2. Topic
The topic of our documentary is baking because it has become a very popular
hobby in recent years, especially with young people because of The Great British
Bake Off, we will talk about both savoury and sweet baking as we want to include
both types in our documentary. We will conduct interviews with all different types
of people and explore what they like to bake. We will also talk to companies such
as waterfields and bents to find out their outlook on baking. Will we look at the
price of baking, the type of people that like to bake as a hobby.
3. Type of documentary
Our documentary is a mixed documentary. This means that it will include
interviews, achieve materials, observation footage and narration.
Our interviews will be conducted with: the public, bents employees, young and old
bakers and in waterfields.
Our observation footage will be off people baking and eating cakes, we will also
take shots of shop fronts and
The archive material we will use is a clip from the Great British Bake Off, we will
also show baker's blogs in our documentary.
We will also use a narrator in our documentary to link the documentary together.
4. Style of documentary
Our documentary will be informal as the topic is not very serious so this style of
documentary will match our topic well and it is catered for families as well as our
target audience.
It will be family friendly (by having appropriate language and not making it too
formal) as it focuses on all different age groups also because of the time we are
putting our documentary on it will be appropriate for all ages.
5. Channel and scheduling:
We have chosen to put our programme on channel 4, we have chosen this as
channel 4 is very popular for documentaries, this mean that we are more likely to
get a large audience.
We are going to show our documentary at 8.30- 9.00pm and a Tuesday.
We will use the strategy of inheritance when schedule our programme, this means
we will put our programme on after a very popular programme in hopes of
inheriting their audience. Secret life of 4 year olds is in before our programme and
we will inherit their audience.
6. Target audience
The target audience for our documentary is male and females aged between 30
and 70 as these ages of people generally who start baking whether it be for
business or just a hobby as found in our questionnaire. They love baking as either
a hobby or profession and have a family, they like watching baking programmes
and bake around once a month. This means that we must interview people of
these ages as then we can show the opinions of the targeted audience for the
documentary as the audience will be interested in the opinions of their own age
and people near their ages so that they can compare their opinions to the opinions
of the interviewees.
Also we have chosen to target these ages for our documentary as people of
younger ages are not prone to watching documentaries and not if they aren't what
they are interested in so we decided to aim our documentary at the audiences that
will be most interested in the documentary and the topics that it talks about.
7. Primary research needed
The primary research that we have done is through a questionnaire as
we asked these questions to find out more about what our target
audience is looking for within the documentary. We asked these
questions as it meant that we would be able to know what the audience
will be wanting to know out of the topics that we have chosen it will help
us to create the documentary as it will mean that we can make big
decisions on the composition of the documentary as we are making it so
that we conform to the needs of the targeted audience. For more
primary research we could do interviews into finding out what certain
people do when it comes to baking. We could also use these interviews
within the documentary as it will mean that we can show the viewers the
different opinions that our targeted audience will have. We can also use
these interviews to get the audience's opinion on our choices for the
documentary itself, as then if they disagree with some of our decisions
then we can make changes to the plan for the documentary to fit the
needs of the target audience that we have interviewed

12. Narrative structure
The start of the documentary will focus on the first thing people baked, how simple it was and why it was
important to them, it will also explore how baking has evolved, and compare traditional and patisserie
bakes. We will interview a food tech teacher. We will interview a baking blogger and ask her about why
baking is important to her and what was the first thing that she ever baked. We will include archive footage
from a church coffee morning with an interview with an old baker, then we will visit the christmas markets
in manchester and interview bakers from different countries.
In the middle of the documentary,we will include archive footage of the great british bake off and use
statistics and answers from members of the public to show why baking has become so popular. We will
visit bents garden centre pet place and explore why baking for pets has become mainstream and talk
about the differences between pet bakes and normal bakes. Next we will interview an old and young baker
separately, ask them why baking is important to them and then compare the answers. Then we will move
onto sweet and savory baking and ask members of the public which they prefer and why.
Towards the end of the documentary, we will ask members of the public which bakery shop is their
favorite, and then interview an employee in Waterfields and ask about prices and which is their most
popular item. We will also visit a supermarket and analyze the cost of their baked goods, we will also ask
members of the public what they would pay for a cake as well as asking interviewees. Then we will move
on to the topic of home baking by showing a tutorial of how to bake a cake, we will then use shots of this
cake to put a voice over on top of to show the statistics of home bakers. At the end we will have a clip of
people eating different bakes with a voice over summarising the documentary.
