The Importance Of School Shootings
It is a lot of school shooting that has been happing from generations to generation. School shooting happen across the world, but it mainly happing
in the United States of America. We as teacher and parents never know why students kill or shoot themselves and others in the school. This essay
will talk about reason why students do these crazy school shootings and how we can create better schooling for our future children, so they will not
go on a ram page and kill innocent people. The book I will be highlighting the book, "The Bully Society" by Jessie Klein. On December 1, 1997,
Micheal Carneal rode to school with his sister and brought two shot guns, two rifles, and a .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol. When his sister dropped

Their masculinity to be tested by anyone. They go and prove that their tough and they prove that by going on a whelm page and shooting the whole
school up. This paragraph came from the chapter two, "Masculinity and White Supremacy". In October 1997, Luke Woodham was at his home in the
morning. He beat and stapped his mother to death. He had hidden a gun under his coat and made his way to his high school in Pearl, Mississippi where
he killed two students and severally wounded seven others. The main target was his ex–girlfriend named Christina Menetce. He said that he did intend
on shooting her and did not know why he shot the others. When he was in the confessional he pointed out that his mother never loved him. He also
stated that she would say very horrible things like he would never amount to nothing in life. They real reason he shot up the school was mainly because
of the ex–girlfriend. The ex would flirt with other guys right in front of Luke face. She would also mention to Luke how other guys were cute.
When they broke up he was very devastated. He did not eat nor sleep and did not want to live without her. He wanted to show her that he was more

School Shooting Analysis
''The more they identify with the characteristics of the story, the more it will increase their level of risk,'' said J. Kevin Cameron, director of the
Canadian Center for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response, who has consulted on school shootings in the United States. The media is an
accomplice to mass shooting because of them naming and describing all the aspects of the crime that was committed. The news stations describe these
crimes in details saying exactly what the perpetrator needs to hear to commit a crime just like it. They name the shooter, they describe his
characteristics, they detail the crime, they number the victims, and they rank him against other successful attackers. ''The more they identify with the

media coverage may prompt copycat crimes, but shining the national spotlight on mass and school shootings can have benefits, too. It encourages
students and adults to come forward with information about suspicious people (Smart, 2015). We need to understand why these people commit these
crimes in order to stop these crimes from happening. Even if the people panic from these stories being on the news it is good to know that these things
could happen. People also think that children in school should know that something that this, even though it is rare, could

In the society we live in today, it is hard to go for a long period of time without hearing of or about a type of disaster which has occurred that could
have been prevented. The worst kind of disasters to hear or learn about consist of the disasters in which a school has been involved. With the
increasing in security at schools to prevent fatal disasters, many questions have started to rise with concerns about whether or not if the amount of
security necessary. In other words, does the amount of security in schools help prevent more disasters, or does the opposition out way the deposition?
The amount of security in schools does impact the prevention of fatal disasters.
To fully understand the answer, one must first look into the background of the perpetrators, and find the whys. The number one reason people commit
such horrendous crimes are that they were victims of bullying. Most people are bullied because they may be different from the ... Show more content on

Same of the key characteristics that lead to school shootings are: the number of kids enrolled in the school, urban or suburban location, and public
funding (DE). A current study examined many key characteristics of all schools in which random (38) and targeted (96) fatal shootings occurred
within the United States between 1966 and 2009. These were compared with a group (138) of schools randomly selected to represent the population
of all schools in the United States. In past shootings the perpetrator or perpetrators had been or were associated with the school (DE). It was not as if
a man from California came to a random school in West Virginia and shot at random. All past school shooting was preventable in that they were all
premeditated crimes. People could have been more aware of the behavior of the perpetrators. The perpetrator was sometimes a person that the school

School Violence : Causes Of School Shootings
School violence is the act that threatens and alters the school environment with harmful consequences on students and educators' wellbeing and impact
students in a negative way (Reininghaus, Castro, & Frisancho, 2013). It is obvious now than ever that we lives in a world where the safety and
security of individuals are in question, especially that of school students where safety against school shootings remain everyone's major concern. The
terror of Virginia Tech mass murder in 2007 and Sandy Hook ElementarySchool shooting in 2012 traumatized the nation. As of the time when Sandy
Hook Elementary School shooting took place, the massacre was considered the second–deadliest school shooting in the United States when Adam
Lanza, a Twenty–year–old carried armory of hundreds of rounds of deadly ammo, that was enough to kill nearly every students in the school (Lee,
2013). Thus, the causes of this growing problem of school violence are: Bullying, psychiatric drugs and access to weapon.
Bullying is a huge cause of school violence, traditional school bulling can take place on school play ground, school bus or hall way while as a result of
technological advancement, cyber bullying has become 'borderless cancer' that sometimes turn the school environment into killing zone. Both cyber
and traditional bullying inflicts physical hurt and sometimes physiological suffering on one or more students. Therefore, according to Bartol & Bartol

School Shootings
A school shooting occurred on February 14, 2018. The shooter is 19–year–old Nikolas Cruz. Cruz had planned this for a while. He slipped into the
school carrying a rifle case, pulled a fire alarm, waited for students to leave there classrooms then shot up the school. After which, when the students
were being evacuated, he proceed to leave behind other students to be unnoticed. Cruz killed 17 students and adults, and wounded 14 others.
I believe the school shooting could've been preventable. Through the years of 2008–2017, there were 18 warning calls all about Cruz's actions about
school shootings. Also Cruz had some very disturbing post on social media. Including one stating, "I'm going to become a professional school shooter".

Stop School Shootings
School shootings have become a major problem not only in South Carolina, but in the United States. School shootings have shockingly become more
likely now than ever. A recent report showed that over 230 school shootings have arose since 2013, meaning that there has been at least 1 school
shooting per week for the last 4 years. Once students experience these traumatic happenings, the district as a whole receives lower standardized test
scores, lessened student enrollment and even frightened parents. Parents begin to lose faith in the school system and no longer find comfort in
sending their child to and from that school. By definition, school shootings are anytime a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or
on a school campus or school grounds. This connection question's objective to read about a specific school shooting, it stood out to me that every child
has a motive for the school shooting – whether big or small. Therefore, I have conducted research to find out why and how to stop school violence.
In my opinion, teachers most certainly should be able to identify and designate those who appear to carry out school shootings. Being a teacher puts
you in a front row seat to critique and evaluate signs that may not be shown to parents. Teachers should be able to identify children who seem
hopeless, distracted, or are even victims of bullying to get them the necessary help that they deserve. I also feel as though being at school brings out a

Pros And Cons Of School Shootings
School shootings are terrifying and a big problem in today's society. Schools have added lockdown drills, bullet proof glass and metal detectors.
School should be a safe area for children to learn instead of fearing for their life. Instead of buying metal detectors and hiring more officers, there is
a much easier solution in order to decrease and prevent school shootings. We have to be more alert about securing weapons at home and being aware
of suspicious behavior at school in order to keep children and faculty safe. As a child left for school one morning, his parents thought that he had been
acting very odd and different. Even with their suspicion, they said goodbye and let their son go to school.
It wasn't till later when they had noticed an empty spot in their gun case where a pistol and shotgun used to sit. They rushed to the school and while
searching through the halls for their son, their ears echoed with a gunshot from one of the classrooms. Following the gunshot, they rushed into the
classroom and immediately disarmed and physically detained their son until police arrived. The only damages the son had caused, was a plate–sized
hole in the ceiling. If the parents had gotten to the school even one minute later, their son could have been labeled as a murderer.
It is sickening to know that a child was able to sneak past his parents, teachers, and students with two firearms on his body. His parents were lucky they
arrived when they did because many of people could have been hurt or even worse murdered. Obviously, the child that brought the two firearms to
school should be the one punished, but what about the parents. The parents that did not have a weapon that could easily end someone's life, properly
locked up or hidden away. If parents are going to carelessly leave firearms unlocked with ammo nearby, what is stopping a child from doing wrong
with that firearm? Leaving firearms unlocked with any aged child around, hoping they don't touch it is a dangerous and irresponsible act.
When school shootings occur, the individual that brings the weapon to school should be the one punished. However, when the parents irresponsibly
leave a firearm unlocked they should face a punishment as well. "68% of school

Mass Shooting In Schools
Mass shootings have become one of the most fearful events that could happen in elementary schools, high schools, and College campuses. These
violent actions committed by a number of individuals have happened for many years and will continue happening unless prevented. Individuals like
James Holmes opened fire in a Colorado movie theater, killing twelve individuals and injuring twenty, John Sawahri shot five students dead in Santa
Monica College also injuring four individuals. However Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold executed the most horrific act of school violence in United
States History. These two individuals managed to take the lives of twelve students, a teacher and managed to take their own life in the process. This
act of crime has spread through America, leaving no one safe. These crimes have occurred not too long ago and can easily happen in the future. As a

No one just wakes up one day to realize they became a criminal; this process generally takes a long and slow build. Guns opened to those who
really should not have them can be seen as one of the main reasons as to why mass shootings exist all around America. Investigators should find a
way to keep these killing machines away from those who should not have them. Living with a abusive family and not getting any attention when a
person needs it the most can also cause one to build hate towards others. Always entertained by violent movies and video games will cause a child's
brain to think that the world mirrors the violence they obtain from these games and movies. What happens in the games can also happen in the real
world, especially when violent games are involved. Searching for revenge or simply seeking for attention are also reasons to mass shootings. All of
this buildup in an individual's life can cause a child to grow up into having a mind of a criminal. However, solutions to stop this from occurring are

The Parents' Role in School Shootings Essay
When children commit a horrible act such as a school shooting their parents often look for someone or something to blame rather than looking at what
role they, as parents, may have had in the tragedy. The often targeted entertainers, video game developers, teachers, drug companies, and writers are
rarely, if ever, responsible for such tragic outcomes and, unfortunately, often become victims as a result of lawsuits filed in an attempt to place blame on
them. The parents of dangerous children must be scrutinized and sued alongside every other entity being blamed for the heinous crimes that children
commit.

