Chapter 1- (page 26) Emotional Intelligence Journal - How you are feeling now
Right now my feelings towards college are good. I’m excited to experience all the things
there are to experience as a college student me feeling that way towards college outs
me in a positive path which is an excellent thing. It is an excellent thing because I will
not only show up and participate in my classes I will do well and get good scores one
my assignments. I will also do well on quizzes and test all because I am excited to
experience college rather than not even feeling like being there.
Some actions I think that will help me be prepared as possible to benefit from the
experience of college are things such as joining study groups and putting together study
groups because the teacher doesn’t always make things clear in the class room. I can
also ask students that have already taken the course what to expect so that I know
rather then it all being just one big surprise. Meeting with the teacher an going to
his/hers office is also another good idea. Going over my syllabus thoroughly and even
reviewing the text book scanning through the pages just so I know what to expect.
2. Chapter 2 - (page 58) Emotional Intelligence Journal – How you feel about your time
management
Most of my time demanding activities make me feel rather satisfied ever since I stared
college. I feel as if my day has more meaning and I’m actually getting things done in my
life that will cause for good thing in my future rather than just spending time with my
friends and hanging out. Now I spend most of my time attending my classes, studying
and, doing homework. It makes me feel great about myself and not so scared about my
future.
I don’t feel I need to make any better choices about how to spend my time. Choosing to
go to college was the best choice I have made. My days now consist of positive things
rather than negative. Although hanging out with friends is never a negative thing doing it
constantly all day everyday can be. Working could be another good way to spend my
day although in the long run you can’t live off a part time job making minimum wage.
That’s why school is the best choice and I’m very satisfied.
3. Chapter 3 – (page 87) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Your interactions with others
The type of people I tend to get along with are the type of people who are easy to work
with. That are smart but don’t think they know everything. I don’t tend to get along with
people who think they know everything and think they are always right. In reality you
aren’t always right and you don’t know everything. There always someone in the room
who is smarter or may know more things you don’t necessarily know. People always
have their own opinions or ideas so it’s good to take them all in rather than just thinking
you know everything.
I feel if I had to get along with a person that’s irks me or gets under my skin that I could
so it in a positive way. I have done it many times before. I’m not the type of person to
get mad easily an even when I do get mad I know whens the time and place to deal with
things and I would rather just not deal with it. I know how to keep my cool. I am far from
short tempered which I know is a very good trait to have.
4. Chapter 4 - (page 120) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Make a wiser choice
In my last year of high school I was taking an algebra class. I was given a teacher that I
had in the past and I didn’t work well with. She taught her lesson in a way that was hard
for me to understand. She was very fast pace and didn’t slow down for nobody. I didn’t
stay very positive and do things in a positive way. Instead of joining after school tutoring
which the school provided and studying I quickly lost hope. It caused me to fail the class
and not graduate with my class.
I was so angry and disappointed with myself. I knew I could have easily avoided all this.
All I needed to do was work a little harder and take advantage of the extra help my
school provided me with. I would have had such a better outcome and felt better about
the whole situation. I didn’t graduate with my class and walk across the stage like I
dreamed of my whole life which still bothers me to this day.
5. Chapter 5 - (page 156) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Reading challenges
Before choosing my classed and selecting a major I had to take a college placement
test. I didn’t score so high on the test which caused into me taking college prep classes.
I am taking a reading class which although I don’t have much of a struggle in the class it
has taught me a great deal of knowledge. Much of what is in the chapter. I learned
many new reading strategies that will benefit me for not only the class but when taking
any test in college. I learned many new skills when taking on reading.
I recently retook the college placement test. I scored much higher on the test and
almost a perfect score on the reading section. I believe I scored so well on the
placement test all because of the mandatory reading course I had to take. I don’t think I
would of scored so high if it wasn’t for the reading class.
6. Chapter 6 - (page 184) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Understanding your needs and
making changes
I have had many time when I struggled taking down effective notes because both the
teachers pace and the subject matter of the class. I was very aggravated and upset
because I know this would cause for a bad grade. Lucky a nice student let me copy
down some of their notes. I didn’t always get lucky and its sometimes led to me not
doing so well on a quiz or test. After reading this chapter there where many great note
taking approached which I’m sure I will use in the future.
The Cornell system is a great note taking approach. It is a very organized system which
makes it easier for studying. I also feel making charts and maps are great approach it is
another way which makes things easier when you go to study. Outlines are a way of
note taking I always have used and it always has saved me time. Taking good an
effective notes are very important because that’s what you use when studying.
