2. Location
The only location that is used in this short film is a
bedroom. The reason for this is because the film is
about a man that wakes up and get ready for his date and
then goes back to sleep to go on his “dream date”. In
terms of props he used everyday things that we would to
get ready with e.g. tooth brush, shower he used things
that were at home. The location is very relevant to the
film and what it is about. We can tell that it is a bedroom
because there is a bed in it and then we can see objects
that are personal to the man around the room that people
would keep in there bedroom. We can tell that it isn't a
hotel because hotels look more impersonal and look
different they still have a bed but there are not a lot of
objects around that would be personal to a person
3. Props/makeup
The makeup that is used is natural
everyday make the reason for this is
because it is based in a bedroom and
it would not make sense if the man
had overdone makeup so they kept it
simplistic to keep it realistic. The
main prop that is used is a bed we
see the bed at the start and at the end
of the film it really helped us
understand the story that was going
on and the bed was a key part of it
or we would not have understood
that he was going on a “dream
date”. The phone was a very good
prop to use in this film because it
made the audience think about why
the man set the alarm and where he
is going.
4. Lighting
Natural lighting was used throughout this film
especially because they shot most of their
scenes in a bedroom because that was the
main location. The reason why I think that
they choose to use natural lighting instead of
other lighting is because this showed us that
the man was getting ready for his “date”
during the day. The only time they use
artificial lighting is in the bathroom. The
lighting that they used is the same lighting
that we would see in a normal bathroom
which made it realistic to the audience.
Another reason why I think that they used
artificial lighting because it would have been
too dark in the bathroom if they used natural
lighting. I can see that if they used
professional lighting and really lit the room it
would take away the effect of it being to a real
bedroom.
5. Costume
The costume that they used where every
day casual clothing because that is what an
average person would wear in there bed
room. We saw the character wake up with
pyjamas and then wear a robe to get ready
which made the audience relate because
that is what some people wear in their daily
lives I thought that it was a good choice for
the man to wear a suit because it showed
how the man was very excited for the date
and wanted to look nice to made the
audience connect to this that people want to
look nice when they want to go on a date.
This has made me think about the impact
costume has on the audience and how it can
make a difference to the audience about
what the character is wearing in each
situation they are in.
6. Camera
I thought that it was interesting that they
used a pull focus at the beginning. This
made the audience think about the
background behind the title and captured
the attention of the viewer straight away.
They done a slow pan up from the phone
to the man that was holding it this made
the audience think about who is holding
the phone. A lot of match on action is
used in this film for example when the
man puts on the shower then steps into it.
Also when he is walking into the
bathroom and then we see him go to the
shower. It makes us feel like we are
getting ready with him and following
everything that he does. The camera
angles that are mostly used in the film are
mid-shots and close ups this is again to
create the effect of use following the man
getting ready for his date but it is also
used so that we could see his excited and
happy facial expressions which made us
focus on the emotion of the character
more. This also made use look at his
movements and how he was trying to
reedy himself for example him shaving
and spraying his hair with hair spray
7. Editing
I can see that the editor really thought about the narrative that they
wanted to create and the message that they wanted to put through to
the audience. It had a really good flow that I could follow and I
understood that the man was getting ready to go on a date with
someone. I also understood the excitement he had for the date
including shots of him looking in the mirror and smiling in approval
about how he looks in the mirror. However I would not have
included the shot of just his feet when he got out of bed because it
doesn’t add anything to the film and it also slows down the pace of
the film. The pace of the film is quite slow which makes us feel like
that the man is slowly getting ready maybe this was the effect they
were going for when they were editing this film. I like that they
ended with the man getting back into bed after he had been getting
ready it makes it more comical.
8. Sound
At the start of the film diegetic sound is used first off starting with ambient sound of the outside and
we can hear birds the reason why they have used this sort of sound is because it gives the audience
the sense that it is morning which makes it more realistic when the man wakes up. Through our the
film diegetic sound it used for the things that he doing for example the sound for the shower and
down to the detail of him walking across the floor and hearing his footsteps. The reason why they
have included these detailed sounds is because it makes us feel like we are in the room with him
and are actually watching what he is doing. The only piece of dialogue that is included is “hey
baby” when the man gets into bed with his suit and goes to sleep. I thought that this was the only
dialogue that was needed because then the audience automatically knew to take the title in the
literal sense it was an actual dream date which made the film even more hilarious
9. What have I taken from this film how will it helped me with my film?
The things that I have taken from this film that I will use in my own film is
how strong the narrative is to follow and how they have caught your
attention from the start and make you question what is going on from the
start which means that they have your attention throughout it. I want to have
that impact on my audience from early on. Since this is a silent film except
from the only bit of dialogue at the end I have taken that the sound that I use
needs to be strong and needs to go with what is happening on screen. I also
learned that a simplistic storyline can be very entertaining and comical I just
need to think about the way that I shoot it. In terms of editing it taught me
that I need to be more selective with the shots that I put in my film and I
cannot include everything I shoot because it won’t make sense to the
narrative for example in this film when they include a shot of only his feet
for a bit it slowed down the pace of the film and I didn’t understand why
they included it.
