James ___:___-___; ___-___ Ephesians ___:___-___ Hebrews ___:___-___ Love is Excellent In our Q&A last month, we briefly discussed the gifts of the Holy Spirit ceasing to allow for the much more excellent way: Love. On Tuesday, the world celebrates in its own way this excellent concept. In the Church’s infancy, it depended on spiritual gifts for its growth and nourishment. These gifts were varied, yet vital for growth, and caused all to stand in awe of the Father. While writing to the Corinthians, Paul saw that they were missing excellence. Somehow, they lost the reason for being together. “But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you (1 Corinthians 11:17-18). In the following chapter, Paul points out what the Corinthians MUST pursue. “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way (1 Corinthians 12:27-31). What is this excellent way? If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is…” (1 Corinthians 13:1-13:4a). Why is love defined as the “most” excellent way? Notice that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were varied, and people desired certain gifts assigned by God that limited some. (This could have led to the factions among the Corinthians.) Not everyone received the gift of speaking in different languages. Not everyone received the gift of prophecy. Paul tells the Corinthians to desire a gift that was more excellent. Everyone could share in this gift. This word literally means “extraordinary quality.” A gift that far outweighed all other gifts. A gift desired by all, and achievable by all! Love is something we can all do. Not one person is excluded from the love feast. There is no one person who can love better than anyone else. It levels the playing field! Love is Excellent!
