Educational Autobiography A lot of people think education is just something you get in school, but
in reality education comes from different places and people not just school and teachers. For
example, way before I started school I was already being educated by my parents, they taught me
how to eat, behave, use the bathroom, talk, and a lot of other things that help out in life. I started my

Sadly to say, I didn't really have a teacher in middle school that made a big impact in my life but I
matured on my own and got my stuff together and put my work first and girls second. When I
graduated 8th grade I was so excited because I had accomplished something special but I knew that
wasn't the end but in fact a beginning to an even bigger obstacle, high school. I still remember on
the day of graduation my mom went alone because my dad was working and after I told her that this
wasn't the last time she would see me walking down for a diploma because in couple more years I
would be doing it again. That was a big deal because she never graduated high school neither did my
dad because my mom had me and they had to care for me. Then finally I made it to high school.
This was the place where everything I learned up to now would help me. My 9th grade year was
really good I met new friends that I still talk to, got good grades but other than that it was a normal
year. When I went to 10th grade I was in AOF (Academy of Finance) or Global. At first I was a little
optimistic about being in it because I didn't really know a lot of people but I stayed because I was a
little curious about the whole business stuff going on in there. It was a good decision to stay because
I really enjoy all the business related work and I am looking forward to even having some sort of a

Woodland Middle School Observation
Starting my opening school experience I was nervous. I could not eat or sleep the day before. I woke
up bright and early to arrive at Woodland Middle School by 7:30am only to find out the school did
not open up till 8:30am. I was not upset that I got there so early, and in fact, it was a great because I
got a chance to get familiar with the school and its principal, Dr. J. Stamper. Woodland Middle
school is located behind Camp Creek and is on Stone Rd. Their colors are blue and gold. The
mascots of the school are the Wolverines. Woodland's mission statement: "Woodland Middle School
is on the P.R.O.W.L. I am a Problem Solver Recognizing Opportunities, and I am Willing to become

During the first day meeting Dr. Stamper introduced me to all the teachers at the school. During this
brief meeting I learned that Woodland is a focus school. A focus school is the school's bottom 25%
is to low from the state average; the gap between the state average and the bottom 25 % is not
progressing fast enough in the achievement zone. The achievement zone was designed from a group
of schools in the district that did not meet target goals set for Fulton county school based on Georgia

In this class ninety percent of the students preferred to work by themselves than in groups; that
showed during activity. Due to the fact we had a fire drill the class only had eight minutes to
complete the square. As soon as we let the 3 period classes begin one person from each table
snatched the puzzle trying to complete it on their own. This continued throughout the class. Each

In order for students to solidify their core understanding of certain topics, homework must be used
because it allows students to recall what they have learned outside of school and learning skills can
be improved. "For example, Harris Cooper summarizes many of the positive outcomes that
homework has on a student's life. Cooper categorizes these outcomes into four different sections:
immediate achievement and learning, long–term academic benefits, nonacademic benefits, and
greater parental appreciation of and involvement in school. Under the first section, Cooper explains
that one's learning can progress rapidly because there will be an increased understanding, better
critical thinking, greater concept formation, information processing, curriculum enrichment, and
better retention of factual knowledge for a student in the learning process. In terms of long–term

Finance Major Essay
The definition of finance is rather complex but Merriam Webster seems to provide the most
comprehensive explanation, stating, "the management of revenues; the conduct or transaction of
money matters generally, especially those affecting the public, as in the fields of banking and
investment" (Merriam Webster). The management of revenues is essentially the core of what
separates the jobs of finance majors, compared to other business–related majors such as accounting
and economics. While accountants identify where the money comes from, the finance people
identify how to best use that money. While economic majors study how to grow the entire economy
of a country, finance majors study how to value a company. The reason behind my decision to
pursue a major in finance is because I want to study how to manage money in a company and the
role companies play in affecting the banking system. Also, I am convinced that majoring in finance
is one of the most effective and efficient ways in becoming a successful entrepreneur. As a finance

