Cause for Certainty
Today marks the first Sunday in October. On
the last Sunday of this month, we will have our Q &
A night. This article is to remind you to get in your
question for that day, and also to ask another question:
Are you certain?
Paul emphasized to the Corinthian congregation
the topic of utmost certainty. Paul was a very educated
man and had access to great wisdom and insight. He
said this to a crowd of Jews, “I am a Jew, born in
Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated
at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of
the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of
you are this day” (Acts 22:3). Paul was a tentmaker by
trade, and we know that he was successful in his work
efforts. His missionary journeys would have been costly
endeavors, yet he travelled thousands of miles over land
and sea.
Why? For what reason did Paul put himself in
harm’s way? Why did he endure eight beatings almost
to death, one stoning with large rocks, and three
shipwrecks? “On frequent journeys, in danger from
rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own
people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city,
danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from
false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a
sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food,
in cold and exposure” (2 Cor. 11:24-27).
Paul took his right and authority as an apostle of
the Lord and submitted himself to Christ. Paul decided
to represent to the Corinthian congregation the topic of
utmost certainty. “And I, when I came to you, brothers,
did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God
with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know
nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him
crucified” (1 Cor. 1:1,2).
In our lives, we all have our own
understandings and perspectives. As a nation, there are
things that seem to divide us at every turn. While we
have different perspectives and views as a country, we
must share the same certainty at the foot of the cross.
“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in
heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of
God the Father” (Philippians 2:10 -11).
May we be ever more certain of the unity we
find in Christ and His Word. May we also choose to
know nothing among ourselves except Christ and Him
crucified. The only cause for certainty.
