(Opening scene/Genre and how the opening suggests it)
This is my opening scene. I wanted to start it how it would end (with the character Bruce to be in it).
I wanted to do this because this is a favoured style from my inspiration guy Ritchie, Lexi Alexander
and Noel Clarke (as they do in snatch, green street and adulthood), so I thought that this was
important to add this because it was fundamental to his method of directing. This represent my
genre fairly well because the lighting is ambient and in
‘gritty lad films’ this is the top type of lighting to have,
because it is dark and can represent poverty where
stereotypically violence and trouble with the authority
takes place, and my film is about violence and rebelling
against the police.
I had also put in the pig masks in the background because I
wanted the audience to know that they were in the bank
heist as well (which becomes clear further in the movie).
They are dressed how they are because I wanted it to seem
like a doing a ‘controlled’ heist, however because they
thought It was full proof, because it messes up and it goes
wrong, that’s why they are over reacting, so you can tell
that they are not the stereotypical master minds, but in fact they are just odd job, back alley street
thugs that wanted to make it big.
I had also chose pig masks because in London, another word for the police is ‘the pigs’ so I thought it
would be ironic and cunny so have that, just to back up the fact that they are from London because
that is stereotypical slang for the police.
I made the main actor (Bruce) have the big magnum gun because it was the biggest and most
powerful of guns that we had. This would represent that he is the leader and experienced because
that is a gun that an amateur wouldn’t have or know how to handle, also backing up the fact that he
is the ‘alpha dog’.
(Start of the freeze frame/ how characters are introduced)
I chose to introduce the characters by the freeze frames because
this is a technique used by guy Ritchie in his films. Also by doing
this I could add little bios that would add a new element to the
film opening. I decided
to have a voice over to
give the viewer a
deeper understanding on what the characters do, why they
are in the team and a tiny bit of a back ground. I wanted to
give a bit of background because I wanted to make the
viewer feel involved and really get the characters because I feel that the more you understand about
the characters, the more you will enjoy the film and more you will be engrossed by it because you
can understand why they did what they did.
I didn’t give a cut away scene to Bruce, because I wanted his character to remain anonymous
because the viewer would find out about his past and what his character is like during the rest of the
film as you find out about his dark past and why he is because of his past
(Set location)
I chose to do my film in a caravan because the original plane was
to drive the cars in to the forest however the day before it had
rained heavily, meaning if we did drive the cars, they would get
stuck in the mud making the film not as entertaining. So I then
chose to settle with the caravan because it would give the
impression of a ‘safe house’ for them to meet, vaguely based
around the original idea. Also because it is a caravan, it could
also be seen like a symbol, representing their past, growing up
in poor estates (caravans are stereotypically linked with gypsies)
so even though they are doing a ‘sophisticated’ bank heist they
will never break the bounds of having that link to the gypsies
and once being poor.
All of the cut away scenes are filmed in the modern day environment because I wanted to give the
impression that they will do their ‘dirty work’ anywhere at any time, showing their true commitment
to what they do. I thought that this was important to add because it could possibly represent how
far they have come (from being brought up in a poor environment, to then be able to live in a middle
class setting), and also backing up the saying ‘ you can take the man out the jungle, but you can’t
take the jungle out of the man’, meaning even though he is living in a good environment, they will
still be rough because that’s how they have been brought up, truly showing the extent of the true
nature that they have and purses.
(Conflict)
I wanted to have conflict from the very start. The reason for this is
because generally men love violence and I wanted to draw them in from
the start (because the male
population is my main target
audience), meaning that they will
watch the rest of the film. This will
also give the impression to the viewer that because there is
fighting right from the start, means that there is a possibility that
there is fighting all the way through, drawing them in and tempting them even more to watch the
rest of the film.
(Camera and editing)
For the camera angels is tried to do as many traditional and conventional angles as I could. The
reason for this is because I didn’t have the equipment to do anything fancy (following tracking shots
where it is steady ect) so I thought if I kept it simple the overall finishing of the final edit would come
out better because it would be more stable. I tried to involve the 180’ rule and shot reverse shot
during the actors sharing dialog because those two styles of angles complement each other very
well, and also these are the two shots that I’m good at so I used that to my advantage
During the post-production. I decided not to add a lot of sfx and vfx because the films that I took my
inspiration from didn’t have any vfx so I didn’t want to add any because I wanted to compliment the
genre I was doing, also I tried not to add any music/ sfx because I wanted to try and do all my sound
all on screen. This would make the film have that realistic factor/ feeling to it. The only editing of the
sound I had to do was the sound near the end and the voice overs, other from that it was all on
screen. This is a common technique used by British lad films because they want to make it feel as
real as possible.
(Title font and style)
The font and style of the writing in my film was fairly simple yet effective. I chose to have it in bold
and an army style because they really represent males as a whole. I chose to do a muddy yellow
colour because it looks like the army yellow colour. I also put holes in the title to represent bullet
holes because it is an action, gritty lad film. Also dominantly in gritty lad films, they always have a
black background when writing has appeared because the writing appears because it sticks out more
and there are no other distractions on the screen so you know that this is the thing that your focus
should be on so you maybe won’t forget the name of this film.

