4. RESEARCH
Angela – The Lumineers
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
• Heartfelt
• Emotional
• Warm
• Story telling
• Melancholy moving to upbeat
Uses film reel style filter to give the “Vintage”.
Non jarring transitions give the affect of a
smooth story telling visual experience, The
visuals of the motel and old tavern give a
sense of old Americana. The editing uses jump
cuts between the acting and band performance
in a way that still progresses their overall story
Lighting is used in a way to shift the mood
during the mv to show Angela’s journey, both
geographically and emotionally, moving from
toned down colours and lighting when she’s
stuck in her town. Similar shots are used to
portray different emotions and themes, in the
beginning wide shots are used to show angela
as distant and shut off, whereas they are later
used to show her enjoying life and being free.

slowly over time. When the frames are shown at normal speed the action seems
much faster.
Jump Cuts
ď‚ an abrupt transition from one scene to another.
Match Cut
ď‚ a cut from one shot to another where the composition of the two shots are
matched by the action or subject
Long exposure shots
ď‚ using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements

14. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Keeping A Secret / Bleachers
Written by Bleachers for the 2018 film, Love, Simon, Jack
Anotoff has said the song is so much more than a
specific story of this kid, it’s the story of first love, but
also the story of not being able to share yourself fully
with the world and how painful that can be

15. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Anotoff said in an interview about the song
I’ve never written from anyone else’s perspective, and I
don’t think I ever will, but what interested me about the
movie is, I’m not in high school, closeted, or being
extorted by some other kid, but the idea of “Keeping A
Secret” – you live with that your whole life. Essentially, the
movie, to me, is so much more than a specific story of
this kid, it’s the story of first love, but also the story of
not being able to share yourself fully with the world and
how painful that can be. In Simon’s case, it’s because he’s
closeted, but everyone has that version. So I wrote
“Keeping A Secret” about my life, but it worked for the
movie because I related to the movie. I did that with a lot
of the music for the film… And this movie, the reason
why I wanted to work on the soundtrack was because the
first time I was asked to do something where I saw it, and
I thought, “Oh, this makes me want to share more about
myself.”
16. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
My final idea is to shoot the mv as a story about a coming
of age/self discovery story about a man who denies who
he is until he finds someone who changes his life, the
shots will be bright and vibrant with an old film reel burn
affect, places shot will be in houses and on trains, theme
will start as sad and bleak but then pick up and shift to
happy and upbeat, it will then show the mix of emotions
using the song and specific shots.
18. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
19. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
My intended outcome of this production is to create a
short music video showcasing a modern day story of
romance about how one person can change your outlook
on life
My interpretation of “Keeping a Secret” is the same as
intended by the artist, written from someone else’s
perspective yet deeply resonating with me and
experiences I’ve had in my own life. The song is about
Simon Spier, a 17 year old boy living in America, keeping
a secret.
To be able to complete this I will be filming on an IPhone
11and using a mixture of DaVinci Resolve, Adobe
Premiere Pro, and Adobe After Affects to edit
20. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
Locations: Selby Train Station, Kenilworth Train Station,
Kenilworth, var. locations across England.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
Cost roughly ÂŁ60 in travel, risks inc. catching covid-19
on public transport
21. EQUIPMENT
I will be using an IPhone 11 to film as I have unlimited
access to it and it gives 4K resolution videos, I will also
be using my own personal laptop to edit while on the go.
One reason I’m using my own equipment is to place sole
responsibility for the equipment on myself as I will be
moving across the country while filming and editing. This
will reduce my liability and leave college equipment
available for other people to use
22. FACILITIES
I will primarily be editing in college however due to the
certain climate I am also available to edit anywhere as I
will be storing copies of everything on my laptop.
Programs I will be using for editing include: DeVinci
resolve, Adobe premiere and adobe after affects ( and
potentially lightroom in order to create custom overlays
and create ideal filters.)
23. PERSONNEL
CREW: Myself (filming and directing)
CAST: Myself (lead) and Nathan Zuill (lead)
Pros of using myself: its literally my project
Pros of using Nathan: dependable, good camera
presence
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
26. Shots of lonely college kid by

Used hand rails to safely board
Breaking filming equipment Making sure I have good grip