My First Day At Middle School
My muddy cowgirl boots touch the spotless, white concrete as I hop off the shiny golden bus. As I
start walking towards the unfamiliar doors, I see the other kids look at me then down at the ground
where my boots had stained the pure white concrete. A couple of years ago their stares would have
bothered me, but being the new kid on the block for all three years of middle school i've become
accustomed to the judgemental looks. As I reach for the door a group of girls all wearing hollister
jeans, Lily Grace t–shirts, and high top converse cut me off and strut in like they were the stars of a
red carpet premiere. I shrug it off and say to myself, "there will always be that one group." I hold the

Preparing students for life success, requires a balanced education that includes social and emotional
education. It is important that families, schools and communities come together to achieve this. This
article is researching the positive effects, of social and emotional learning of students in
kindergarten to eighth grade. This article summarizes three reviews of research on the impact of
social and emotional learning (SEL) programs on elementary school and middle age school students.
These programs promote social and emotional skills (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton,

This study was done again to see if social and emotional learning still had positive effects on
children. The study asked these questions; (a)What skills, attitudes, behaviors and academic
outcomes do SEL programs achieve for elementary and middle school (K–8) students? (b) Do SEL
program effects endure over time? (c) Are SEL programs effective in school and after school and for
students with problems and without problems and (d) What features are associated with highly
effective SEL programs? (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Pachan, Dymicki and Durlak,
2008). The study used a meta–analytic approach. The study was broken down into three reviews;
The Universal Review, The Indicated Review and The After–School Review (Weissberg, Taylor,
Schellinger, Payton, Pachan and Durlak, 2008) .
The Universal Review included 180 school–based studies involving 277,977 students. The strategy
involved classroom programming, which were a set of lessons that sought to develop social and
emotional skills such as problem and feeling identification, goal setting, conflict resolution
strategies and interpersonal problem–solving skills (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Pachan,
Dymicki and Durlak, 2008).

My Music Journey
People say that music has the ability to heal a person mentally and spiritually. But to me, music is
much more than just healing. It is a way for me to escape this world called reality and enter a world
with in my imagination through the different beats, harmony, and chorus. Only when listening to
music, I can truly feel all my emotions with each song having the power to make me remember,
from painful to happy memories. As I grew up to be the person I am today, my music journey also
grows with me. Looking back at it now, I would never want to change a single thing.
In 1973, exactly twenty–five years prior to my birth, my parents were just in elementary school.
They told me stories about their lives back then but none contained any traces of music. The only
stories about music back in those years were from my grandmother. Back then, my parents grew up
in Viet Nam in a poor family with no televisions so they couldn't really listen to any music growing
up. Although my parents could not listen to music on television like how we can now; they were
able to come to live performances by local artists held at the district's performance center every
other month because the shows were free. My grandmother told me that the music back then was
really different than how it is now. The songs served many purposes to the citizens, it was an

In so doing, I will establish that detracking is the best course of action. Tracking has been a practice
of our educational system for about a century. Tracking, or segregation by academic ability, first
occurred in Saint Louis public schools where segregation was still a dynamic of the area (Gerber 2).
Accordingly, blacks were seen as mentally inferior to the whites meaning they were placed on
lowest tracks. Soon tracking began spreading nationwide due to the public school superintendent of
Boston's "heralding [of] the new 'sorting function of schools'" in 1908 (Oakes 86). The Separate But
Equal Act was enacted in 1896, justifying the racial segregation of public facilities as long as the
facilities were equal. It was soon abolished in 1954 after Brown vs. Board of Education revealed
that separate was not equal. In 1983, about 30 years later, President Reagan's National Commission
on Excellence in Education, A Nation at Risk, evoked a movement for the setting of educational
standards that is still at play today. Recommendations from the report that the rigor and

