This document outlines a social action workshop focused on completing public information film (PIF) videos by an upcoming deadline. Students are instructed to identify unfinished work and set goals to complete during the workshop. They review progress, with most still in planning or filming stages. Examples of effective PIF techniques are discussed, like shocking audiences and clearly communicating impactful messages. Students update task lists and set new goals to work towards in their PIF production during the allotted workshop time.
3. Today
You need to work towards completing your social action
videos.
You will have both of this afternoon’s lessons to work on
your videos planning & post-production, however you will
need to make good use of this time.
4. By the end of the lesson, you
• MUST identify what work you still need to complete before
the deadline for your Public Information Film.
• SHOULD work towards completing a goal you have set
yourself for planning / editing today.
• COULD apply editing techniques to complete a rough
draft of your Public Information Film.
5. What progress have we made?
Hands up if….
• Planning completed?
• Filming started?
• Filming complete?
• Editing started?
• Editing complete?
6. When is the deadline for your public
information film?
What do you need to hand in?
• The final video (on YouTube)
• Your All-in-one planning
• By Friday 22nd June (12.15pm)
7. You have a lot of work to complete
between now and Friday 22nd
On the paper in front of you list everything you need to get
done:
• Finish filming
• Import all footage into FCPX
• Look through clips and get rid of bad shots
• Put together a rough edit on timeline
• Find music
• Colour correct
• Add titles and a graphic
• Fix audio
• Record voiceover
• Export the final PIF video.
8. Task 1: where to start
Using your list as a guide, set yourself some realistic but
challenging goals you can complete this lesson.
• Storyboarding & shots lists
• Importing your footage and starting your edit.
• Booking equipment & organising filming locations
• Writing proposals
• Sourcing music & sound effects.
On your list, mark a star * next to your goals.
9. Task 2: workshop
I will give you 3 hours this afternoon to work on your PIF
production, as well as next Fridays lesson, but you need to
use that time wisely.
oIf you need to film then continue planning, producing your
shots list, storyboards, location recce’s, booking
equipment, sourcing props.
oIf you have finished filming you should all be working
independently on your video edit.
Start working towards the goals you’ve identified. I will
come round and offer support.
10. Break
Did you meet your goal?
Pick a new one.
If not, why not? What do you need to do differently next
lesson?
11. What makes a good PIF?
12. What did you think of this PIF?
• What did you like?
• What did you dislike?
• What was the films message?
• What techniques did the film-makers use to get across
that message?
• What impact did the film have?
13. Good PIF’s:
• Shock the audience
• Make the viewer understand
• what the issue is
• why they need to change
• How they can change
• Short run-time
• Well filmed (the shots are framed well, in focus, well
exposed).
• Well edited (well paced, story is easy to follow, music &
sound effects used)
• Message communicated clearly, with impact.
14. IMPACT
What does the word ‘impact’ mean?
• Impact is forceful contact, it is a collision between two
things.
• To have an impact means we influence someone.
15. How is your PIF going to collide with the
viewer? How will it influence them?
16. Last lesson
You wrote out a list of tasks you still need to complete for
your PIF, then set yourself a goal.
Hands up who completed their goal?
Well done, set yourself a new one. Every step forwards
gets you closer to completing your PIF.
Hands up who didn’t?
Why not? When did you aim to have it finished by? What
problems have you faced?
17. Task 1: revisit your list
Update your list of tasks, and either set yourself a new
realistic but challenging goal, or continue to work towards
your earlier goal. It could be:
• Rough cut complete?
• Storyboarding?
• Shots list?
• Colour correcting?
• Music & audio synced to the visuals?
On your list, mark a star * next to your goals.
18. Task 2: workshop