Before the 1999 Columbine tragedy, there was the 14–year–old boy in Paducah, Kentucky who, in 1997, went on a shooting spree at his local school.
Parents of 3 of the shooting victims filed lawsuits against 25 media companies seeking $130 million in damages, citing that the shooter, Michael
Carneal, learned how to shoot a gun by playing video and computer games. The lawsuits further implied that violent movies and internet pornography
were to blame for the boy's behavior (Holmstrom, par. 6).
In both the Columbine and the Paducah, Kentucky cases the parents of the shooters were sued on the grounds that they should have known, and
prevented, the tragedies from occurring. According to an article written by Mark Walsh regarding the Paducah shooting, a state–law negligence suit
"named 45 defendants, including McCracken County...teachers...who allegedly failed to interpret "warning signals" [referring to a paper that Carneal
had written depicting a fictitious school shooting] that 14–year–old Michael Carneal would go on a murderous rampage" (Walsh, par. 4). The case
against the employees of the McCracken County School District was dismissed by Judge William Shadoan, citing, "We cannot expect those teachers
and administrators to be psychiatrists, lawyers, psychologists, or physicians" (Walsh, par. 15). These school employees should have never been put in

The Hazelwood School District in Hazelwood, Missouri was one of the districts affected by the events that were happening in Ferguson, Missouri
with the deathly shooting of Michael Brown. Hazelwood West High School Special Education Teacher Jodi Schutzenhofer was one of those teachers
that found it difficult to try and find an equal balance and understanding of how students within the school were dealing with the grand jury decision.
"I did not really have any types of group discussions with my students, but I had several questions like, 'what happens now?' and 'why did they have
to burn down the city?' for which there is really no good answer. I think it was fear that something so awful happened so close to their homes." And

Whether media comes in the form of news coverage, Facebook updates, or even a text message, the media has been transporting information globally
with just the touch of a button. But what happens when media is stricken with negative news? How do they go about portraying that negative
information without putting their viewers into a worldwide panic? Or is that even their job? With the Ferguson crisis that was currently happening at
this point in time, the media played an important role, as they were the ones who were informing media watchers and viewers about what was
happening. But many were debating whether or not the news stations did and effective job when reporting to the community about Ferguson. With
headline such as, "Officer shoots unarmed teen," and "Police Brutality at its Finest," the media was one of the first places that people went to look for
more information regarding Michael Brown. When the shooting of Michael Brown took place, news stations were one of the first ones to arrive on the

School Shootings : The Crisis Of School Shootings
The effort of this paper is designed to provide an audience with the basic framework in preventing, reacting to, and recovering from a school
shooting. By analyzing the crisis of a school shooting, this paper will lay out the practical steps in preparing schools, communities, and local agencies
for a tragedy that has already shook many communities across the nation. This paper will also follow the steps necessary to implement and evaluate a
school shooting preparedness plan. In concluding this paper, school staff, local agencies, and families will be able to take the practical steps towards
providing a safe and comfortable learning environment for students.
The Crisis at Hand Over the past couple of decades, school shooting have seemed to occur often–– continuously shocking the nation and reminding
everyone that no community is exempt from such horror. One main contributor of this hysteria is found within the media. At the catalyst of this
hysteria, lies the horrific Columbine shooting in 1999. Since then, school shootings have received ample coverage–– some argue that this has
romanticized school shootings, others argue that is has provided condemning coverage of the often insane perpetrators. In the first year after the
Columbine shooting, over 10,000 articles were written about the event, likely setting the stage for the nationwide desire for constant coverage of such
events (Elsass et al, p. 445–446). Nevertheless, school shootings still offer a new risk that requires

The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting
The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting, 1989 Some refer to it as The Slaughter in a School Yard, The Stockton Massacre, and others as The
Cleveland Elementary School Shooting. Something as horrifying as someone shooting down innocent children playing at recesses on school
grounds was never expected here in the United States of America. Although there was past cases of school shootings, this was the first shooting to
be televised on national television of its magnitude (Taining, P et al., 2014). A mass murderer is defined as someone who slaughters many people
at one time. This particular incident unfortunately was not the slaughter of people, but it was children. It happened around 11:40 AM on January
17th, 1989 in Stockton, California. A man by the name of Patrick Edward Purdy opened fire on children ages six through nine playing at recess on
school grounds of Cleveland Elementary School. This tragic case brought questions to people everywhere in our nation as to why it was so easy for
a mentally unstable individual such as Patrick Purdy to enter a gun store and purchase a semiautomatic weapon ("Slaughter in a," 2001). Patrick
Edward Purdy was born November 10, 1964 in Fort Lewis Washington. His parents divorced at age two. He is described as an adolescent as quiet but
unable to cope with anything. He had a troubled relationship with his mother and was made to leave his mother's home after an altercation between the

It is great that some people want to come together and help the problem. School shootings are a huge problem and something needs to be done quick.
There are a number of ideas that people could come up with to stop shootings. The article states that schools can have mini sessions of social and

Each person believes they know the best way. Some argue tougher gun laws are the answer. Others believe arming teachers would be best, still
others say there is a need for metal detectors at each entry point. However, above all those "changes," perhaps the single best way to prevent this
type of violence is to share the hope of Jesus with those who would seek to act in such a violent manner. It's impossible to know how many instances
could be prevented if the perpetrators were led to Christ and given much needed hope in their young lives.
How to Share The Gospel
There are many ways Christians can share the gospel with those around them. One way is the Dare 2 Share Live that is happening on October 13th,
2018. This event was created to mobilize some 25,000 teenagers in their own communities. It will be from coast–to–coast and include encompass 100
different cities. The purpose is to equip these teens to go out and share the good news of Jesus with their classmates and friends. Equipping teens
themselves to reach their peers makes the most sense as they are the ones who have the opportunity to share Christ's love with those around them day

Since everyone is from completely different backgrounds, there is no way to figure out all the reasons for why they do it. According to Katherine
S. Newman, there are five things that all school shooters have in common. At some point in their life, they were seen as different in some way,
shape, or form. All shooters also suffer from some sort of depression. Because of the depression, they look to be problem solvers. They want to be
known and get the glamour and street credit. They crave the power, status, and history. They feel as if the glorious feeling of death will cure the
quiet, dark, and alone side that they have. The shooter also broadcasts their intentions and the attacks are never spontaneous. By giving little hints,
they try to gain friends and keep the ones they have safe. They all want to have social status or revenge on a group that does not want them.
(Newman). Although these reasons all make sense, it is such a broad spectrum of ideas and characteristics. There is no way of knowing the motive
for a persons actions, especially if it is not being looked for or talked about. It is important to be aware of these characteristics because it is one of the
first steps in preventing these horrible events from

When thinking about school shootings names like Columbine and Sandy Hook pop up. Those are the most tragic by far, however everyone always
asks why such a horrible crime happens, but no one has never stopped and researched why such hate crimes like these happen. Instead people resort to

there's one thing I've picked up from the media is how they portray school shootings with mental illness, but Alfred.edu/teen violence says, "They want

Media always say that one was mentally ill, or that one was going through a change at the time they committed such crime, instead of looking up
resources, and finding out facts that may have triggered them to commit the crime. For example, the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, where
nine were shot in killed inside of an historical black church, and only two survived. Dylan Roof who is a Caucasian, male, who walked inside the
historic Emanuel African Methodist church one Wednesday night and attended bible study for an hour before he decided to take the lives of harmless,
innocent people. However, CNN electronic article says nothing about fixing the number one and obvious problem with this situation, which is the
race. Instead, out of context they say, "Roof had an unlabeled pill bottle with a drug believed to be suboxone, which is used to treat opiate addiction."
(Elles, Payne, Perez, & Ford, 2015.): and even proceed to compare it with other school shootings like the Columbine and the drugs they were on that
made them mentally ill. Furthermore, when google–ing reasons why school shootings happen, the majority of articles and websites that popup are
about mental illness. But when researching about the causes of school shootings you'll see that mental illness is not the number one cause, but it is
the number one cause that our media portrays so that beneficial Americans will not seem so bad in the public eye. But what if they stop the biggest
problem that I've repeated over and over; is even in my title. To be able to shoot anyone, you must first have something to shoot with. If they put a
stop to guns, and events like these still occur, what will be the excuse of innocent lives being lost? Or will it still be the

A Method Of Preventing School Shootings
A method of preventing school shootings would be to acknowledge risk factors that the student is facing. For example, bullying is a risk factor for
school shootings. In a research study done in 2001 of 37 school shootings, it was reported that 75% of the school shooters felt bullied, threatened, or
injured by others in which most of the shooters in the report had experienced long–term bullying and harassment from their peers (Duplechain &
Morris, 2014). In addition, the authors do state: "School personnel too often accept that children get teased and bullied every day, because teachers,
parents, students, and other adults have grown up thinking that bullying is a normal part of school life. It has easily become an accepted part of
today's school culture" (Ibid, 2014). The authors believe that schools view bullying as something that students should get used to. This does show
how bullying is an issue in schools. It is not solely to blame in regards to school shootings, but is a risk factor for them. Relationships and past
traumas are risk factors for school shootings (Duplechain & Morris, 2014). The author states in regards to relationships and school shootings
"The lack of attachment with their parents or caregivers at the beginning of their life to some of the school shooters. Sueng–Hui Cho, who was the
shooter of the Virginia Tech Massacreon April 16, 2007 suffered from this kind of risk factor. Cho did not communicate with his parents or those

School Shootings : The Dangers Of School Shootings
Have you ever wondered why a school shooter pulls the trigger? Crime is a very serious problem in the United States. School shootings, is a type of
crime that is getting more dangerous as the years go on. School shooters are shaped by their environment due to, interactions at school, in the
community, and at home.
Interactions at school There are many problems at school that could lead to a school shooting. For example, bullying, arguments, disliking people that
are at the school, having another person be mean to other people, and having a staff member confront them. Some problems that might allow school
shootings to happen is not having permission to look through possessions to make sure there is no firearms, and looking in cars to make sure there are
none on campus.

