders that one must be a worthy and valuable person
before called a Filipino. And the revolutionists represent how brave and strong we are
in fighting our right to return our own country from the hands of other races.
In the end, Kulas realizes that a Filipino is someone who loves or will love the then
newly created Filipino nation. It is not enough to be born in the country in order to be
called a Filipino. One should also love his country through actions.
The theory I've noticed that was evidently portrayed in the movie is the Attribution
Theory. As the theory explains, it attempts to explain the causes of people's behavior
and attributing or explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do. Being
a humanistic theory, there is not a direct relationship between our behavior and its
causes. There can be a variety of behaviors that are perceived resulting from a variety
of causes. The movie represents different classifications of Filipinos. It can be
explained that these diversion of actions reflects the causes of our country being
invaded by colonizers. There are Filipinos who would risk their lives just to save our
freedom because they don't want to be slaves of their own land. There are these
Filipinos who would pretend to be intelligent just to fit their selves in the social
pyramid. Every character in the movie behaves the way they do because there are
reasons, and they have to deal with it to be able to survive the invasion era.