This is a true story that is mainly about how a neighbor of mine, in my old house changed how I
viewed life. This neighbor was a middle aged man who moved in a few houses down to the right of
my parent's home. At the time, he was a tall and slim figure with slightly withered and paled skin.
My siblings began to call him stalker, because whenever we were at the grocery store, mall, or
library we would see him there too. They even thought it was appropriate to look up predators in the
area to see if he was on the list, I generally let them know that they were going a bit overboard, but
regardless of what I said they attempted to persuade me that it was alright, but I knew better. I still
believed that they went too far, for the meantime let 's call the man my siblings and I referred to as
'stalker' Edwin during the duration of this story.
The first month there was an incident with Edwin, that made me rethink the reality of humanity. The

Patience, confidence, and respect –– these are qualities often found in successful leaders. As a tutor
for young children and teens at Kumon Tutoring Center, I demonstrate these skills on a daily basis. I

someone of that profession. "Video Producer" was the topic I chose for my project, for it is my
dream job. I know it is not a plausible choice for many, and that it is unlikely I will actually pursue

Jesse Logan was a girl who had just graduated from high school when she was humiliated by her
ex–boyfriend to an unforgivable state. She sent a fully frontal nude photograph of herself to her

The instructor will educate the students about topics such as "bathing suit parts," what exactly
privacy is, why everyone wants their own privacy, and why it is necessary to not invade other's
privacy. This will be a huge basis for the future assemblies that the students will attend. It will give a

The next group of students, grades seven through nine, will increase be more relevant to what

The last group of students to take part in the annual assemblies will be students in grades ten

Today's society is filled with a lot of pressure among our young people. They're a lot more bold, and
liberal which causes a lot of influence and problems. For an example, it's almost rare to go to middle
school, and not be exposed to drugs, sex, and violence. Drugs are used to experiment, and in most
cases, it becomes a bad habit as young as 15 years old. Kids are taught that it's cool if you go against
authority, and do the complete opposite. Tweens are more sexually active than before, that it's
almost abnormal to be a virgin at age 14. Most boys lose their virginity before 15 years old, and the
percentage among young girls have increased over the years. It soon becomes "un–cool" to be a
virgin, and they're forced into peer pressure to have sex and lose their childhood. Young men usually

Personal Narrative-Culturally Divided
"Don't let the Arab play dodgeball with us. He might try killing us." As I looked around
exasperatedly for the origin of this voice, I was greeted with a barrage of laughter. I did not have the
cultural or linguistic qualifications to be deemed Arabic. Nor could my long, spindly arms cause

Visual Art : My Passion For Visual Education
I have always struggled with anxiety. I constantly worry about things I have no control over and
often obsess over the safety of my loved ones. Despite the severity of my anxiety attacks, I have
always refused to take medication to control my worrying. Thankfully, in eighth grade, I discovered
visual art. Drawing has always provided me with a mental paradise. When I create art, I can control
what happens to my piece, which helps alleviate my issues with lacking control over most
situations. As a child, art eased my concerns that I was the "weird kid" as I was the only one out of
my family and my small charter school that suffered from severe anxiety. As bell hooks noted in her
memoir, Bone Black, "The books are a new world, I am less alone" (78). I immediately related this
quote to the way I felt when I discovered my passion for visual art. I find it extremely upsetting that
the arts are usually the first programs to receive budget cuts when schools experience funding
shortages. I know I could not imagine my life without art, as I know hooks could not imagine hers
without reading, writing and poetry. According to the National Assembly of State Art Agencies,
students of rural and low income families are most often left without proper art education. Art
programs are especially susceptible to budget cuts in schools that have 35% or more of students

Profile of SAT Program Test Takers," "Students in music appreciation classes scored 63 points
higher on verbal and 44 points higher on math than students with no arts participation." Music
programs are being cut and underfunded even though these programs should be the first to be
funded; they provide a magnitude of benefits. Music should be taught progressively just like English

