Fellowship in the body
Fellowship with the body is vital. This topic is so important in light of recent
events in our world. We have faced disasters by natural means and disasters
at the hands of our fellow man. Where do we turn when a fellow human be-
ing can ravage the unassuming worshipper or concert-goer? Can we trust
any fellow?
This author has chosen to use the word “fellow” for a reason. We, as Chris-
tians, represent the body of Christ and we are joined together in Christian
fellowship. We do not turn to the world and its politics for the answers. We
turn to God. When we all do this, the result is that we can lean on each other.
In doing this, we must remember that we are unified by something more
permanent and powerful than our street addresses and the building in which
we meet. We are unified by the blood of Jesus Christ, which connects us
across streets, zip codes and oceans. Together we are a kinship in the Lord.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with
one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 Jn
1:7). We will spend the next 4 weeks discussing the concept of fellowship.
The early church was devoted to it. We will seek to answer the question:
Where does fellowship come from? Our passage of consideration for these
weeks will be 1 John 1:1-9. This passage will show four points of discus-
sion:
1. Fellowship comes from the word.
2. Fellowship comes from the Father
3. Fellowship comes from practice.
4. Fellowship comes from obedience
Please consider this subject for the next 4 weeks. Pray for the fellowship
here at Deerfoot and our works overseas. Pray that you will strive to be
more devoted to the fellowship. Strive to implement one thing each week for
fellowship. Check out what is being done and strive to be involved with one
thing you haven’t been. When these weeks are completed, I want you to
consider the answers to those prayers and consider the blessings we have in
Christ.

Jesus the Good Shepherd – Part 4
The Good Shepherd is willing to die for the
sheep. In the twenty-third Psalm David spoke of
walking “through the valley of the shadow of
death” (23:4). There were times when the shep-
herd would have to lead the sheep through some
narrow passages where danger would be found.
Therefore he would go first to make sure everything
was safe and well. To do that the shepherd was
armed with a rod and a staff. The rod was a stout
piece of wood about three feet long. At the end of it
would be a lump of wood about the size of an or-
ange. It was used to drive off wild beasts or thieves.
The Staff was a long stick with a crook at the end.
When a sheep began to stray it could be used to
pull the sheep back. David also used a sling to de-
fend his flock from lions and bears (1 Sam. 17:34,
35).
William Barclay pointed out that a shepherd
was born to his task. “He was sent out with the flock
as soon as he was old enough to go; he grew into
the calling of being a shepherd; the sheep became
his friends and his companions; and it became sec-
ond nature to him to think of them before he thought
of himself. But the false shepherd came into the job,
not as a calling, but as a means of making money.
He was in it simply and solely for the pay he could
get out of it…He was only a hireling.”
As the Good Shepherd Jesus is motivated by
love, not selfish gain. In John 15:13 Jesus said,
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay
down one's life for his friends.” And Jesus will-
ingly laid down His life for the sheep. This was a
voluntary action. When I preached a lesson on
“Who Killed Jesus?” we spoke of those who were
responsible in part for Jesus’ death. This included
the Jewish leaders who demanded it and the Ro-
mans who had the authority to carry out capital pun-
ishment and whose governor and soldiers carried
out the crucifixion. But ultimately Jesus said no one
took His life but He freely chose to laid it down
(John 10:17, 18 - “Therefore My Father loves Me,
because I lay down My life that I may take it
again. 18 "No one takes it from Me, but I lay it
down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and
I have power to take it again. This command I
have received from My Father."). In instituting the
Lord’s Supper Jesus told His disciples, “Take, eat;
this is My body." 27 Then He took the cup, and
gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink
from it, all of you. 28 "For this is My blood of the
new covenant, which is shed for many for the
remission of sins.”
