2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started, make note of a
minimum of 5 – add extra slides, screenshot the video and in bullet point
note down info in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
The styles of camera work in the music videos really
depend on the theme of the song or the video itself.
In ‘I lived’ there is a lot of shaky cam and close up shots
which feel like they are there to add a documentary style
feel to it.
In ‘Guiding Light’, the video has a lot of high-angle
establishing shots of the beach which adds a very artsy
and dynamic feel to it.
In ‘Gone, Gone, Gone’ the video has lots of cuts to old
footage to create a very emotional style of video that has
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. FOREVER AGO-
WOODLOCK-CONCEPT 1
One of my ideas for a music video features the song ‘Forever Ago’ by Woodlock.
The video will start off with a teenage boy on a bus looking out the window,
looking sad. He puts on his earphones and whilst searching through his phone for
a a song to play he selects ‘Forever Ago’ by Woodlock. As the song starts playing
the camera zooms in he closes his eyes and it fades to him in a café at school
sitting with his friends, he looks across and sees a girl looking at him. He smiles
back at her. Then it would cut to a shot of her looking at what food to buy and he
would walk up behind her doing the same thing. They would look at each other,
smile and then introduce themselves. Then there would be a short montage of
them going out, having a good time, and possibly kissing. Then the boy would do
something stupid and it would upset the girl and they would end their
relationship. The boy would then see her the next day sitting with another boy.
He would then stand up, walk away, bump into someone and then wake up with
the bus hitting a bump in the road. It would be night at this point. He would look
in the window and see a reflection of the girl sitting in a chair opposite him. He
would turn around but she wouldn’t be there. But he looks back and sees her
sitting at the back of the bus. He gets up to walk towards her but as soon as he
stands up she is not there. He arrives at home and walks up to his room. The light
in there fades into multiple neon colours and black in between. As he stares up at
his light with every other colour that flashes the girl appears sitting next to him
staring up at it as well, but she only appears three times. The camera would zoom
out from his room so we can only see the lights flashing from his room.
7. FOREVER AGO-
WOODLOCK-CONCEPT 2
The second concept I had was a stop motion animation
of a boy lying on grass looking up at the night sky. The
camera would pan up to the moon and it would split into
a boy and a girls face. They would kiss and it would show
them going on a date, ice skating and the man would
propose. They would then be shown getting married, she
would become pregnant and then be seen with the child
a few seconds later. The couple would be seen have
dinner with the baby, feeding it, the mother would then
sing it to sleep. The baby would then grow and be seen
being carried on the fathers back, then they would be
seen fishing together. But they would then come home
and the mother would be angry. The boy would run up to
his room, shut the door and cover his ears. The illusions
in the sky would then disappear. The mother would then
come to the boy lying on the grass and as the camera
zooms in a tear would then appear on the boys eye and
the video would end.
8. FOREVER AGO-
WOODLOCK-CONCEPT 3
My third idea for a video is a documentary style film
where I discuss my autism and how I constantly feel
different from other people. I would include a black
and white filter to give it a more narrative and
emotional feeling and would metaphorically
represent how the world looks to me sometimes. It
would partly be filmed at college or at home. It
would feature myself and a few other friends. With
the song playing in the background this should
make the video feel really emotional and personal. I
could use title cards to talk about my feelings so I
don’t have to interrupt the song by talking. I want
this video to really reach out to autistic people so
they know I can understand how they feel at the
moment.
9. POTENTIAL SONGS
Forever Ago by Woodlock
• The song is very slow, acoustic and emotional. It has
this very moving feeling with the lyrics and the pacing.
The Night We met by Lord Huron
• The song is possibly the saddest and most depressing
song on this list. I wanted to add some serious emotion
into the videos, whichever one I chose.
I lived by One Republic
• For this song I would have done a montage of me doing
some of my favourite things to do. I.e. Climbing a
mountain, canoeing, cycling and hiking in dalby forest.
10. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
For techniques in the video, I could use a black and white
filter for the entire video to give it an artistic and more
creative vibe. I could also include close ups and a lot of
shaky cam to help show I see the world. I could try
filming at different angles to make shots look creative
and add to the vibe I am trying to send off. I will include
lots of establishing shots of the country side, locations
I’m filming etc. Every now and then the video would cut
to me holding up title cards explaining how my feelings
and dropping them to show another.
11. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
The genre for the video is sort of an
indie/documentary style film, so to appeal to this
audience I will include documentary style camera
work and editing. To appeal to the indie audience I
am including a song by an indie band and using
footage of sunsets and natural places such as
ponds, forests and fields etc. This video is mainly
going to appeal to autistic people so that theme will
be heavily used and be the main theme of the
video.
12. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
For my video I am going to do an indie style
documentary with no dialogue about my autism. The
video will begin with me waking up and getting out of
bed all in a black and white filter. To get the concept
over to the audience I am going to talk to them by
holding up title cards, playing a few clips and coming
back to the cards. I will show what my daily routine is
and possibly a few of my own hobbies. On the song will
start to play as soon as I show the first card. It would
then cut to me walking towards my locker at college,
then cut to me doing work in class, talking to other
classmates. I would be shown eating with them at the
cafeteria. It would then cut to me leaving my house on
my bike and riding through my village, up and down
country roads, and finally a few shots of me walking
towards a pond
13. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
•I’m not restricted by locations.
•Because its black and white I am not restricted much
about the time of the day.
•With it being documentary style it will be easier to film
and multiple characters will not be needed.
•I can learn more about this style of filmmaking.
•It will be easier to get my message across to the viewer.
14. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
•It restricts different camera angles and shots when the
boards are being used.
•Social areas are difficult to use for filming
•Could possibly limit my editing skills
•Continuity with the height of the boards might make it
look very unsmooth.
•Relying on other people to show up for filming or ware
the same clothes in different shots.
15. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Forever Ago/Woodlock
Woodlock are a band based from Melbourne. They
became popular by performing on the streets of odd
capital cities. They are similar to other indie associated
bands such as The Paper Kites, Boy and Bear and Temper
Trap. They consist of three members; Zechariah Walters,
Ezekiel Walters (New Zealand)and Bowen
Purcell(Australia). The Walters brothers met Purcell whilst
travelling overseas and the acoustic folk band known as
Woodlock was created.
Woodlock are compared to other bands such as; The
Paper Kites, Boy and Me and The Temper Trap.
Woodlock usually perform acoustic, indie folk music,
since that is really the only genre that perform it may as
16. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
•The song is called ‘Forever ago’ and with lyrics such as
“I’ve been waiting all this time, I miss you” the song feels
like its about someone who is missing someone and is
waiting for them to come back after they went away.
•The genre is acoustic indie folk. The song is very slow
and gives off an emotional vibe in certain parts.
17. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
I will use a black and white filter for the whole video as
well as shaky cam, so the documentary style can line up
with the indie folk vibe that the song has. I might also
include some shots of guitars to keep in touch with the
vibe as well as some sunsets, fields and forests so it
includes something nature related and feels more indie.
Hopefully all these conventions will match well with the
song and the tone doesn’t feel mumbled up and
everything fits well.
19. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
22. LOCATIONS
I will be using college to film a few certain shots for the video.
Mainly shots of walking down the corridors and me opening my
lockers and if necessary
I will be using a local pond in my village, the pond has a shed and a
raft bridge that goes out onto the pond. The place is old, wooden
and can be slippery. The chances are I could slip on the bridge and
fall in. To prevent this I will stay away from the edges so there is
less of a chance of me falling in.
The pond is surrounded by a lot of nettles and I am very likely to
get stung. To prevent getting stung I will wear full body covering
clothing (i.e; boots, trousers, jumper). This way I will also be warm
whilst filming and won’t be uncontrollably shaking.
To ensure I am able to film at this location I will check the weather
to make sure it isn’t raining, therefore the camera equipment
doesn’t get wet and neither do I.
I will be able to access the pond at all possible times for filming.
23. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
To make the video I will need a camera, which will not be
a problem since I have many at home and I can bring one
of them in or even film on my phone.
I will need a tripod to keep the camera steady, which I
also have at home so I will bring it in at any time.
24. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I will edit the video on my laptop using movie maker. I
will bring my laptop into college and work on that
instead of using the main computers. I will not be
needing any other facilities from the college. I am fairly
confident I will be able to edit the video by myself.
25. PERSONNEL
I will mainly be working independently but sometimes
with other people. All I will need other people to do is
hold the camera for me. Since it doesn’t really matter
who does what behind the scenes but I will need
someone to hold the camera.
No actual acting will be needed for the video. Since the
majority of it will be people doing normal everyday
things. I will not have to pay them nor feed them since
we won’t be needing to travel anywhere far.
I will ask friends to join me in filming some scenes even
if its not important that I need someone there.
26. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
No extra props will be needed. Since this is a
documentary it will not be needing anything
that would not be used in real life. I will wear
my normal staple clothes. I may use
headphones in certain scenes
If it is raining I will wear a jumper/hoodie or a
rain coat. If am inside I will wear normal inside
clothes. What I wear depends on the weather
and temperature of the area. The same will be
said for other people that may appear in the
video.
28. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
29. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
31. MISE-EN-SCENE
My bedroom in the video will be made up of items such
as my bed.
The sun will be rising outside my window.
The filter will be entirely black and white.
I will climb out of bed and put my white shirt on.
The room will be dark and gloomy, with the only light in
the room coming through the window, giving the black
and white filter more of an emotional vibe.
32. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
33. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
34. Don’t
Don’t go changing
You mean everything to me
And hope,
You shine the light,
That covers me.
These are the first lyrics of the
song. The song will start
playing as soon as I reveal the
card that says ‘And I’m
autistic.’ It will then cut to a
shot of me walking down a
corridor and opening my
locker and then one of me
walking into class.
35. My love for you grows stronger when we are
apart x2
So set me apart
We can build our own family
One day we will
But for now wait
And I’ll share your time, for a time,
As you travel the seas,
As you travel,
With the first two lyrics I will be
shown in class doing my work,
then wen ‘We can build our own
family’ plays I will be sitting with
my friends at a table. Then I will
show old footage of me from my
last school with other people.
36.
37. Its hard.
To let you go chasing your
dreams
But I know
You will return back to me
So I’ll wait here
with the love
That sets me apart
*tone changes*
When the tone changes I
will include lots of old
photos/videos of younger
me to show how much I’ve
grown over the years and
how I’ve lived with autism
in my younger years whilst
showing things that I have
done and the places I have
been.
38. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
39. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
40. -Silhouette shot of me in bedroom.
-Over the shot angle of me opening locker and walking
down a corridor.
-Low angle shot of me working in class.
-Shots of me, Kai and Dan sitting at a table.
-Shots of me in my bedroom holding up the signs.
-Establishing shot of me walking through a forest.
-Establishing shot of me walking towards the pond.
-Shot of sun setting over the village.

43. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
44. LOCATIONS
Locations I used for filming:
• York College(For scenes in college I would give someone
my phone whilst I went and performed the scene with or
without other actors and the person I gave the phone to
would film the scene.)
•My house(I placed my camera in one end of my bedroom
whilst I acted on the other side. The bed was usually
between me and the camera. My camera and my lamp
were the only pieces of equipment that I needed.)
•Flaxton (I went to a pond in my village to film the ending
part of the video. I had the camera at multiple different
angles for the same scene, such as over the shoulder, an
establishing shot of the pond itself so the viewer is
familiar with the location and placing the camera across
the pond and filming myself on the dock.)
45. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
47. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
49. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
50. SCHEDULE
Week1+2-Pre-production
Week 3-I will film the bedroom footage of me holding up
the signs to the camera. Estimated time is about 12
minutes.
Week 4-I will film the college footage of me opening and
closing my locker, sitting in class, and with my friends.
Estimated time is about 10 minutes.
Week 5-I will film myself walking by the pond. Estimated
time is about 30 minutes.
51. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here

55. PRODUCTION
RECORD/LOG
To create this shot I
turned down the
opacity to 70, this got
rid of all the grain that
was originally in the
clip.
To make this certain shot I
turned the opacity down
again so the trees would
stand out more and give them
more of a silhouette and
allow the sun to shine
through more.