Language arts is a core class throughout all levels of education, and music helps young students to
be more aware of and focus on phonemes that make up the English language ("Start"). In the most
basic form, music has helped teach children the alphabet. A study done by Cohen–Taylor in 1981
stated, "...popular song lyrics used as reading materials caused middle grades students to approach
printed materials in a positive manner. Students had been approaching reading materials with
apathy...kids became enthusiastic and excited about using lyrics as reading materials. Reading skills
can be effectively taught using popular song lyrics" (Eady and Wilson "Restructuring Music's" 244).
This method would be well accepted throughout student bodies across the nation. A distinct tie
exists between music and the human brain. "It speaks to the emotions, the angst, the happiness, and
it really ties kids into their emotions. Everything seems so life and death, so right now" (Gutjahr).
There are one hundred billion neurons in the brain (Levitin 85). Almost every part of the brain lights
up when a person listens to, plays, or reads music. Playing an instrument requires carefully timed

The White House is where this attention is needed, but policies and laws are still lacking in states.
The government needs to take this seriously in order for those down the chain of command to do so
as well. Here's my version of psychology to this matter. Stealing is illegal and there are severe
consequences if one commits the crime, depending on the severity of it. This was taught to us at
home, and throughout our growing lives. Without these laws, and penalties, we would probably be
in a very different world right now. I'm not naïve to the fact that stealing still happens, but bottom

History is passed down from generation to generation through stories and these stories about
traditions are an important part of conversations in the Chinese culture (Wang, Leichtman &
Davies, 2010).
The Mexicans enjoy teaching about traditions through acts and events where as the Chinese prefer
passing down traditions through elaborate stories that are based on truths, but will captivate the
young minds of their children. These two cultures share many priorities, but have very different
ways of carrying out those cultural priorities. Though these two cultures have many differences, but
for literally being on opposite ends of the globe, they share a surprising about of commonalities. We
interact with both on a daily basis in the melting pot that defines our American society. Both have

that education is not doled out equally despite our rather relentless fight against inequality. When
academic achievement is examined on the basis of race, class, and gender, widening academic gaps

Tracking, or homogenous grouping, is a process in which groups of students are assigned to
different sets of classes, or tracks, based on factors such as academic performance, teacher
recommendation, and potential for acquiring more knowledge (Oakes 3; Gamoran and Mare 1152).
Schools use tracking to determine class placement for students for optimal instruction. The

I heART writing
Ever since I was a child, I have always had the inclination to pick up a crayon rather than a pencil.
From learning how to write my ABC's to dreading over typing eight page papers, learning how to
progressively read and write has manifested into a rollercoaster within my life, emotionally, that is.
But don't get me wrong, writing has slowly inched its way into my being and will continue to stay
for my journey through academia. I honestly feel that there's some sort of creature within my mind
that prevents me from deriving happiness from english–related material. Though in the midst of all
the chaos, I have developed an alternate outlet to express myself. An outlet where I wouldn't have to
think about forming sentences or using words that I don't know but use anyway. An outlet in which I
find solace and truly shows who I am as a person. The outlet of art.
During several moments of my life , I often asked my parents questions about my development,
such as "How did I learn to read?" or "What was my first word?" Their responses have always
baffled me, usually stating that I loved books and practicing how to spell when I was a child. I was a
very curious elementary student who loved discovering the world one step at a time with my tiny
but eager mind. Apparently, I loved series books such as Judy B. Jones and The Magic School Bus,

were awarded third prize in a dance competition to promote smoke–free campus commissioned by

賽) By attending competitions in groups, I have learned to compete against myself, and to watch and

choreography, setting up the venue, and getting propagandas well organized, I have seen myself
growing stronger bit by bit. Another skill I have acquired is communication skills. As a leader of a
dance team, I have learned to take care of team members' emotions in a more delicate way. In
addition, I have taught myself better ways to take suggestions from leaders of other teams. More

struggled with the crippling fear of gaining weight and a completely distorted view of myself. I was
insecure and focused on weight at a very early age and continuously obsessed with body image
throughout high school. I grew up in Dallas, Texas until I was about twelve and then I moved with

I should shift and cut the food on my plate as I distracted those around me with engaging
conversation. The curtain of denial wore thinner while my veil of deception became more opaque. I
stopped having my period completely by sixteen. I was warped in the delusion of feminine culture
and what society had described beauty to be. The look of square shoulders and concave stomachs
was more than a goal but a state of mind. In school I felt like everyone knew I was fat. There was no
doubt in my mind they watched me with the same disgust I found I had for myself. I couldn't tell
anyone my concerns about my health. Of course these were not the same concerns one with
crippling insecurity about weight and appearance but more of how could I last the day without
getting too dizzy. How could I stop from falling asleep in class or sleeping as soon as I got home.
Hiding became a way of life. The distorted view of myself was due to what would later be
diagnosed as anorexia nervosa.
I did not keep an open mind to alternative perspectives at that time. My father and step–mother had
expressed concerns before and I was becoming more aggressive and irritable with every accusation.
I knew that my relationships with those around me were tested by my actions.

