Back to the future part and Ferris Buller analysis
1. Back to the future part
I’m going to analyse the first 2 minutes of back to the future
The movie starts with a long panning shot across a number of different clocks all saying the
same, there are some newspaper clippings which are framed on the wall, and this is to show
that they could be meaningful later on in the movie. I think the clocks are there to show that
the movie is all about time and to make it clear to the audience from the very start. This is
all there to show the audience that the movie is all to do with time. There is a bed which I
covered in clothes this has been done to show that the man who lives here is probably very
messy and does not do a lot of sleeping. Also the fact that his alarm has started shows he
did not sleep last night. This is to show the audience that this person has an active life and
he does not always sleep when he should. From the first 1 minute and 30 seconds the
audience can already tell what the movie is about and what is going to happen in it vaguely.
This is done by the director so people are engaged from the start and want to watch it.
Film then gets more interesting with a number of contraption all clock related going off. For
example the teas maid with no jug, so the hot water is pouring all over the floor. This shows
the audience again that the man who lives here is intelligent and he can engineer things. But
also at the same time shows the audience that he is also very unorganised, with the hot
water going everywhere. From these 10 seconds of clip we can already see what kind of
main character there is going to be in this film. Probably an unorganised professor or
scientist
The director dose this to keep people interested but also to give us a character profile
without showing us the character. This show how most important it is to get the film
opening right and to keep an audience engaged but at the same time keeping it enjoyable to
watch and interesting. But also with really meaning that relates to the film later on.
2. Ferris Bueller
Analyse of first 2 minutes of Ferris Bueller.
The movie starts with some underline talking from a radio ad America towns are mentioned
lead us to believe it is set in America, then a wide angle shot setting the scene showing
typical America style house of a richer person. The director has done this to show the
audience the setting of the movie and what we are to expect next, which is probably a
family scene. We then at the same time here from a woman and a man exchanging dialog
about the a person called Farris. We are then instantly shown on the word Farris this boy at
neutral shot laying on his bed, this indicates that this is the boy called Farris and he is unwell
because he is pale and lying on his bed. the film then cuts to a point of view shot from the
boy called Farris looking up to what I think are his parent at a high angles, they are talking
into the camera. The director has done this to show that the film is going to be about the
boy, he has done this by making him appear first in the film and then using a shot from his
point of view, shows his importants in the movie. His name is also the first name we hear in
the move. This is only first 50 seconds of the movie and we can already tell who the main
character in the movie. This shows how important it is to get the movie opening correct
because it can set the way for the whole movie and the audience can get there ideas set in
head about were the movie is going.
In the next bit of the two minute clip there are lots of shot reverse shot from a low to high
angles with Farris talking to his parents. He is saying how he should be going to school
because he’s got a test but his parents say he is not well enough to go to school. The
director has used these shot angles because it shows how weak he is even thought he isn’t
as we the audience are looking down on him. But also we can tell that something is not right
because stereotypes of society suggest that a teenage boy does not look forward to a test.
This leads the audience to believe that he is not telling the truth. This probably set the
theme for the whole movie that he does not tell the truth and he is always lying.
We then see a girl in the next section of clip we see 3 shots before her first line to set out
opinion and who she is. The first shot is of her feet in high heels taping her right foot. The
next part is of her belly and her hands on her hips in disapproving way. Then the third shot
to set her character we see her face she has multiple piecing’s and her hair is in a modern
3. style for time. This all point towards this character being Farris sister, without the director
even letting her mentions a word. The reason behind this are we already been shown that
this is a typical American family and our ideals are of a mother, father, brother and sister.
This just proves how important it is to get the opening of a movie right because from these
couple of seconds out of a two minute clip we can already tell a lot about the movie and
along the lines it will probably travel
I have never watched this movie before but I predict, that Farris is trying to get a day off
school because he does not want to go to school and the rest of movie will follow along the
lines with what he does with his day off and freedom.
