TOPIC
The topic for our documentary is Breakfast and how it is a very important start to the day, we hope
to provide information to the audience which proves to them how it can help their concentration
and improve their diet. Within this documentary we will discuss the different types of breakfasts,
both healthy and unhealthy and why having healthy breakfasts is the preferred option of most
people, also some common habits regarding breakfast, where people eat it and when. We feel this is
important because a wide proportion of people surveyed don’t eat breakfast so we want to try and
encourage them to eat it as part of a balanced diet, as we think this will improve any day to day
activities.
TYPE OF DOCUMENTARY
Our documentary is a mixed documentary; this includes voiceovers, an exposition, interviews and
archive footage. We have chosen this type of documentary style because it’s one of the most
popular types of documentary which enables us to use the various techniques to explore breakfast
effectively in an unbiased way. We can use interviews to uncover different opinions of people who
may or may not eat breakfast, by doing this we hope to discover the majority view on breakfast in
the borough of Warrington. Voiceovers will be used to emphasize content on screen and help deliver
the exposition to the audience. Archive footage will help us reinforce the narrative along with the
voiceovers to interest the audience and also provide visual evidence. Some of the archive footage
will be used as cutaways during interviews which relate to the topic being discussed.
STYLE OF DOCUMENTARY
The style of documentary we hope to create is informal and very informative to our target audience,
by keeping it this way we hope to engage and interest the audience. We aim to keep the pacing of
the narrative quick so that the exposition comes across quicker which makes the audience more
informed and entertained. Another reason for this pacing is that it reflects the hectic breakfast
routines from people on a day to day basis.
CHANNEL AND SCHEDULING
From the questionnaire results we concluded that channel 4 and ITV were the most popular
terrestrial channels on TV, however we chose channel 4 as its renowned for its investigative
journalism. We feel that our documentary would benefit from being shown on this channel due to
this and will fit in with the regular scheduling. We want to place this documentary on a Wednesday
at 8pm so it doesn’t clash with other programming on other rival channels, Saturday nights are
commonly filled with primetime so in order to get the best audience we place in the middle of the
week. We have chosen to show our documentary at this time because it is right after the news,
which contains heavy and intense information. We strive to make the audience feel relaxed by
watching our documentary.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for our documentary is aged 16-45 year olds, this is because we thought this age
range would be most likely to skip breakfast, this also helps us with the results which we gathered
2. from the questionnaire as we asked people in that age category. We think that the style of
documentary should appeal to a wide audience due to its informal nature while still maintaining the
quality of information. We will feature different types of people with different background. These
types of people will be students, teachers, senior citizens, children and adults. It is significant to have
various types of people to interview and feature in our documentary as it promotes diversity and
make our documentary a varied and equal representation. By using a wide variety of people from
different backgrounds in our research we hope to get varied opinions and get a better
representation of different groups of people, by this we can gather more appropriate information
which will benefit them more.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
For our primary research, we have created and gathered questionnaire about our documentary. This
questionnaire includes questions that will help us to create our documentary such as “How often do
you eat breakfast” and what time which will help develop an understanding of individuals’ lifestyle.
Primary research is beneficial as it is conducted by ourselves; therefore we have chosen specifically
whom to ask and what questions to ask them. Primary research makes our documentary more
reliable, factual and informative to our audience.
SECONDARY RESEARCH
Secondary research is an important factor of making our documentary as it gives us different insights
about the topic and provides us with more information which we wouldn’t have been able to gather
ourselves. A few examples of secondary research which we may feature in our documentary include;
scientific statistics about breakfast to backup how important it is, nationwide figures regarding
breakfast which we can compare within our own community and medical issues such as stomach
ulcers which are caused by missing meals.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The start of the documentary will show the history of breakfast, montage’s of people eating
breakfast, people making breakfast. It is significant to give introduction about the documentary to
inform the audience what the documentary will consist of. It is also significant to ensure that the
start of the documentary doesn’t include heavy information and conflict as this may out of the
audience from watching; making the documentary relaxed at the beginning will make them want to
watch the documentary more. The Middle, will present the conflict between the benefits of
breakfast, portraying interviews of people where they will give their own opinion and insights about
breakfast. These opinions could include, if individual thinks breakfast is healthy or not. The middle of
our documentary would also include both healthy and non-healthy breakfast to create conflict and
to also draws the audiences in to which side they may prefer to; healthy breakfast or not. Producing
conflict in the middle of the documentary is significant as it is the most interesting part of the
documentary; it provides new and more information. The exposition of the documentary should be
apparent in the middle of the documentary because it can be concluded towards the end. The End
will resolve the argument, conveying advices and information on how to eat breakfast healthily in a
way that is appropriate to the lifestyles of our audience.
