2.  For my first frame I have chosen the title of our film. The title is named ‘Attractions Kills’ as the
storyline of our film opening is that Scott who plays the villain is attracted as well as obsessed with
blonde girls, makes them his girlfriends whom then he kills at the end of it. On top of this he is also a
drug taker. This is a huge part of our opening, meaning the title connects with the story of our
opening perfectly. This is because ‘Attraction’ is the first word in our title and attraction is the main
reason to why he kills these young girls, you could also say this is why he takes the drugs he does
because he is yet again ‘attracted’ to them.
 We as a group decided to put our title on a blank black screen to make the title more noticeable and
clear. We didn’t want any distractions so this is another reason why we kept the background clear.
The reason why we kept it black/dark is because the main location is the isolated room which is also
dark. This also goes along with the conventions of a thriller genre.
 The title of any film is important as a lot of thought goes into it. After watching many film openings
and looking at their title and title sequences we finally decided on the font, size and position. Many
film openings like Arlington Road inspired us as our title doesn’t come up straight away as the opening
begins. It appears after roughly a few seconds of the opening has already been shown. We done this
because the shots of our film that are shown before the title show the attraction in which Scott as the
villain has, helping the audience realise why we have named our film this.

3.  We as a group decided to stay with the typical convention of a thriller setting and location. There are
many depending on the sub genre the film is. Our sub genres were obsession and psychological. In
this case the typical setting of a film of this sub genre would be a dark, isolated area meaning inside
and out. We followed this as we have two different settings, one is the room in which is dark and
isolated and the second is the alley way which is also isolated.
 As you can see from this first screen shot of our first location/setting, is very typical of a thriller genre.
It is a small, dark and unknown room which is full of pictures of the girls Scott has killed in the past
with red ‘X’s through their faces. This is indicating danger, blood and death. This gives a sense of
suspense, has a lot of enigma codes and is quite intimidating for the audience.
 As you can also see from the second screen shot our second location/setting was down a cut off alley
way. The location of an alley is a typical convention of a thriller as alley ways are stereotypically
dangerous and things tend to be bad that occur down them. The lighting is light but this makes it
unusual and indicates the drug use that Scott is doing as he is strangling Jamie in broad daylight,
showing he isn’t in the right frame of mind.

4.  Again for our costumes and props we stuck to the typical thriller conventions. The protagonist
who is played by Scott is dressed in all dark/black clothes. We again looked through several
thriller film openings e.g. Copy Cat, Arlington Road etc and all of the protagonists were
dressed in dark clothes but still all looked very casual, as if they wasn’t dressed casual then it
would be extremely obvious that something was going on. The way both of the characters
dressed were just like teenagers who attend sixth form which means that it is more appealing
to a teenage audience as many can relate.
 We was limited with our props, we used two knives, rope to tie Jamie up with, fake blood and
talcum powder used for the drugs. Although we was limited we used them to the best of our
ability and they worked/fitted into our opening.

5.  We ensured that every shot that we took suited he scene in which it was in. For example right
at the beginning we use a slow motion pan which slows all of the pictures pinned up on the
wall. This is effective because it allows the audience to get a good look at all of the pictures in
which are up. This allows the audience to also think to themselves why they are the main
camera focus. This adds more enigma codes.
 We also use shot reverse shot during the conversation between Jamie and Scott in the second
half of our opening. This is effective because it makes it clear who is talking at what time. It
also allows the audience to concentrate on what each person is saying at a time as the dialogue
is important.
 There is a close up of Jamie and Scott holding hands indicating to the audience that they are
boyfriend and girlfriend. The close up is implying that it is really important to the film.

6.  First of all we done our credits and they were red and quite large.
When we done them like this it looked very unprofessional. We
had all the right wording but looking back on it we didn’t think
the appearance fitted in with the atmosphere of the film. After this
we watched several thriller openings to get inspiration. So due to
this we changed our credits to being small and all in a white basic
font. This again fitted in with our title as we kept the font all the
same throughout the whole opening. We used a fade in and fade
out transition for our credits too which made them more
appealing for the audience to watch.

7.  We first wanted Scott as the protagonist to be introduced to create enigma
codes. We as a group wanted the audience to get thinking on why he was
introduced first out of all of the characters. This is because Scott is the
main character. We thought up of this on our own as we watched many
openings of thrillers but most either introduced the protagonist late into
the opening or not at all.
 We also have a soundtrack in the background which is non diegetic
sound. This is of a news report mentioning the amount of girls going
missing recently adding to the set up of our story because as the news
report is playing the photos of the girls who have previously been killed
are being shown.
 The phone which is shown in the first half gives away the fact that Jamie
is Scott’s girlfriend as she is saved under girlfriend. This indicates what
will happen further on in the opening.

8.  My groups film opening shows conventions of the thriller genre.
For example the news report which is non diegetic creates tension
and suspension because it makes the audience think to themselves
‘why is it playing?’ and ‘what is the purpose of it being there?’.
 The thriller genre is usually associated with darkness, suspense
etc and our film opening shows all of these through either
location/setting, characters and costumes/props.

9.  The first character introduced is our protagonist (who is played by Scott). We decided on making Scott the first
character who is introduced because after watching the several thriller openings we realised that this was the
unusual thing to do. Due to us following practically every other convention of thriller to change/curve away
from the stereotype/typical thriller genre we done this. The only thing you see of Scott though is his back. This
keeps the convention of suspense and tension
 Secondly Jamie is firstly introduced by a picture off of Scott’s phone and is only know as ‘Girlfriend’ as she is
named on his phone. The first time she is introduced in person is just after the fade in and out. She is seen as a
stereotypical teenage girl who attends sixth form, this is connoted through the way she dresses (smartly). You
do not know much about her, you don’t know her name, the audience jus knows her as ‘Girlfriend’ which
again creates confusion, curiosity an suspicion.
 Justin is another character who the audience briefly see, yet who is so important to the story. Again this is
creating suspense because the audience are clueless to who he is and why he is there and lastly what he will d
now once he has witnessed Jamie being strangled.

10.  The only special effects we have in our opening
is the slow motion when Jamie is fainting
because Scott is strangling her. This slow
motion makes the shot look more effective
because it emphasises the characters mind and
puts the audience into the characters shoes.