Question 1

  • 1. (Opening scene/Genre and how the opening suggests it) This is my opening scene. I wanted to start it how it would end (with the character Bruce to be in it). I wanted to do this because this is a favoured style from my inspiration guy Ritchie, Lexi Alexander and Noel Clarke (as they do in snatch, green street and adulthood), so I thought that this was important to add this because it was fundamental to his method of directing. This represent my genre fairly well because the lighting is ambient and in ‘gritty lad films’ this is the top type of lighting to have, because it is dark and can represent poverty where stereotypically violence and trouble with the authority takes place, and my film is about violence and rebelling against the police. I had also put in the pig masks in the background because I wanted the audience to know that they were in the bank heist as well (which becomes clear further in the movie). They are dressed how they are because I wanted it to seem like a doing a ‘controlled’ heist, however because they thought It was full proof, because it messes up and it goes wrong, that’s why they are over reacting, so you can tell that they are not the stereotypical master minds, but in fact they are just odd job, back alley street thugs that wanted to make it big. I had also chose pig masks because in London, another word for the police is ‘the pigs’ so I thought it would be ironic and cunny so have that, just to back up the fact that they are from London because that is stereotypical slang for the police. I made the main actor (Bruce) have the big magnum gun because it was the biggest and most powerful of guns that we had. This would represent that he is the leader and experienced because that is a gun that an amateur wouldn’t have or know how to handle, also backing up the fact that he is the ‘alpha dog’. (Start of the freeze frame/ how characters are introduced) I chose to introduce the characters by the freeze frames because this is a technique used by guy Ritchie in his films. Also by doing this I could add little bios that would add a new element to the film opening. I decided to have a voice over to give the viewer a deeper understanding on what the characters do, why they are in the team and a tiny bit of a back ground. I wanted to give a bit of background because I wanted to make the
  • 2. viewer feel involved and really get the characters because I feel that the more you understand about the characters, the more you will enjoy the film and more you will be engrossed by it because you can understand why they did what they did. I didn’t give a cut away scene to Bruce, because I wanted his character to remain anonymous because the viewer would find out about his past and what his character is like during the rest of the film as you find out about his dark past and why he is because of his past (Set location) I chose to do my film in a caravan because the original plane was to drive the cars in to the forest however the day before it had rained heavily, meaning if we did drive the cars, they would get stuck in the mud making the film not as entertaining. So I then chose to settle with the caravan because it would give the impression of a ‘safe house’ for them to meet, vaguely based around the original idea. Also because it is a caravan, it could also be seen like a symbol, representing their past, growing up in poor estates (caravans are stereotypically linked with gypsies) so even though they are doing a ‘sophisticated’ bank heist they will never break the bounds of having that link to the gypsies and once being poor. All of the cut away scenes are filmed in the modern day environment because I wanted to give the impression that they will do their ‘dirty work’ anywhere at any time, showing their true commitment to what they do. I thought that this was important to add because it could possibly represent how far they have come (from being brought up in a poor environment, to then be able to live in a middle class setting), and also backing up the saying ‘ you can take the man out the jungle, but you can’t take the jungle out of the man’, meaning even though he is living in a good environment, they will still be rough because that’s how they have been brought up, truly showing the extent of the true nature that they have and purses. (Conflict) I wanted to have conflict from the very start. The reason for this is because generally men love violence and I wanted to draw them in from the start (because the male population is my main target audience), meaning that they will watch the rest of the film. This will also give the impression to the viewer that because there is fighting right from the start, means that there is a possibility that
  • 3. there is fighting all the way through, drawing them in and tempting them even more to watch the rest of the film. (Camera and editing) For the camera angels is tried to do as many traditional and conventional angles as I could. The reason for this is because I didn’t have the equipment to do anything fancy (following tracking shots where it is steady ect) so I thought if I kept it simple the overall finishing of the final edit would come out better because it would be more stable. I tried to involve the 180’ rule and shot reverse shot during the actors sharing dialog because those two styles of angles complement each other very well, and also these are the two shots that I’m good at so I used that to my advantage During the post-production. I decided not to add a lot of sfx and vfx because the films that I took my inspiration from didn’t have any vfx so I didn’t want to add any because I wanted to compliment the genre I was doing, also I tried not to add any music/ sfx because I wanted to try and do all my sound all on screen. This would make the film have that realistic factor/ feeling to it. The only editing of the sound I had to do was the sound near the end and the voice overs, other from that it was all on screen. This is a common technique used by British lad films because they want to make it feel as real as possible.
  • 4. (Title font and style) The font and style of the writing in my film was fairly simple yet effective. I chose to have it in bold and an army style because they really represent males as a whole. I chose to do a muddy yellow colour because it looks like the army yellow colour. I also put holes in the title to represent bullet holes because it is an action, gritty lad film. Also dominantly in gritty lad films, they always have a black background when writing has appeared because the writing appears because it sticks out more and there are no other distractions on the screen so you know that this is the thing that your focus should be on so you maybe won’t forget the name of this film.