Meaning of Bullying Behaviour Bullying is a pervasive problem in schools that affects a lot of
students. In recent times, it is becoming a bigger crisis with vicious consequences. Bullying is not
just a child's play, but a terrifying experience many school children face everyday (Aluede, 2006;

think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education." Education is teaching
the whole person; not just the intellectual side, but also the social and emotional side. Social and
Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students gain the skills necessary to
recognize and manage all their emotions, build relationships, solve interpersonal problems, and
make effective and ethical decisions. The significance of SEL continues to grow in the context of
policy debates concerning school improvement and individual student achievement. A review found
that SEL programs improved students' performance in the classroom, not just their emotional
performance. Specifically, they found an increase of 11% to 17% in test scores (1). SEL has just
recently made it into mainstream educational curriculum, but at many schools, including Stevenson,
they haven 't found an efficient way to asses the SEL standings of individual students. Tools to
assess social and emotional competency is broad and includes instruments that look at population–
level changes in social–emotional constructs, program outcomes, and process outcomes. The
measures come from multiple frameworks such as youth risk and protective factors and youth

Personal Reflection
Participating in the Sixth Year in Administration course work at Sacred Heart University has
allowed me the opportunity to develop myself as a researcher and professional author through
writing a thesis. This process took place over three classes with the final class running
simultaneously with Internship II. The tertiary course involved conducting the specific research,
analyzing the data collected, and writing the analysis and conclusion chapters of the thesis. Creating
a useable survey was a more challenging process than I anticipated. With appreciation, I was granted
permission to use a survey developed by Wertz, Carpenter, and Fewell as the foundation of my
thesis. Items were added or deleted to meet the needs of the North Haven Community. To gain face
validity, I reached out to professionals in other districts to review my survey and share suggestions
to improve it with me. After the survey was disseminated, the responses trickled in. Upon receipt of
responses from various staff members, I realized that I would need to convert some of the verbal
answer choices to a numerical code prior to being able to analyze the data. Luckily using software
such as an Excel spreadsheet this could be done without much complication.
The majority of this experience was enjoyable for me. It was challenging to be working in a new
building and learning a new curriculum at the same time that I was trying to complete my research

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students gain the skills necessary to recognize and manage all their emotions, build relationships, solve interpersonal problems, and make effective and ethical decisions. The significance of SEL continues to grow in the context of policy debates concerning school improvement and individual student achievement. A review found that SEL programs improved students' performance in the classroom, not just their emotional performance. Specifically, they found an increase of 11% to 17% in test scores (1). SEL has just recently made it into mainstream educational curriculum, but at many schools, including Stevenson, they haven 't found an efficient way to asses the SEL standings of individual students. This process took place over three classes with the final class running simultaneously with Internship II. The tertiary course involved conducting the specific research, analyzing the data collected, and writing the analysis and conclusion chapters of the thesis. Creating a useable survey was a more challenging process than I anticipated. With appreciation, I was granted permission to use a survey developed by Wertz, Carpenter, and Fewell as the foundation of my thesis. Items were added or deleted to meet the needs of the North Haven Community. To gain face validity, I reached out to professionals in other districts to review my survey and share suggestions to improve it with me. After the survey was disseminated, the responses trickled in. Upon receipt of responses from various staff members, I realized that I would need to convert some of the verbal answer choices to a numerical code prior to being able to analyze the data. Luckily using software such as an Excel spreadsheet this could be done without much complication. The majority of this experience was enjoyable for me.
