The document provides guidance for a music video assignment, including sections on idea generation, pre-production planning, visual planning, organizational planning, and production record keeping. It outlines tasks such as selecting a song, researching music video techniques, developing a concept, creating a shot list, conducting location scouting and risk assessment, developing a production schedule, and obtaining necessary permissions. The document is intended as a template to guide students through the pre-production process for their music video assignments.
2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc.
and how this might link to your production.
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant

9. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
I actually want to subvert the pop genre conventions in my
music video by having a more meaningful video. The
conventions of pop often include long shots of
partying/dancing. They also include high-key lighting, bright
colours (makeup, clothes etc.).
I think my video will be set at night, with the main person being
alone. This completely juxtaposes the partying conventions in
pop music.
Despite opposing the genre, the style of music video fits in with
her image and I think it’ll work well.
11. SUMMARY
The cost of travel to my chosen location is quite high and
therefor it may come as a restriction for my project.
As well as this, I want to film my project at night which
creates a time restriction.
12. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
I’m going to do the song Liability by Lorde.
Born on November 7, 1996, Lorde (Ella Marija Lani Yelich-
O'Connor) is a singer/songwriter born in the Auckland
suburb of Takapuna and raised in neighboring Devonport,
New Zealand. She is of Irish and Croatian descent. She
became an international crossover hit in 2013 with her
debut studio album, Pure Heroine.
This song was written after an ex-lover told her that she
was too much for anyone, the lyrics are about realising she
is good enough for herself.
13. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
Lordes liability song is about loving yourself even when think
no one else loves you. One of the first lyrics is ‘said he made
the big mistake of dancing in my storm’. Which is a powerful
metaphor for anyone that is involved in her life, a storm creates
destruction. But there is always a storm eye- with in herself.
The next line is ‘so I go home, into the arms of the girl that I
love’. Which at first makes the audience think she’s talking
about a loved one. But the next line is ‘but all that a stranger
would see, is one girl, swaying alone, stroking her cheek’ which
reveals that she was talking about herself.
The chorus then goes to talk about the things the her exes
would say to her ‘you’re a little much for me’, ‘you’re a liability’
but Lorde also confirmed that she believed it was true, saying
that 'I'm never too much for myself and sometimes self love is
14. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
I’m going to create a narrative video which will aid the
visuals in telling the story.
16. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
17. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
My intended product will be a music video to the song
Liability by Lorde.
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your interpretation of it [remember the questions in the workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements
18. LOCATIONS
Most of the settings will be in Harrogate near Bettys Tea
Rooms on the streets. We will be filming at around ten in
order to get a darker low-key setting but still need to be
weary of cars and vehicles on the road.
The other setting is going to be at my house which is
probably not as important in terms of risk assessment but
I still need to make myself aware of possible risks.
19. EQUIPMENT
We need to talk too the staff 2 college days in advance.
I’m going to borrow a tripod from my sister to save time,
I’m also going to use her fisheye lens. For some of the
shots, I’m going to use my phone as there are automatic
slow-motion settings on it. This will save time when I’m
editing. As well as this, I am thinking of purchasing a
Krylon tear stick. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kryolan-

20. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other specialist
facilities…?
Most of my editing will be done in college but it is important that
I download some software to my computer at home to ensure
that I’m not always relying on it. A few examples of editing
software are:
► Pinnacle Studio 22 - https://fave.co/2PHTmOA
► Wondershare Filmora - https://fave.co/2vFcJi9
► Cyberlink PowerDirector 17 - https://fave.co/2XW9bUv
► Vegas Pro 16 - https://fave.co/2vDNBsa
► Adobe Premiere - https://fave.co/2P1wmsZ
21. PERSONNEL
CREW: the crew members will just be me and my sister.
She will be acting as my assistant whilst I film and direct.
She is only available on the weekends so I will need to
work my schedule around her and the actor. I will have to
cover food costs for my sister.
CAST: My friend will be acting in this film, she is
available on Wednesdays and the weekends. It’s going to
filmed in both my house and Harrogate so when she
travels to mine, I will have to cover the costs of travel. As
well as this, I will have to cover lunch costs.
22. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
I will not need a large range of props and costumes as
my music video only contains one character. But I have
decided that there will be one outfit change in it.
24. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING & SHOT LIST
Opening shot in a taxi, model crying. (Smeared makeup, low-key
lighting, close-up)
Leave Taxi, walk toward the house. (Stumbling slightly, mid shot from
behind)
Enters house and puts arms out toward the left side of the camera
(mirroring going to hug someone)
Arms wrapped around curtains stroking own cheek (Smiling)
Dancing around house, closed body language, arms around
themselves.
holding a toy close to their heart
Running through street at night with no shoes on, jumping etc.
(Mid/long shots)
Grabbing onto lamppost and slowly sliding down to the floor (sadness,
mid-shot)
Shot changes to model back in their room (transition shot into eyes
then zooming out to a close up on the lyric ‘better on my own’)
26. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
27. SECTION 1
The first verse is quiet with a steady pace, In
this verse I want a shot of an actor crying in
a taxi to aid the visuals.
"Baby really hurt me
Crying in the taxi
He don't wanna know me
Says he made the big
mistake of dancing in my
storm
Says it was poison". - 0:15
28. SECYION 2
"So I guess I'll go
home
Into the arms of the
girl that I love
The only love I haven't
screwed up
She's so hard to please
But she's a forest fire".
Although the pace of the music doesn't change for this
section, there is more information lyrically and therefor it
feels slightly more intense. Because of this I want my actor up
on their feet and dancing.

33. LOCATION INFORMATION
The first place I will be filming is Harrogate town centre.
This place is practical as it’s often quiet at night which
fits perfectly with the atmosphere I want to create. I will
be using the lighting at night in Harrogate to my
advantage. I don’t need permission for filming here as it
is public access. An issue that I might come upon is
being unable to pay travel expenses. If I can’t, I will film
in my backup location.
34. Backup Location
My backup location will be Leeds City Centre. It’s less
practical as it tends to be busier at night in compared to
Harrogate. Despite this, the atmosphere I want to create
in my video is the same. To reduce the business, I'm
going to film on a sunday at night as there tends to be
less people in Leeds.
35. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a starting point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
37. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Possible Issue: Actions to be undertaken
Bad weather during filming Reschedule filming to a date that will be better, try
move filming indoors.
Locations unavailable Look at new potential locations, use backup location
Actors become ill or unavailable Look at the possibilities of an understudy, if filming
has started be prepared to re-film
Props become unavailable Look at using back props. This can include
substituting the prop gun for example using a prop
knife instead.
39. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
I'm filming in either Harrogate town centre or Leeds city
centre and therefore I don't need any
clearance/permissions for those places as they are for
public access.
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
