This was the title of our recent Plant & Water episode to introduce our congregation’s theme: Reach Out. If you have not been able to see that yet I encourage you to visit our Facebook page. If you enjoy listening to them, we have also started a Podcast of the Plant & Water episodes. What are you reaching for in 2020? Maybe the words of Paul can give direction to where we can reach this year. “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12 -14). The words of Solomon may help us as we consider the purpose from which we reach out. “The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. 12 My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. 13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:11-13). As we reach out toward God, there are just some things we have to release from our clutches in order to do so. The words of Peter can help us with this. “So, put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiri- tual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Peter 2:1-2). What further encourages us to reach out toward God is that God has reached out to us. The words of Peter affirm this truth. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9-10). What are you reaching for in 2020? Will you help us in our efforts to reach the lost in 2020? I know this year will be a blessing as a result. A Note From the Harp

The use of the present tense by the apostle lets us know that we are to “keep on work- ing out our salvation.” The work of Christ is finished. We know that throughout His ministry Jesus spoke of his task of finishing the work God had given to Him. In John 4:34 he told His disciples, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” Then later He told them, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work” (Jn. 9:4). Then at His death Jesus said, “It is finished.” His death was the completed sacrifice necessary to our being saved from our sins. But our work must continue. Jesus did eve- rything He needed to do to provide for our salvation, but we must continue our work. The Greek word translated as “work out” is katergazethai which, ac- cording to W.E. Vine means “to work out, achieve, effect by toil.” Thayer says of this word that it means “to do that from which something results.” William Barclay says that it “always has the idea of bringing to completion, to a full and complete and perfect accomplishment and conclusion.” Then he adds, “It is as if Paul said: ‘Don’t stop halfway.” Brother Marshall Keeble used to preach a sermon called “Gospel Baseball” in which he would tell his audience, “I’m the pitcher and you’re the bat- ter. I’m not like some pitcher who will throw you nothing but curve balls. I’m going to deliver it right over the plate. Now first base is faith. You must be- lieve in Jesus. Second base is repentance and you can’t be saved without repenting of your sins. Third base is confession. One must confess Jesus as the Son of God, for “confession is made unto salva- tion” (Rom. 10:10). Home plate is baptism and one must be baptized “for the remission of your sins” (Acts 2:38). Then he would conclude with the plea, “Now whatever you do, don’t die on third.” His sermon was teaching the same lesson – Don’t stop halfway, bring your salvation to a full and complete end. After we are saved from our past sins and have become Christians, we must continue to work out our own salvation. -to be continued Area Wide Singing FEBRUARY 7 7 pm—9 pm Deerfoot Church of Christ Please bring finger foods: brownies, cookies, sandwiches, hotdogs, chip & dips, little smokies, chili, or soup, drinks.
