7. • INTRODUCTION
In the journey of Christian life, the Heavenly Father
establishes the standard of conduct for eternal life. He
signals how we should act along this path to Heaven.
Therefore, as evidence of his love and care, preparing
everything for us to walk the path of truth well, the Father
corrects us on our Christian journey. Therefore, in this
lesson, we will study how we should guide ourselves along
the path that takes us to Heaven.

I – THE STANDARD OF
CONDUCT ON THE
CHRISTIAN WALK
10. • I – THE STANDARD OF CONDUCT ON THE
CHRISTIAN WALK
1. Jesus as our standard of conduct. Before analyzing the biblical text
of Ephesians 5, it is up to us to reflect on a general pattern of conduct
to do the Father's will in this Christian journey. Is there a standard that
the Lord Jesus expects from his disciples to do God's will in this life?
The word “standard” expresses a norm determined by consensus, or by
an official authority, which becomes a basis for comparison established
as a model to be followed. The Lord Jesus taught the following: “For I
have given you an example, that, as I have done to you, you should do
the same” (John 13:15). Now, this text expresses that He is our model of
conduct, our standard of life. Yes, there is a standard of conduct that is
based on our Lord and whoever wants to do God's will in this world
must look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hb 12.2).
10
11. 2. Doing God's will. As the Son of God, Jesus sought to please the
Father on the journey of this life, always doing his will (John 4.34; 6.38;
17.4). It is no coincidence that our Lord encouraged us to seek the
Father's will in the prayer that He taught the disciples, the “Our Father”
(Mt 6.10; cf. Mt 26.39,42). To human eyes, it seems very difficult to walk
in Christ's divine pattern. However, this is possible when we seek help
from above, according to the prayer taught by Him (Mt 6.9-13).
Therefore, the Christian who wants to go to heaven seeks to do God's
will, leaving aside the path of selfishness, pride and vanity; seeking to get
closer to and practice the “Golden Law” taught by our Lord: “whatever
you want men to do for you, do so for them” (Mt 7.12; cf. Rm 13.8,10).
11
12. 3. A successful Christian life. Regarding the Christian life, the apostle
Paul said that we are in a “spiritual competition” and, therefore, we must
look for the right path to find ourselves qualified (1 Cor 9.24-27). In this
way, the Christian has a standard that will lead him to a successful
spiritual life. We know that successful people seek to model themselves
on other illustrious, balanced and resilient people (cf. 1 Cor 11:1). Now,
in Christ Jesus we have this pattern and model. He was resilient,
balanced and illustrious until his death, so that the apostle Paul wrote
about our Lord, urging us to imitate him: “Let this mind be in you as was
also in Christ Jesus” (Phil 2:5; cf. . Mt 11.29).

our standard of life.

• II – TAKING THE WALK WITH
PRUDENCE AND WISDOM
1. What is prudence? We can divide chapter 5 of Ephesians into
three parts:
1) the Christian’s walk in love (Eph 5.1-14);
2) a wise walk (Eph 5.15-17);
3) a trajectory filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph 5.18-33). Here, we will
focus on the second part.
In Ephesians 5, the apostle Paul teaches about the Christian's journey in
this world. In this chapter, the word “prudence” stands out. According
to the Old Testament, the word “prudence” has a connotation of
understanding and discernment (Pv 9.9).
16. 16
In Proverbs 9:10, when it is said that the righteous “will
grow in prudence”, the term brings the idea of teaching,
instruction and ability to teach. In the New Testament, the
word refers to something that God has bestowed upon us,
that is, “all prudence”, understanding, knowledge and love
of God’s will (Eph 1.8). So, we can conceptualize
prudence as a virtue that allows us to act with care and
moderation when faced with challenging situations; it is a
practical reason that allows us to discern between the most
appropriate choices to do good (Pv 16.16; cf. James 5.17).
17. 17
2. Do not walk like fools! The Apostle Paul says that we should
not walk like fools (Eph 5:15), whose adjective asophos brings
the idea of someone foolish, foolish, ignorant and dull (Luke
24:25); but as “wise”, that is, diligent, careful and wise, filled with
the Holy Spirit to do the will of the Lord. Being foolish reflects
a life of spiritual ignorance, absence of wisdom and devoid of
divine light; it means being immersed in a journey of sin (Eph
2.2,3). Therefore, the apostle Paul's appeal to the believer is: “be
careful how you walk”. In other words: be cautious. The apostle
makes it clear that those who live in carnality will never please
God (Rm 8.8).
18. 18
3. Walk like wise men! The adjective that Paul uses to describe
those who walk to heaven is “wise”, from the Greek sophós, a
skillful, expert person. This adjective essentially describes the
Christian's life directed by the Holy Spirit. Now, those who walk
in the Spirit walk in light, in holiness and have wisdom (Eph 1:8;
Col 4:5). Through the divine light, which inhabits the believer,
his walk is with discernment, wisdom really makes him
distinguish between what he should or should not do. There is a
commitment to never return to the old ways of the world.
However, it is important to understand that this wisdom is not
human, it does not arise from academic courses; it is spiritual, it
comes from above. Through this wisdom, we walk in holiness
(Heb 12:14) and become like Jesus (1 John 3:2; Gal 3:26).
19. Wisdom in the believer makes him discern
between what he should and should not do.

• III – OVERCOMING BAD DAYS
1. Redeeming time. Verse 16 of Ephesians 5 presents the verb remir as
a translation of the Greek exagorázō. It has two meanings:
1) to redeem, rescue from the power of another by paying a price;
2) buy for your own use. So, we can say that redeem is an expression
used to refer to the wisdom of buyers who waited for the right time to
buy according to the best price offered by the market. With the
expression “redeeming the time”, the apostle Paul refers to the Christian
who conducts himself in a profitable and wise way in the context of this
world (Eph 5.16; cf. Col 4.5).
22. 22
2. Redeeming time and the Return of the Lord. When
talking about redeeming time among early Christians, they had in
mind the imminence of the second coming of the Lord Jesus,
that is, this expected event could happen at any time (1 Cor
15.51). Therefore, Christians were encouraged to seek wisely to
take advantage of every opportunity, especially to prepare
themselves spiritually for that day. Thus, the prospect of our
Lord's imminent return means that we do not waste time on
banal things; rather, it exhorts us to live wisely, holy and godly,
for the Lord Jesus can return at any time (1 Thess. 4:15).
23. 23
3. The days are bad. Another expression that draws attention is
“the days are evil” (Eph 5:16). It reveals that we are part of a
society dominated by sin, which can take up our time and lead us
to commit evil. We cannot conform to this possibility, we cannot
be foolish to such an extent, but understand “what God’s will is”
(Eph 5:17). Thus, God's will has to do with, as Christians, taking
advantage of the time to strengthen our spiritual life, do good to
others, read the Bible, pray, consecrate ourselves and gather
together (Gal 6.10; Heb 10.25).
24. The believer must strengthen his
spiritual life to deal with the
adversities of bad days.

• CONCLUSION
On our journey to the heavenly mansions we need to follow the
divine pattern, that is, the standards determined by the Father,
which are inserted in his Word (2 Tim 3.16). It is necessary to
live wisely and prudently, making the most of opportunities to
do good, and not allowing ourselves to be dominated by bad
days, in the certainty that the Coming of the Lord is
approaching and, this, encourages us in a holy way (Hb 12.14).