Crosby, Stills And School Shootings
School shootings are something that we as American have unfortunately become numb to. Every time another one occurs, we all pause and think
about how terrible it is that someone would get to the point mentally where they would open fire on students, and then we move on. Perhaps no
school shooting shook the world quite as much as the Kent State shooting did, when the National Guard, thus the government itself, opened fire and
killed four college students. In the wake of this tragedy, Neil Young came together with fellow musicians David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham
Nash to write and perform the song titled simply Ohio. This song, along with other war protest songs of the time, relayed the raw emotions felt in the
wartime atmosphere and helped to shape and encourage public opinion of the Vietnam War. Crosby, Stills, and Nash came together as a music group
in 1969, and later recruited Young to join. That year, the group played at the famed Woodstock festival, and in 1970 released their album DГ©jГ Vu,
which would become known as one of the greatest albums of the early 1970s. Some of the most well–known and best–loved songs on this album were
Carry On, 4+20, Helpless, Country Girl, and Teach Your Children, featuring Jerry Garcia on steel guitar. Unfortunately to fans at the time, the group
did not stay together in its entirety for very long; before they split up, though, the release of Ohio would become perhaps their most recognizable song.

They show all the facts that have happened and show awareness. Letting everyone know about it and not limit it to a certain school or group of
people helps a lot too. The biggest one is that it is through the web. Anyone can access it easily and learn about it. The second organization is a
student teacher type of charity, Students Against Violence Everywhere Program. This is a student driven organization that helps to unite students
and provides literature and research to build awareness and enhance communication skills. It originated from the school idea by having a children

are free to students and teachers and can be delivered even though lesson plans. Some schools decide to have a lesson going and incorporate good
behavior and fray from violence intention. Which is a great idea to have children get good mindsets instead of growing up with violence all around
them, because anywhere there is really a way to find or see violence. Anybody really qualifies, but again this is a school ran organization. So the school
decides to start it up, or the teachers, or students. But then the resources are really distributing secretly, through lesson plans in the classroom

The Problem Of School Shootings
"How many more school shootings do we need before we start talking about this as a social problem, and not merely a random collection of isolated
incidents?" said Jackson Katz, activist against violent acts. This quote perfectly shows that school security needs to be improved and taken more
seriously. There have been 275 school shootings since Columbine. The virginia tech massacre is the largest modern shooting in U.S history with 32
killed and 17 wounded. If precautions were taken this could have been prevented.25% of teenagers are exposed to hate related graffiti within school
grounds.Schools now are filled with drug dealing, wepons, and acts of violence. There needs to be a solution to this growing problem. I believe every
school should have metal detectors,an on guard police officer, a closing metal door,a K9 unit, and faculty are required to wear IDs.I believe if add just
one of these security measures the school will be safer than it had before.
To begin, the metal detector would be at every door so that once you enter, a noise would be made if you have metal.A teacher would come to the
detector and check the student and check their belongings. If students brought knives, and other weapons they could be identified. There would be
cameras on every metal detector with a person at every detector and the office can lockdown if any bad action were to happen."There is a lot of talk
now about metal detectors and gun control. Both are good things. But they are no more a solution than

"I was terrified. I quickly ducked behind a white truck. I did not dare look up. Crouched behind the tire, I was scared to move an inch. Then a
silver cylinder landed about five feet away from me. I could smell the burning and see smoke coming out of both ends, so I covered my head with
my hands. I didn't know it then, but it was a pipe bomb. In seconds the bomb exploded and shrapnel rained down on the pavement." That's what it

When I think of school shootings my mind immediately goes back to the Columbine High school shooting. This was the first school shooting that I
was actually old enough to remember and understand. I still remember having a moment of silence for all of those involved. The New world
encyclopedia states "Columbine High School shooting was one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. On April 20, 1999, two
teenagers killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The incident drew worldwide attention. It led
to widespread discussion over gun control and the prevention of school violence." (Funk & Wagnalls) According to Wikipedia from 2011 to 2015

Their goal is to help schools and the police recognize which students are moving from interest in killing to weapons acquisition. (New York Times)
After the shootings take place that's not the end for the killers or the victims, unless the end result is suicide for themselves. Some killers take the
easy way out, in my opinion the coward way. After they take innocent lives some then turn and kill themselves. I feel like this is an easy way out.
They don't have to explain the reasons for their actions or suffer any consequences. Many families feel they receive justice if the killer has to serve
time or give a reason for the gruesome crime. As a result the family is left with unanswered questions as well hate because their loved one is gone
and the killer didn't have to suffer at all. On the contrary, some killers are so mentally disturbed they stick around or put the police on a chase to
search for them. And once they're caught they go through long trials using tax payer dollars. Lots of them spend a lot of time going thru psych
evaluations and therapy as well. It follows then this mental illness is very serious and should never go overlooked.
The steps that schools can take to try and protect students and staff from school shootings include the following. In my opinion all schools should have
metal detectors implemented. I say this because regardless to the neighborhood the school is in, you can never determine as stated when a mass murder

The article, "No there has not been 18 school shootings in 2018. That number is flat wrong" by John Woodrow Cox and Steven Rich, made me
realize even more the dangers and how common school shootings are getting. This is very sad, and frightening, to see happen for kids of all ages. I
would have never thought to see the day when students risk their lives and are afraid to go to school. Even teachers are putting their life on the line
now and they do not even get paid enough most of the time, but that is a different matter. The point is that we as a country, state, county, city, and

The Consequences Of School Shootings
After written by Francine Prose is a dystopian novel about a nearby school shooting and the attempts to become a safer program and school to gain the
result that students feel safer while gaining their education. Following the school shooting, a large amount of safety measurements and guidelines are
enforced to prevent it from happening at Central High School. In 2013, Everytown which is a gun safety organization began tracking gunfire in schools
and at college and universities – public reports that a firearm was discharged inside a school building or on school or campus grounds – and over the
next three years identified 160 qualifying incidents. (Everytown) This is evidence which shows that this is still a social issue today. Not only is
this social issue turned into a dystopian novel, but is also depicted in our real world society today as you can see the measures. A social relation to
this can also be 9/11. If you have ever been on a plane dating back before September 11th, 2001 you would know that security and customs weren't
as dramatic and as much as an uphold until the attack occurred. Since the attack many security policies were put into force and immediately there
was a change to eliminate this problem from occurring again. Just like the book After the school started enforcing policies and guidelines to ensure
this doesn't happen again. In the US, school shootings aren't something that is rare, unfortunately, they happen quite often. Due to the violence the
school must enforce rules that may seem bezerk, in the book rules began to be enforced, for example, the students were no longer able to wear the
color red because the shooters at the school wore the color red. A societal comparison can be the dress codes enforced in schools today to eliminate
gang alliance, violence, and risky behavior. In the novel, Francine Prose uses a good choice of diction while developing the tone of the story. When
frightening conflicts happen nearby it tends to affect the individuals involved or closely surrounded by the event for a period of time. To continue,
Thomas's dad discusses the nearby shooting with his son and states, "It's worrisome... I guess I didn't know how bad things were until the school started

School Shootings, It Shook The Nation
Flooding every major media outlet making headlines across the country are school shootings, it shook the nation when twenty, first graders and six
adults were killed by Adam Lanza, a twenty year old man who shot his mother in the head before taking her car and driving to Sandy Hook
Elementary. Other school shooting have occurred since then and it brought up the issue of gun control, some politicians even supported the idea of
giving teachers guns to have in the classroom. I am against allowing teachers to have guns in the classroom in the name of protection and security.
What is your initial point of view?
My initial point of view is adding more guns to a hostile situation by giving teachers guns does not solve schools security issues in trying to keep
children safe. Spending valuable money should not go into training teachers on how to use a gun, it should go into educating all staff members and
students on emergency drills and lock downs in case of a school shooting. Even upgrading security systems would be more helpful in a hostile situation
rather than depending on one person killing another to save everyone.
How can you define your point of view more clearly?
I can define my point of view more clearly by asking questions that maybe many people have not wanted to ask for the fear of receiving a selfish
answer. For example has anyone asked a teacher, even with the training and the gun in your hand are you really ready to kill someone? The state and
the school are

