Introduction
My entries today are designed to introduce some key themes:

The importance of investing in research that really improves the health of patients in their communities
o Improving comparativeeffectiveness of research
Helping patient’s understand research, so as to aid the building of a clinical alliance between doctor and patient.
o Treating prostate cancer
Addressing patient’s concerns
o Quitting smoking and weight gain.
How can we make commissioning more sensitive to unmet health needs within local communities?
o Review of the journal “Network” April 2012
 My personal view, but based on analysis of SMMGP (substance misuse management in general practice).
There has been a shift in philosophy in the treatment of addiction away from maintenance programmes
towards recovery programmes

Thus I will start these 4 threads. There is a comments box, under each entry; your feedback is helpful and it establishes
dialogue. I will gradually add other articles (including book reviews!), if this is relevant to the discussion of any of my
themes. I hope it will be possible to meet periodically to discuss all of our threads (i.e. not just mine!).

It has been estimated that the half-life for a professional psychologist is 9 years. Thus, professional psychologists need to work assiduously to keep up to date with the changes in the field. This continuing education program strives to do that by having participants reflect on the most significant changes in the field in the last 10 years. To facilitate this reflection, the presenter offers his update in the psychotherapy and counseling literature in the last 10 years as an opportunity for participants to reflect on and consider their perceptions of the important developments in the field. This focuses on changes in psychotherapy and counseling and does not consider changes in other fields, except as they influence psychotherapy or counseling. There will be considerable participant interaction.

1 Instructions for completing Critique: Conceptual Nursing Framework The following is a template for you to use as you complete the assignment. Table 1 (Nursing Paradigms, Features, and Conceptual Frameworks) includes an overview of features of the three Nursing Paradigms: Particulate-Deterministic; Interactive-Integrative; and Unitary-Transformative (Fawcett, 2005). Select nursing theories and models, referred to as “Conceptual Frameworks,” are identified. Of the conceptual frameworks listed in Table 1, your group should select 2 to further explore. You may use your Alligood text and/or other available eBooks on nursing theorists. These texts have reference lists that are helpful as well, if you’d like to dig deeper in understanding a particular conceptual framework. Several nurse theorists even have their own websites! The 2 conceptual frameworks your group chooses are your choice. You could consider selecting at least one from each nursing paradigm. Or, perhaps you personally and professionally identify strongly with one of the nursing paradigms. Each is like a “lens,” offering a certain way of viewing nursing phenomena. Chances are you already view nursing (and the world, in general) according to one of the three nursing paradigms but just didn’t have a name for it…until now! Complete Table 2 (Selected Conceptual Frameworks: Basic Assumptions and Concepts Defined), providing a brief summary of basic assumptions and how concepts are defined for each of the 2 conceptual frameworks. From these 2 conceptual frameworks, select 1 conceptual framework from Table 2 and complete Table 3 (Selected Conceptual Framework: Conceptual Framework Evaluation Criteria Applied). The 5 criteria in Table 3 are to be used to evaluate and critique your selected conceptual framework. The criteria are also presented in Week 3: Presentations, “Theory Evaluation Criteria.” Explain your answers to the questions posed in the critique, providing rationales and examples (i.e., provide more than “yes” or “no” in your responses). Provide a reference list of the resources you used to complete this assignment. At the end, please provide a brief summary of each group member’s contributions to this assignment. This is the study guide for Module 4 of The School for Health and Care Radicals, a five week virtual programme, designed to equip people across the health and care system with the core skills to improve their skills as change agents. It supports NHS Change Day 2014, the grassroots movement in which everyone who values the NHS can make a pledge of action to improve things for patients and the health and care system. Big change only happens in health and care because of heretics and radicals: passionate people who are willing to take responsibility and work with others to make change happen. Being a radical isn't related to hierarchy or position and you don't have to work in the NHS or social care to qualify as one. Registrants to the school so far include patients and carers, students, senior leaders, improvement facilitators and clinical and care staff. There is also a live weekly web seminar which will be available to 'listen again', supported by a raft of other opportunities, including coaching and mentoring, virtual discussions and tweet chats, and an ever- expanding portal of useful resources. An important prelude to what follows is that each perspective contains unique contributions to help people identify and overcome psychological and emotional issues causing distress.
