The document contains three music video ideas from Mary Lawson. The first idea is about domestic abuse and depicts a young girl dancing in the forest to express her pain and flashbacks of fights with her abusive boyfriend. The second idea shows a teen party that starts with one person in an empty park and grows into a large gathering, depicting stereotypes of teen life. The third idea uses a vlog style to show the pressures a young girl faces to fit in at parties, including how she dresses and acts. Mary Lawson also provides reasoning for choosing to create music videos rather than advertisements or film trailers.
2. Music video idea 1
◦ My first idea involves the concept of domestic abuse within a relationship. The video would begin with a
young girl lying down in a forest covered in dirt, the music starts when she opens her eyes, slowly she begins
to move different parts of the body until she eventually gets up. As the music increases in tempo The young
girl breaks out into a dance routine, close ups of her face to show her pain and sadness. Throughout this
dance number we see flashbacks in which her and her boyfriend are having a fight, which ends in her being
hurt in someway. As the music goes on the girl gets more angry and her dance moves become more
powerful. The music video ends with her coming out of the forest symbolising her getting out of her abusive
relationship.

Setting: Forest/woods, dark and gloomy, quite muddy and overgrown.
Character: young teen, dressed in a simple white dress, no shoes, no makeup, hair is messy.

3. Music video Idea 2
◦ My second idea is based around teen life and the stereotypes that are based on them. My idea begins with
one person sitting in an empty park in the paddling pool, smoking, the music begins and gradually people
begin to join this one person, as they join they bring something that would be found at a party for example
tables, chairs, snacks and a speaker. Eventually it turns into a massive party outside and there are close ups of
people smoking people drinking people dancing and laughing and having fun, as the music comes to an end
the party dies down and people take away what they brought until there is only the original one person left.
It is now daylight and there is just one person lying in the paddling pool they then get woken up by a dog
owner walking the dog as the person gets up they look rather confused and walk off as if nothing happened.

◦ Setting: empty park with an empty paddling pool in it, not surrounded by any houses or buildings etc
◦ Character: Young teen boy as main, lots of teens and an older man as dog walker.
◦ Mise en scene: park benches, playground
◦ Props: tables, chairs, food, drinks, cigarettes, speakers
4. Music video Idea 3
◦ My final idea uses the vlog style of filming in which the footage is being filmed from the perspective of
the main character. The main character would be a young girl who films her getting ready to go out to
party and then the events that occur throughout the party and people that she meets. This will be shot
over many days and therefore many different parties and different people that she meets, there are
some people that look after her and make sure she is okay and then there are others that force her to do
stuff and are not looking out for her. The idea of the video is to highlight the pressures and situations
that teenagers are put into in order to fit in, this is from the clothes that she wears and the amount of
make up that she feels she needs to put on to the situation that she is put in for example being forced to
smoke or drink. The video ends with her passing out at a party.

5. Why am I choosing to do a music video?
I've decided to do a music video instead of an advert or a new product because I like the idea of being
able to portray a story and make the audience feel a certain way about a certain subject area. I feel I
feel like there is also more chance to use as a righty of different camera techniques and editing skills
that you may not be able to use if you were to do an advert for example in which they may need to she
is montages. I also think that the music videos and more interesting task to complete and that you can
get involved with the music and have a deep passion for the product that you are making.
6. Advert idea 1
Colgate advert, opens up with a close up off a young women's closed
mouth, the camera pans out to see she is at a dinner table with lots of
friends and family, she seems to not be opening her mouth and with
some comedic effect she tries to eat, drink and talk with her mouth
closed. The screen then cuts to her at home brushing her teeth with
Colgate as the voice over says " don't hide away" then a cut to her at
the same table with the same guests this time smiling and laughing.
7. Advert idea 2
Hairspray advert: opens with a wide shot of a group of girls getting
ready in a bedroom, someone doing the make up some are doing their
hair some are dancing around the room but you can always see a can of
hairspray and the close ups of the brand. The girls all finished getting
ready only to go downstairs into the living room sit down and watch
telly. The screen then goes black and the voice-overs says the "perfect
updo for any occasion" while the bottle of hairspray sits on the black
screen.
8. Advert idea 3
Advert for tesco meal deal: busy London Town, a business man is
running through the crowds in a full suit and brief case. He spots a
tesco store and checks his watch he nods to himself puts down his
brief case and rips off his suit to reveal a superman costume, he
sprints to tesco and usain bolt style picks up a meal deal and runs
back to his office just in time. He's in a board meting and is being
stared at for his attire. A close up of the meal deal and a slogan
that reads "the lunch time hero".
9. Why I went against making an
advert.
◦ Adverts main purpose is to persuade the audience to buy a product therefore it is less about the
narrative and more about the specific product. As I stated earlier I am more into making the
audience feel a certain way by using characters and plots rather than forcing a product upon
them. I feel the adverts don't get enough time to do this as they tend to use techniques such as
montages and quick shots rather than getting to know the characters and getting to feel a
certain way about what is been shown to you like you do in a music video.
10. Trailer idea 1 (horror)
◦ The trailer begins on a close up of a young girl screaming , the screen then goes black and the
soundtrack begins of eerie music, quick shots of the girl being chased through a forest. The girl
then stops and looks straight into the camera, slightly smirking as the screen goes black and the
title appears.
11. Trailer idea 2 (teen comedy)
◦ The trailer begins in a college it shows lots of students in the hallway when suddenly the music
starts and the crowds depart to reveal popular pretty blonde girl and her two friends. A
monologue begins of that ago explaining her road to popularity which include some
embarrassing details. A montage starts of her life from geek to chic.
12. Trailer idea 3 (drama)
◦ The trailer starts off with a heartbeat sound and then faintscreaming in the background the first
picture is of a man laying in the snow on the ground covered in blood a young woman runs to
his side crying. There is a flashback of the same man moments before the situation happened
and he looks into the camera says they shouldn't of happened and the screen goes black and
the title appears.
13. Why I went against making a film
trailer.
◦ When making a trailer you only giving a section of the narrative and so is not a full story and
therefore they can't connect with that and you're giving them a broken narrative. You will also
have to take the whole idea and condense it down to the key points and lose half of your ideas
whereas in a music video that three or so minutes is your story and you can use that to portray
whatever you wish.
