The document provides information about an upcoming film production challenge called "Jump Cuts". Students will work in small groups to write, plan, film, and edit a 2-minute short film based on the theme of "hunter" that is due in mid-November. They will need to submit pre-production materials like a script, storyboards, shooting schedule. The short film must not contain any dialogue. Students are instructed to come up with 3 simple story concepts and develop a 7-point narrative plan for each during the workshop.
2. TODAY
In todays workshop you will be;
• applying your knowledge of concepting to create and
develop 3 ideas for screenplays
• Conducting initial research for each of these ideas.
3. BY THE END OF TODAY, YOU
MUST use idea generation strategies to
create 3 story concepts
SHOULD be able to develop your 3 ideas by
conducting research
COULD evaluate your ideas effectiveness
using peer assessment & reflection
4. SYD FIELD
Famous American screenwriter Syd Field
came up with a way to describe a films
concept in its simplest form.
5. OVER THE NEXT 3 WEEKS
You will work in small groups to produce a short
film based around a theme.
7. WHAT IS JUMP CUTS
Jump Cuts is a three week film production challenge.
You have until Mid November to plan, organise and film a 2
minute short film.
You will need to work in small groups, and work hard outside
of your class time.
8. JUMP CUTS RULES (1)
What do I need to do?
You must submit:
• Script
• Storyboards
• Shots list
• risk assessments,
• Shooting schedules
• consent forms.
9. JUMP CUTS RULES (2)
What do I have to make?
Jump Cuts is a horror and thriller film festival. Your film will
need to be influenced by one (or both) of these genres.
This years entries must be based around the theme “PREY”,
but how your story does this is up to you.
Your film must contain NO DIALOGUE.
10. JUMP CUTS RULES (2)
This years entries must be based around the theme…
HUNTER
11. JUMP CUTS
What next?
Get in groups of no more than 3. You will need to come up with
an idea & pitch it to your group todaY. The group will vote for 1
idea that they want to make.
Remember to keep your ideas realistic & attainable. 5 minute
films should not have a lot of dialogue, exposition etc... Think
short and snappy.
12. JUMP CUTS
“What’s this about working outside of class time?”
If you want something you have to work at it.
You need to have filmed this by mid-November
That means you have complete pre-production by the end of next week.
That means putting in some time outside of class.
13. WHAT NEXT?
Go away and begin planning your idea. Start with a concept then
develop it, add a beginning and ending. Whats the moral of the
story? How does it tie in?
It doesn’t have to be the best idea ever – you only have 2- 5
minutes to tell your story.
The simpler the story the better.
Simple stories can be the smartest stories.

doing?)
2. INCITING INCIDENT (something happens that sets the story in
motion)
3. Plot point 1 (twist)
4. ACTION / DRAMA (throw obstacles at your character)
5. Plot point 2 (twist)
6. RESOLUTION (the final showdown)
7. ENDING