Characteristics Of School Shootings
What characteristics, if any, do school shooters have in common? Can they all be lumped into one group of empathy–lacking, sadistic, depressed
individuals, or do they each act due to their own separate reasons? Although the media makes it seem as if school campus massacres are becoming an
increasingly common threat, the reality is that an event of that caliber is exceptionally rare. While it is true that no two perpetrators are alike, it is
important to recognize that the overwhelming majority of school shooters follow a basic equation of personality traits, behavioral patterns, and other
characteristics. It would be impossible to create a definitive list of characteristics that every single school shooter possesses, and researchers on... Show

The "psychotic" type had an intact family, but did suffer from or at least show symptoms of various psychological disorders or mental illnesses,
such as schizophrenia. Finally, the "psychopathic" type, who also came from an intact family, exhibited such behavior as narcissism and sadism and
lacked both empathy and a conscious (Langman, 2009). It is clear that although researchers do not always agree on how to explain the behavior of
school shooters, there are some fundamental traits that are very frequently included in their studies. When news of an active shooter situation hits the
media, word spreads quickly, especially when the event takes place at a school. Before long, expert psychologists, law enforcement personnel, and
even ordinary citizens begin to look into the shooter's personal life, attempting to find a piece of evidence that could help explain why they opened
fire. The incident that took place on October 24, 2014 at Marysville Pilchuck High School is no exception. Fifteen year old Jaylen Fryberg entered the
school cafeteria, took out a .40–caliber handgun, and began shooting at a table of his classmates (Carter, 2014). Four students would succumb to their
injuries, and another three were critically wounded. Fryberg also took his own life in the shooting ("Marysville Shooter Texted," 2015). If one were to
place Fryberg into the Leary et al. study, the results would be consistent with the previous

Understanding School Shootings
Understanding School Shootings There are a lot of school shootings happening in the U.S., today. These school shooters have problems, which they
need to be helped immediately. Schools need more security in order to prepare for these shootings. People never know or expect a person in their
school to start shooting a gun at innocent people. Throughout years, more and more shootings are occurring, we need to find out what causes these
tragic dilemmas in schools. Students need to help out other students, nevertheless, at least show respect to more students. I know that most school
shooters have something in common. "These commercially manufactured psychotic drugs (Prozac, Ritalin, Paxil, Luvox, etc.) are probably
triggering psychotic behavior in already unstable individuals, and this potential connection needs to be officially investigated immediately."
(Freydis, pg. 2) However, most school shootings happen in the first few hours of school, and males ages 13 to 20 are the most common school
shooters. What this means is they have a mental illness, although they can't control it all the time. They often dwell about their life. School shootings
occur within 6 months today; most shootings are with pistols, and the shooter ends up passing up his life in the end. (1b: SV; SV, and SV.) The
shooter is generally a loner, or he doesn't have many friends. This shows that he doesn't belong in his school, so he should probably try to go to a
different school to see if he can make

Rampage Shootings : The Social Roots Of School Shootings
Rampage–style school shootings are rare and tragic events. Although measures of prevention have become more advanced, school shootings have
increased in frequency over the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Here in the United States, they have become especially prevalent, with 63
shootings just this year (Acevedo). The aftermath of rampage shootings leaves gaping holes and questions in communities. People try to heal and seek
closure at their own pace, but the biggest question most are left with is "why"? In Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings, Katherine S.
Newman seeks to answer this question. She lays out her research and methodology for studying rampage shootings and comes to the conclusion that
shootings are not spontaneous, but rather the build up of psychological issues and negative sociological situations within a student's community that
causes them to seek to regain power over their own lives through a rampage shooting. The story Rampage builds out of the narratives of shooters and
their victims along with national data and trends is important because it highlights the places that our societies fail in providing a safety net for deviant
students and their peers. Newman begins her book by telling the stories of two different rampage shootings, at Heath High School and Westside Middle
School. Once she establishes the shooters and the subjects of her study, Newman lays out her thesis and explains that her research shows that many
factors contribute

Taking Aim at School Shootings
School violence, specifically school shootings, are a rising problem and concern that in some way affects every student, parent, and educator.
According to Lee (2013), since 2010 there have been 54 school shootings in the United States alone and that number continues to rise (p. 88). The
Macmillan Dictionary defines a school shooting as, "a violent act in which someone, usually a student, uses a gun to injure teachers, students, and staff"
(n.d.). Although these violent acts directly affect those closest to the problem such as students, educators, and parents, when a tragedy such as this
occurs, the entire nation is affected in some way. When an intense act of school violence happens, fear and panic are instilled ... Show more content on

Family environment is one cause that is only analyzed after the violent act has occurred. Most families will refuse to speak to media outlets or admit
truths to the police so no one can be completely sure of how the family acted behind closed doors. It is the classic argument of nature versus nurture
which research has put to rest, showing that both factors interact and is now a question of to what degree do these two factors interact to produce their
effects (Feldman, 2013, p. 293). It is too difficult to get concrete facts and study the environmental effect when dealing with a problem that interacts
with another in a way that cannot be measured. Family environment most likely has some sort of effect on the young person who commits this type of
crime, but because it cannot be concretely determined, it is a weak

Gun Control In School Shootings
Imagine the notion of being defenseless against an individual holding the purpose of wreaking mass devastation on the students and faculty inside of a
school. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut endured a tragedy that carries historical significance to the notion of
shielding those inside of a classroom in a worst–case situation. When twenty–six students had their life taken away during a school massacre, the
thought of permitting teachers to carry handguns during class drew more consideration than ever. The safety of the students inside of a school facility
may be in jeopardy as manifested in school shootings such as the ones which transpired at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Virginia Tech, where
thirty–two students and teachers lost their lives (History.com). While many feel that presenting teachers with handguns may prove harmful to safety
efforts, inflicting such standards would provide instructors and students equally with enhanced protection and overall security.
Imagine being in the family's shoes when hearing through media reports that their child was killed in a school shooting. If teachers had the option of
being equipped with the handguns, then that child (and the rest in the classroom) would have survived. How many more times are we going to
learn about a deranged gunman walking into a school loaded and ready to kill? How many more innocent children need to die before we wake up
and give our teachers the prospect to fight back? The only resolution is to grant our teachers a fighting chance. No shooter is going to target a
school that can protect itself and fight back. Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and anticipating for police to arrive isn't good
enough. Spartanburg County South Carolina Sheriff Chuck Wright says, "Our form of justice is not making it. Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix
it" (Miller, Fox News). Then there was Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. who lately created a nationwide uproar for advising citizens to
master how to manage firearms so they can protect themselves, because he says, "simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option"
(Handelman Fox 6 Wisconsin). What happens when the nearest police unit is 10

Essay On School Shootings
There have been many horror stories in the news about mass shootings at schools. The public, and even the president of the United States, is asking if
anything can be done to prevent these tragedies. There are many theories on why students kill their peers at schools; these range from increased
violence in video games and movies to bullying troubles at school. Almost always, the perpetrator suffers from some form of mental illness
(Khadaroo). Because of this, motives for these crimes are extremely difficult to discern. Although the theories for the causes of this dilemma are
tenuous at best, the effects are very perceptible. Can anything be done to prevent these massacres? School shootings are a complex problem that cannot

By investigating possible causes, schools can establish policies and programs to help prevent school massacres.
Whereas the causes of school violence are mostly theoretical, the effects of mass school shootings are stark and terrible. In the past twenty years there
have been many incidents, both small and large scale, of shooting in schools. Two of the most well known of these are the Columbine shooting in 1999
and the Sandy–Hook shooting in 2012. Twenty–six people were killed in the Sandy–Hook shooting and thirteen in the Columbine shooting ("School
Safety Timeline."). One boy described his experience at the Sandy–Hook shooting as, "I saw some of the bullets going past the hall that I was right next
to, and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom" ("What Happened in Newtown"). It is hard to imagine the terror and life–long effects that such an
incident would cause among children. These stories cause a fear in many students that makes it difficult to create an environment for learning. It is
obvious that something must be done to protect children of all ages in public school.
The first possible solution is to pass stringent gun control laws in order to remove the weapon from a perpetrator's hand. This seems to be a very
logical solution, but, when investigated more closely, it is not. Although few people are lobbying for complete gun prohibition, many want

Rampage : Social Roots Of School Shootings
Rampage: Social Roots of School Shootings The first chapter I read was number 7, Why Kids Don't Tell. This chapter focused on the reason why
kids don't tell people of authority when they hear of something that is "Suppose to happen". For the 3 shootings focused on in the chapter, there
were multiple people for each shooting that heard the shooters make threats of violence. The main question then is why didn't anybody report what
he or she heard? There were multiple reasons that all make logical sense. The first reason was that people didn't take the threats seriously and often
saw them as jokes or just brushed them off. It also was brought up that it was hard to validate threats because the people who talked about doing
something were often jokesters, so the kids who heard the claims of the shooters often brushed them off as jokes. In todays language kids always say
"oh I want to kill him" or "I want to hurt the", but most kids are all talk. When they say such things they were angry at the time and usually don't
follow through with the violence they say. Another reason kids don't tell is that they are afraid of the consequences. Kids abide by the Adolescent Code
and see adults as enemies. Kids fear that if they tell an adult, then the adult will talk to the child, but often not keep the person's identity who told a
secret, then they could be a potential target for the shooter. The thought of their identity not being confidential often steers them away for tattling.