7. Chapter 7- (page 218) Emotional Intelligence Journal – How feelings connect study
success
When faced with a challenge I try my best to take a couple deep breaths and get
through the stressful situation. I don’t walk away from it or deal with it later I deal with it
right then and there. I rather get things done with then have to deal with them in the
future anyway. So like I said I take a couple deep breathes and think of positive things
rather than negative to better help me get through the stressful situation.
I don’t ask for anyone’s help because I am a very independent person. I feel you can’t
always count on someone to help you get through your problems. By doing that it make
it even harder when you’re going through stressful situation and you have no choice but
to be independent about it. That’s another reason why I deal with the situation right then
and there cause you won’t always be able to take the 30min break or go for that quick
run.
8. Chapter 8- (page 252) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Test types
When it comes to test taking I feel most comfortable with multiple choice questions. I
feel most comfortable because I know if I don’t know the answers I can use common
sense to figure it out or eliminate answer I know aren’t the answer to narrow the choices
down. I also feel comfortable with true and false because in know it’s a 50/50 chance
that I got the answer correct. Feeling comfortable when taking a test affects my
performance in a very positive way which leads to a good score.
The types of test I don’t feel so comfortable taking are essay questions test. They have
always intimidated me so when going to take them I don’t feel so confident. After
reading this chapter it has made me feel better about essay type questions and I’m
excited to see how well I do with the next easy type test or quiz I am given.
9. Chapter 9 - (page 281) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Your experience with prejudice
I never been discriminated against or experienced any other type of prejudice and I
never been on the other end and acted out in that manner. I have witnessed it many
times. I witness it on a daily basses. I have witnessed it on the bus, at the mall and,
even at school. Some people are just so ignorant and don’t even relies when doing it.
Some can’t help it and were brought up that way and some just don’t care how they look
and make other people feel.
It makes me mad and upset when I witness these kinds of actions I feel everyone is
different in their own way and they should never be judged on that. I feel like people
should be judged never. Even when people bully people because of their size or
disability I feel just as mad or upset. Even a perfect person is the furthest thing from
perfect because nobody is perfect and never will be.
10. Chapter 10 - (page 312) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Addiction
Addiction is a horrible thing no matter if your addicted to drugs or even something small
such a food. Being addicted to something could cause for horrible results. I had a friend
that was highly addicted to drugs. It led him into jail rehab and even the hospital almost
causing him his life. I know quite a few people that have died from being addicted to
drugs and alcohol. A few too many which makes me feel no only bad but kind of
depressed. So many people die each day from natural causes and things as small as
an accident and to take your life because of and addiction is selfish to me.
Taking action when you’re addicted to something and joining programs such as rehab is
a great approach. Just because you’re addicted to something doesn’t mean you
continuously have to be. It gets me really upset when people don’t do anything about
their problem or when there family and friends don’t help ether.
11. Chapter 11 - (page 342) Emotional Intelligence Journal – You and credit
I feel that using credit card isn’t always a bad thing depending on the type of person you
are. If you’re good with your money and handle paying things on time well then having a
credit card isn’t so bad. I’m okay when it comes to money but I prefer to not use a credit
card or even have one I feel owing money is worse than having none at all. I always pay
bills on time and never avoid paying them. If I were to have a card it would be strictly for
emergencies only.
I wouldn’t make any change when it comes to spending money more wisely. The only
change I would make is more ways to save money even when every penny is needed.
I’m not bad when it comes to spending money on thing I don’t necessarily need but I do
need better ways to help save. Other than that I feel good with my money and don’t
have money spending problems.
12. Chapter 12 - (page 369) Emotional Intelligence Journal – Revisit your personal mission
I still have the same mission when it comes to college. I want to finish with a two year
degree and find a job that suits me in the medical field. Taking the course I now know of
some jobs that better suit me and I feel more confidante with my decision to pursue a
career in the medical field. I learned a lot of things about college success. I also learned
many ways to learn more information about different career choices.
My mission is to complete college with good grades and a degree in something. I don’t
want to give up and end up with a part time job making minimum wage. As long as I
finish what I start I know I will be more than happy with my results. Medical assistant is
a job I am very much interested in at the time and would love to pursue but with a little
more research on the jobs in the medical field that could change at any time.
