This document summarizes the production process for a music video over 5 weeks. In week 1, research was conducted on progressive rock music videos to inform camera techniques and audience. Week 2 involved writing a proposal and initial plans for 3 potential music video ideas. Storyboarding and a shot list were created in week 3 to plan filming. Week 4 was spent filming using different camera angles and a drone. Week 5 consisted of evaluating the research, planning, filming and finished music video by comparing it to the initial plans and other professional music videos.
2. Production reflections
• This proforma is to record how you worked on your production
• You should complete this each week during production
• Consider all relevant areas that you covered that week
• Think about what worked/what didn’t work/how you can improve
and actions for the following sessions/weeks
3. Process – week 1
• Week one focused on researching
videos and conventions of the
Progressive Rock genre. I did this by
searching videos of some well known
songs from the genre on Youtube and
taking notes on the visuals and how
they complemented the audio. I also
researched general conventions of the
genre using TV.Tropes. I feel like my
research greatly helped with the rest of
my coursework as it immediately gave
me an idea as to what I could utilise in
my own music video as well as what
kind of audience I should be appealing
to. I also conducted some experiments
for different camera techniques to
both practice ideas I already had as
well as see if there were any new ideas
I could use. To do this I borrowed a
camera from college and formed a
small group with which I could
experiment with more complex
techniques.
4. Process – week 2
• In week 2 I began my planning,
which included writing a
proposal and my initial plans.
These let me outline my
project and allowed me to
write notes for details and
techniques I could include in
my production.
• I made 3 different ideas for a
music video each for a
different song. I tried to have
each song be from a different
genre as to give me more
variation between choices.
5. Process – week 3
• In week 3 I began my storyboard
and shot list so that I could have a
simple plan to follow when I film.
My shot list went into depth about
what type of shots I would use as
well as their lengths and any
special techniques or equipment I
would be using. My storyboard
gave a visual representation of the
aesthetic aspect of the video,
showing the setting as well as any
props and costumes. I created my
shot list in conjunction with my
storyboard, deciding on what kind
of shots I wanted to do as I
created them. Whilst I simply used
Word for the shot list, I created
the storyboard on Photoshop as
digital art using my drawing tablet.
6. Process – week 4
• Week 4 began the actual filming
of my video. This required me to
set a date and time at which
camera crew, cast and equipment
would all be available. Many
different camera angles were
needed during the filming, most
of which were achieved by setting
up the camera on the tripod in
different ways. However, for shots
from above I used a drone, which
also allowed me to create smooth
moving shots. It was important for
me to ensure that the drone’s
shadow wasn’t in the shot as this
would break immersion.
7. Process – week 5
• In week 5 I began to write my evaluation
for my Pro Forma. This included
evaluating my research and initial plans,
which I did so by comparing them to my
final product. My evaluation goes into
depth about the pros and cons of my
research and why I chose to use it said
research in my project. I then evaluated
my planning by looking into how much
preparation I had for my filming. When
evaluation my actual music video, I
compared it to the aforementioned pro-
formas, looking at any changes that I
made and why. I also evaluated the
techniques and equipment I used by
looking at how effective they were. I
made sure to compare my music video
to real music videos as well in order to
look for any similarities and differences. I
looked into how my video