highly dangerous because of the way that they are increasing and how they are making schools get more security, but now researchers are starting to

That was said on the idea and purpose of code red drills. These drills and procedures are helping, but even with the increased security, there were
around 50 school shootings in just 2015 alone (Code Red: Schools Prepare for the Worst with Shooter Drills). By studying the past shootings,
researchers have learned why teens and adults shoot up schools and how these shootings happen. Most of the shootings were attacks on someone
("215 School Shootings in America Since 2013"). That most likely means that the teen shooting up the school was bullied before and trying to shoot
the bully. Shooters also sometimes tell their peers their plan(Newman). If the peers are smart enough to know that bringing a gun to shoot up the
school then they should tell the principal or a teacher what their friend's plan is. They should tell even if they are scared about maybe losing the
friendship because saving a school is more important than keeping one friendship. When kids bring their gun(s) to school and pull the trigger it gives
them a sense of power(Devore 13). Kids are lonely and want comfort("School Shootings: Not about Guns, its about Loneliness"). Many people have
learned why school shootings happen, but the way the occurrences of school shootings is rising and the higher security that schools are having to get

Effects Of School Shootings
It is without a doubt that there has been an increase in violent crimes in schools throughout recent years. School shootings continue to become more
and more common, especially in North America. Safety concerns for any and all students and staff in schools are at all all time high due to the high
number of fatal and non–fatal occurring incidences. Since 2013 to the present, it is estimated that the United States has seen approximately 205
school shootings. Weekly, that is a shocking one shooting on average. Many of these shootings have resulted in the injuries and deaths of multiple of
students and staff members. (Everytown Research, 2017) Evidently, school shootings are tragic events that affect so many more people than just the
victims. However, these events are also interesting to look at from the psychological and sociological point of views. Through much research, it can
be concluded that school shootings are a complex problem that are caused by a mix of improper brain development and societal and media influences
which motivate school shooters to emerge. Psychological factors may include struggling with mental illnesses and/or abuse that leads to damaged brain
development. Additionally, being bullied and/or the role of the media are examples of sociological factors.
Society plays a big role in the development of a school shooter. When an individual feels isolated or excluded from a community and is a target for
bullies, it often causes them to take out that repressed anger and lash out in heinous ways. Nowadays, students are typically at school five days a week
for six to seven hours a day. That is a lot of time spent with classmates, and unfortunately, bullies.Bullying usually involves an imbalance of power, in
which the bully hopes to establish a feeling of dominance over their victim. (Bullying, 2017) Being the victim of bullying is certainly an emotionally
damaging situation, especially when one feels helpless and alone. Anger or discontent from the victim may develop into something deeper like hatred
and the need for revenge, which is the reason why some individuals turn to shooting schools– to finally hurt others instead of being the one getting hurt.

The Academy for Critical Incident Analysis at John Jay College of Criminal Justice researched and found that the U.S. had nearly as many deaths by

instigated by males. (Robertz, Frank J) Research says that school shooters are mostly men who are motivated by violent psychological issues,
disruption in families, and childhood torment.

withdrew him from school and placed him in homeschool for kids who are "too disabled" to attend school. Adam Lanza returned to school for a
short period of time during tenth grade, but was withdrawn again after. He finished high school by taking classes at a local college, but matters
only got worse after he graduated in 2009. He went out less and less and eventually refused to leave his room. He would cover his windows with
black garbage bags and communicated with his mother via email. After his parent's divorce, he stopped replying to his father's emails between 2010

Guns in the Classroom
131 people have died in mass school shootings since 1999 to 2015 (Le Miere). This excludes any shootings that have resulted with 4 or less fatalities
because they are not considered mass shootings. However, these tragic events can be prevented or stopped faster if a trained adult had presented a
firearm. I believe that if a teacher would like to have a firearm in their classroom to help prevent any fatalities from possible school shootings they
should be allowed. Many people oppose the concept of guns in the classroom, but a compromise can be found between the two sides of the continuum.
These compromisation can be applied to the classroom to help stop school shootings and make sure school shootings don't occur.
Many people oppose the concept of their being a gun in the classroom. These people who oppose it are a genuine part of the application process for
this policy to be applied and their opinions and worries need to be heard. However not every need can be met most can and both sides can come to a
compromise. The teacher not being able to handle the firearm or react in a dangerous situation is a big worry for many people. "Most people would
not have the nerve, rational thought, or skill to do it on the spot. Providing stop–gap "training" would not address the whole picture. You would be

