2. Quentin Jerome Tarantino is an American director, writer,
producer, actor and film critic. He was born in Knoxville,
Tennessee, on March 27th 1963. His father was aspiring actor
Tony Tarantino, but he left the family before his son was born.
In 1966 Tarantino's mother, Connie McHugh, moved them
both to Los Angeles where she married musician Curtis
Zastoupil. Shortly after they then moved again to Torrance, a
town in South Los Angeles’ south bay area.
3. Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction is known by many as Tarantino’s best film. With an all-star cast of Samuel L.
Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken and
Quentin Tarantino himself.
Tarantino wrote the film in 1992 and 1993 and was it released the year after in 1994. The film
was nominated for several academy awards including best Picture at the 67th Academy
Awards.
The film is a crime-drama set in Los Angeles and follows a non-linear storyline, but follows
three separate stories, each following a different protagonist. However there are points in
the movie where a character from another story will cross-over with another, although
briefly.
Pulp Fiction
4. Pulp Fiction
Each one of the stories seems to have its own sort of theme;
Fate: After shooting Brett in the apartment one of his associates bursts out of the toilets and shoots at
Jules and Vincent, however all the bullets miss them and the shoot him. Jules then claims the event as a
miracle and refuses to leave until Vincent admits it. This dives deeper into his beliefs in religion, which he
probably uses as a moral for doing the things he does.
Morality: After Butch double-crosses Marsellus Wallace he attempts to leave town when Marcellus wants
him dead but when they are both kidnapped and tied in the basement Butch saves Marsellus from the
police officer, as it was morally the right thing to do. Marsellus then decides to allow Butch to leave Los
Angeles, again repeating the theme of doing what is morally the right thing to do.

5. Pulp Fiction - Mise En Scene
Lighting
• Comes from above
like a spotlight,
drawing attention
to the characters.
Type of shot
• The shot used in
the scene is a
long shot. Both
subjects are fully
in frame for a
long period of
time.
Costume
• Very strict in terms of colours.
Sticks to a black and white
colour
Sound
• The only music playing in
this scene is the song that
plays in the background.
From this we get an
accurate idea of what the
environment they’re in
sounds like.
6. The age range of my target audience will be teenagers aged around 16-19 years old. To
appeal to this audience I will include a young presenter and talk with dialogue that feels
similar to how young people of this age range talk.
The targeted gender will be mostly male. To appeal to this part of my audience I will include
a male main character.
The geodemographic of my audience will be UK based so if I include any other characters
or people they will have to be speaking English in order to appeal to this audience.
Target Audience

its younger audience.
I will mention the film is a documentary in any promotional material I
have for it to appeal to the part of audience that like documentaries.
13. Existing products-The Social Network
David Fincher’s The Social Network(2010) tells the
origin story of how the world famous social
platform, Facebook, came to be. The film depicts
social media as what it was meant to be; an online
platform that people can use to connect to and
interact with each other and make new friends
around the world.
I have chosen to look into The Social Network
because
14. The Social Network – Mise En Scene
Lighting
• The essential source of
lighting comes from the
glowing neon table seated
in between Eisenburg and
Timberlake.
• Additional lighting is
coming from the disco
lights in the background.
Sound
• The audio of the dialogue
and club music are set at a
similar level, this is so we
can hear what the
characters are saying
whilst getting an accurate
idea of what the
environment the
characters are in sounds
like.
Camera angle
• The type is a two-over the
shoulder medium close up,
its also a high angle which
means the camera is above
the eye level of the
character, making the
audience look down on
the character.
15. Ethics
Honesty;
• Being truthful to the viewer
• In my documentary I am going to extreme lengths to ensure the facts in my video are authentic and are
not false in any way. I will do fact checking prior to writing the script.
Confidentiality;
• Protecting individual identities from public release
• I don’t necessarily need to include any confidentiality since I am the only person involved with my project
16. Opportunities within film
When searching for techniques I can refer to The Social Network except of
course discussing the topic of social media but in a way I take more
inspiration from the analysis of Pulp Fiction, in terms of its camera angle. My
film will mostly have only one camera angle. In pulp fiction during dialogue
scene there will occasionally be a jump cut of a camera. With my editing
structure I have created a sense of narrative through my the video.
In this video she is talking directly to
the camera in a medium close up. I
will use this technique in my video.
17. Interpretation and Evaluation
• From looking at Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” I have developed an idea of
what kind of edits I can use in my video.
• From looking at Fincher’s “The Social Network” I have learned what kind of
sound mixing and lighting I can use for my video.
