Reasons For Police Brutality
As recent incidents of police brutality plague our nation toward minority groups, especially that of
African Americans, the question asked by many is if such deadly force necessary, and what other
actions could have led to a better outcome? Although our primary thought is to blame police officers
for death, we must realize that sometimes deadly action is necessary and anyone put in a similar
situation would act the same way. According to the U.S Supreme Court in the 1985 case, Tennessee
vs Garner, police force can only be used when, "[the] suspect is a significant threat to officer or
others." Later, in the case of Graham vs. Connor, the Supreme Court ruled that "officers who use
force must be judged on the totality of circumstances and a standard of objective reasonableness.
Force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the
20/20 vision of hindsight;" however, this does not excuse police brutality, and officers must face
penalties for taking someone's life. Cases such as, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice
illustrate when police need to be punished for their actions and be held accountable for violence

The use of less–lethal force by law enforcement personnel started in the "1960s during the civil
rights and anti–war movements" (Wilson 218). These movements assisted tin creating situations in
which large groups of people were coming into contact with law enforcement. Given the emotional
status to these situations, violent encounters started becoming more widespread. As such, less lethal
methods of crowd/riot control became the focus for law enforcement. At the time, chemical
agents/irritants were the most frequently used method to control riots. Other less than lethal
weapons, but not limited to are, wooden, rubber, and bean–bag bullets/rounds, were also being
introduced, but given restrictions on law enforcement budgets, these suffered from the lack of
testing before being used.
However, the term "non–lethal" is and has been used by most manufacturers to describe these types
of weapons. It is significant to distinguish that the term "less lethal" is more suitable, as there has
been an unknown number of unreported and reported deaths following the use of these weapons.
Although the less lethal options offer a safer substitute to the traditional use of force, it would be
hard to create any weapon as less–then–lethal under all situations, given the many different
situations that these methods may be used in.

Lately, there has been a controversy about gun control due to gun crime. Now, there has been an
uprising of conversation about the carrying of guns on college campuses. Guns should not be
allowed on college campuses because it is very dangerous. There's alternative self–defense,

stable or are immature.

The morals and beliefs the officer has also plays a huge role in his/her behavior. Unfortunately, there
are officers that are sexist, racist, etc. Since there are officers with poor morals, there are the
stereotypes of officers being racist. A person's morals will determine how they react to a certain
person or group. Racial Profiling is becoming more known and common when talking about police
brutality, especially in higher–crime neighborhoods. More times than not, African American males
have the highest percentage of crime in high–crime neighborhoods. Wihbey and Kille state young
black males are twenty one times more likely to undergo police brutality by getting shot than their
white counterparts (1). This causes the officers in that county to profile anyone of that appearance as