The Importance Of School Shootings

  • 1. The Importance Of School Shootings It is a lot of school shooting that has been happing from generations to generation. School shooting happen across the world, but it mainly happing in the United States of America. We as teacher and parents never know why students kill or shoot themselves and others in the school. This essay will talk about reason why students do these crazy school shootings and how we can create better schooling for our future children, so they will not go on a ram page and kill innocent people. The book I will be highlighting the book, "The Bully Society" by Jessie Klein. On December 1, 1997, Micheal Carneal rode to school with his sister and brought two shot guns, two rifles, and a .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol. When his sister dropped him off,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their masculinity to be tested by anyone. They go and prove that their tough and they prove that by going on a whelm page and shooting the whole school up. This paragraph came from the chapter two, "Masculinity and White Supremacy". In October 1997, Luke Woodham was at his home in the morning. He beat and stapped his mother to death. He had hidden a gun under his coat and made his way to his high school in Pearl, Mississippi where he killed two students and severally wounded seven others. The main target was his ex–girlfriend named Christina Menetce. He said that he did intend on shooting her and did not know why he shot the others. When he was in the confessional he pointed out that his mother never loved him. He also stated that she would say very horrible things like he would never amount to nothing in life. They real reason he shot up the school was mainly because of the ex–girlfriend. The ex would flirt with other guys right in front of Luke face. She would also mention to Luke how other guys were cute. When they broke up he was very devastated. He did not eat nor sleep and did not want to live without her. He wanted to show her that he was more stronger and more superior to her. I feel like he wanted all the women to feel like he ws in superior. He describes that he was one moment some kind of weak idiot and in second felt in power over many things but most importantly woman. Crime statics states that boys under eighteen committed a ... • 2. School Shooting Analysis ''The more they identify with the characteristics of the story, the more it will increase their level of risk,'' said J. Kevin Cameron, director of the Canadian Center for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response, who has consulted on school shootings in the United States. The media is an accomplice to mass shooting because of them naming and describing all the aspects of the crime that was committed. The news stations describe these crimes in details saying exactly what the perpetrator needs to hear to commit a crime just like it. They name the shooter, they describe his characteristics, they detail the crime, they number the victims, and they rank him against other successful attackers. ''The more they identify with the characteristics of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Katherine Newman, provost of the University of Massachusetts Amherst and co–author of "Rampage: The Social Roots of School Shootings," said media coverage may prompt copycat crimes, but shining the national spotlight on mass and school shootings can have benefits, too. It encourages students and adults to come forward with information about suspicious people (Smart, 2015). We need to understand why these people commit these crimes in order to stop these crimes from happening. Even if the people panic from these stories being on the news it is good to know that these things could happen. People also think that children in school should know that something that this, even though it is rare, could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. School Shootings In the society we live in today, it is hard to go for a long period of time without hearing of or about a type of disaster which has occurred that could have been prevented. The worst kind of disasters to hear or learn about consist of the disasters in which a school has been involved. With the increasing in security at schools to prevent fatal disasters, many questions have started to rise with concerns about whether or not if the amount of security necessary. In other words, does the amount of security in schools help prevent more disasters, or does the opposition out way the deposition? The amount of security in schools does impact the prevention of fatal disasters. To fully understand the answer, one must first look into the background of the perpetrators, and find the whys. The number one reason people commit such horrendous crimes are that they were victims of bullying. Most people are bullied because they may be different from the ... Same of the key characteristics that lead to school shootings are: the number of kids enrolled in the school, urban or suburban location, and public funding (DE). A current study examined many key characteristics of all schools in which random (38) and targeted (96) fatal shootings occurred within the United States between 1966 and 2009. These were compared with a group (138) of schools randomly selected to represent the population of all schools in the United States. In past shootings the perpetrator or perpetrators had been or were associated with the school (DE). It was not as if a man from California came to a random school in West Virginia and shot at random. All past school shooting was preventable in that they were all premeditated crimes. People could have been more aware of the behavior of the perpetrators. • 4. School Violence : Causes Of School Shootings School violence is the act that threatens and alters the school environment with harmful consequences on students and educators' wellbeing and impact students in a negative way (Reininghaus, Castro, & Frisancho, 2013). It is obvious now than ever that we lives in a world where the safety and security of individuals are in question, especially that of school students where safety against school shootings remain everyone's major concern. The terror of Virginia Tech mass murder in 2007 and Sandy Hook ElementarySchool shooting in 2012 traumatized the nation. As of the time when Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting took place, the massacre was considered the second–deadliest school shooting in the United States when Adam Lanza, a Twenty–year–old carried armory of hundreds of rounds of deadly ammo, that was enough to kill nearly every students in the school (Lee, 2013). Thus, the causes of this growing problem of school violence are: Bullying, psychiatric drugs and access to weapon. Bullying is a huge cause of school violence, traditional school bulling can take place on school play ground, school bus or hall way while as a result of technological advancement, cyber bullying has become 'borderless cancer' that sometimes turn the school environment into killing zone. Both cyber and traditional bullying inflicts physical hurt and sometimes physiological suffering on one or more students. Therefore, according to Bartol & Bartol (2014) victims of persistence bullying are more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. School Shootings A school shooting occurred on February 14, 2018. The shooter is 19–year–old Nikolas Cruz. Cruz had planned this for a while. He slipped into the school carrying a rifle case, pulled a fire alarm, waited for students to leave there classrooms then shot up the school. After which, when the students were being evacuated, he proceed to leave behind other students to be unnoticed. Cruz killed 17 students and adults, and wounded 14 others. I believe the school shooting could've been preventable. Through the years of 2008–2017, there were 18 warning calls all about Cruz's actions about school shootings. Also Cruz had some very disturbing post on social media. Including one stating, "I'm going to become a professional school shooter". No actions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Stop School Shootings School shootings have become a major problem not only in South Carolina, but in the United States. School shootings have shockingly become more likely now than ever. A recent report showed that over 230 school shootings have arose since 2013, meaning that there has been at least 1 school shooting per week for the last 4 years. Once students experience these traumatic happenings, the district as a whole receives lower standardized test scores, lessened student enrollment and even frightened parents. Parents begin to lose faith in the school system and no longer find comfort in sending their child to and from that school. By definition, school shootings are anytime a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or school grounds. This connection question's objective to read about a specific school shooting, it stood out to me that every child has a motive for the school shooting – whether big or small. Therefore, I have conducted research to find out why and how to stop school violence. In my opinion, teachers most certainly should be able to identify and designate those who appear to carry out school shootings. Being a teacher puts you in a front row seat to critique and evaluate signs that may not be shown to parents. Teachers should be able to identify children who seem hopeless, distracted, or are even victims of bullying to get them the necessary help that they deserve. I also feel as though being at school brings out a different side ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Pros And Cons Of School Shootings School shootings are terrifying and a big problem in today's society. Schools have added lockdown drills, bullet proof glass and metal detectors. School should be a safe area for children to learn instead of fearing for their life. Instead of buying metal detectors and hiring more officers, there is a much easier solution in order to decrease and prevent school shootings. We have to be more alert about securing weapons at home and being aware of suspicious behavior at school in order to keep children and faculty safe. As a child left for school one morning, his parents thought that he had been acting very odd and different. Even with their suspicion, they said goodbye and let their son go to school. It wasn't till later when they had noticed an empty spot in their gun case where a pistol and shotgun used to sit. They rushed to the school and while searching through the halls for their son, their ears echoed with a gunshot from one of the classrooms. Following the gunshot, they rushed into the classroom and immediately disarmed and physically detained their son until police arrived. The only damages the son had caused, was a plate–sized hole in the ceiling. If the parents had gotten to the school even one minute later, their son could have been labeled as a murderer. It is sickening to know that a child was able to sneak past his parents, teachers, and students with two firearms on his body. His parents were lucky they arrived when they did because many of people could have been hurt or even worse murdered. Obviously, the child that brought the two firearms to school should be the one punished, but what about the parents. The parents that did not have a weapon that could easily end someone's life, properly locked up or hidden away. If parents are going to carelessly leave firearms unlocked with ammo nearby, what is stopping a child from doing wrong with that firearm? Leaving firearms unlocked with any aged child around, hoping they don't touch it is a dangerous and irresponsible act. When school shootings occur, the individual that brings the weapon to school should be the one punished. However, when the parents irresponsibly leave a firearm unlocked they should face a punishment as well. "68% of school ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Mass Shooting In Schools Mass shootings have become one of the most fearful events that could happen in elementary schools, high schools, and College campuses. These violent actions committed by a number of individuals have happened for many years and will continue happening unless prevented. Individuals like James Holmes opened fire in a Colorado movie theater, killing twelve individuals and injuring twenty, John Sawahri shot five students dead in Santa Monica College also injuring four individuals. However Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold executed the most horrific act of school violence in United States History. These two individuals managed to take the lives of twelve students, a teacher and managed to take their own life in the process. This act of crime has spread through America, leaving no one safe. These crimes have occurred not too long ago and can easily happen in the future. As a community, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No one just wakes up one day to realize they became a criminal; this process generally takes a long and slow build. Guns opened to those who really should not have them can be seen as one of the main reasons as to why mass shootings exist all around America. Investigators should find a way to keep these killing machines away from those who should not have them. Living with a abusive family and not getting any attention when a person needs it the most can also cause one to build hate towards others. Always entertained by violent movies and video games will cause a child's brain to think that the world mirrors the violence they obtain from these games and movies. What happens in the games can also happen in the real world, especially when violent games are involved. Searching for revenge or simply seeking for attention are also reasons to mass shootings. All of this buildup in an individual's life can cause a child to grow up into having a mind of a criminal. However, solutions to stop this from occurring are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Parents' Role in School Shootings Essay When children commit a horrible act such as a school shooting their parents often look for someone or something to blame rather than looking at what role they, as parents, may have had in the tragedy. The often targeted entertainers, video game developers, teachers, drug companies, and writers are rarely, if ever, responsible for such tragic outcomes and, unfortunately, often become victims as a result of lawsuits filed in an attempt to place blame on them. The parents of dangerous children must be scrutinized and sued alongside every other entity being blamed for the heinous crimes that children commit. When 2 young men, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree in Littleton, Colorado, killing 15 people, including ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the 1999 Columbine tragedy, there was the 14–year–old boy in Paducah, Kentucky who, in 1997, went on a shooting spree at his local school. Parents of 3 of the shooting victims filed lawsuits against 25 media companies seeking $130 million in damages, citing that the shooter, Michael Carneal, learned how to shoot a gun by playing video and computer games. The lawsuits further implied that violent movies and internet pornography were to blame for the boy's behavior (Holmstrom, par. 6). In both the Columbine and the Paducah, Kentucky cases the parents of the shooters were sued on the grounds that they should have known, and prevented, the tragedies from occurring. According to an article written by Mark Walsh regarding the Paducah shooting, a state–law negligence suit "named 45 defendants, including McCracken County...teachers...who allegedly failed to interpret "warning signals" [referring to a paper that Carneal had written depicting a fictitious school shooting] that 14–year–old Michael Carneal would go on a murderous rampage" (Walsh, par. 4). The case against the employees of the McCracken County School District was dismissed by Judge William Shadoan, citing, "We cannot expect those teachers and administrators to be psychiatrists, lawyers, psychologists, or physicians" (Walsh, par. 15). These school employees should have never been put in the position to have to defend themselves against such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Hazelwood School Shootings The Hazelwood School District in Hazelwood, Missouri was one of the districts affected by the events that were happening in Ferguson, Missouri with the deathly shooting of Michael Brown. Hazelwood West High School Special Education Teacher Jodi Schutzenhofer was one of those teachers that found it difficult to try and find an equal balance and understanding of how students within the school were dealing with the grand jury decision. "I did not really have any types of group discussions with my students, but I had several questions like, 'what happens now?' and 'why did they have to burn down the city?' for which there is really no good answer. But what happens when media is stricken with negative news? How do they go about portraying that negative information without putting their viewers into a worldwide panic? Or is that even their job? With the Ferguson crisis that was currently happening at this point in time, the media played an important role, as they were the ones who were informing media watchers and viewers about what was happening. But many were debating whether or not the news stations did and effective job when reporting to the community about Ferguson. With headline such as, "Officer shoots unarmed teen," and "Police Brutality at its Finest," the media was one of the first places that people went to look for more information regarding Michael Brown. • 11. School Shootings : The Crisis Of School Shootings The effort of this paper is designed to provide an audience with the basic framework in preventing, reacting to, and recovering from a school shooting. By analyzing the crisis of a school shooting, this paper will lay out the practical steps in preparing schools, communities, and local agencies for a tragedy that has already shook many communities across the nation. This paper will also follow the steps necessary to implement and evaluate a school shooting preparedness plan. In concluding this paper, school staff, local agencies, and families will be able to take the practical steps towards providing a safe and comfortable learning environment for students. The Crisis at Hand Over the past couple of decades, school shooting have seemed to occur often–– continuously shocking the nation and reminding everyone that no community is exempt from such horror. One main contributor of this hysteria is found within the media. At the catalyst of this hysteria, lies the horrific Columbine shooting in 1999. Since then, school shootings have received ample coverage–– some argue that this has romanticized school shootings, others argue that is has provided condemning coverage of the often insane perpetrators. In the first year after the Columbine shooting, over 10,000 articles were written about the event, likely setting the stage for the nationwide desire for constant coverage of such events (Elsass et al, p. 445–446). Nevertheless, school shootings still offer a new risk that requires ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting, 1989 Some refer to it as The Slaughter in a School Yard, The Stockton Massacre, and others as The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting. Something as horrifying as someone shooting down innocent children playing at recesses on school grounds was never expected here in the United States of America. Although there was past cases of school shootings, this was the first shooting to be televised on national television of its magnitude (Taining, P et al., 2014). A mass murderer is defined as someone who slaughters many people at one time. This particular incident unfortunately was not the slaughter of people, but it was children. It happened around 11:40 AM on January 17th, 1989 in Stockton, California. A man by the name of Patrick Edward Purdy opened fire on children ages six through nine playing at recess on school grounds of Cleveland Elementary School. This tragic case brought questions to people everywhere in our nation as to why it was so easy for a mentally unstable individual such as Patrick Purdy to enter a gun store and purchase a semiautomatic weapon ("Slaughter in a," 2001). Patrick Edward Purdy was born November 10, 1964 in Fort Lewis Washington. His parents divorced at age two. He is described as an adolescent as quiet but unable to cope with anything. He had a troubled relationship with his mother and was made to leave his mother's home after an altercation between the two resulting in him hitting her. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is great that some people want to come together and help the problem. School shootings are a huge problem and something needs to be done quick. It's impossible to know how many instances could be prevented if the perpetrators were led to Christ and given much needed hope in their young lives. At some point in a shooters life, something went downhill, and it led to them feeling negatively about themselves and their classmates. There is an array of reasons for this, but the main three discussed in this case study are bullying, isolation, and a strong need to "strike back." Since everyone is from completely different backgrounds, there is no way to figure out all the reasons for why they do it. According to Katherine S. Newman, there are five things that all school shooters have in common. At some point in their life, they were seen as different in some way, shape, or form. All shooters also suffer from some sort of depression. Because of the depression, they look to be problem solvers. They want to be known and get the glamour and street credit. They crave the power, status, and history. They feel as if the glorious feeling of death will cure the quiet, dark, and alone side that they have. The shooter also broadcasts their intentions and the attacks are never spontaneous. By giving little hints, they try to gain friends and keep the ones they have safe. They all want to have social status or revenge on a group that does not want them. (Newman). Although these reasons all make sense, it is such a broad spectrum of ideas and characteristics. There is no way of knowing the motive for a persons actions, especially if it is not being looked for or talked about. For example, bullying is a risk factor for school shootings. In a research study done in 2001 of 37 school shootings, it was reported that 75% of the school shooters felt bullied, threatened, or injured by others in which most of the shooters in the report had experienced long–term bullying and harassment from their peers (Duplechain & Morris, 2014). In addition, the authors do state: "School personnel too often accept that children get teased and bullied every day, because teachers, parents, students, and other adults have grown up thinking that bullying is a normal part of school life. It has easily become an accepted part of today's school culture" (Ibid, 2014). The authors believe that schools view bullying as something that students should get used to. This does show how bullying is an issue in schools. It is not solely to blame in regards to school shootings, but is a risk factor for them. Relationships and past traumas are risk factors for school shootings (Duplechain & Morris, 2014). The author states in regards to relationships and school shootings "The lack of attachment with their parents or caregivers at the beginning of their life to some of the school shooters. • 20. Crosby, Stills And School Shootings School shootings are something that we as American have unfortunately become numb to. Every time another one occurs, we all pause and think about how terrible it is that someone would get to the point mentally where they would open fire on students, and then we move on. Perhaps no school shooting shook the world quite as much as the Kent State shooting did, when the National Guard, thus the government itself, opened fire and killed four college students. In the wake of this tragedy, Neil Young came together with fellow musicians David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash to write and perform the song titled simply Ohio. This song, along with other war protest songs of the time, relayed the raw emotions felt in the wartime atmosphere and helped to shape and encourage public opinion of the Vietnam War. Crosby, Stills, and Nash came together as a music group in 1969, and later recruited Young to join. That year, the group played at the famed Woodstock festival, and in 1970 released their album DГ©jГ Vu, which would become known as one of the greatest albums of the early 1970s. Some of the most well–known and best–loved songs on this album were Carry On, 4+20, Helpless, Country Girl, and Teach Your Children, featuring Jerry Garcia on steel guitar. • 26. The Consequences Of School Shootings After written by Francine Prose is a dystopian novel about a nearby school shooting and the attempts to become a safer program and school to gain the result that students feel safer while gaining their education. Following the school shooting, a large amount of safety measurements and guidelines are enforced to prevent it from happening at Central High School. In 2013, Everytown which is a gun safety organization began tracking gunfire in schools and at college and universities – public reports that a firearm was discharged inside a school building or on school or campus grounds – and over the next three years identified 160 qualifying incidents. (Everytown) This is evidence which shows that this is still a social issue today. Not only is this social issue turned into a dystopian novel, but is also depicted in our real world society today as you can see the measures. A social relation to this can also be 9/11. If you have ever been on a plane dating back before September 11th, 2001 you would know that security and customs weren't as dramatic and as much as an uphold until the attack occurred. Since the attack many security policies were put into force and immediately there was a change to eliminate this problem from occurring again. Just like the book After the school started enforcing policies and guidelines to ensure this doesn't happen again. In the US, school shootings aren't something that is rare, unfortunately, they happen quite often. Due to the violence the school must enforce rules that may seem bezerk, in the book rules began to be enforced, for example, the students were no longer able to wear the color red because the shooters at the school wore the color red. A societal comparison can be the dress codes enforced in schools today to eliminate gang alliance, violence, and risky behavior. In the novel, Francine Prose uses a good choice of diction while developing the tone of the story. When frightening conflicts happen nearby it tends to affect the individuals involved or closely surrounded by the event for a period of time. Other school shooting have occurred since then and it brought up the issue of gun control, some politicians even supported the idea of giving teachers guns to have in the classroom. I am against allowing teachers to have guns in the classroom in the name of protection and security. What is your initial point of view? My initial point of view is adding more guns to a hostile situation by giving teachers guns does not solve schools security issues in trying to keep children safe. Spending valuable money should not go into training teachers on how to use a gun, it should go into educating all staff members and students on emergency drills and lock downs in case of a school shooting. Even upgrading security systems would be more helpful in a hostile situation rather than depending on one person killing another to save everyone. How can you define your point of view more clearly? I can define my point of view more clearly by asking questions that maybe many people have not wanted to ask for the fear of receiving a selfish answer. People never know or expect a person in their school to start shooting a gun at innocent people. Throughout years, more and more shootings are occurring, we need to find out what causes these tragic dilemmas in schools. Students need to help out other students, nevertheless, at least show respect to more students. I know that most school shooters have something in common. "These commercially manufactured psychotic drugs (Prozac, Ritalin, Paxil, Luvox, etc.) are probably triggering psychotic behavior in already unstable individuals, and this potential connection needs to be officially investigated immediately." (Freydis, pg. 2) However, most school shootings happen in the first few hours of school, and males ages 13 to 20 are the most common school shooters. What this means is they have a mental illness, although they can't control it all the time. They often dwell about their life. School shootings occur within 6 months today; most shootings are with pistols, and the shooter ends up passing up his life in the end. (1b: SV; SV, and SV.) She lays out her research and methodology for studying rampage shootings and comes to the conclusion that shootings are not spontaneous, but rather the build up of psychological issues and negative sociological situations within a student's community that causes them to seek to regain power over their own lives through a rampage shooting. The story Rampage builds out of the narratives of shooters and their victims along with national data and trends is important because it highlights the places that our societies fail in providing a safety net for deviant students and their peers. Newman begins her book by telling the stories of two different rampage shootings, at Heath High School and Westside Middle School. Once she establishes the shooters and the subjects of her study, Newman lays out her thesis and explains that her research shows that many factors contribute ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. School Shootings Taking Aim at School Shootings School violence, specifically school shootings, are a rising problem and concern that in some way affects every student, parent, and educator. According to Lee (2013), since 2010 there have been 54 school shootings in the United States alone and that number continues to rise (p. 88). The Macmillan Dictionary defines a school shooting as, "a violent act in which someone, usually a student, uses a gun to injure teachers, students, and staff" (n.d.). Although these violent acts directly affect those closest to the problem such as students, educators, and parents, when a tragedy such as this occurs, the entire nation is affected in some way. When an intense act of school violence happens, fear and panic are instilled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Family environment is one cause that is only analyzed after the violent act has occurred. Most families will refuse to speak to media outlets or admit truths to the police so no one can be completely sure of how the family acted behind closed doors. It is the classic argument of nature versus nurture which research has put to rest, showing that both factors interact and is now a question of to what degree do these two factors interact to produce their effects (Feldman, 2013, p. 293). It is too difficult to get concrete facts and study the environmental effect when dealing with a problem that interacts with another in a way that cannot be measured. Family environment most likely has some sort of effect on the young person who commits this type of crime, but because it cannot be concretely determined, it is a weak ... • 32. Gun Control In School Shootings Imagine the notion of being defenseless against an individual holding the purpose of wreaking mass devastation on the students and faculty inside of a school. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut endured a tragedy that carries historical significance to the notion of shielding those inside of a classroom in a worst–case situation. When twenty–six students had their life taken away during a school massacre, the thought of permitting teachers to carry handguns during class drew more consideration than ever. The safety of the students inside of a school facility may be in jeopardy as manifested in school shootings such as the ones which transpired at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Virginia Tech, where thirty–two students and teachers lost their lives (History.com). While many feel that presenting teachers with handguns may prove harmful to safety efforts, inflicting such standards would provide instructors and students equally with enhanced protection and overall security. Imagine being in the family's shoes when hearing through media reports that their child was killed in a school shooting. If teachers had the option of being equipped with the handguns, then that child (and the rest in the classroom) would have survived. How many more times are we going to learn about a deranged gunman walking into a school loaded and ready to kill? How many more innocent children need to die before we wake up and give our teachers the prospect to fight back? The only resolution is to grant our teachers a fighting chance. No shooter is going to target a school that can protect itself and fight back. Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and anticipating for police to arrive isn't good enough. Spartanburg County South Carolina Sheriff Chuck Wright says, "Our form of justice is not making it. Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it" (Miller, Fox News). Then there was Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. who lately created a nationwide uproar for advising citizens to master how to manage firearms so they can protect themselves, because he says, "simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option" (Handelman Fox 6 Wisconsin). What happens when the nearest police unit is 10 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Essay On School Shootings There have been many horror stories in the news about mass shootings at schools. The public, and even the president of the United States, is asking if anything can be done to prevent these tragedies. There are many theories on why students kill their peers at schools; these range from increased violence in video games and movies to bullying troubles at school. Almost always, the perpetrator suffers from some form of mental illness (Khadaroo). Because of this, motives for these crimes are extremely difficult to discern. Although the theories for the causes of this dilemma are tenuous at best, the effects are very perceptible. Can anything be done to prevent these massacres? School shootings are a complex problem that cannot always... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By investigating possible causes, schools can establish policies and programs to help prevent school massacres. Whereas the causes of school violence are mostly theoretical, the effects of mass school shootings are stark and terrible. In the past twenty years there have been many incidents, both small and large scale, of shooting in schools. Two of the most well known of these are the Columbine shooting in 1999 and the Sandy–Hook shooting in 2012. Twenty–six people were killed in the Sandy–Hook shooting and thirteen in the Columbine shooting ("School Safety Timeline."). One boy described his experience at the Sandy–Hook shooting as, "I saw some of the bullets going past the hall that I was right next to, and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom" ("What Happened in Newtown"). It is hard to imagine the terror and life–long effects that such an incident would cause among children. These stories cause a fear in many students that makes it difficult to create an environment for learning. It is obvious that something must be done to protect children of all ages in public school. The first possible solution is to pass stringent gun control laws in order to remove the weapon from a perpetrator's hand. This seems to be a very logical solution, but, when investigated more closely, it is not. Although few people are lobbying for complete gun prohibition, many want ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Rampage : Social Roots Of School Shootings Rampage: Social Roots of School Shootings The first chapter I read was number 7, Why Kids Don't Tell. This chapter focused on the reason why kids don't tell people of authority when they hear of something that is "Suppose to happen". For the 3 shootings focused on in the chapter, there were multiple people for each shooting that heard the shooters make threats of violence. The main question then is why didn't anybody report what he or she heard? There were multiple reasons that all make logical sense. The first reason was that people didn't take the threats seriously and often saw them as jokes or just brushed them off. It also was brought up that it was hard to validate threats because the people who talked about doing something were often jokesters, so the kids who heard the claims of the shooters often brushed them off as jokes. In todays language kids always say "oh I want to kill him" or "I want to hurt the", but most kids are all talk. When they say such things they were angry at the time and usually don't follow through with the violence they say. Another reason kids don't tell is that they are afraid of the consequences. Kids abide by the Adolescent Code and see adults as enemies. Kids fear that if they tell an adult, then the adult will talk to the child, but often not keep the person's identity who told a secret, then they could be a potential target for the shooter. The thought of their identity not being confidential often steers them away for tattling. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Dangers Of School Shootings The Dangers of School Shootings Teens these days suffer through a lot sometimes and this leads to them doing dangerous things like shooting up schools. School shootings have affected the school's attendance and test scores around where past shootings have happened(215 School Shootings in America Since 2013). They could happen at any time and at any school depending on if kids bring their gun(s) to school or not. School shootings are highly dangerous because of the way that they are increasing and how they are making schools get more security, but now researchers are starting to see why school shootings are happening. The number of school shootings is increasing every day. Since 2013 there have been over 200 school shootings in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That was said on the idea and purpose of code red drills. These drills and procedures are helping, but even with the increased security, there were around 50 school shootings in just 2015 alone (Code Red: Schools Prepare for the Worst with Shooter Drills). By studying the past shootings, researchers have learned why teens and adults shoot up schools and how these shootings happen. Most of the shootings were attacks on someone ("215 School Shootings in America Since 2013"). That most likely means that the teen shooting up the school was bullied before and trying to shoot the bully. Shooters also sometimes tell their peers their plan(Newman). If the peers are smart enough to know that bringing a gun to shoot up the school then they should tell the principal or a teacher what their friend's plan is. They should tell even if they are scared about maybe losing the friendship because saving a school is more important than keeping one friendship. When kids bring their gun(s) to school and pull the trigger it gives them a sense of power(Devore 13). Kids are lonely and want comfort("School Shootings: Not about Guns, its about Loneliness"). Many people have learned why school shootings happen, but the way the occurrences of school shootings is rising and the higher security that schools are having to get are ways that show that school shootings are ... • 36. Effects Of School Shootings It is without a doubt that there has been an increase in violent crimes in schools throughout recent years. School shootings continue to become more and more common, especially in North America. Safety concerns for any and all students and staff in schools are at all all time high due to the high number of fatal and non–fatal occurring incidences. Since 2013 to the present, it is estimated that the United States has seen approximately 205 school shootings. Weekly, that is a shocking one shooting on average. Many of these shootings have resulted in the injuries and deaths of multiple of students and staff members. (Everytown Research, 2017) Evidently, school shootings are tragic events that affect so many more people than just the victims. However, these events are also interesting to look at from the psychological and sociological point of views. Through much research, it can be concluded that school shootings are a complex problem that are caused by a mix of improper brain development and societal and media influences which motivate school shooters to emerge. Psychological factors may include struggling with mental illnesses and/or abuse that leads to damaged brain development. Additionally, being bullied and/or the role of the media are examples of sociological factors. Society plays a big role in the development of a school shooter. When an individual feels isolated or excluded from a community and is a target for bullies, it often causes them to take out that repressed anger and lash out in heinous ways. Nowadays, students are typically at school five days a week for six to seven hours a day. That is a lot of time spent with classmates, and unfortunately, bullies.Bullying usually involves an imbalance of power, in which the bully hopes to establish a feeling of dominance over their victim. (Bullying, 2017) Being the victim of bullying is certainly an emotionally damaging situation, especially when one feels helpless and alone. Anger or discontent from the victim may develop into something deeper like hatred and the need for revenge, which is the reason why some individuals turn to shooting schools– to finally hurt others instead of being the one getting hurt. One horrifying example of bullying taking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. School Shootings The Academy for Critical Incident Analysis at John Jay College of Criminal Justice researched and found that the U.S. had nearly as many deaths by school shootings as 37 other countries combined. (America's Long) Out of the 101 school shootings that have occurred worldwide since 1974, 97 were instigated by males. (Robertz, Frank J) Research says that school shooters are mostly men who are motivated by violent psychological issues, disruption in families, and childhood torment. Initially, men with psychological issues are likely to precipitate violent acts within a community. For example, the shooter of Sandy Hook Elementary School, Adam Lanza, reportedly had childhood developmental issues. He was diagnosed with severe anxiety that caused him ... In eighth grade his mother, Nancy Lanza, withdrew him from school and placed him in homeschool for kids who are "too disabled" to attend school. Adam Lanza returned to school for a short period of time during tenth grade, but was withdrawn again after. He finished high school by taking classes at a local college, but matters only got worse after he graduated in 2009. He went out less and less and eventually refused to leave his room. He would cover his windows with black garbage bags and communicated with his mother via email. After his parent's divorce, he stopped replying to his father's emails between 2010 and 2012. Depression hit him very hard and he wasn't receiving the help he really needed. "At the time of his death, the chief medical examiner deemed him anorexic, "to the point of malnutrition and resultant brain damage". He was six feet tall but weighed only 112 pounds." • 38. School Shooting Narrative April 20, 1999, the date then will always leave a horrifying mental scar, this was possibly the worst day any kid could ever imagine. I was in tenth grade at the time and just like every other day I was acting up and talking to my friends. In third period around 11:20 A.M. an announcement comes over the loudspeakers blaring the message, "lockdown, lockdown, this is not a drill." I panicked as well as most of the school did, I heard girls scream in fright and everyone rushing to get into a classroom. I had no idea what was going on at the time until I heard gunshots from two different guns and explosions scattering the school halls. I was scared for not only my life but all other students and teachers of Columbine High School. The room I was in had access to the school cameras and I quickly identified the shooters as Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris both seventeen year old seniors. All I ever knew about these two was not to mess with them and that they both seemed a little wrong in the head. I altered my attention away from the camera footage in fear ... • 39. School Shootings Guns in the Classroom 131 people have died in mass school shootings since 1999 to 2015 (Le Miere). This excludes any shootings that have resulted with 4 or less fatalities because they are not considered mass shootings. However, these tragic events can be prevented or stopped faster if a trained adult had presented a firearm. I believe that if a teacher would like to have a firearm in their classroom to help prevent any fatalities from possible school shootings they should be allowed. Many people oppose the concept of guns in the classroom, but a compromise can be found between the two sides of the continuum. These compromisation can be applied to the classroom to help stop school shootings and make sure school shootings don't occur. Many people oppose the concept of their being a gun in the classroom. These people who oppose it are a genuine part of the application process for this policy to be applied and their opinions and worries need to be heard. However not every need can be met most can and both sides can come to a compromise. The teacher not being able to handle the firearm or react in a dangerous situation is a big worry for many people. "Most people would not have the nerve, rational thought, or skill to do it on the spot. Providing stop–gap "training" would not address the whole picture. You would be taking people who were trained to educate–many of whom had most likely never owned or even fired a gun–and transforming them into the appointed defenders of ...
